Journalists Morison and Sidasathian exposed the plight of Rohingya refugees, and the Thai military's involvement in people smuggling, which saw them on trial for defaming the Thai Navy. Here we report on their ordeal.
"There are very few jails in the world that are as bad as Thai jails. It would mean death for me at my age", says 67-year-old Alan Morison. The veteran reporter moved to Thailand to set up his own tourist news site in 2008, but retirement plans were put on hold after he was put on trial with his Thai colleague Chutima Sidasathian for exposing the plight of Rohingya refugees fleeing persecution in Myanmar. Ironically it was the Thai Navy that first tipped them off to the crisis by supplying images of Rohingya arrivals. "The photos were astonishing. They showed rows of near-naked men spread out on beaches with people standing over them with guns", says Morison. But after he and Sidasathian's reporting helped end Thailand's inhumane pushback policy, Burmese persecution got worse, and human trafficking became big business. Alan and Chutima later included a 41-word-paragraph investigation into Thai military forces profiting from people smuggling on their site, and it's that paragraph that has seen them on trial on charges of computer crimes and defaming the Royal Thai Navy. "The future of the Rohingya depends on freedom of speech", says Morisson. "and I guess that's why journalism exists"

Peter Jones ..I am a Britisher living in The Philippines...I feel safe here, I mind my own business and I enjoy freedom of speech ( a precious commodity nowadays ) ..What foreigners, whether tourists and residents are strictly forbidden to do is to get involved in politics. Taking part in protests or demos are strictly verboten !!!!! Violate the law...and you are deported. Political matters are strictly the domain of indigenous Filipinos.

There is no such ppl called "Rohingya" they are Indian Bengali Muslims brought to Burma during British rule to undermine the Buddhist Burmese ppl during the colonial times for economic purposes! After Independence in 1948 Burmese govt kicked out 1 million back to India, but some still remained.

This recent expulsion of Muslim Bengalis should say "Made in England", I remember Idi Amin kicking out the Muslim Indians of his country the world cussed him out for it but ppl forget that these "Indians" had British Passports! given to them by the UK govt via their leader the Aga Khan who used his influence in the UK to get them the Passports, Amin lured them into a trap he offered them local citizenship which of course they REFUSED, so he deported them to their "homeland".

If he had apologized when asked to, that would have been taken as an admittance of guilt, and the charges would then have stuck like glue. That was a dirty underhanded attempt, trying to get someone to admit guilt for something which they are not responsible, the corrupted judicial system convict many innocent people this way the world over, Pilate tried that with Jesus but failed, so sent him back to Herod.

All's well that ends well, and this case did, with Alan and Chutima found not guilty of all charges, in carefully considered judgment. It was a good day for all concerned in this case…... But there's plenty that's not well, plenty of truth not being heard, plenty not getting out because of threats and more. In the end this is just one small step forward….. more power to all concerned, but still there are many more steps that desperately need to be made.

The guy repeted a story about naval forces hand in hand with smuggler,s but was it only true because Reuters said so? Then he is asked to apologies but he doesn't want to, and finally acquited. So what was the point of that video exactly? Showing a bad image of Thailand,... again? The West want to force Thailand to accept these refugees, most of whom don't even want to stay there. Thailand has millions of refugees from Myanmar already. Leave Thailand alone and go to check how you take care of your own refugees in Australia!

1 Peter 3 vs. 12 -16 or so talks about defamation being something that is a fact of life. Think about it and you know it has happened to you and you probably have done it to others, like that drunk will never change etc...Yet it says to give a defense in meekness not retaliate with revenge or prison as this is giving place to evil and is un graceful. Yes, it is something that injures another person but, one should realize it human nature to error this way and not one is above it and deserves the same penalty for it. That would probably be death on Judgement day when we face what we will upon exiting this world. That is unless we seek and accept Jesus by obedience best we can. The Sir Henry Layard excavations prove with what is irrefutable physical evidence of who GOD is, thus, that he was an authority who shows us how to behave and that the Christian bible in itself true enough to not doubt for the most part. Yet you are in a Nation that makes prodigal sons of all, because they are not learned in these things what so ever.
