These songs and tones made me a HUGE fan of Dann. I live near Nashville and have had the honor of meeting Dann a few different times. Phenomenal human in addition to being one of the best of all times, and my guitar hero. Great job on this video, brother!
I’ve followed Dann since his White Heart days. He is still under the radar of many. I always felt he was one of the top lead guitarists because of his technical prowess, his sound and his melodic leads that soar over any composition: leads that blended the lead melodically and thematically to any song he approached. Lacking is videos such as yours, highlighting not only Dann, but his sound. Dude, you killed it! Thank you!
That is such a wonderful guitar tone you recreated there. Awesome job man! Almost undistinguishly close to the timeless original! Thanks Richard and have a merry Christmas
You great chops and great tone. Peavey amps are underestimated. A guy gave me an old Pevey Classic 50 410 combo that had a broken cab. It still sounded great and it is a loud amp. I was blown away by it.
Great breakdown and playing! When I was playing in 9Os Country bands, covering a lot of Dan's tunes, I had both the Classic 30 and the 50 combos, after reading that he was using the 50. I was never completely happy with my tones but now I think it was probably the speakers. I learned recently he was using the head into cabs. 20yrs ago, I traded my 30 and 50 for a JCM 2000 into different cabs. I still love that OD sound over the Peavey but the clean wasn't as good. I ended up converting my 72 Fender Twin into a head and running A/B with the Marshall.
Yeah man- when I tried my Classic 50 through the ex-owners cab, I was disappointed. Made a massive difference putting it through something with V30s or Creambacks!
This may be my favourite from you till date! You playing almost all the songs from my favourite GIANT album, awesome lead and clean tones, the storytelling of an awesome amp and a little bit of signal chain info. It has all the ingredients! Thanks so much Richard! I will definately consider being a Patreon if it means you will make more of these!!!
Thx to your channel i ran into the Dan huff stuff. Thank you so much. Blown away I missed out all of that all this time. Your playing is absolutely beyond amazing. So accurate and full emotions. Damn, very jealous ;-). Super great work man! Have great Hollidays. Greetings from Belgium!
Ah man! Thanks so much- I truly appreciate it. Very pleased to have played a small part in introducing you to Dann's amazing playing! And to you, my friend- happy holidays!
The secret to the Classic is its raw, nasty grit that is in stark contrast to the smooth, refined overdrive of the other gear he used. Its waveform got into places in the mix most amps fear to tread.
Took me a while but i have a Classic 50 2 x 12 on irs way ro my home. This video sealed the deal for me, thank you, Richard!! Thinking about another one and running them stereo or dual mono. I never thought i would play an EL84 amp, nor did i think id buy a Peavey. But man, these amps sound so good!! Hope you are doing great!
really good guitarist,,,,, Dan Huff is one of my favorite players,,, Rex Carroll from White Cross is One of My Fave too,,,, Im blessed to be friends with him,, very nice Guy, Love his music,, So many good guitarist, Your very talented toooooo, Great sound
I haven't had the opportunity to compare unfortunately, man. I would think it's going to be, at very least, in the ballpark but perhaps with less headroom.
Congrats on your amp! I never owned a 50, but the 30s were common back lines here and I did own a couple Delta Blues over the years. They were great. I watched a video with Dan last year where he mentioned still using his XTC. .....that was all the justification I needed to pull the trigger on one. :) cheers
@@RichardWatson it's lovely and I've used it everyday since I bought it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9FNx_xKSees.htmlsi=TwdOzBjuU_sMH9CW cheers!
Thank you for sharing this with us. I have always loved Mr. Huff's tone and compositions! I would like to see a side by side comparison video with your classic 50 and one of the classic 20 mini heads.
Yeah man, I'd be curious to hear that too. Someone in the comments mentioned how much they dig their Classic 20 head so I think they must be pretty close!
Peavey classic series is great. Especially thru a good cabinet. Peavey made great gear for a while. VTM, classic, 5150, Ultra Plus. Their generation series of guitars are nice. I owned a Peavey Vandenberg in the early 90s. Amazing shred guitar. Great sound and neck.
Oh man, what an amazing video Richard! So glad you finally did I’ll See You In My Dreams! Amazing job! I always figured Dan used some sort of modded Marshall for these tones, but this is interesting. A friend had a Classic 50 combo and I thought the drive was not good sounding. Maybe the cab wasn’t well suited to it. I figured it was more of a Fender clone than Marshall. I wonder if there’s any similarity to the Classic 30 or if that’s totally different. Time to take a closer look.
Thank so much, man! I suspect that for a lot of Dann's Giant era stuff, he'd be using his Boogie, Soldano-modded Marshall or Kasha stuff, reserving the Classic 50 for "Zeppelin tone" type overdubs. With that said, it's fun to see how close you can get to the sound of those records and, although the quality control is probably not that of boutique builders, it's still a great little amp with a ton of usable tones!
Great video. I have a little Classic 20 I bought several years ago that needs some work - the cheap tube sockets are problematic and I have an ARC happening from one EL84 - so I have to get around to soldering in new ones. But this little guy has 1 or 2 really unique tones and put a RAT and DDL in fron of it and its a lot of fun.
man, still do not understand why your channel has not exploded jet… i am a YT creator myself and sitting on my 3.5k but honestly admitting, your clips are some of the best i‘ve seen. i love dan huff, lukather and specially landau… he‘s a genious! and your work all about these legends is genious too! hope and wish you the success you desreve 💥🍀 have a wonderful christmas and who knows, maybe one day we can colaborate 🙏 cheers tom
Ah, that's so kind of you, Tom- thanks man! It's a slow burn for sure but I'm lucky, like yourself, to enjoy the process! Have a great Christmas, man- you're a great player!
Hey Richard, hope you're well. Always great to see Huff content from you Steve Farris also has a Classic 50. Heard him say on a podcast it's the amp he plays through most at home. If you watch Tom Bukovac's 100th Home Skoolin' episode Dan Huff is the guest and they discuss the strat in decent depth towards the end, and Dan even says his main recording guitar these days is a Rickenbacker of all things Those Classic amps were great. My first decent amp was a Classic 30 combo Quite tempted to get a Classic 20 for noodling around the house when I don't fancy setting up my Fractal outside of my music room. Hope you have a great Christmas !
These are cool amps. Stuart Smith who plays with the Eagles uses this live with the Eagles today I'm pretty sure. I remember my guitar teacher had a classic 50 and a PRS in the early 2000s that he used with a Marshall Guv'nor drive
The tone that Dan had is not an easy tone to dial in. Especially since he was just as famous for the clean with chorus tone as much as the high gain tone. In many of his CCM sessions he had this very subtle overdrive but with high gain tone. In other words a lot of his tone was very controlled distortion.
Awesome video! I’ve gotten extremely similar tones with my Peavey JSX. I believe it has a similar gain structure as the classic 50. I have a few amps that are much more expensive but I always enjoy plugging into the JSX from time to time.
A bit of correction on the closer recent video of Dan. He mostly uses matchless amps these days. Per Rob mcknelly and a few other folks I’ve spoken to.
Hey man, for clarity- I'm not suggesting the Classic 50 is Dann's go-to amp (I know he uses a lot of Matchless, Bogner and Friedman) but it's cool to see it still in his collection!
Though the tone is good, the architecture of the amp is abysmal. From 20W, 30W, 50W, and 100W, they prone to fail at some point due to sandwiched design and sometimes bad load resistors on power tubes.
@@RichardWatson 2024 goal is to re-create that amp in better format/board. I think I finished the schematic but haven’t done the layout yet. I definitely will share with you when it happens. ❤️
