Getting changed in a changing robe is not as easy as it might at first seem. There's certainly a technique to using a dryrobe or smocsmoc or charlie mcleod or swimzi to best effect. These are my 10 tips for a warm and speedy change.

Just started swimming at the beach this year and bought a Hiturbo changing robe - has a hood and lots of room. Getting swimming costume off and bottoms on was easy then realised how do I put bra and top on. I walked home with my changing robe on - not a problem. Found your RU-vid videos and your brilliant advice regarding how to put a vest on. Just did a trial run with some stretchy singlets I had under the changing robe at home. Brilliant!!!! Meeting the local Bluetits for a swim tomorrow so will be sharing your advice. Thank you so much.

Great video, I do almost exactly the same. By trial and error I ditched the knickers and I'd figured a vest from the bottom up was the easy option. (Though I do mine before the trousers then there's less on my hips to get it over, personal preference I guess.) I'm working my way through your videos and enjoying them. Many thanks, Sarah (from a short distance along the coast to the East!)

I sort out my extremities first, swim hat off and woolly hat on straight away then dry feet and put fluffy 4 tog socks on, also easier to get your feet through your trouser legs. I find my shivers are prolonged if my clothes are damp from inadequate drying and I wear layers that I can take off and put back on in one e.g. thermal base layer and jogging bottoms together, thermal base layer, long sleeve T together, then zip through sherpa hoodie and coat.

@kirstyfern
@kirstyfern 3 года назад
I'm absolutely with you on the socks first! I actually put wellie socks on today, as my Dryrobe needs to be a bit longer so they kept my legs warm, lol! Then thermal longs and vest (which are also a bit wicking so if I'm not properly dry they do the job), then tracksuit bottoms and jumper, then bobble hat. Once at the car I put dry 4 tog socks and trainers / boots on so my feet are fully dry.

Hi Rachel, another great video and good practical tips! Fast dressing - things you can slip on which are not tight - trackie bottoms - sweatshirt or fleece top, thick walking socks and as I'm walking to and from countryside swim spots my walking boot laces are already tied but very loose so I can just slip my feet straight in. I'm inclined to get moving, having changed and just as the after drop begins to hit - muscle use generates heat. Others in my swim group are more inclined to have a chat with two hands clamped around a mug of hot coffee - I'm not sure there is a right answer to dealing with after drop...
@EverydayAthleteRach
@EverydayAthleteRach 4 года назад
Thanks for watching. I tend to use a Chilly's bottle with my hot drink in it and sip it on the way to the car, combining both of the methods you mention. I sit in the car with the heaters on and, I don't drive until I've finished the warm drink to make sure I'm in good shape. 🏊😀

I do the dry swimming costume instead of vest and undies thing. Can put it on with your arms tucked into the dryrobe. Then when you're getting your top on you don't have to worry about flashing people and you can do it quickly. That said I got mine twisted today, had 3 attempts, got cold, gave it up as a bad job and had to walk to the car with my robe fully done up disguising the fact I had my jumper round my neck without my arms through and couldn't work the rest out. My new happy thing is a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel on my feet while I'm doing any upper half faffing.

An arse flash is part of outdoor swimming. I do find changing under a robe easier though for keeping the wind off, I've tried holding the corners of the towel in my mouth, and seem able to do so right up to the point I'm starkers underneath then the towelling makes me gag and I end up with a full flash! 🏊😃

My tip is get woolly hat on asap, even over the swim cap until you finish dressing. It really helps. Thermal everything, socks go on first, I personally cant stand wet soggy neoprene boots! Warm fleece lined joggers next, fake ugg boots! Then thermal vest, or 2 maybe! then tbh a big woolly arran jumper is the my lifesaver! Ive tried hoodies galore, and always gone back to the arrans! Massive woolly scarf to stop draft down the neck. Eventually swim cap off, hat back on. I layer up a lot. Some say overkill, I'm just used to it from my day job on tv/movie sets! But thermal everything! Tho that trick of stepping into the tops is ideal! I keep wrestling the arms in! Thank you! Enjoy the swimming! ❤❤❤

Thank you, you are so sweet to share your experience with these helpful tips. I am 76 years old lady and I love to swim in winter time, in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Liguria, Italy) with my lifeguard dog. I use the same method but after I get dressed, I no longer wear the wet bathrobe... I put on the down jacket with the hood and put on a windproof jacket, then I put on a wool hat and the down hood and the windproof hood. My weak point are my feet that I dry with difficulty and then put on socks and shoes. I will follow your advice, because they are fine in the water but then during the day, even when the house is heated, my feet are cold for many hours. Maybe can I put a heating cream to reactivate circulation and do foot exercises? Sorry for the language mistakes. 😊

I get weird sticky hands after being in salt water so now put 2 small bin liners over my hands which lets me dive into a wool sweater. I take a bottle of warm water to rinse my feet. Another thing I do (not related to dressing) is I leave a hi viz bag with my red bike light flashing so I can see at a glance where my datum point is.

I use a onesie as it is all in one. Although as the temp is dropping I may need to go back to trousers as the wind is cutting through them. I would argue that the swim hat needs to come off first and swap for a bobble hat straight away. Swim hat comes off with the goggles as I am walking back to my stuff - once a triathlete always a triathlete.
@EverydayAthleteRach
@EverydayAthleteRach 3 года назад
The triathlete habits must be strong. Even if you wanted to leave the swim hat, on because it's easier to pull things on over your head than with a bobble hat, I don't think you could 😆. Maybe a thicker onesie, like the one made by Lomo Watersports as a drysuit undersuit could be the wat forward? 🏊😄

Some good tips here, thanks. After years of umming and aahing I finally bought a Red Pro Change Robe but primarly to put on after mountain biking in winter instead of my towelling "skirt" to keep mud off the car seats. Today was the first day that I used it at Harlyn Bay after my first bellyboarding session in 55years (moved on to bodyboarding) and of course you don't wear a wetsuit for bellyboarding do you? Lesson learned: take a towel to dry off before putting on the robe as the fur doesn't stick to you arms and it should keep you warmer as the fur remains dry. Being a male it is a lot easier to get changed in the robe but wouldn't it be easier for you not to put your arms in the sleeves in the first place instead of in and out every few manoeuvers? You have then put your arms in the sleeves when you've finished.
@EverydayAthleteRach
@EverydayAthleteRach 2 года назад
With the arms in and out game, most changing robes have a little morse under arm space than the Red, so it's a bit easier and some dry you sufficiently to get clothes on without the need for a towel - you might find that after a few uses the Red becomes less 'sticky' inside 🏊😀

I noticed you put your pants on first. Wouldn’t it make more sense to get your core covered right away? Also, does it make sense to leave your cap on or switch right away to a woolly cap? I agree though that time is of the essence ......especially in temps that you swim in :)
@EverydayAthleteRach
@EverydayAthleteRach 4 года назад
Hi Pat, I put the bottom half on first as my top half is toasty warm under the changing robe. I switch the hat last as I have a very warm hood on over the swim cap etc.. The wooly hat also gets in the way when I'm trying to put my top on too!

Hi Matt, I filmed this video about a year ago and have in the meantime switched to using the smoc smoc and the fourth element storm poncho, both of which I really like beacuse are softer on the inside and less bulky but provide the same changing space. Depending on your size, Lomo do a one-size one which is probably about a medium size in the other robes, gorilla robes are new to the market and offer a waterproof long-sleeved changing robe for just under £90 - I haven't got my hands on one yet, but they look promising on the website.

Love this video! I use a swim feral bag, as it has an integrated changing mat that means I can take my boots off and not be on the wet cold ground and mud. It makes it a great way to set out my clothes ready to step into, and I usually layer my vest on top of my leggings and sweatpants so I just do one step in, and then its just a case of arms into the dry robe and pull it all up, then feet into fluffy socks, fluffy crocs, and then back to the car for a cup of tea!

I've been considering getting a dryrobe but I'm struggling to understand what they do. So, when you put it on over your wet body and get changed inside. Isnt it all wet inside the dryrobe then? In my head, I think I'll be wearing a wet jacket over my dry clothes. Can someone help me understand ? 😩
@EverydayAthleteRach
@EverydayAthleteRach 2 года назад
Hi Jillian, I never use a towel underneath and the robe doesn't hold that much damp. I think the conctruction of the fibres mean the water doesn't sit on the tips. Changing robes don't get all damp like a towel does after a shower. I've never ended up with damp clothes after wearing the changing robe over them. Just to make sure though, once I get home I hang my robe up on the coat hook by the door to air and dry off. The only time they get really wet is if you drop them, or if the inner gets rained on or something (or if you put it in a washing machine, which you only do extremely rarely).

I always wear a halter neck cozzie - easy off over the head no faff on the arms - I pop on my woolly hat first - then dry off under my dry robe with a micro fibre tower - step into vest, step into my haramaki core warmer - looks like a boob-tube also known as a Japanese kidney-warmer, then I pop on a thermal top, boots off, dry feet - socks on, then thermal leggings then. . . wait for it - yes you've guessed it - a onesie - its a seriois bit of kit, fleece and absolutly divine - I like to hang around after my swim to take in the sunrise or just sit in nature for a while so I like to be toasty and this works a treat - the haramaki is perfect for stuffing my hotwater bottle into. . . liquorish tea and a huge smile on my face ;o)

Hi Gordon, welcome along. Thanks for subscribing. The bag in this video is a Lomo 60 L Dry Bag Rucksack which has removable straps and there's a link to it in the description. I did a video recently where I tested it as a towfloat. I often use a 28L Zone 3 tow buoy though (I have a yellow one and a pink one which feature in lots of my videos). 35L should be fine, unless you want to put a changing robe in it, as well as anything else, then you would need the bigger one. I got the 60L one as I want to do some swim wild camping.

Hi and thanks for subscribing. The pink and yellow ones are Xone 3 tow floats which are both 28L I think. The Lomo one which I reviewed in November is a dry bag rucksack that is 60 L. My dry robe does not fit well in the smaller bags but if easy to chuck into the large one. It depends what you want to take with you. I don’t leave things on the beach, so I always take my stuff with.

Hi Carey, welcome along! In this video I'm wearing a dryrobe, but I have done a few comparison videos and looked at smoc smoc, charlie mcleod, red, moonwrap fourth element and lomo all of which were great. If you go to my channel and type 'changing robe' it should come up with them all. I routinely use either the Fourth Element Storm Poncho, or the smoc smoc, either of which compact down into my tow float so I can take them with me on one way swims, or just keep them safe rather than leave a changing robe on the beach.
