The Dark Island Andy Stewart - RARE version

This is a very rare version of the Dark Island by Andy Stewart. Got it off a very old record of my dads from the 1970s. Most versions have the other lyrics. I've included the lyrics for this version on the video. The Dark Island is about the island of Benbercula in the Scottish Outer Hebredes. Eilean Dorcha is the Gaelic name for it I believe, and is used in the song chorus . Enjoy, if you haven't heard this version before :)

I remember this from my childhood, my mum used to play me Scottish music when she was homesick - I always feel sad when I hear it, but in a good way.

I looked everywhere for this version online and couldn't find it anywhere. I memorized it from my Dad's old records by listening over and over, but when I searched online, I only found the more common Andy Stewart version. Just when I was starting to think I was imagining things, I find your recording. Thanks so much!

Yea, very hard one to get. I remembered it from my dad's old Andy Stewart record and when cleaning out some of his things from mums place years after dad died, I came across it and thought id copy it and upload it just in case others out there might remember it and like it to. Glad u found my post

Yea, this is a hard version to find. I think Andy Stewart had this song with the different, more common lyrics on it, on one of his other albums. When I searched this one and couldnt find it anywhere online, I thought I'd post it and see if others had heard it as well. I was just a kid when dad would put this LP on and sit back and get lost in his music. I kept a couple of his old records after he died.

this is the old 45 rpm track that inspired me years back... to search high and low for Kenneth Mckellars Songs of The Hebrides LP

Yes Iver. I have no idea who wrote this version Andy Stewart sung. I don't recall it had any background of the lyrics on the record cover. Maybe Andy made them up himself because he wanted his own version lol 🤣

From memory, I believe Andy Stewart wrote the words and did the arrangement for this version. I had it on an LP in 1973/74. I am so pleased to have found it again. Thank you!

Andy wrote a set of lyrics to it, as did several other parties (the main ones are by David Silver) The credits put on some recordings, aren't always reflective of who wrote which version.

at 1:50..puzzled by that word..he says "Vistons" but it can only hold some old scottish meaning..maybe "views"
