In this first edition of Cinematography Breakdown I'll be analysing Wally Pfister's cinematography in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight. In detail, I will break down the Imax and 35mm camera setups used to shoot the film, the lighting and grips rigs in specific scenes and provide an overall analysis of the film's visual style, highlighting how the cinematography informs the overall storytelling.

They also used Vista Vision (horizontal 35mm) for certain shots when they didn't have enough IMAX cameras. The main angle of the truck flip was a Vista Vision shot

I hugely respect Hoyte van Hoytema ever since 'Let the right one in' (and both Dunkirk and Ad Astra are astounding), but I do miss Wally Pfister's *even more* naturalistic style in Nolan's films (perhaps with the exception of Dukirk where the sepia-greenish tone fits the film better)

So they shot some on IMAX and then put black bars to give a constant look to the film. *But is it just Christopher Nolan's or Wally Pfister's personal selection to not to seprate them by bars in Dark knight rises?* Which has become director's signature in every of his future projects as well.
@nireviews8492
@nireviews8492 4 года назад
The dark knight does have some scenes where the aspect ratio extends. It's just not shown in this video
@InDepthCine
@InDepthCine 4 года назад
At Imax cinemas the DI or print of The Dark Knight that was screened cut between both the native Imax 1.43:1 aspect ratio and 2.40:1 anamorphic. But for standard theatre releases they cropped the Imax negative to get a 2.40:1 aspect ratio. This footage is taken from the standard cinema release version, hence it's all 2.40:1. Generally though Nolan prefers to use the whole Imax negative, which is why you see cutting between different aspect ratios in some of his films.
@nireviews8492
@nireviews8492 4 года назад
@@InDepthCine and the IMAX scenes open up to the 1.78:1 ratio in order to fill up the TV home screen. Why didn't you use that instead when talking about the IMAX stuff? Just wondering. Great video BTW. I saw it in my suggestions and thought I was dreaming when I saw you breaking down the cinematography of my favorite film :)
@InDepthCine
