WAIT!! BEFORE YOU COMMENT!! Have you come here to tell me that it's obvious Rachel and Bruce are not a couple?! You're right, I only remembered the kiss and forgot how Rachel ended things! Thank you to everyone who reminded me about that! Although, I still would like to point out that their current relationship at the start of this film seems much more estranged than I would have imagined at the end of Batman Begins! Anyways, thanks for pointing it out!! =) I hope you enjoy the rest of the reaction!
skyhook is real. man in a reinforced jumpsuit, a balloon with a strong line goes up. plane with a gathering contraption snags the line, the person is reeled in.
I think that Nolan wants us to speculate about what's been going on between the movies. Rachel seems already annoyed by Bruce crashing her & Harvey's dinner. You'd have to imagine he does that kind of thing all the time, by the seemingly sarcastic way she says "imagine that!" As though he's been watching her like a hawk this entire time. Alfred certainly seems skeptical of his motivations behind monitoring her and Harvey.
Also, not sure if it was mentioned anywhere else, but you were asking if it was possible for that SkyHook thing in Hong Kong. Nolan made sure everything was practical in the Trilogy. The suit, weapons, vehicles, everything. He wanted everything to be possible in the real world, and not just comic book based
Also when the Joker blew up the hospital it wasn’t planned for the explosives to be delayed, so that little jump was real. Cristopher Nolan decided to keep that part in since Heath played it so good.
Heath Ledger passing away months before the film released and never getting to see the praise he would receive from audiences and Oscar award will forever hurt me
Just remember that his passing was aided by his wife ... taking the kids away ... when Heath needed help most. This probably pushed him over the edge and made him do what he did.
Yeah! I never realized that he had died back in the day when I first watched The Dark Knight in 6th grade up until a couple years later which it really sucked for a die-hard fan like me
@@ItApproachesit’s a different take on joker. He’s not my favourite joker but his performance is amazing. I put Nicholson and Joaquin phoenix ahead of him.
@@Soundtracks92Same with Maggie Gyllenhaal (Rachel). Apparently that same scene was her first time seeing him as well, and when he grabbed her face for his "scars" speech, when she was looking off to the left, she was actually looking for the film crew to cut the scene because she was so uncomfortable, but they kept rolling because it was such a genuine reaction, but I guess she wasn't too happy with them afterwards.
Fun fact: that hospital scene was 100% real, it was an old abandoned Brach's Factory that they let Nolan use to blow up and the scene where heath jumped was a real reaction too
@@macrotus. yeah it was, there's no space for improvisation in a one-shot scene. The scene was totally scripted. They rehearsed the scene a dozen times before shooting it, to make sure they had a good first shot. They certainly couldn't rebuild a factory and blow it up again (well to be honest in Inception they did, they built the building on the mountains that explode at the end, for real, 1:1 scale, they blew it up, but Nolan didn't like the explosion, so they built a giganture of the building and blew it up, and then another one). Ledger was so good, his reaction was so true, that it seemed like he wasn't expecting that delay.
You didn't mention it but maybe you caught it: Joker telling different stories about the origin of his scars depending on the person he was telling. The gangster Gambol got the "abusive father did this to me" while Rachel got the tragic "I did it for love and got rejected for it" bit.
@@LiteWeightReacting Interestingly enough, there are a few hints as to what his actual origin story might be; In his monologue about how certain things are "according to plan" for people, he lists "A truckload full of soldiers blowing up" as one of the examples, which is interesting, because it's the only example that doesn't one of his crimes in the movie. Other hints at a possible military background include how at home he seems doing drills in uniform during the funeral parade, and his line about proper torture techniques during his interrogation, as though he's been trained to administer and/or resist torture himself.
While staying ambiguous in his true identity. That's why the Joker is the ultimate villain. Nobody knows how to identify him. He's simply an agent of chaos. Always stirring the pot without ever asking why.
I'm pretty sure it got discontinued due to the fact that BEST case scenario was some dislocated joints and bruises. The CIA back in the day was unhinged 😂 Don't think it ever actually got past testing phases as even for them, they recognized the idea as pretty out there.
@@TheGoIsWin21 The CIA is and always has been unhinged/EVIL ... because they are PROFESSIONAL LIARS and REGIME CHANGERS. No "corrupted agency" EVER ... has cleansed itself and changed to "being good". Look up "Operation Ajax" from 1953, for which they LIED to two presidents and also remember that the FBI also had been very corrupt/Hoover's "personal political army" since the beginning.
fun fact, that party scene where the joker says "hello beautiful" and the entire speech, is all the first take, and the first time Maggie saw Heath in character for the first time. When she's looking away as he's grabbing her face, she's looking at Christopher Nolan because it wasn't planned hehe
Michael Caine had never seen Heath in makeup until that scene either. He is standing by the elevator and was completely shocked when the door open and he walked into the room. Incredible that it was one-take and pure perfection
Love the reasoning behind why Joker switched addresses. He knew that if he killed Rachel, one of them would lose their mind. This goes back to Joker’s point from “The Killing Joke.” All it takes is one bad day to turn the best of us into him. Also, when you said “It didn’t fully work out at the end.” I disagree. Christopher Nolan had balls to write the first ever comic book film (that I can remember) where the bad guy won. He won the moment Harvey lost his mind and Joker successfully turned Dent into him. And now they publicly have to live a lie to hide it.
Love that quote from the killing joke! And when I said didn’t fully work out, I meant it didn’t fully work out for the good guys, which it didn’t! I think that’s true! I’m a fan of the way it ended, personally!
There are other moments in the movie that pay homage to The Killing Joke. Though the dialogue is different, the interrogation room is definitely inspired by it. And Joker's multiple versions of his own origin story is also similar to how Joker says in The Killing Joke how even he doesn't quite recall the truth of how he became this way, and finishes with "If I had an origin story, I prefer it to be multiple choice."
I read it differently. He switched the addresses as a test. Joker new Batman had some personal relationship with Rachel. If Batman made the selfless choice, to save Dent, then he would have ended up saving Rachel and thus be rewarded for choosing what was best for the city. But, by choosing Rachel and acting for himself, he failed the test and ended up losing them both. Part of the Joker's reasoning in this movie is that people are selfish and will do whatever is in their best interests, even if it means others will die. In that moment, that's what Batman did. That's just how I interpret it anyway. I don't know if Nolan has commented on this, but I think it fits pretty well.
Theres another quote from The Killing Joke thats referenced or paid homage to when Joker changes his scars story “If I’m going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!” @@LiteWeightReacting
@@LiteWeightReacting I swear I'm not trying to be an asshole, but I feel compelled to mention that I also understood that you were talking about the Joker's plans and machinations when you said "obviously it didn't fully worked out at the end", just like the original commenter. Maybe you didn't mean it like that, but if you rewatch 48:30 - 49:00 I think that's what most people would get from that line. I swear I'm not trying to like call you out or anything, I just feel like there might have been a misunderstanding here and, for some reason, I feel compelled to offer my take on it :3 Love your reaction btw
It’s crazy learning all the crazy things Christopher Nolan has done throughout all his films like the rotating hallway in inception and flipping the truck in this!
@@LiteWeightReacting The problem is that a lot of the "technology" that Nolan included DOES NOT WORK. - the stupid microwave generator would vaporise the water in every human's cells too and it would not vaporise water that is underground in pipes - in Batman Begins the cable with which Batman hangs from the monorail "phases" through the pillars of the monorail - the "sonar cell phones" doesnt work, because the sound generators in the phones are probably not capable of generating / detecting those wavelengths - Batman catching up to Rachel falling from the skyscraper doesnt work, because he has more drag than she (the clothes) and gravity is "equal acceleration regardless of mass"; only air-drag could make a difference The problem is that you COULD create BELIEVEABLE TECHNOLOGY that "might work", but Nolan / his writers are LAZY and ACTIVELY HATE TECHNOLOGY & PHYSICS. Just one or two real stunts dont make up for all the stupidity.
"You need to believe in things that arent true...How else can they become?" A quote from an entirely different source but fits the ending of this movie so well! Harvey Dent as a public servant was more important for the citizen of Gotham than a masked vigilante.
Reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Lisa discovers that her town's storied founder Jebediah Springfield was really a murderous pirate, but decides to let the illusion stand in the end because of all the good it brings out in people.
@@LiteWeightReactingIt's from Hogfather, specifically the film adaptation of the book by Terry Pratchett; it's a line spoken by Death himself to enforce that there is no justice in the universe, except that which people make; if we don't believe in justice or mercy, then they won't exist. Sir Terry's body of work is a goldmine of incredible ruminations on human nature. Edit: GNU Terry Pratchett
yes, the awful ending of this movie depicts the leftist mindset.. and that includes Republican as well as Democrat leftists. We, The People are just children who must be told bedtime stories and manipulated... for our own good. Totally the opposite of what the Founding Fathers believed. We can handle Dent going insane after what he experienced. Look what happened on the boats when the decision was left up to us. Even criminals among us.
In the scene where joker enters Bruce's apartment, Michael caine was supposed to speak to him but this was actually the firs time he saw heath ledger in costume and was actually terrified and caught off guard whoch caused him to forget his lines
Truth! Caine was so terrified of Heath Ledger’s portrayal of Joker that he forgot his lines. This was the first take, but they kept that take because Caine’s shocked look was so genuine.
Maggie Gyllenhaal (Rachel) never saw Heath Ledger in his Joker make up until they filmed that scene in Wayne's penthouse. Her looking terrified and flinching from Ledger wasn't acting, she said that she was truly afraid of him. The prosthetics that made up Heath Ledger's Joker scars were anchored to his lower lip. But the glue kept dissolving and they were spending a lot of time reapplying the glue. So Ledger found out that if he licked his lower lip, it kept the prosthetic on his lip for twice as long. So he integrated licking his lip into the character like a nervous tic. Both the Batmobile and the Batpod, which is what they named the motorcycle are real, functional vehicles they built from scratch.
yours is easily one of the best reaction channels on youtube for two reasons. one, you're a Nolan fan, two, you're intelligent and have a great insight into the movies you watch and I for one really appreciate that. thank you
I Also Love The Line "You Either Die A Hero Or You Live Long Enough To See Yourself Become The Villain" Because In My Head, It's Like The Hero Does What Any Hero Does In Life And Comes With A Price, Slowly Corrupting And Changing The Hero Into The One Thing They Hate The Most, Becoming A Villain Kind Of Like Spider-Man When He Got The Black Symbiote Suit.
I have soft spot for ‘10 things I hate about you’ starring Heath, so it was pretty crazy seeing him in this role. He’s second only actor in history to win a posthumous Oscar.
@@LiteWeightReacting I'm totally sure! Your reaction to Interstellar blew me away (of course the other ones were also great)! Your style of reacting (i.e. emotions, attention to details) is awesome, this channel became my favorite reaction channel instantly! ☺
Heath's Joker was quite literally a master-class in character acting. My reaction at the end of 60% of comic book adaptations is, "You had one job! How did you screw that up?" My reaction to Heath's Joker was, "You only had one job! You didn't have to do it so well that nobody else will ever be able to play that character again!" 😂😂
@@SteveVdw I usually keep the 2019 Joker separate from the DC Joker, but yeah, it was a brilliant portrayal. I have to agree about 2016 as well. Absolute garbage, even without the Heath Ledger standards to live up to.
16:23 this part made my entire theater jump through the stratosphere 😂 it was so f**king loud and came out of nowhere. We were cracking up afterwards too cuz of how startled we got
The licking his lips was because the prosthetic wouldn't stay on properly, so Heath would keep licking around his lips to keep the prosthetic on and it ended up becoming a great part of his character and added another layer of authenticity to his performance. Heath Ledger is a fucking genius for pulling off this role to an extraordinary degree. R.I.P Mr. Ledger! You are sorely missed we will never forget you and the incredible performances you shared with us all! :) Also Christopher Nolan, what a director! Over the last two decades not only has his library of films expanded but become even more impressive, he is a master of the real!
Gordons speech at the end ... one talking about dent and the other about batman ...mirror each other with the hero we deserve but the one we need ... and the ending monologue as batman rides off always brings me to tears and chills.
Everyone talks about the hospital thing, but the truck flip is one of the coolest effects and they actually really flipped a truck end over because Chris Nolan is kinda nuts
@@Andy2481 I doubt it. This from an article on Nolan's non-CGI effects: "Amazingly, this effect was created fully in camera. The special effects supervisor on The Dark Knight, Chris Corbould, along with his team, created a large piston attached to the truck that was loaded with TNT. The piston was then triggered with a small explosion, which shot the rear end of the truck upwards into the air and sent the vehicle flipping over onto its roof. Perhaps even more amazing is that there was actually a driver in the driver's seat the whole time who was responsible for setting off the piston. The truck's cab was reinforced with steel to ensure he would be safe as the 18-wheeler flipped over."
17:08 First time I watched this in the cinema, the barked command "Look at me!" sent a cold trickle all the way down my spine 😳The two videos the Joker filmed and sent to GCN were actually designed and directed by Ledger, under Nolan's supervision. Incredible work
Saaame l saw this movie in IMAX, and when he went “LOOK AT ME”, myself and the whole theater audience let out a frightened sort of “wuhhh” and I got a trickle down my spine as well. Like damn he’s scary asf
The most heroic thing about batman is he doesn't care about people's perception of him as a hero or a villain.. he is like a stoic philosopher.. he tells a "noble lie" in the end -referring to Plato's republic because for him the uplifment of societal morality and confidence is more important than his individual fame.. uhh.. so philosophical in so many levels.
The fact that nolan took batman, and made all the gadgets, story lines, action, dialogue all so current and believable was nothing short of a masterpeace, no crazy one liners, totally belivable suit armour, fight scenes. Its just a phenomenal trilogy that no other superhero film could ever come close too. I just adore this and the other 2 films. Truly ground breaking
I absolutely love watching you react to movies. You have such an intelligent take on movies, genuine reactions, and empathy that people don't have these days. I find it incredibly refreshing. Even your laughter isn't annoying like other reaction channels.
Agreed. It’s such a treat for us to be able to watch the reaction of someone who knows Batman, but is not yet familiar with these iterations. Good stuff, Teegan!
Don’t know if anyone mentioned this yet but jokers constant licking was partly to prevent heath’s scar prosthetics from coming loose. Which just added to his creepiness.
Ledger deserved the posthumous Academy Award he got for this. It NEVER felt like a sympathy vote for me, this truly was the greatest performance of his career.
The actor putting Dent in the Police van has been a recent addition to Nolans "go to" list of actors. Actors like Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Kenneth Branagh, Matt Damon, Casey Affleck, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, etc
LMAO!! I nearly lost it at the "Beautiful Butterfly" line 😁 Yes, Skyhook was a real thing developed by the CIA and USAF, under the official name Fulton surface-to-air recovery system (STARS)
Nolan does as much as he can with practical effects. The semi truck scene where it flips over was done for real. This movie has such a grand style to it. So well made and crafted. Gary Oldman loved his role since it was one of the few his kids could watch, where he actually played a good guy. I love that little nugget from him.
I feel like that always adds such a personal effect to his movies! Even in interstellar there were a lot of practical effects! And Inception with the rotating hallway!
When this first came out, I thought Aaron Eckhart was too preppy looking to play the man who eventually becomes Two-Face. The second I saw the face reveal, I knew I was very, very wrong. He nailed it.
This is my fav movie ever. Heat's interpretation seriously made a before and after in my life. I have NEVER and don't think will ever see something be interpreted in such an amazing way. He BROUGHT him to life.
Heath walked the line between comic book stylized villian and realism. I think that's probably why he's regarded as the best Joker. He blended the two perfectly. Joaquin Phoenix is phenominal too, but in a more "if Joker was a real person this is probably what he would be like" kind of way. Both excellent in the context of their respective films.
@@netflixandchinchilla Agreed. I personally love both, but Heath's Joker will forever be the best as far as I'm concerned, as I think he set the bar too damn high. 😅
I like the funny lines in such a great dramatic movie too. It didnt make your edit but the Joker's little "Yeah" at the Mob meeting when Gambol asked "You think you can steal from us and just walk away?" makes me laugh every time i hear it. Loved the reaction.
@@thereisnopandemicwith a profile name like yours, I thought you might know the truth about males who like other males. They aren't "men". They are boys trapped inside their adult bodies.
Great reaction like always, this movie is so good. Ledger absolutely OWNED that role. He was incredibly unhinged. Seeing this in theaters was so amazing. One of the best films ever. It just is unrelenting. Heath Ledger asked to direct and film the fake Batman hostage video. He improvised the entire dialog. During the Batman/Joker interagation Heath told Christian Bale to actually hit him. And most importantly, it is rumored that when the hospital explosion didn't go off, viewers thought Heath ad-libbed the whole scene. Not true, every second of that explosion was crafted by experts, who would have gotten Ledger out of there the moment anything was going wrong. The pause was planned, and maybe Heath adlibbed some of the confusion/excitement, but it was all scripted tech wise. Christopher Nolan and special effects supervisor Chris Corbould already explain it many times. And another fun-fact about that mid-movie scene with the Joker crashing the party: that was the first time Maggie Gyllenhaal and Michael Caine saw Heath in his makep. The makeup, combined with his unhinged behavior, elicited truly panicked reactions. Go back and watch Maggie... she is kegitimately freaked out and not acting. And in the hospital scene between Harvey and Joker Because he's a master manipulator. He knew that there was a 50/50 chance that Dent would pull the trigger especially in his current mental state. He wanted to mess with him. The joker may not care much about his life but he wouldn't want Harvey to be the one to kill him. He wanted batman to have that honour. This is the brilliance of the Joker. The illusion of choice. He gives Dent the option to him right then and there, to end the madness or join it´s ranks. The choice is simple, because there isn´t one. If you look closely at the Joker´s finger he is holding the gun hammer, even if dent pulled the trigger, the hammer wouldn´t fall. Keep up the good work.
38:24 It actually probably wouldn't hurt at all in that area, considering that he has major third- to fourth-degree burns, which would have completely destroyed nerve endings needed to feel pain.
Katie Holmes from the first film was married to Tom Cruise at the time and Tom didn’t let Katie star in the second film so they had to cast someone else. Tom was heavy into Scientology at the time and acting crazy with his wife and controlling. I remember that being big in the news at the time.
@@LiteWeightReacting yeah it was really unfortunate at the time. I think a year late she got divorced from him and came out about the whole ordeal on a talk show or two. That’s where I heard her side of it. He really killed her career at that time. So sad because she’s a great actress and killed it in the first movie.
14:50 “I am a beautiful butterfly!” LMAO 🤣 Btw, I love that you curse. Makes the reaction so much more genuine. Truly the best reaction channel on the tube👌
Hans Zimmer used razor blades on piano strings, and kept the sounds going longer so it kept building up suspense and being uncomfortable at the same time
So according to at least one story, Heath Ledger was so convincing in his portrayal that some of the other actors in 20:45 this scene were actually unsettled by his behavior.
@@bigken96It is better than perhaps the Schumacher films and Dark Knight Rises but it definitely isn't better than Dark Knight or Batman Begins and it certainly isn't better than Marvel's best offerings. It's a good start after the debacle of the Batfleck era.
A tiny detail that I really like is Ledger's fingers, there's face paint on them. Ledger insisted on doing at least some of his makeup himself, so that it and his hands would look like a madman who smeared greasepaint on his face with his hands.
No, but his plans are always well executed, which is why he's a perfect foil for Batman, as he is just as genius level in his chaos, as Batman is at getting him.
He said at the end "Sometimes people deserve to have their faith rewarded!" Perfect words for the end of your reaction! I'm a LIFE-LONG Star Wars fan. I saw it at a drive-thru in '77 and again in a regular theater the next few years. It's been hands-down my #1 movie my whole life. I spare no dramatic emphasis when I say THIS is my favorite movie. The writing and execution of every part of this flick was amazing.
That's not true. Katie Holmes went on record a couple times saying she always wanted to make a movie with Diane Keaton who was her biggest idol. They made "Mad Money" together but it was being filmed at the same time as The Dark Knight, she had to choose one of them and went with Keaton
The interrogation room scene has been studied in college film schools for years. Frame by frame, it is perfection. Ledger’s portrayal of Joker is brilliant. And it is that single scene which likely won Ledger the Oscar.
This is a phenomenal movie. Heath was unbelievable in this film. His performance was epic like Brandon Lee in The Crow. They both never got to see their brilliance. He deserved that Oscar. Thank you for your content. You rock girl! 😊👍🏽

Great reaction😊 especially towards the end of the movie, dent /two-face was played by Aaron Eckhart, this is one of my favorite movies❤❤❤ I’m glad you like it❤❤❤, thank you😊
You're very observant. Noticing those subtleties about the joker's dialogue and being able to articulate their significance on a first viewing, right in the moment, is very impressive.
Maggie seeing Heath for the first time at the party and acting scared AF, was genuine. She never got to see him on set before that scene so the fright was 100% real! Hopefully you like Dark Knight Rises just as much!
One thing I really appreciate in this movie that I don't see discussed often is the relationship between Bruce and Harvey. They both have feelings for the same woman, yet it doesn't devolve into an angsty love triangle or a jealous pissing contest. Bruce respects Rachel's decision to not be with him, and he recognizes Harvey as a good man. Harvey, likewise, doesn't wear his insecurities about Bruce's status on his sleeve and doesn't get possessive over Rachel. That's such a mature depiction of male rivalry without any toxic macho bullshit.
You have a remarkable eye for detail, I have watched 'The Dark Knight' a dozen times and never noticed Ramirez in the scene immediately after Joker's capture.
The lip licking was actually just because the prosthetic makeup kept coming loose. He would push the fake lip back down with his tongue so the camera could keep rolling. Ultimately incorporated it as a tick of the character.
Everything after Gordan's son says "But he didn't do anything wrong!" and Gordan's speech.... it chokes me up everytime. Dirtying Batman's name to save the "soul of Gotham" of Harvey Dent, it's so tragic and beautiful. It kills me, the build up to the last line... "a Dark Knight" then BAM! Title, Credits and the music. Just a perfect tragic ending.
Okay so I'm watching your Arkham playthroughs right now, so cool timing. I saw this movie 8 times in theaters and love it. Heath was incredible. They all were. It does strike me watching this how much Joker cares about Batman's identity early on. That seems out of character from the games and other media but idk. I guess it does change at the end, showing the developing relationship he has with Bats, tragically cut short. Still, incredible movie and your reactions are gold.
I saw this movie with some friends on the big screen in IMAX in a jam-packed sold out theater on opening night. I'll never forget that experience. When Gordon revealed that he wasn't dead when he captured Joker, the entire theater erupted in roars and applause just like you did!
This movie was absolutely phenomenal. The acting was top notch by the entire cast.Heath ledger do doubt pulled of one of the best cinematic performances in history. Christian Bale was amazing as Batman as well. Love that we're watching this with you for the first time! It's a absolute classic!😊
The lip licking is also a improv. The prosthetics of the smile scars whatever would keep peeling off/falling off so Heath would lick his lips to keep them on and it just ended up brilliantly becoming a part of the Joker!
I kept coming back to make sure I had not missed it, and when I finally decided to check my emails and get myself a dp, I came back and saw you had uploaded it. Nolan is amazing at getting people to discuss something externally they they thought about internally for years. The ferry scene seems corny, but at the time people finally had that "good v evil" discussion after a huge blockbuster. And I LOVE that ferry scene for it.
