The Dark - Official Movie Trailer (2018) 

People are misinterpreting what the movie is supposed to be, it does go under the horror category but it's main point is to talk about abuse and what it can do to people

For those asking about the ending: Mina was never a ghoul, zombie, or monster and everything took place in the "real" world. Remember only 1 person could ever see Mina since Alex had no eyes. We saw Mina as Mina saw herself and she saw herself as her trauma - broken, hurt, angry, and all the emotions and feelings (and PTSD) that come with what she went through. Many people who are raped or molested actually blame themselves (and sometimes their parents do too) and so she was going through all the aforementioned emotions plus some guilt. This is because she hadn't yet processed it all - emotions often overpower our intellect, at least initially. Mina ran away after imagining killing her mother and her mother's boyfriend killed and buried her. People with trauma often block out events or use imagination to whisk themselves away from them. I did the latter - what Mina did - as a child when my mom would be beat up by her boyfriends when I was 6-7 years old and incapable of saving her. I would instead pretend to rescue her, beat the daylights or kill the men. Looking back, I see that it was a coping mechanism. An escape from reality. Differences between Mina and I (I was molested as a child) is I was never raped/penetrated and I wasn't angry at my mom because she wasn't cruel to me as Mina's mom was. Meeting Alex, was finding herself - someone else that had Stockholm Syndrome, guilt, and other feelings. Both had lost a sens of their selves, sort of became empty or lost. Sort of existentially wandering as they process things. Their meeting helped speed up that processing and seeing that neither was at fault or blame. There is never a valid excuse for being molested or raped - not what you are wearing, not if you said yes and changed your mind, nothing. Same with being a victim or a serial killer or whatever Josef was. While you identify as a victim you wallow in hurt, don't process it, don't get past it. As the term "getting past it" denotes: it's in the past and can't be changed. To get past it, you have to refind your self, your identity, your self-worth, or SEE that you are not the one to be blamed and that you are only a victim if you identify as one. You can instead see yourself as someone who is much more than that event or events and they don't define you - as no loss does. They are just a part of who you are. Any loss or trauma - whether that which Mina and Alex went through or loss of a parent or child, home or job - only holds you down and limits you if you cling to it and don't let it go. If you don't bring logic and reason to bear on your feelings and suffering, you begin to drown in an ocean of emotion and feeling. It's an imbalance, just as some who is super intellectual can also be out of touch with his feelings - an ocean of intellect or facts which need to be balanced by emotion and feelings. To balance them is to process and to process is to go beyond the suffering events of life - suffering that no single human being who has ever lived, is living, or ever will live, will be exempt of. So, Mina and Alex together found themselves, began to process their trauma, began to bring facts, reason, and more importantly SEEING. Unfortunately, as they were doing this the world separated them. This forced Mina to stop being feral, or living in this Devil's Den where she ran away to, and start facing reality if she wanted to find Alex. She would have to leave the false reality she created if she wanted to get the love that she never got as a kid and always wanted. Alternatively, she may have just imagined Alex and Josef as a way to escape that false reality. After all, if she didn't she would have surely died living in the middle of nowhere. The end showed that she was casting off the hatred, the anger, the guilt, the hurt, etc. that made her a "monster." It didn't mean she would forget, it just meant that she saw that holding on to it would make her a monster. As the maxim goes "Misery love company." Monsters love company too. So be careful that you do not became like the monsters you hate. The ending is the movie's way of saying that for those people who have had similar trauma as Mina or Alex or trauma of any kind and struggling, you can go on, you can go past it. It doesn't have to define who you are. You are much more than the bad things that have happened to you. On top of the things I mentioned in the past 5 years I have had several strokes, brain surgery, bone cancer in my jaw which meant removing a small portion of it, Post-Concussion Syndrome (CTE while alive), and with the strokes came suicide ideation, PTSD, depression and I had to relearn to talk, walk, count, tell time, write, type, tell the difference between a fork and spoon, etc. Those things are part of who I am, but only by going INTO them NOT ignoring those traumas, was I able to make peace with them. I had to balance it all with intellect and emotion. If I can go through those things and find peace and happiness YOU CAN TO. I AM FU&CKING ROOTING FOR YOU.

One of the most original horror films, yes horror, I've seen in awhile. Part dark fairy tale/folk lore that is more about the story than the gore. Nina is portrayed as a ghoul at first. Then the twist is more about revenge and redemption and none of the stereotypical jump scares and cliche haunted doll drivel that has made modern horror films garbage. All the trailers looked unique so I'll be watching more from Dark Sky films.

Anyone else getting vibes of Let The Right One In while watching this?

This ended up being my personal fave of that year. It haunted me for months after and have never quite plucked up the courage to watch it a second time.

As bad as it sounds this movies ending is a fairytale ending for the survivors of abuse who don't have the same chance of a happy ending. Made me very emotional to think on that

MAN,THIS MOVIE IS A BIT DRAGGING BUT ONCE THINGS UNVEIL BEFORE YOUR VERY EYES,IT'S THE KINDA MOVIE THAT STICKS LONG AFTER YOU DONE.I DONT KNOW BOUT YA'LL BUT FOR ME IT'S ABOUT TRAUMA,THAT THE CHARACTERS WENT THROUGH IN THE HANDS OF THEIR ABUSERS,AND THEY JUST FOUND SOME KINDA HEALING ELEMENT WITH EACH OTHER.

This is more like a dark fantasy horror film, it was very well made with a modern Grimm fairy tale vibe.

Saw this movie last night. I was expecting something completely different. When I watched the movie, I almost had to stop because of how relatable the whole thing was. I truly adore this movie now.

I dont care if u say this aint a scary movie.. it really doesnt look like one ... but god.... im more than glad that i found it in the scarry movies section.. otherwise I problably would never find it and this film touched me real hard..for real...just amazing..love it..

I just saw this movie and it was incredible. It was original and poignant . I'm not going to give anything away. It's too good. I question it's classification even though it has body horror elements. This is a great movie with great cast, acting, and direction. The tension builds and the reveal hits home. It's run time makes it ideal.

So i have started watching horror movies for last couple weeks, and somehow i got on to this one, and what i can tell you - it was one of the best movies i ever watched, it’s so different and truly hits differently. A masterpiece!

Different emotions ...but its beautiful story and ur fantasy can do many others endings of mina and guys story..i like it

Anyone looking to what the ending meant, here is my best guess n a reasonable theory! She basically had some kind of demon in her apparently as it gives you clues throughout the movie that she is slowly being possessed n that's what really kept her alive probably! You see as she finds the boy who also went through abuse n was scarred like her, so she could relate to him n hence made her first real friendship n made her first proper interaction with another decent human being. You see as she never found anyone like him or was just not wanting to! Instead, she just ended up killing them n eating them so she stayed the same as she fed the demon lurking inside of her throughout the years! But then finally because of the boy she interacted with in a more humane way than anyone else before she had met, she started to finally change in different, more human like ways, as the demon gradually started to fade away n by the end of the film, she pretty much fully transformed back into a normal human being as well as being able to eat normal food too! Hope that explanation helps mates! 😊

I just watched this and the blind kid navigating his way through an unfamiliar home to stealthy stab that woman was very stupid. Everyone in this movie is apparently a ninja because even the old lady managed to sneak up on the experienced killer while she was standing in the kitchen in broad daylight. I found Alex’s character very obnoxious, however it was nice to see Mina finally start to heal after so long.

I didn't think Mina a zombie or undead or whatever many other reviews called her. She was raped, beaten, and buried, but survived and "went feral". She lived like a monster in the woods, and came to believe she was a "monster" (thus the grotesque face she saw herself as having). The time spent with Alex was enough to bring her back to reality, i.e. eating the sugar cereal by the lake while drawing. Meena was hitching a ride to start a new life, perhaps to find Alex. Her face was normal, because she left the monster behind.

This could have been a good movie, but they leave way to many questions unanswered. Who was Alex? Who was the kidnapper? Why did Alex not wanna go home? WTF happened to his eyes? And Mina never even asked him a single question, herself! It kinda drove me nuts.

Omg, such a good horror drama! Its different but in a great way! One of them rare horror films that actually give a strong message out n make you emotional throughout it n make u think about the harsh world we live in at times! Everyone should see this if your a true horror fan like me!😆

Loved the way it was going but the end was a let down.

Bought this movie Friday and have watched it twice..it has the warm bodies vibe but far from a comedy..I loved this movie but left allot of questions unanswered..not sure they could do a follow up but some more information about the movie would be great..

Just saw it...interesting stuff. I've always said the reason there's no version of Beauty and the Beast with the genders reversed is the cliche that women are the ones who can love someone in spite of their appearance-this movie takes care of that by making the dude blind, lol. It's a dark fairytale of overcoming the horrors of abuse, and in spite of the brutal murders of some innocents (which, honestly, you just have to overlook, lol) the story is sadly, disturbingly sweet. And while the girl is a demonic flesh-eating zombie as opposed to a virus-infected one, it puts a spin on the zombie and “don’t go in the woods” genres that I wasn’t expecting. Could make for an equally interesting sequel too.

For those wanting a scary movie this isn't it. It's very slow and whilst I found it interesting enough to watch whilst i had nothing better to do I wouldn't recommend this for your typical movie night. It's more sad than anything.
