Oh i can relate to him for sure. Especiamly the mom thing. My mom has a SERIOUS SERIOUS PROBLEM with negativity. And just like Tony I wanna see her happy but..... She ain't having it. I also have done some criminal shit in my life and just like Tony I had weird nightmares, has paranoia, dreams REALISTIC VIVID DREAMS of getting set up and shot by ppl I never would expect to do that. Violence, sex, etc..... dude I get Tony on some things. But could I kill my nephew the way he did? Nope. I could not. He had no conscience. He had a SELECT FEW that he loved and cared for but outside of that forget it. He just knew how to hide the monster when he needed to. What was that he said? He was a Frankenstein? Lol

Tony was a depressed sociopath. Because his mother didn't give him the love he needed, he always felt a sense of not being good enough. This caused him to put others down to boost himself up. Although after seeing the hurt he caused, it made him feel more depressed. The cycle continued over and over.

Tony Sopranos love of animals came from the fact that they could probably give him more unconditional love than any human being could, including in his own family. He had a love for horses and other animals, and cats, there is a scene with Paulie that is quite funny as Paulie hates cats but Tony shows a fondness towards them.

Tony is a villian no doubt but he's also a victim in a cycle of violence and abuse. He could've been a great man if he was born with the right oppotunities and a less abusive mother. As much of bad guy he is he did break the cycle. His daughter was studying law and his son even though rocky became associated with film.

As a self admitted student of human nature you've actually broken down the psychology of a many fictional characters I personally relate to and no lie brv, you take on these characters is very refreshing. Also thank you for doing Tony Soprano. If I can suggest that you do Raymond Reddington next or in the near future it would be appreciated.

The best way to describe Tony is lawful evil. A Lawful Evil character is an evil character who either tries to impose or uphold a lawful system on others without regard for their wishes, and/or adheres to a particular code. They believe in order, but mostly because they believe it is the best way of realizing their evil wishes.
@palabrajot505
@palabrajot505 25 дней назад
Except he broke that code whenever it served his purpose. His code is very clear on not raising a hand to a made man, yet he murdered two Captains with his bare hands when it suited his needs. In the case of Ralph, it was out of rage and in the case of Christopher, it was 50/50 rage and convenience. He despised Christopher, but he also saw him as a burden that needed to be removed. So, lawful evil mixed with wishy-washy hypocrisy.

I had a mother like Livia. She was passive aggressive and a rageaholic. In response, I became a overachiever, I only cared that she knew so I could rub it in her face. Tony's not a psychopath, he's a sociopath. Psychopaths are born (nature) and sociopaths are made (nurture).
@nichobee
@nichobee 6 месяцев назад
No that's somewhat a myth. They're the exact same thing, they only describe different temperaments. They are both descriptive terms for anti social personality disorder. People with ASPD are born that way. The reason the nature vs nurture debate arises is due to narcissism. Narcissists very often get confused with ASPD personalities, because they both lack any empathy and both seek power (for different reasons). Narcissists are a combination of genetic predisposition and nurture. You can have narcissist genes but grow up in a normal environment, and hence grow into a normal person People with ASPD are a different breed. They don't feel fear and have a much higher threshold for boredom. They have narcissistic traits like anyone else, and some may be Narcissists too, and as such a 'hybrid'. Serial killers tend to be hybrids. They're similar disorders, hence why they both fall into the cluster B category of personality disorders; personality disorders that manifest in relationship with other people. Almost no fictional character represents a completely accurate picture of cluster B disorders, as they need to meet the writer's narrative goals. That's why Tony seems to genuinely love his kids. A real life ASPD personality wouldn't love anyone...and I don't know where David Chase found this idea that sociopaths love animals, because I've never seen it in any other literature; animal cruelty is a hallmark sign of ASPD in children. I don't think Tony is a sociopath. He better fits as a malignant narcissist. But a narcissist doesn't love anyone either...

Truly, absolutely, and definitely yes, he’s evil. 1. He lowers the standards of everyone around him. In business, love, his own expectations of himself. 2. He takes advantage of other peoples weaknesses and disadvantages for his own benefit. 3. He indulges recklessly and without shame or surcease in every moral sin and is enraged if held to account. 4. He has no respect for anything, from property to his marriage to money to his own health. His only code of loyalty is to himself and his own comfort. 5. He holds others to a standard never attains himself. He demands they listen, be loyal, pay him without complaint, and never talk to anyone outside the “family,” yet he not once does exhibit these behaviors.

This angered him and he wanted revenge. Sonny West said he felt as though he was hypnotized and he found himself arranging the hit. Just minutes before it could be carried out, Elvis called it off. Tony warned Ralph to never make another fat joke. He made one about Tony and was punished for it. The horse was irrelevant.

The horse was not irrelevant. Tony was really and deeply hurt by that. But the fat joke was the final straw 😂

On the topic of Jackie Jr and the way Tony went about having the hit done, it's worth mentioning that due to recent events, there is also an increased emphasis on not *directly* saying anything at all, for Tony. The whole point of the situation he's set himself up in is for him not to be considered the top dog, and the possibility of a wiretap is everpresent, especially with Pussy and whatnot in very recent memory

It always kills me when I see people say characters are either (inherently) good or evil and fail to actually pick up the nuances involved. For all it's flaws one thing the "Many Saints of Newark" film does mad well is show us that most of Tony's memories from the show were very inaccurate and that he was a fairly normal child. The antisocial personality traits and behaviors escalated over time just as we see in the show and early on we even see him resist em. But as the show goes on it's like one barrier after another breaks til it finally becomes something like "anything goes" for T. So he starts out a relatively normal kid in a somewhat extreme environment. He has to cope with this environment to survive and one mechanism is to try to function within it. Once these things become normalized it's easier to see how antisocial personality traits and behaviors become a regular thing and get worse with time. It hurts Tony to have someone go to the Feds and it hurts Tony to kill a friend so the best answer is to dehumanize the friend, lay the blame on the friend, and depersonalize the situation as much as possible while compartmentalizing the relationship into a "friend" period prior to the betrayal and "rat" period afterwards so that he's doing something he has to do which isn't his fault to someone that isn't even human. Much of Tony's income comes from the misery of others be it rip off stocks, usury, dept collection, extortion, murder for hire, tax scams that funnel resources from those that need it most, etc, and knowing that would be hard to live with for most pro-social people so to cope a person would use a number of tactics that effectively function as, or are, antisocial personality traits. When I was young and in the streets gang banging, pulling stick-ups, selling poison to my own community and all that I couldn't care and feel all that so I became numb to it all and compartmentalized while rationalizing it as much as possible, dehumanizing people, and depersonalizing. BUT once I got a older, moved, and was outta that environment it didn't take long for a lotta that to start to crack. It was like I spent years with some very significant antisocial traits but was able to shake it initially just by exiting the environment that made me that way and then consciously as it was better for me to feel even the bad parts than live in this world of selective empathy and all that. And I've seen the same thing play out in a number of other people. It's mad logical and from what I've seen supported by the evidence and my own lived experience. It's a coping mechanism. Some people are born with antisocial personality traits and some people develop em as a means of survival in a particular environment. Tony always struck me as the latter, it just reached a tipping point at the end and got even more ugly. But it's entirely possible that in another environment with different influences he is a fairly normal person. This is one of the few videos I've seen on the subject that acknowledges that.
