I once got my van stolen from that street there in the introductory clip, right next to Ripley’s Believe It Or Not. I was surfing in December, full wetsuit, REALLY COLD ocean with even colder wind whipping around, and when I got out of the water I realized that I was a victim of GTA. I had to slosh my way over to the Police Dept IN my wetsuit, with none of my belongings, and file a police report while not being able to feel my extremities. Love you AC 👏
@@metalmike570 If we're being honest... Whether the doors are locked or not. If they want the van, they're going to get it. Car thefts in NJ are pretty next level. Depending on where you are, they'll take the car with you in it. 🤣
Who would have believed 20 years ago that you could go on a guided tour without leaving your house? You are coming into your calling sir. Excellent content! I finally broke down and subscribed. Be safe and keep up the Top Notch work.
I ran the parking lot at the 500 Club during those years. I often talked with Raul "Cooks Books" Suarez. Great man. He drove a 1965 black Dodge Dart, with the Cooks Books sign on the driver's door. But I never knew he went inside the club to sing. Thank you Lamont for sharing that.
Likely this gentleman may have had some street connections and his killer was probably dealt with outside of the judicial system. Probably just wishful thinking on my end but it wouldn't be anything out of the ordinary in shady areas such as this.
Thank you Lamont for the tour. I love this type of video and the fact that you took us along for the ride. Also, the history is fascinating and sad. Please stay safe and I look forward to your next video. Being a content creator is truly your calling. You are definitely walking in your path.
I just recently vacation in Atlantic City. I really loved the atmosphere. The weather was perfect, and I stayed at the Ocean Resort. The seafood was delicious and won a little money. The boardwalk was so entertaining. I do plan on going back soon. I live in Las Vegas, and I like Atlantic city much more but bad things unfortunately happens everywhere in this world. No safe haven.⛱ 🌴 🎰 🍸
It's truly terrifying that, regardless of the lives we're living now, most of us will one day be forgotten, as if we never existed. Unless someone like Lamont comes along and shares our story with others. That's the part about his videos I absolutely love the most.
Hi from New Jersey Lamont. Thank you for giving me a tour of Atlantic City it definitely is not the same as it was 16 years ago. I wouldn't waste my time
I spent my summers in AC as a kid. Go to Wildwood now, but I rode over to AC two years ago for the first time in about 25 years and I didn't even recognize it.
I live just 45 minutes from Atlantic City, I have so many horror stories of that place dating back to when I was little. If I were to give anyone any advice if they plan to visit, DO NOT WALK THE BOARDWALK ALONE AT NIGHT!
I work for AtlantiCare. I’m 25 miles from AC. please don’t be so dramatic. I’ve walked the boardwalk alone at night, summer, winter, etc. it’s really not that bad. Mind your business and people will mind theirs.
@@aleece9238 Who's being dramatic? I was sharing advice from my personal experience, you don't know what happened to me or know anything about me. Because you live closer to AC doesn't make you an AC expert but thanks for replying to my comment from a YEAR ago smh.
Must say I have watched all your videos Lamont this one was the greatest one so far loads of information nice views and ran for a good length of time.I would love to see more of this type of videos as some of us can’t get to these sorts of places to see for ourselves.thank you so much for making the videos you do as when ever I see you’ve posted another video it makes my day with love from Scotland
I came on tonight and Go Lamont my old stomping grounds tonight. Love this Lamont. Yes I do know a lot about Atlantic City my Aunt worked on the boardwalk for many many years. She was born in 1925. She is gone now unfortunately. But I heard many stories about how wild that place was. I miss the boardwalk but now a days is way different.
I'm watching you from across the Atlantic in England right now. I love your videos please keep up the amazing work. Would be so cool to see you I'm England
It is sad that these young ladies. Lost their lives. But when you put yourself out there. Anything can happen. I hope they catch the creep. Thanks Lamont and stay safe
As a runner I used to leave work at 11PM and run the boards. It was great and easy on my knees because of the "spring" in the boards!!! And its the OEM route for the casinos with emergencies
Speaking from experience and living for basically all my life there it literally sucks the life out of you. I've worked in all but one casino there, got hooked on drugs there, was homeless there, was attacked and got staples in my head there and so much for. The whole city is skid row. Thank god I am one of the lucky ones that got out and now by the grace of God I have over 16 months sober. It will never be like it was years and years ago. IF IF ANYONE DECIDES TO EVER GO THERE NEVER LEAVE THE BOARDWALK AND ALWAYS BE IN A GROUP !
I was born in Atlantic City and raised in Bargaintown, an urban area about 15 miles away. I long for the days before casinos. BTW, my father was Isadore Green. He and his brother Marty owned Green's Army & Navy on Ohio and Atlantic Avenues. It's now a bus terminal.
When you decide to do another video on AC history, remember, Resorts Casino was once a military hospital during WWII, then a hotel. It later became the first Casino in AC and is a landmark. I wish I knew you were here, I would have loved to have met you. ❤️ BTW, I certainly hope you "pack heat" walking through some of these seedy places.
What a well put together video! You had some really great photos, and took us back with pics to show! I loved it- My mom is a high roller in AC & she goes all the time- by herself. I’m always telling her to watch her back out there because, it’s grimey and very undesirable folks out looking for trouble- you step one block off that strip & it’s ghetto-fabulous! ⛔️ you better watch out, the energy is shady as all get up! I sent her this video to enlighten her- keep them coming, your great!
I was born and raised here in NJ and AC is very dangerous and shady!! NJ has a ton of crazy history! Those women's murders are still unsolved! Insane! Great job! Love ur content
You did a wonderful job here, Lamont with all the history, the stories of this old resort plus it felt like I was walking along beside you the whole time. All that you covered involved unsolved murders occuring there. A very sad yet nostalgic piece of work. I've been there several times as a kid then teenager for a school trip ( and the Martin Luther King assassination happened during that time). Just indelible memories. Thanks for taking us along on your video !
Good insight on Atlantic City I use to live there when as a teenager me and my family moved from Brooklyn NYC to Sovereign and Atlantic atop the Chinese restaurant,I miss AC sometimes
This video style is awesome!! Great job and Thankyou 🤘 Not only do i learn so much from your videos but the way you explain everything it makee me feel like I'm actually going on a adventure with you🤘🤘
I hope you stop at the wonderful Stanley homes projects in Atlantic City, the most beautiful place in the entire city with such friendly welcoming residents…
I was born and raised in Atlantic City, so it was a pleasant surprise (kinda) to see that you went there and gave it a thorough look-through and such a detailed explanation of how life is out there. There's so much that happens out there, it's insane. And yet, most people who've never been or who only go there for tourism are blissfully unaware of the rampant prostitution, drug trade, homelessness, violence, and soul-crushing poverty that plagues the city to this day. I was almost hoping you'd highlight some of the apartment complexes such as the High Gate off the White Horse Pike, the apartment complex next to it called Back Maryland off Maryland Ave., Venice Park, and another low-income housing building on Vermont Ave. Back Maryland is also known as one of the worst, if not THE worst area in Atlantic City to be in. I've also got stories about homeless people taking shelter UNDER the boardwalk and it becoming such an issue that police are routinely called to kick them out. I used to do a variety of jobs in Atlantic City including, but not limited to, Public Works and Social Work. You DO NOT want to know what's under the boardwalk, by the way. That, the fact that prostitution and drug dealing can happen in broad daylight (personally witnessed a few 'transactions' myself), and the fact that most, if not all of the places I mentioned are home to countless people who are living in squalor in bed bug-infested, dilapidated, moldy, filthy Section 8 slums. Oh, and in many cases, those people are battling vicious drug and alcohol addiction and/or mental illness, which is so wonderfully hidden away from the glitz and glamour of the boardwalk and casinos. SIDE NOTE: I also used to work at the Taj Mahal until it closed and was rebranded as the Hard Rock back in 2015. And man, let me tell you that the place was falling apart and plagued with BAT AND RAT infestations, mold, and what have you to the point that bats could be seen flying around in the auditorium during live performances. I'm not sure they corrected those issues, to be honest.
@@OverPowerProductions Aside from the usual pilings of trash that gets kicked or stuffed between the boards, you sometimes might find makeshift bunkers that homeless folks and drug abusers dig up for shelter and for a "safe" place to get high. The bunkers are usually filled with anything between dirty waste-soaked clothes, food containers, used syringes, used condoms (because on some occasions, sex workers will do their business down there), and even old mattresses people drag under there to make the space more comfortable to sleep. Dead animals as well, but that's a given. Last I remember, they were trying to reinforce the boardwalk, so no one could dig their way under it to make a home out of it. The best part is that some homeless folks I've encountered say they prefer the boardwalk bunkers to the Atlantic City Rescue Mission, because the bunkers at least aren't infested with bed bugs.
i lived their for a year, first 2 weeks i got into 8 fist fights i was detached from reality after that, seeing people u fight everyday on the street. after the dealers found out i was a boxer.they had me fight other junkies for less $10 each time. they would have me chase down people that gave problems.....this is all on florida avenue. the hookers got beat and raped. the hookers i knew, i have seen each of them with black eyes, mis aligned jaw...ive seen a dead body on a dumpster. the dealers had me live in the house they sold drugs out of but they caused me so much problems i left the trap house and rather lived in the street or basement of tropicana. this all went down lil over a year ago. i grew up in the suburbs i was completely detached from reality and felt the full force of ptsd. always looking behind my back, wouldn't go anywhere without a knife. i was close to doing some really dark shit that surprisingly....my dealers talked me out of doing. today i have 31 days clean.
The Andrew Boardman thing makes a lot of sense because even in beach towns without an actual pier or boarded beachfront like Hampton Beach, the street on the beach is typically called a boardwalk.
Aww man, I wish that I knew that you were in my neck of the woods today!! Loved this video, and was happy to see places that I live near. Thank you for the history. Keep up the great work that you do!! Rock On Lamont!!
It has been years since I've been to Atlantic City, New Jersey and I am told, many casinos have closed. Once you ventured outside the boardwalk into the city of Atlantic City, it is a dump. Atlantic City also has a large Puerto Rican population. Now that I am 67 years old and the crime is terrible, I don't travel much and especially alone. I use to hook up with my cousins from New York City and Virginia Beach in Atlantic City. After I loose my $10 in quarters, I would just hang out on the boardwalk or go up to our hotel room to watch cable. My cousins were gamblers. We had fun hanging out in Atlantic City back in the early 2000's. Lamont, please travel down to Durham, North Carolina and do a video of what use to be Black Wall Street. In the 1800s and early 1900s, Durham’s Black Wall Street housed a vibrant and successful variety of Black-owned businesses.
@@gabbycarter965 You're welcome. I cannot believe you have never heard of Durham. This is where the world renowned Duke Medical Center and Duke University is located and the HBCU, North Carolina Central University. Duke University has one of the best basketball teams in the ACC. Durham, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill, North Carolina is known as the Research Triangle.
@@carlosbright9615 I am familiar with the those places pertaining to Durham. In fact I currently reside in Greensboro( Although I was born and raised in NYC) I just haven't heard of a Black Wall Street pertaining to Durham.
It's so great you did a video on the dark side of Atlantic City. The last time I was in Atlantic City was in the summer of 1991. My girlfriend and I we're on a bus for 6 and 1/2 hours and didn't get there till after midnight due to the first bus never picking us up. And oh guess where we had reservations and stayed for two nights at the fabulous Trump Taj mahal what else!!!!! I still have the pink plastic buckets from there and I use them for pencils and pens. I do have some photos there used to be a mall up near the steel Pier and I bought a beautiful sterling silver bracelet loaded with lockets that I still have it was raining the next day when we explored all the hotels I remember going to the show boat and the Merv Griffin hotel next to the Trump Taj mahal and several other hotels we just wanted to see what they were like. I also remember there were some very old landmarks that still were among the newer newer things on the boardwalk. But there was an older vintage part of neighborhood still in existence at that time I would have loved to have traveled through that but thanks again for a good memory cuz I have the pictures to prove it!!!
The fact on how the boardwalk got the name boardwalk blew my mind! Being from eastern Pennsylvania, people often travel to vacation there and I always assumed it was called that for the same reason you did. I never questioned it. Thanks for that info I otherwise would never have known
My name is Bonnie and I live in Salt Lake City Utah, but I grew up in a New York City. I was born in Atlantic City on November 24th 1943 I lived on 30 one, North pennsylvaniavenue. Now it's a parking lot when my grandparents were alive. They bought that house in the early 1900s and lived there until they passed away.., I found this so interesting. Thank you so much for sharing. I enjoyed every moment of it. Especially the blog walk I remember as a little child. They made swap wood or caffeine. And I used to be in my Papa's arms and watch the Mexican cafe. Also, there was a big planter peanut, a big peanut man. You must have been 78 feet tall. And I remember that. I really enjoy this thank you please if you can. We'll get more expensive at north pennsylvania avenue that would mean the world to me It's a shame what's happened to Alex Betty, but deliver half for it. While ever retard it thank you for making my night bonnie❤
I haven't been to Atlantic City in about 15 years. I used to go every summer back when I was a kid and *it was SO MUCH FUN!*-- the arcades, the beach, the food. I remember watching Celestine Tate Harrington, a woman with no arms who used to perform on the boardwalk by playing the piano with her tongue. I remember that shop on the boardwalk that always had lewd and offensive t-shirts on display in their windows. I wonder if that place is still there. I remember when everything in that boardwalk mall was affordable before they turned 90% of the mall into luxury stores. I remember walking through that big tunnel that connected Bally's and Sands. It might have been two other casinos but whatever it was both the tunnel and the two casinos are long gone. I remember going to the steel Pier and getting on the rides.
Lamont, Thanks for the history of Atlantic City. I find the place interesting! It's an international attraction like New York. Some foreigners like to go there too. I live in New Jersey, so I have been there a ton of times and have many books about the place! Teachers conventions are in Atlantic City too and my parents were teachers at the start of their careers, as a kid I used to go with them to Atlantic city sometimes for that. Thanks for the upload.
Your videos are always informative. I hope that you will do one about Vegas too. Sometimes we forget the landmarks can have a dark history too. Thanks for your hard work.
LaMont , my name is wheelz ….aka a paraplegic in a wheelchair….I’m heading to Atlantic City early December for a week and would like to hire you as my Guide ….You are the man !
Thanks for watching this channel. I just found Lamont today. Luv from the east coast usa. I'd love to visit Scotland. My sister was there many years ago and loved it.
If you go straight across from Atlantic City, you’d end up in Spain. Fun fact, in AC, tourists are called “Shoobies”. They would hop off the train with their lunches in shoe boxes. Greats such as Nina Simone and Billie Holiday got started in AC as well!
I was born and raised in Jersey but I think I only went to Atlantic City once. It has always been known for high crime. We always went to Seaside Heights. I hope you picked up some saltwater taffy. You can't get better than NJ taffy.
Interesting. I've been to Atlantic City at least once. Drove down there from Connecticut when I was going through a full year of school at the SubBase in New London. I never had heard of these cases.
Lamont , I used to go down to Atlantic City when I was younger and then a teenager with my family in the mid 70's & 80 - 86 from Philly .We would spend the summer months down there ,so much had changed since then .
Dr Charles Peter Hackett’s father wrote a book called the last Happy hour. In it he references to taking his son with him to Atlantic City. Telling his son ‘ You see those working girls on the corner, they cannot be saved ‘ . Then there’s Terry Oleson, he worked maintenance at Golden Key and says he never went out back of the building ? Yeah ok . Wish it could get solved .
Really wish you would go up to long island and do a story on lisk. I saw a documentary on a&e called killing season about lisk, the man you were talking about they even interviewed him on there after they tore down the motel, and various other murders in around the area. Love the content, I always watch your videos. Thanks for the work you do. Godspeed.
Been there many times when I was a kid as my family thought of it as the "go-to" vacationing spot. Nowadays it's only gotten worse and the local government here in Jersey just ruins their projects here which destroys the local economy. I've been through there many times recently and I've seen first-hand the prostitution and whatnot, it's only become more severe.
I love your videos! The back story and history along with the walkthrough of significant areas but most of all bringing light to forgotten victims or loved ones. You bring it all together with your genuine compassion or outrage. I’m really glad your channel is really taking off!! It’s remarkable how fast it’s growing but not surprising… looking forward to you getting the following you deserve!
Was to Atlantic City in the 1980's-90's with my aunt and nephew. Being a Jersey Shore native, we went more to Asbury Park, Pt. Pleasant, Seaside Hghts.
Thank you for sharing this video. Thank you Lamar some places in telling stories all over the world places that I may never see .l have on my multiple sclerosis and injury from my knee that causes arthritis now. I may never get to walk around those places too long.Thank you very much
Wow Lamont your awesome, loved this video. You honestly do your homework. This video was very interested. I say”, bad people never die. Rest In Peace to all this poor innocent people. Well said Lamont at Large💕👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Are you kidding? Medical resort is a perfectly apt term. A Sanatorium is one, singular building. Lamont was speaking of many such establishments being built not one.
Maybe not many people remember Raul. But it doesn't matter, because in his time, he would have touched many people. I have met people like him in my life who have been genuinely kind. You NEVER forget them. May he Rest in Peace 💗💗💗
Wow! Fantastic video here, Lamont. You should continue this - do ones for NYC, LV Strip - all the touristy places. People are drawn to the macabre and weird. Please keep doing these type ones, with the unusual traits and history. PS Hope you visit the UK soon, I live here.
