I'm 39 years old and have reached a stage in life when new movies, music, and games just don't cut it for me anymore. I have no interest in them, so I have built my own comfort library of entertainment. I've realized all I need is to cycle through the media entertainment I loved most. I've been doing this for the past 5-6 years while sprinkling in about 5% new stuff and it hasn't gotten old or boring. With about 400 movies, 5000 songs, and 50 of my favorite games, it doesn't seem repetitive because I only spend an hour or two per day consuming them so the cycle is long.

Absolutely! I’m right there with you bro. More so, I’m either playing games I loved from my younger years or I’m catching up on the ones that I missed out on or never finished. And with a catalogue a expansive as the PS2 has, It’s gonna be keeping me busy for awhile 😂 But yeah, most of the new stuff just can’t hold my attention like older games. I like to explore all the details of older releases.

@@Vynsent Nothing rivals the PS2. I've been playing GTA San Andreas and NFS Most Wanted recently and it's been a blast.

Bro… You are so right. There’s a RU-vidr that I used to watch back when Borderlands 2 came out. His name is MorninAfterKill. He’s a great content creator that he only plays One game. Borderlands 2. Even now, he makes Borderlands 2 content. There's nothing wrong with this. The problem comes when there's no more content being released for the game. It's like being stuck in a moment that never passes. There's no growth there. You can't move forward if you're running backward chasing the good old days. There’s so much that life has to offer and you can't experience those things by being stuck in the past. So yes… remember the good old days but don't stay too long or you could get stuck because Nostalgia is one hell of a drug.

I'm 35 and shortly after the release of Half-Life 2 a huge cut in my life happened. At 16 I had to move to anothe county, leaving my friends and family behind and experienced horrific things. PTSD has become a part of my personality, and gaming nostalgia is like a time travel to a time when my soul was really free and not that scarred and disturbed. I helps me to concentrate on joyfull things instead of the pain. Back then I was open and curious, now I get motivated to try maybe one or two games a year and there are maybe 5 games I frequently play, that have been released after the mid 2000s. Maybe it's just me, but I also prefer the simplicity of games from then. Nowadays many games seems so complex, that I often have the feeling of playing a game in a suboptimal way. For example guns in games: Often you have so many options to personalize them, which makes me feel I didn't perfection them. Back then, you picked up a gun from the floor and that's it. Not that I complain, but now it often needs more time and energy to fully understand a game and all it's detailed options, at least for me.
@Vynsent

I definitely agree my friend! A lot of the older games left plenty of room for imagination as well as much simpler gameplay, which I definitely enjoy more as well! Nostalgia can be a great thing though, especially when it comes to revisiting better times. I just know how much of a slippery slope it can become when it’s a crutch! Which was the case for me for some years 🥲

@vysent bro this video is done soo well, you really have a talent for making content man 👏, i really think your channel is going to blow up soon 🚀 deservedly! I think a lot of people can relate to this topic, but it is very dependent on context. I’ll give you a few examples in my case, I have a gaming collection that spans from 1995 to around 2010 (this encompasses the ps 1,2,3 as well as the Xbox og/360, n64/GameCube/wii. I explicitly stopped collecting and playing games after this point, why? I felt towards the beginning of the ps4 to present innovation and risk taking in games has died. The breadth of games on a ps2 is what made it so memorable, today all those small companies that developed those off beat games no longer exist. Corporations have seen the data and understand that the old model does not work, this is why free to play is so big, and companies do not want to go against what is proven. I quit in protest to this, I don’t need to play resident evil hd collection or remake for the 15th time. The original was and will always be fine. It’s like us saying physical games are dying or don’t come with a manual or poster, gen z never expected a physical game or manual or poster, companies see this and react accordingly, why sell a dvd and let someone own it when you stream it to them, I think the concept of ownership is severely lost among the new generations. I play the old games to take a break from the present, but once that console is turned off it’s back to the here and now. I have 4 year old nieces, I like to show them cartoons and music I grew up with, the music these days is soo explicit for children and people call that freedom of expression. There’s a lot more examples but these are just a few to share, I think going back to when it was simpler provides everyone with an oasis from the state of the current world
@Vynsent
@Vynsent 7 месяцев назад
You’re definitely on to something my friend! The sense of ownership is definitely lost in time as you said, and it really is such a sad thing to see. I guess that’s why I’ve found myself collecting every bit of physical media I can find nowadays 😅 But I’m very glad to hear that you can still find a bit of escape in the classics, and thank you so much for watching my content 😁 This was a strange topic to tackle, I’m glad you were able to resonate with it ❤️

Just found this channel. Keep the content coming. I did this for years. Trying to calm my stress with 90s video games and even watching 90s commercials all day. I was unhappy with my job and myself. I switched careers and now I still love retro gaming, but no longer need it every day. Well, I’m usually too busy with work or my wife now. I think it’s about balance and I agree that self awareness is key.

💥💥I have nostalgia i realize everything back in the '80s '90s and 2000s wasn't great, but for me i would take those years over what we have in this current generation any day a week. Case in point when my mom met my stepdad in 1995 my real dad passed away in 1989 My stepdad had a one bedroom apartment and he was a mechanic making good money for the time. That one bedroom apartment that he had was was about 550 a month. Now that same one bedroom apartment in that same building is 1,200+ a month. Also another reason why a lot of us have nostalgia we were kids or young adults then. We didn't have the burden of high prices everywhere or bills or having a damn job with a boss or coworkers we don't like for the most part.

I feel you my guy! We just wanna go back to those simpler times for sure, and a lot of these games can help us do that! But there's still a lot to enjoy in the moment, it just gets a little more complicated as we grow older forsure xD

@@VynsentI have a hard time enjoying the present. I don't really rock with how Society is now. I don't even like crowds every time i turn around there's a mass shooting on on the news. I don't do anything but go to work and come home. A lot of the stuff that I used to do back in the 80, 90s and 2000s are obsolete most of the clubs or spots bars i used to go to in the 2000s are gone, The arcades i used to go to are gone. Places like Six Flags and Kings Dominion are really not that big of a deal. Those amusement parks are struggling with declining attendance. In my area we have a mall in the parking lot we used to have a carnival that used to come every year they stopped coming around 2014 because of declining attendance. Malls are disappearing all across the United States. I don't really find movies and TV shows to be that good. you can find some good TV shows on Netflix and Hulu and Amazon Prime video but the movies that come out nowadays are just remake agenda garbage trash. I don't find sports to be as good as they were back the. The NFL is basically flag football now. You can't hit somebody up high you can't hit somebody download i mean you spend more time watching the officials throw flags then you do watching the players. To me the NBA is watered down they play no defense. College football and college basketball which i used to love, now you got all these teams over the last 12 years moving to these different conferences that don't even make geographical sense ending historic rivalries. This upcoming college football and basketball season there will be no Pac-12 Conference anymore. UCLA, USC, Washington in Oregon are moving to the Big Ten this year while Arizona, Arizona state are moving to the big 12 and Stanford and California are moving to the Atlantic coast conferences. Texas and Oklahoma are moving to the SEC🤦🏿‍♂️ I don't find the music nowadays enjoyable i think these rappers nowadays are trash i think the R&B the pop music nowadays are trash. I'm not even a big fast food person but even places like Wendy's McDonald's KFC and many other of those type of places are trash and way overpriced compared to how they used to be. Even the stores are trash compared to what they used to have like I miss places like Curcit City, Radio Shack, Ames Montgomery Ward's Value City Burlington Coat Factory places like Fuddruckers Ruby Tuesday's many other places that are just gone. don't even get me started on women nowadays compared to women in the 90s and in the 2000s. These females nowadays do anything for social media clout. Take a store like 7 eleven for instance. I used to love 7-Eleven used to have a wide variety of all types of stuff. Now 7-Eleven is just pure garbage way overpriced lack of variety of 7-Eleven used to have the Jolly Rancher juices the Sobe juices they used to have stuff like add corn dogs and there's a whole bunch of different type of stuff that they don't have now. I don't eat McDonald's anymore but they've been renovating lot of McDonald's buildings. Now they just look so generic they look like a dentist office some generic store. They don't have the character of the old red white and yellow buildings with the play pin outside and the Hamburglar chairs etc that used to be inside. Now it's just a stale boring generic now. Also like how in a 2000 we got to see technology evolved ipods, mp3 players, laptops, computers, consoles, what phones were in the early 2000s to cell phones now have hit their peak now and they're basically just the same thing over and over the last 6 years. We saw technology change from 2000 to around 2016 before thing got stale. So i struggle everyday with being in a society where i feel as though i don't belong here because it's not for me.

When you were mentioning playing through the same game again for The 17th time I was hoping you would bring up good hobbies that could serve as alternative away from the TV instead of just try new games bro. Idk, when I expressed these problems to my friends they always just say try new games or try indie games and then I admit to myself I've never really had a hobby outside of gaming
@Vynsent

That’s definitely an even better idea than only gaming! Personally I would search for a hobby that gets you out of the house, even for just a little bit. Whether it’s taking walks, going thrifting, or just visiting local parks. Sometimes I really need time away from my comfort space (my home) in order to feel my best!

While I can definitely see how being "stuck" in the past can be detrimental, I think that many of us who play old games do so because in some ways these games are simply more appealing. I can't speak for anyone else, but I can say that I find it quite nice to load up old games and not be bombarded with microtransactions and updates as I play them.
@Vynsent
@Vynsent Год назад
I wholeheartedly agree! Older games absolutely had much more thought and effort put into them, and it shows in how many timeless games we got from past generations. I've found myself playing ps2 much more than anything the past year, and it's been amazing 😁

Dude, very well said. I have said the same thing to some people. Sure, I like replaying old games from my past but I also like having new experiences. Like my past was actually pretty awful and sometimes going back to some old games can make me think of those awful times. Actually now that I think about it every stage of my life I associate with an awful time, maybe that's why I push people to play new games. People want to pretend that modern gaming is awful but there's tons of great experiences coming out both in the AAA and indie scene. I don't have much time or energy to game anymore so I guess about 80% of the time I choose something new but I realize most of my RU-vid content I watch is about retro games. I enjoyed another video by you but I think this one got me to press the subscribe button.

Gunna go on a little tangent here cus i have no one else to vent tk lol, but perpetual "Nostalgia Head Case" here. Nostalgia really seems to do the trick to over take me with these powerful waves of grief. The worst part is everyone you shared those special and crucial times of development with are either no longer with us on earth, or they dont seem to keen to reminisce for one reason or the other. Everybody loves to quick draw the "you're just being a boomer/old head" to invalidate you. A lot of the stuff we grew up really has been soiled by this "fast food" mentality we've been evolved to accept. Almost everyone i bump into that I havent seen in a while dont even want to talk. Its almost as if their brains are just totally starched from the constant weed smoking and instant gratification. I couldnt tell you how many times when i bump into an old friend and not even 2 mins into the conversation they ask me if i smoke, and then when i say "nah, i dont, I ALWAYS get this face "😐". They ask for my number to cut the conversation and they never get back to me lol. 😪, i really wish for a time machine to go back to the summer of 2004 to go to the flea markets, $3 movie theaters and get some food at Friendlys with my family and friends one last time.

I definitely know what you mean my friend! So much so, that it inspired me to even make this video! For a long time, I was living in nostalgia to an unhealthy degree, because I was so unhappy with the present circumstances of my life. While we may feel the best days of our lives have already came and went, I've come to find that's nothing more than a mindset or excuse we make for ourselves at times. It's always easier to succumb to whatever sadness or grief we may have, rather than overpower it and decide to make changes for the better in our lives! I can absolutely relate with what you feel because those younger years were a safe place for me at one point in time, before life got real, and you start to see how scary things can be. Luckily we have the freedom to move forward, meaning things aren't always as bad as they may seem. Just a little over a year ago I was in the worst position of my life, and had been for years before that. Luckily I was able to pick myself up, and move forward. Now I've gotta say I appreciate and love everything about life much more than I ever have before. If I can do it, so can you my friend! Don't you forget that

@@Vynsent I'm very glad you were able to get out of that mental rut. I still tend to struggle with them because, I'm sure you understand how intense they can get. Especially when you do some cleaning around the house and find your old Nintendo DSi and turn it on and find all the silly pictures you took with them and it just hits you like a spear in the heart lol. I try to just focus on what I can change to help me move forward and accept and be gratful for the good times I've had, instead of letting the nostalgia demon convert it into this grievous black hole. I really liked how you put things into perspective with this video because I kind of felt like I was going down a nostalgia hole (your Namco aesthetics video was hitting a little too close to home 🤣🤣🤣, awesome video btw) and I really appreciate the time you took to reply to me 🤝
