Your ambition is mixed with business. Art is not a ‘business’ but a practice for a possible business engagement. So yes, you need to concentrate on your skills, good or bad is not relevant, it is the journey that counts, etc etc. Van Gogh had not exhibited in his life time, not formally anyway, perhaps one painting with others, he sold a few paintings in his life time, so you are doing great for this era. Just stay focused on your work, while these channels and social media gives you a buzz now and then, it’s when you focus on yourself, that you’ll be able to study ‘you and your skills’ that will make a difference. Actions behind close doors are just as important as… but really well done for noticing that and practice asap…thanks for your honesty months ago Thomas.
You are dead right. I know a lot of artists who are chasing a market, yet seem to be losing themselves in the process. If you can find the art that comes from your heart, people will recognise that and your "market" will grow organically... or something like that.
I do believe it's important to keep an eye on the market/many different spaces out there, but yes if you're not really doing what you absolutely love I don't think you'll ever reach a truly high level.
You’re lucky to realise you were on the wrong path at a young age. I didn’t realise how shallow and naff my art was until my late thirties but better late than never I guess 😏
I only now started posting work and even tho it's what I feel and enjoy, I always end up feeling somewhat disgusted with my own work. Yet I still enjoy doing it, can't explain it

I'm still a beginner learning the fundamentals but me just doing this is a hobby I found one thing that personally helps is maybe artists you like Don't compare your beginnings to that just focus on your goals of what you want to accomplish with your art whether it be hobby or a job to do in the future
Great video, thank you for sharing. My father was actually the person who told me to do "popular art", so I would succeed. It sat in my ear probably like a piece of iron in the stomach, It felt bad. I think that a lot of people, especially if they are not artists themselves don't understand this pursuit. They might mean well, but the advice is so off. Maybe this is how it works in business (my father is a business man), but not in art.
I think it's also the question of what makes you happy. Some people can churn out meaningless paintings, sell them and be ok with that while others can't. I just think long term it's better to build something that has substance.
