I loved my grandkids too much. I spent all my income on supporting her lack of working for my 3 grandkids sake (2,6,9). She beat me up, called the police and had me thrown in jail for it. Now I’m in court. She texted me 2 days ago asking if I could help her with her car payment instead of buying fruit for my grandkids and shoes for the little one for her birthday. I didn’t respond. Took shoes to baby and dropped them off at daycare. No car payment from me. She is the only one who took advantage of me besides my last husband. For me it’s those who should love me most who take advantage.

People I know help others. So they kind. Yet their kindness turns to resentment, and the rest is history. I have witnessed good people complaining about what they do, yet still do it and never tell the person no. Yet they will be brushing the toilet with your toothbrush cause they can't express anger so they do vengeful shit behide ya back. I can't stand most good people anymore. The best way to fool anyone is pretending your helping them. I stand by a rule, domt trust people who need help or them that want help u

This was me always helping others before myself , I was treated horribly after helping so many people especially my family . A couple years ago I could not do it anymore, I fell apart. No one was there for me, I was view worthless; I didn’t matter, to anyone! That was a hard pill to swallow,! After clawing my way back, I began cutting people out of my life, even my own family! I feel much better, I miss them , still love them . I will not tolerate this behavior from anyone anymore Done!

Same here but, I was advised early on about sympathy. It's nice to be able to help but, the rules I leaned to apply are: 1) Help them to their feet and walk with them a little while. 2) Do not carry them or do things they can do for themselves. Otherwise, you weaken yourself and stop them from becoming strong.

I was brought up in the 50s, a strict catholic I was told to be humble and put others before yourself. I have practised this my whole life and paid for it on many occasions. I actually saw the light eventually and stopped but felt guilty about putting myself and my needs first mostly due to ill health. Your video has helped me enormously, healed my guilt and explained everything so clearly. Thank you.

Same here. It was only well into my adulthood when I first read David Seabury's book on being selfish which saved my life. Now I only act out of self interest. Hi, my mother went to a catholic school and on her death bed the biggest fear she had was that she was going to hell after the nuns that treated her very badly and told her she was an evil little sinner and going to hell. She has faith in God yet at the age of 74 all those years later she still carried that burden. My mum passed away in 2013 and now exactly 10 years after the fact and my sister kicking me to the curb while at the time i was waiting for an operation on my spine which helped me not and i know have cervical spondylosis with bad nerve damage in my lower and upper spine my sister, after rejecting me for 10 years now gets in touch to tell me she has only months to live at most through cancer and i just can't cope with getting involved after 10 years of no contact she now expects me to simply forget that she treated me so cruel. Even to the point that at our sweet mothers funeral my older sister arranged for my ex wife of years to jump into the family hearse just as we were getting into the car which was more than disrespectful considering the fact that my ex wife and me do not speak at all. I have very bad health myself and this is just to much for me. So after telling her how i felt which she freaked out about i have told her i simply cannot involve myself again in any way. Although this only further breaks my already very well trodden on heart. And i make no claim to be totally correct but i am very honest to a fault about how i feel. I wish you all the best.

Stumbled across this video and your comments here. I attend Mass in a catholic catherdal every Sunday. And serve as an acolyte, Taught to love thy neighbour. The amount of people that I have come to know in the congregation that are condescending is unbelievable. You go to church for worship and to find peace, but no.. Sacristan think they are above everyone else. You think you can meet kind loving people there? They compare who has more wealth. Even when you know you've work hard for what you have, they have to one up you to make themselves feel better. Love thy neighbour? Lord tell me how? I feel more at peace when I'm far away from these negative people. Help others? Lord you help me first.

Sometimes we give to others because we want people to like us, it works great but it isn’t real. I myself consider all interactions as “transactional”. In other words there’s something in it for both sides. Otherwise it’s not sustainable. I don’t do business deals without a knowledge that it’s good for the other party. With all that being said, I believe as you reach a certain level of prosperity, you have no option but to give back to those who have fallen on hard times. We should be humble and realize how lucky we really are.

I was always the kind of person that would do just about anything to help anyone, but when I hit without question my darkest hour and needed someone to be there for me do you know how many were? An incredible, jaw dropping zero. Kindness and generosity are wonderful traits, but there's a time to look out for other people and a time to look out for yourself.

Don't change, you just need to find the people that is going to stay by your side when you are down, those are the true ones. Also you need to evaluate who should have your kindness, never give more than you should to a person you just met. In the end you don't need to change who you really are, you just have to change the way you approach life and the ones that start to take more than they should are to be set on boundaries

well, then you must be aware of being too egoistic leads you to being a twat that shits on other people doing nothing for others. that in turn leads to being alone ˋcos nobody will do anything for you in return. you must be aware in life that not everyone you do something good to is able to give you something back, but the likelyhood of receiving something is much bigger if you help others. but as you like, you can go that path down of being most efficient with your feelings towards others. nothing for a community or living in social environment. a life worth living? rather not, i guess.

I've always given what I was able to give, and never expected anything in return. The key is being 'able'. If I don't have the time/ money/energy to help someone, then I am not 'able' to do so. If I do have those things, then I am 'able', and I can and will help. I expect nothing in return, other than respect. There are however many people who are always looking for others to give them everything they want, and to do everything they they want. I now avoid these people, wherever possible. I also pull back from those who ask directly and specifically for help. I dont immediately say yes or no, I may or may not help them, depending on whether I am actually 'able' or not, but I think about it first, and I always ensure that it does not, in any way, become habitual. I learned that lesson when I was a young mum, and regularly took all the children in my cul de sac to school and then collected them and brought them home afterwards. I didn't mind the walk, and it saved them having to do it. One afternoon, I broke my ankle falling down the stairs, and was obviously unable to collect them. I was also unable to collect my own children, so telephoned each family, whose children I was expected to collect, explaining the situation, and asking them, in turn, if they could possibly bring my children back to my house for me. I would arrange for someone to be there to take care of them. There were 7 families involved and not one would agree to bring my children home. 2 were actually angry that they would now have to collect their own children, one complained that I had ruined their plans, they had hoped I would babysit for them after school so that they could go shopping, 3 suddenly had other arrangements after school, so they would 'not be coming back', and the last one said she'd find someone else to bring her children home, but she couldn't do anything about collecting mine. My last telephone call was to the school. They arranged to keep them for an hour after school so that a teacher could bring them back after the staff meeting. I never did a school run for anyone ever again.

I have wrestled with this all my life There are ‘givers’ and there are ‘takers’. We givers must recognize takers in the early stages of a relationship In my late 70’s i look back on how my kindness has backfired Time and again, I have been taken advantage of and used BUT I now believe God has a huge computer at his work station. It is called Karma and it works every time. I have had some incredible events where my life was in jeopardy but a force from above led me to safety. Nothing happens by coincidence. Had it not been for that incredible force, I would have died years ago. So…fellow givers, smile. God is keeping score for you. But.. remember: when you give, do not expect the favour to be returned. Just enjoy the act of giving The Bible says “we reap what we sow”. Truer words were never spoken. Just smile, and be patient. Wait for the harvest. It will come in one form or another.

My mistake when it came to being overly kind was to not have established my personal boundaries. I was initially kind because I was taught that it was good to be helpful and people would like me. I was was agreeable because I would try to avoid any potential conflict. Unfortunately, allowing myself taken advantage of has only left me with frustration and anger. As such I'm angry with myself as well as those people perceived my kindness as a form of weakness to be exploited. I was and am a fool.

I so relate to you. I just came to this realization about myself. I give to help others even if I feel I am being used. But just not to disappoint or cause conflict. I give in. I also realized showing too much empathy, people will always take advantage of me because “I’ll understand.” Ive been beating myself up lately realizing how foolish I am. I matter too but back then, I didnt matter to myself and thats the worse we could do to ourselves. Put others before our needs and desires. But I also realized, those that used me and took advantage of my kindness. Over the years, they are not too well. Its a learning process and we’re getting through it. I wish you all the best ❤

My sister nearly had a nervous breakdown at work because she was a people-pleaser and could not say No when asked to do more and more work just to make somebody else look good. Fortunately, she WAS compensated with bonuses due to her hard work for others. But, it was really too much for her. She earned enough; she didn't need the extra money. She just could not say No to anybody. I, on the other hand, knew instinctively when I was about to be set up either by Management or a co-worker. I figured out ahead of time how to be "unavailable" for favors. This freed me to go home when I was supposed to get off work; and, to not take on extra crushing work for people that I knew would never reciprocate. I lived in peace; I still do. It has taken many years to realize that I was failing myself by giving way too much. Resentment and anger set in after becoming depleted and understanding that reciprocity wasn’t coming in each of many situations, including those with family members. I finally get that my priority is to first take care of myself and only give when and if it feels good and doesn’t keep me hooked into the other persons needs. Along with this, keep it simple and don’t go overboard when giving. Allow the person who is receiving to accomplish for themselves the bulk of what they need. Don’t rescue.

I became very ill. Nearly died. Kept giving after that as well. Someone nearly took my life. This pattern continued. Until i was ~ where i am today. Yesterday i was at the pawn shop. I saw an older man that stood next to his bicycle with something far too heavy to balance and carry. I realized he couldnt come that far, and i had s few moments to burn. I asked if i could give him a ride. He gratefully accepted. In the end, only like 1 mile away. He offered me 5 dollars. I said no thats fine, but he insisted...and truthfully....i needed that 5 dollars. Strangers are often the best way of interacting in short, acts of kindness. Not long standing contracts or money or love with people you are completely enmeshed with. Ive been hearing that repeated, not having expectations. I find that very hard. But as i let go of having them....i let go of people who have nothing to give me. (When its my turn in need.)

Even though it isn't the point of being kind, you just might receive help from that person when you really need it most. You never know. I allowed bad instances to change who i was for awhile, but i went back to being nice and kind because i refuse to allow anyone to change who i am as a person. If i get screwed, oh well, its part of life and it happens. Maybe just don't help that person anymore. But again, you will also be helping people who TRULY appreciate it.

I was brought up a catholic and taught to put other people first before yourself and be kind, caring and loyal. I have put other people needs before my own in the past and i've stood by people but some have taken advantage of my kindness and loyalty, they haven't appreciated me and they drained all my energy and they were never there for me, so I ended the friendship. Now I put myself first and set boundaries. Your video was very helpful. If your too kind, a lot of people will just use you as a doormat!

Being able to say “No” to those I know don’t appreciate my help and no intention of paying me back. Am looking forward to being in my house alone and growing. The best thing I can do is pray for the people and that they change and learn like I’ve had to do.

Putting yourself first can be a good thing , unless it becomes narcissistic . If one has a spouce or small children , well that's a responsibility that one should put their needs ahead of one's own . There's a meaning in life that's bigger than You , Me or Anyone ! Everyone on a different journey . One doesn't want to put themselves 1st too the point of loosing empathy or compassion for other humans . A person should want to make the world a better place & help other people better themselves . A person should also be brutally honest with themselves & not be 1 of those people who take advantage of kind people . I meet people everyday I could manipulate & use , because of their kindness . One must refrain from such things, because it's not the right thing to do ! Always keep your moral compass, good luck to you on your journey!

Totally agree, you can actually be too nice ! It’s not healthy or appreciated. I’ve learnt the hard way, but it’s actually a really good life lesson. I need to have boundaries, assess who the person is first, before doing something for them, I need to check whether it clash with what is best for me now. I now don’t expect anything from anyone, so I’m not upset or angry by them not acting in a certain way , I don’t do this in a negative way, but it takes a massive amount of pressure off me, because I have no expectations in the first place. It’s taken time to learn to be like this, but I feel so much better! People are people and we are who we are and we need to assess the people before we give too freely imo. 😃

One big revelation for me was one can learn this behavior and become by process given awayand at a deficit, then saddened by the complexity of the loss of self. If you are "given", to one who is toxic they will likely throw you away like a useless piece of garbage, or worse attack you because you stopped giving. There are not words to express the destruction this can bring into your life. You feel furious, betrayed and angry at them and yourself. Stay Stoic, crazy is out there! It often looks like something normal, or just confusing. See Red Flags, don't make excuses for another's toxic behavior! Recognize and remember you are the captain of your own ship (life). Keep your ship safe, your life is your responsibility. Other's lives, is their responsibility. You cannot fix nor help, someone else who is insecure. It is that simple, you can try and in the process be blamed for their insecurity. Just don't "go there", in the first place. Save yourself alot of pain and suffering set up good boundaries and be prepared to defend those good boundaries. Toxic people seem to see boundaries as opportunities to re-enter!!! Stay strong, stay away.

As I have grown older & wiser I’ve learnt to say no many many times & to start thinking of myself. My son who is 28yrs old took after me & I keep on saying don’t be too kind & learn to say no but it’s in his character. Hopefully as he grows older wisdom will be the answer. I don’t want people to take advantage of him like people did with me. Now that I have lesser friends & are able to say no I’m much happier & tranquil living more of a peaceful life. 🙏🏼

I think the problem isn't excessive kindness, it's unbalanced kindness - finding the balance between being kind to yourself and to others is probably the closest to true kindness you can get, because merely giving your energy indiscriminately to dependent types is actually enabling their unhealthy behaviour and thus not actually kind at all - i reckon true kindness is acting for the highest good of all involved, including yourself.. don't think one can ever be "too" kind, only misguided as to what is truly kind, maybe

I was Miss goodie two shoes and yes what you say is true. I found myself being emotionally abused and materially used. I have learned to set boundaries and if i need advice on how I should view a problem others come to me with I have a wonderful husband to talk to. We discuss the issues and he gives me sound advice which I take. I find myself feeling lighter as if an unnecessary burden is lifted off my shoulders. But if I do find myself bound to help someone I like to do it anonymously. When I help them I take the attitude that I dont expect praise for my actions from anyone except Almighty God/Allah. I have also learned that even if my values are good I must not expect that others have the same values as myself. I accept that although I am not the greatest human being who has ever lived and i have so much in common with my species I am still a unique individual and I am personally responsible for the improvement of my own character and values. Good values make you more valuable in the best possible way. Not materially but in every good way imaginable. When troubles come your way you can quietly handle them quickly and effectively.
