RE: Resist not evil. I identify myself as a Christian Mystic. My understanding of this passage has been Christ's anticipation of C.G. Jung's observation that 'what we resist persists.' Mother Therese is quoted as saying she would not join a march against war, but would gladly participate in a march for peace. In a spiritual sense 'for' is always a stronger position than 'against.' The mind focused on what it worships as virtuous automatically precludes its opposition.

Emmet Fox, an Irishman with whom James may be familiar, explains Jesus' statement "Resist not evil." It's the metaphysics and psychology of one's thoughts; it's not about aggression, about war. Fox says, "Antagonize any situation and you give it power against yourself; offer mental nonresistance, and it crumbles away in front of you."
As a fellow lawyer and lapsed Catholic (who happens to also have a very Irish name ), I’ve long found that Neibuhr was on to something in arguing that an individual within society is often in a situation where he can only minimize evil rather than avoid it entirely. With that in mind, James and Jeff’s discussion of Jesus’ rejection of the resistance of evil was thought provoking to say the least. Jung’s discussion of evil in the context of Christ as the symbol of the Self in Chapter V of Aion immediately came to mind as insightful on the subject. Jung discusses “with what emphasis the reality of evil was denied by the Church Fathers.” The Church had such notions as, “Nothing evil was created by God; we ourselves have produced all wickedness.” Along these lines, Jung strongly criticizes the Catholic doctrine of privatio boni, the concept that evil is merely the lack or privation of good (“One could hardly call the things that have happened, and still happen, in the concentration camps of the dictator states an ‘accidental lack of perfection’ it would sound like mockery.”) In denying the reality of evil, I suspect that the Church’s institutional leanings interfered with any proper grappling of the esoteric and mystical underpinnings of Jesus’s statement regarding the resistance of evil. This tension is along the lines of that discussed in James’s discussion with Jeff on the Mystical Path from April 3, 2020. According to Jung, in complete contrast to the Church, the Gnostics “tackled the problem of evil on a broader basis than the Church Fathers. For instance, one of the things they taught was that Christ “cast off his shadow from himself.’” Further, Jung notes that a collection of Gnostic-Christian writings from about AD 150, describe “good and evil as the right and left hand of God, and views the whole of creation in terms of syzygies, or pairs of opposites.” (This accord’s with Jeff’s reference to the spinning Yin Yang in this talk). Is it counterproductive to spite God’s left hand for the right? To the extent God as an analogue of the Self is a unity of opposites, including Good and Evil, so long as the reality of evil is fully recognized and accepted, isn’t it pointless to resist evil insofar as it precludes unity? Or to put it another way, is Jesus’ suggestion that we refrain from resisting from evil more of an esoteric notion about acknowledging and integrating it within ourselves in a quest toward the integration of Self or the dual aspects of reality? An entire talk can be set aside to discuss this issue, and I look forward to viewing it.

Agree. Difficult to "do" but once mastered you are free. As resistance is part of what "evil" is. It's a reflection of it in my ego that judges what is good or bad. Once there is no judgement there is no resistance and therefore no "evil". Super difficult stuff to think about. I would say impossible to get it fully by logic. One needs to feel it through and practise.
I visited a Round Tower in Ireland recently, just south of Galway. Thomas Sheridan is right, these were in no way built by Christian monks. They are enormous megalithic stone structures, with huge granite stones precisely carved in the round. This is the work of advanced technology. Plus... they have no entrance doors, so what were they even for? Makes me think of obelisks and other stone resonance structures... Great interview btw! When Jesus said, resist not evil, I think we begin to fall into his hidden teachings about universal consciousness. This is as opposed to the traditional Catholic view, which is more duality consciousness. If you look at the new Nat Geo magazine, it outlines how secret societies were behind the expansion of early Christianity. For a broader perspective of what Jesus really meant, I think it is important to look outside of Catholicism and into the Ethiopian sects as well as Gnosticism. They have more consistently preserved the knowledge over the last 2000 compared to Catholics, in my opinion. The Nag Hammadi library calls into question the philosophy back then as well.
I just stumbled upon James Tunney last week and am impressed. Magic and Sorcery is neutral, depending on the intention and charge put into it. Dark Sorcery is that which is about controlling and manipulating others, while conventional Magic is focused on one's own growth and self-development, as well as healing others. As they did with Paganism, the System (centralism of the State and hierarchy is closely bound with monotheism) incorporated some of its ideas while suppressing and eradicating it because they knew of its power. But as an American Pagan who tries to reconstruct as much as possible the indigenous traditions of his South German, Flemish and Spanish ancestors, I can say that, like Tunney says about the Irish, Paganism has survived in our various folk traditions and folklore, especially in regions (like mine too) that were Catholic....I like how Tunney mentions Thomas Sheridan, whose own insights into the Occult and in general have inspired my own in many ways. The old Deities and Archetypes of Ireland are certainly returning...Finally, Tunney is completely right about the importance of consent to the elites. They obviously want to impose their agenda but the reason they engage in so much propaganda is to influence people's thinking so deeply that they freely give their consent. These Dark Occultists know the power of harnessing another person's energy if that person is not coerced. This makes them even more insidious and sinister, because unlike the tyrants of the past, they want to completely control the thoughts and alter the minds and even DNA of people. This also ties into their Transhumanism, the current carrot-and-stick methods they're using to get people to be jabbed, and the Revelation of the Method - they will "sacrifice" some of their own in scandals so as to not sacrifice the broader agenda, and it works like a literal charm each time....The ultimate way is not to "fight" them (Philip K. Dick and Krishnamurti made alot of great observations about revolting against society and the Empire which are prescient here), but simply think for ourselves, going on our own mystical Hero's Journey(s), and setting up the parallel society.
Could "Resist not Evil" also mean: Don't support it, don't bring attention to it, don't try to kill it...because in doing so you become as it is, creating even more division and violence. I am drawing on an interpretation by René Girard, "Things Hidden Since the Foundation of the World", "Violence and the Sacred". Also a supporting book by Gil Bailie, "Violence Unveiled". I could comment further on this topic, but I don't want to make anyone's eyes bleed. I am merciful (usually).

Such a lovely guest, I could listen all day. I think “do not resist” means to acknowledge but have no response. Turning your back on. When we encounter one another we make judgements, which causes behavioral changes in the microsecond. Training myself to be supportive or understanding of the other person, which is my true intention here, makes the best sense. Seeing how I have handled people and situations in my past is very humbling, looking at others with my own mistakes in mind helps with the interactions. I have to say though, sometimes saying nothing has the best result. Gives the other person time to reflect. Do they really believe what they are saying? Escalation, competition, is less likely, & the ego falls back on itself. Such a beautiful mysterious life! Nature is the greatest teacher, that’s why religion makes it evil, yet takes on (maybe modifies) and accepts the pagan rituals and sites as their own as the rituals are powerful. In the beginning of this year I got attacked in my sleep by some spirits. They would trap me in a loop of dreams where I or somebody I know would be killed and they showed me horrible sounds and visions. But at times I would be protected by spirits that seemed to be my ancestors. They would tell me wisdom that left rays of light in my memory but no words that I can remember, as if I was not allowed to remember. I still don’t know what to think of my experiences. Just wanted to share that.

Splendid exchange of ideas and concepts between two sages! On 'resisting evil'... I think the word 'resist' has an archaic interpretation. And I suspect there is another quote to the effect of advocating action . 'Resisting evil' may also be a warning that eradicating evil, as a principal, is impossible as it is an expression of the duality of good and evil;however, to stand up for good against an evil act or evil person was encouraged to right wrongs.
Happily making my way through the “Tunney Interview Collection” on this wonderful NTA channel. Tunney is an exemplary traveler in many realms of discipline, with a seemingly effortless ability to take in and integrate from all he encounters. Here, I would like to add an additional consideration to ones offered by Mishlove and Tunney on the prompt regarding the words of Jesus, “resist not evil.” It’s been often been suggested that Jesus may have traveled in the far East, and learned some of its wisdom. The passage from Matthew 5:38-39 reads: “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you not to resist an evil person. If someone slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also…” The words strikingly suggest nothing less than addressing the issue of karma. While the eye and tooth examples illustrate a more obvious cause and effect with the equality of a boomerang, Jesus expands the sense of karmic penance by suggesting that if you have a comeuppance, bear it fully, even offering the other cheek to make your forebearance complete so there is no karmic remainder. And so it may even be that while some persons are unquestionably evil, their action against someone can yet serve in exhausting a karmic debt for that person.
Ultimately, all spiritual pursuits are, in the beginning. At a certain point though, one realizes that they are not alone and, then they understand their efforts and acheivements, benefit all others as well.

Resist not Evil: I wonder what the Aramaic was for that phrase. I'm trained in martial arts, so this idea is clear to me. Energy dynamics: whatever you engage in battle gets into you, gets stuck to you. To armor muscles is to block healthful qi flow. Resistance is a blockage. I believe that the Catholic Jesus is Horus, and more specifically he represents people who had skills in energy healing. Talk about it all you want Wordsmith, the sense of these things is demonstrated in the feeling sense, energy is real. Muscular armor pulls all sides of all human conflicts into the energy of resistance. Argument? A shock of energy well aimed brings silence to your talk. Resist not Evil. Like Aikido.
I was listening intently till about 37:20 where James described not only the dream but also the analysis ie; confronting a "fork in the road" situation and making a particularly significant decision from a deeper position (yin) than is usually experienced in daily (yang) life. Like I could say to myself all "day" long "I will do it..." and never quite feel like it makes a difference but on the other hand when you are "in" the situation (dream/reality...) you experience an "earlier" part of the self where tweaks actually work. Another great Tunney/Mishlove adventure...
My understanding at this moment about Matthew 5:39 is the notion that "evil" is part of the chaotic balance of reality. In the taoist language, just experience wuwei will allow us to just be the observer of the ego and not the ego that wants to avoid evil/pain/chaos
It simply means, “Don’t hate it.” Do not be angry, judge, or resent it. Anger, resentment, or judgment are what allow evil to rule over you. Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book says resentments are the dubious luxury of the non-alcoholic.
Perhaps by accepting -- and not resisting -- we give ourselves maximum energy / clarity / efficiency to affect change. Resistance stops the flow of energy -- and the thing we are trying to resist tends to receive our undivided attention....
I think resist not evil is meant internally within yourself. And by resisting it you may empower it , ala aversion is a form of attachment. It does not mean indulge in evil and evil acts. I think it means continue standing in the light at peace undistracted by 'evil' , 'darkness' et al .
In Matthew, the context of the "Resist not evil" is that Jesus wants you to turn the other cheek, love your enemies, etc... because God makes the rain fall and the sun rise on all of creation, evil and good. If you only love the good, then have not achieved much. If you love both the good and the evil, you have transcended elementary judgementalism to be more perfect, like God, like Jesus. This is consistent with Jesus message of compassion and forgiveness of sin. To say "resist evil" puts man in God's place as judge and contradicts God's new covenant with mankind to forgive both the righteous and the sinner. However, the examples Jesus gives; a slap on the cheek, a stolen tunic, a forced march with soldiers.....dont address the deep evils of genocide, murder, war, etc.... The example the guest gave about Jesus scolding disciples that mocked his indulgence in self care by oils and massage is a perfect counterpoint. Jesus argues that taking care of oneself is supporting the sanctity of life. So, Jesus's message was never meant to be black or white. Both things are true. Love your enemy AND take action to preserve the sanctity of life. It's up to us to decide when to do which.
Can NTA please cover more about Hindu cosmology. The upper realms and lower realms? What are the laws of each realm? How to raise ones vibration to access lower and upper realms? What are the beings in these other realms like? Which realm are we in? Who decides our placement in the current realm? I am not sure if enough has been covered by NTA on this vast subject. The only way I see myself learning is through this channel, there is no way I will be picking up a book to understand Hindu cosmology (at least in this lifetime)

If you look at the old animation "The Sword in the Stone" , Merlin the wizard battles against an evil witch, resonating with your notion of dark witchs fighting healer types. Merlin ends up defeating the dark witch in a shape-shifting duel by taking the form of a virus, which is interesting given the status our current global viral infection. Perhaps 'to resist not' is not the same as 'passivity'. One can have action that comes from a place of resistance, which is coming from the mind and opposition. And one can act from a place of presence, a oneness with life.

The PK man, a fantastic read I find, seems to be a character out of a picaresque novel: He is a warrior, a healer, has no place in society, an alcohol problem, a nomad, talks to people in the sky, does rain and thunder dances, perhaps a swindler and a criminal at least if his claims to all those terrible deeds were true. If they were true he was killing innoncent people left and right for profit or just by accident f.e. at Mt. Saint Helens or a commercial plane in New York. One can find pictures of a Priest giving last rites to the deceased victimes of the plan crash on the ground. In comparison Rasputin would have been a choir boy. Resist not evil. I feel it is similar to how Islam means submission. I don’t think it means to never stop evil actions, but to realize that you can’t stop most evil and to focus on acceptance instead of trying to change the world by force. Also makes me think of Pink Floyd. You think you can tell heaven from hell?

As much as I love Jorjani, his recent public declaration of Satanism has made me re-evaluate a lot of what he's said, and I've noticed a ton of hints to Satanism in his talks, to the point that "Promethean" and "Mithras" seem to be just code words for "Satanic" and "Satan". I wish I could see Tunney speak with him on this subject, since Satanism seems well beneath Jorjani.
