Episode 7 - Understanding the Dark Night of St. John of the Cross, pt. 1
_____
Fr. Gallagher helps us to understand the Dark Night as described by St. John of the Cross and how it differs from the experience of Spiritual Desolation. He also addresses the Dark Night metaphor and how it is used to describe some spiritual experiences that are not necessarily the same in meaning as that set forth by St. John of the Cross and how that can be confusing for some.
_____
From Setting the Captives Free: Personal Reflections on Ignatian Discernment of Spirits
The dark night, therefore, is an experience of infused contemplative prayer felt as painful because it is purifying; it prepares the person for greater union with God through higher states of infused contemplation. The difference between this purifying experience of prayer and the discouraging lies of spiritual desolation is evident.6 The first is a gift of God; the second is a trap of the enemy. By accepting the first, we grow; by rejecting the second, we grow.

So glad I found this. Besides yourself, I only found Bishop Barron on this topic (dark night). I knew I could depend on a well-studied and understandable explanation from you Fr. Unfortunately, the New Agers have taken DNOS as their own, with all kinds of wonky definitions of it!! God bless u greatly Father. TY!

Prayer in Times of Discouragement “O God, my mind whirls around in confusion and my soul seems destitute of all consolation. It is as if all the world and all my life were telescoped into one moment and I carry the burden of it all. I cannot see any future except tomorrow being another today. “All my yesterdays crowd around me, some accusing and some regret filled. It is like a prison with a thousand voices shouting for attention. “Divine Jailor, You have the key to release my soul from the prison of discouragement. Unlock the doors and let me roam freely into the regions of Your love. Deliver me from the tyranny of my own will. “Surely You take no pleasure in my soul disquieted within me, for then I am wrapped in myself: Do I hear You whisper, “Unlock the door for the key is within. I wait ready to enter and comfort you.” Jesus, I trust in you! Mother Angelica

So the Dark Night is not a punishment?
@1406Pictures

No, it's not Siobhan. The Dark Night (not desolation) is a purging from the senses and desires in order to reach detachment from the former self. You'll then be completely available to God. It's painful, very painful but rewarding x

@@1406Pictures that’s a very cool story! But why the human mind is so flawed? Endless chatter always running on full throttle, the brain in the other side registers all the nonsense then the mind tells you to forget it all. Who would create something so flawed like human brain?

@@bitkurd life is not a silly joke. Jesus Christ died for me and you. Life is difficult and no one will escape suffering. The Bible says "the Righteous have many trials". Better to suffer well. God Bless

I think it might be consequence of sin? But with Mother Theresa , she gave everything she had to others. I think one gets physically and spiritually depleted doing that. In the same way social workers get depleted from giving everything from their heart and soul to others. Then we wonder if it's any use because no one else cares, and because we get criticized.
