Ripping off the Beatles or Stevie Wonder is one thing. No one really gets hurt. But repeatedly ripping off people who helped you getting started? That takes a special kind of bastard. Classic case of biting the hand that feeds.
@@exmagnolia then taking the Real people off all guest lists and supporting slots where they could have got more exposure and earnt a good few quid , he’s an arrogant prick doing that .
Once had an Oasis picture book when I was a kid in the 90's; one quote from NG that sticks out was - "You pick up your guitar, rip a few people's tunes off, swap them round a bit, get your brother in the band, punch his head in every now and then and it sells." There you go...
Man, I always felt that Columbia was a total different kettle of fish from the other songs on Def-Maybe and now I know why. Especially listening to the Real People. Its totally their 1991 album vibe.
The more i read/hear about Liam,i like him more. The more i read/hear about noel,i like him less.I can’t remember the last time i heard something good about him tnh
I used to think this too but then I learned about what a great husband and dad Noel has been, in sharp contrast to Liam who pretty shamelessly neglects his kids and publicly cheated on wives 1 and 2
I was a fan of Oasis back in the day, but seriously, I don't see why Noel can't cough up a few grand and the writing credits, after all, he's loaded, and probably will be for the rest of his life.
Noel admitted he steals riffs and segments of other people’s music in his songs it isn’t a secret. But Columbia and the real people is kinda shady. And the whole band bullied tony I felt really bad for him.
Met the real people in a pub in liverpool good few yrs bk..... were very freindly & bought them a pint!! Hadnt a lot to say about Noel & knew straight away they had no time for him!! But they did talk about liam & said he was sound
You can't be saying he could be a nice guy who had some sort of shitty spell. Noel Gallagher's been at it his entire life. Stealing songs from the people who were intrinsic to his bands everthing is not a one off scumbag move. He even stitched them up not allowing them the comparible pittance they were offered. Gallagher burgled houses you know, and talks off like it's nothing, I'm from the same sort of background, I didn't burgle my neighbours. The main reason he faded so quickly from the heights he was at is because having stolen so much of his music there was little chance he could keep doing it..... Liam got the bad press but it was his bellend brother who was the wrongun.
Great video man. The first time I heard Don’t Go Away and The real people’s song that is identical, i was mind blown. Also I never knew that Liam made the chorus for Columbia, it would’ve been cool to hear what Liam could’ve made had Noel given him a chance to do it early on.
I agree- I can’t tell you the way I feel because the way I feel is oh so new to me - is my favorite line in that song. Liam really is a good writer but constant gaslighting by his brother for decades makes him believe he’s not. Bold is an epic song. So vulnerable and real. Gaslighting is what abusive husbands do to wives, Noel did it to his brother. I think Liam understood this but decided to put up with it as a trade off for Noel doing all the business end of stuff. But every now and again Noel controlling Liam like the guest list situation would finally set Liam off. I mean imagine putting your friends on the guest list only to find out Noel took them off. That’s like dictator behavior over everyone in the band. Sociopath.
@@belleh.2955 Liam wrote the chorus for DLBIA the other band members helped produce the sound I think that Oasis was 5 people and it’s never about one person but Noel constantly makes out “he” did it all. Noel got extremely rich the rest have to work.
Yes I’m aware LIAM wrote the chorus because that info is in this video that we are commenting on and my comment is to a response about Liam writing that line. I’ve acknowledged that. Not sure why your response to me is telling me something I’m already acknowledging and also responding to in the original comment. Mercury retrograde miscommunication perhaps. But I agree w you about NG getting rich while the rest have to work. That’s a basic problem with music royalties in general. Even Nirvana faced this same problem. Music agreements are shite and need to be revised.
@@belleh.2955 I don't think so, Beady Eye songs, Liam's ex band were utter shite to be frank. His voice and style of annunciation will always be legendary doe
The guy is an asshole. To do this to anyone is beyond understanding. Stealing someone’s else’s art and passing it off as your own, and consuming the wealth of it without conscience is sociopathic. Should be sitting in jail. Instead he still worshipped.
Fascinating.. Like others I’m a huge fan and wasn’t aware of this… great job again. Despite Noel being my all time hero, I’ve always been aware he has a dark side and he’s had his moments like this.. (Also always hated the unnecessary verbal put down against an unwell Michael Hutchence at 96 Brits)
Noel Gallagher is one of the most sued artists of all time. There are lots of compilation's of songs and ideas he's copied/stolen on RU-vid. they're well worth checking out.
He has such a great sense of humour he could’ve been a famous comedian, and he is a great songwriter on top of that. But he has lost the plot a good number of times. The hutchence thing took me back too He has lifted ideas and melodies. But that’s what makes oasis so special. Nothing good is original anyways and he knows that. Oasis is special cause they had personality and it’s all that will ever matter Shoplifters of the world unite and take over
@@markythompson Noels a magpie everyone knows that. To say he is one the most sued artists is wrong cause it isn’t true. Everyone be doing what he does if it was that easy. These lads the real people helped them at the start. It’s like messi dad probaly thought him how to kick a ball. Messi did the rest. Oasis had Liam a phenomenal front man and for the first 3 albums singer too
Never heard of The Real People and just started listening to them -- wow! Real shame these guys never broke in the same way as Oasis. Even a band like James broke bigger than these guys.
To be honest I think that Noel always had this hunger of becoming a rockstar no matter what, and without that oasis would've never reached that level of fame and success. I think he was an incredible strategist. He knew that it was not going to be easy, but he also knew how to play his cards and did it great (althought that consisted on wearing masks and blend in with all kind of people , use'em and get away with it). I think that somehow , all that he did was necesary and perfect , and if you think it wasn't , Oasis music is the result of that and it speaks for itself
Your comment implies (in fact, blatantly states) that if you are hungry for success and you indeed find that success, that the ends justifies the means and all criticism is invalid. To qualify that with "the music speaks for itself" is not only an empty sentiment, it ignores the many MANY instances where Noel plagiarized other artists to find that success. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QO5X2_2_7PA.html It's one thing for the opening riff for C&A to sound a bit like T Rex, for the piano on DLBIA to sound very similar to Imagine, for Columbia to have the same chord progression as a techno number and WTSMG to have "tomorrow never knows" in its lyrics (which even those combined is kind of embarrassing) but to patently steal from The Real People and Stevie Wonder and excuse that as "success by any means necessary" tells me that your love of Oasis' music, which I like as well, has you shutting your eyes and ears to anything unethical. If every song was as original and iconic as Live Forever, Bring It On Down, Wonderwall and Champagne Supernova, they'd probably be the best band of the nineties. But there's too much that's questionable and blatantly stolen to ignore.
I am almost where your are, but taking a sole writing credit for a song he hardly even contributed to is as close to criminal. I wonder if they played Columbia live, much?
i mean even if we are to accept the notion that being ruthless in pursuit of social/financial success at the expense of personal relationships is acceptable, thats still bollocks, frankly. we're talking about co-writing credits for THREE songs, none of which was a hit single or even particularly famous, and one of which was a fucking b-side. its not a big deal. i assume the case is that unlike just stealing a famous riff or a melody here and there and adapting them for your own song without formally crediting the source, which is fine, the real people stuff was just blatantly noel pretending something someone else had done was completely his, and his obsessively not acknowledging the real people is just guilt about that (which, again, is just absurd considering if you asked 100 people in the street to name ten noel gallagher songs off the top of their head youd be lucky to get one person naming columbia, rockin chair or dont go away).
They lost a lot of their punky sound when Tony was sacked. I preferred him on drums. I’ve read his book and it’s great. He didn’t trash Noel or anything like that. Which he could quite easily have done. Shows what a good bloke he is. The truth is a very good and apt title for his book as well.
Shows what a shithouse he is more like. He allowed the last member to join to kick him out of his own band, rolled over and accepted it without even attempting to stand up for himself. Without Noel, Tony McCarrol would never be heard of and would never have played on an iconic album like 'Definitely Maybe'. Is Noel supposed to apologise to Tony for his inability to hold a steady beat as a drummer and lack creativity and timing? If he was a credible talented drummer he wouldn't have been sacked in the first place.
Judging by stories like "Rolexes to the band, Rolls-Royce to Noel" it really feels like McGee has convinced Noel that he is Oasis by himself, even though they already had the sound - which they've lost when the original members left. Liam's contribution is also utterly underrated. Noel has created this image that he's a genius songwriter, but without his brother's delivery I don't think any of his songs would have been noticed. In the meantime whatever Liam sings, the tune sounds like Oasis, whether it's written by Death in Vegas or even Bob Marley. I'm also certain that Liam could have become a great songwriter with some encouragement in the early 90s and the band could have become a relatively successful indie band. On the other hand, I don't see Noel's career ever taking off without the sound, attitude and voice of Oasis.
Noel freely admits in recent interviews that he would never have got anywhere without Liam. High flying birds music is superior to Oasis in my opinion. No Liam there.
I don't really think Noel after Oasis ever pursued thesame style as Oasis. Just listen to His High flying birds sound. It's completely different than the iconic Liam style. Maybe just maybe he is just doing what he likes for his own music.
Like what the Real People said, Liam was already a Star , everywhere they went people couldn’t take there eyes off him, then his voice was amazing, never has a single man got every teenager or lad in there 20s in the country to get there hair & clothes to imitate his image , it was like what James Dean did to affect the male youth of America in the 50s, every lad wanted to be Liam not Noel .
im so glad to hear people are talking about this again, I've been good mates with Tony and Chris for many many years, was a member of the band for a few years and spent a good few years in there studio with them helping them record a great many records with so many different artists and all that time "that cheque was on the wall the whole time". they are without a doubt the most prolific and melodically wonderful songwriters, ive heard those Reels many many times its so overwhelmingly obvious, and to be fair when the first oasis record came we all knew those songs were Realies songs its so obvious, made ever harder when knowing all the parties involved . it certainly was a shitty thing to do. Noel always seems to be a fair and although highly disagreeable he's usually jovial and fun to be around most of the time but damn would I love to see his face if Tony and Chris walked in the room, I think they are owed a sit down and a hatchet burying as one thing I know about the Griffiths brothers is they are Honest to a fault and no matter how hard they try they can't hold a grudge they are far to big hearted for that. Lets hope one day it happens
Noal is a great tallent but there's a reason I'm not into his High Flying Birds stuff but was a huge fan of OASIS. It may well be Noel who drives the genisis of these songs and gives these songs their colour and depth, but, clearly it takes a band to make them, and the sublte nuonces are as important as any other part of any song. Maybe copyright law should be changed to reflect this.
Probably McGee giving a young Noel some cut throat advice beforehand in regards to taking all the initial credit instead of sharing it with The Real People, at least that’s what I think would have happened.
maybe they also wanted to portray Noel as the “genius” single songwriter. Still seems to mostly hold true Imo. Although Noel generally lifted ideals left and right. Not that he is the only one to do so.
@@arnesl929 I used to think it was mostly true. But the more I learn about "influences" (more so people Noel copied) the more I think he didn't have too many original things to say. I think more and more will inevitably be unearthed as time goes on.
@@markythompson I agree somewhat, I personally do not consider him he genius at least not technically. And there is not much original about it. He might obviously have had a special ability to put together songs people related to, even if lifted from parts of other songs. I still think songs like live forever and don’t look back in anger will be remembered as great songs for a long time.
Excellent video. It's very difficult to discuss an event from the past without your own personal take on things and your own judgement, but this was very well presented and researched and it offered a great insight into how things were at the time. Thank you for your work
Completely fits Noel's character. If he can absolutely thrive on cutting his own brother out of his life and not have even an ounce of remorse about it, it would be incredibly easy for him to fuck over a bunch of guys he met and worked with for a time. Noel is only about Noel. Everything else is expendable.
I think it is just Noel's way of dealing with people, after the trauma of his old man's abuse. I am similar, in that once a line has been crossed, that's it, no matter who you are. Haven't spoken to one of my sisters in over ten years, and have no intention to again.
@Sleeping I've always sensed a little bit of jealousy from Noel also towards Liam which is why he felt the need to talk him down to the press. Liam was younger, better looking and was the centre of attention as the frontman and think this is what Noel wanted deep down. My bit of armchair psychology! :)
it's not that simple..I'm no huge fan of Oasis anymore..Used to be as a kid but I'm still interested in some of their music etc..I heard that Liam had been slagging off Noel's wife and child. No matter how pissed off you are, that is not on. Not at all. No matter what you think of Noel, his family are innocent. Noel adores his wife and children, and I can see he is protective of them. I admire that. Liam comes across as more grown up these days, and that's cool..but to say all that shit to innocent kids...Just wrong.
Thanks James, this was fascinating, and sadly unsurprising. I was given Tony McCarroll’s book as a present a few years back and have never got around to reading it. That is about to change! Thanks again
Noel's greatest strength looks to be his ability to schmooze with all types of people. From the scally working class lads of the council estates of the NW to the champagne sipping right on crowds of the media machines of the BBC and record labels. Without that I don't think Oasis would have got where they did. By extension neither would any band he *ahem* borrowed *ahem* lyrics or melodies from. Morally what he has done could be seen as questionable but I don't think there are many people that could have pulled together the hype machine that was Oasis the way he did and put out some choice music into the bargain.
@semajdis “could be seen as questionable” - Really? Noel Gallagher took credit for somebody else’s work and then he kicked them in the teeth. What a lowlife.
Was chatting to Chris and Tony on Mattew St Liverpool on sunday night...they are top blokes always have time for a chat and they are brilliant musicians.
Noel wanted to create the impression that he did it all on his own, I remember him saying that most of definitely maybe was written when he was working laying gas pipes!
Discovered and loved The Real People and Rain in my mid to late teens, about 1991. Proper rootsy bands. When I heard Supersonic for the first time on the ITV chart show I thought, that's brilliant, sounds like The Real People. It does resemble the magnificent Car Outside you gotta admit. I do wonder how much of Marshmellow Lane Noel had heard in the run up to Definitely Maybe. There's such a similar sound to The Realies throughout that first album
The real people were recording marshmallow Lane around 92 I think. I'm guessing Noel heard a lot of it when they were touring with the inspiral carpets. Also Chris and Tony probably played them their songs in the studio. That album looks to have had a massive influence Noel a prime example being feel the pain which he lifted for don't go away.
Most people 45+ in Liverpool who are into music know that the Realie's & Smaller were the influence behind Oasis as well as the Roses & The Beatles and all that, it's nice to see that other people out there can now get to hear the 'truth' behind the rock n roll myths if you know what I mean? Brilliant channel & reporting James by the way
My opinion is Oasis were originally Liam's band formed with his mates. Noel was asked to come down and audition with them and play some songs that he'd written over the years. However there is a good 5 years between Liam and Noel in age and whilst Liam wanted to be a rock star Noel had already lived that life to an extend from his days working with The Inspiral Carpets. Noel didn't have the same feelings of goodwill towards Liam's mates the other members because there weren't his mates they were Liam's. To Noel they were just hired hands and ultimately Noel is quite a shrewd character. Ultimately Oasis were a vehicle to showcase his song writing skills and a way to try and get rich and his ruthlessness and occasional wickedness showed he didn't care who got in the way. An increasing ego and drug consumption probably didn't help and drugs and alcohol can often bring out the worse out in people. I'm not trying to suggest Noel is all bad mind.
Agreed Oasis was Liams band , Rain was Tony and Boneheads band we can thank Liam for Noel joining. He brought Noel to watch his band I think your right the age difference was important. Another thing Noel was finished, sacked by Inspiral carpets??
How about Champagne Supernova and Supernova by Five Thirty? Alan Mcghee absolutely loved the song (Five Thirty's) I should know because I wrote it and he told me!
A brilliant video, James and a maybe a bit of restorative justice too. I really liked the bit at the end where you acknowledge that we’re all a mix of qualities and no one’s conscience is quite clear. Two things struck me, thinking it over. One was the remark you quoted near the beginning about perceived differences between Liverpool and Manchester band cultures. It’s definitely the case I think that particular places, cities say, foreground certain values at the expense of others. Some places will feel to a majority of people kinder, or more dangerous, or more fun-loving or creative than others. This has a strong bearing on how we all learn to present ourselves. On top of that there are institutions and times. It might be very important to be ‘hard’ in a cell block, but not in a refuge for victims of domestic violence. And the lad culture of the 90s has now in many peoples’ minds started to go the way of flared jeans and flat caps. So in some cultures it might be easier than in others to get away with being a bit ruthless. The second thing is hinted at in your mentions of Alan McGee and that’s career strategy. People who want fame need to make a strong impact and for that you need a very well-defined and simple image. I wonder if at some point early on Noel might have been advised to simplify the story you tell here. Of course now that Oasis is probably over and has achieved global fame, it’s possible to let some of the complexities back in. Led Zeppelin didn’t initially give credit to Willie Dixon, but later they did. Still, it’s a fascinating topic and you open it all up with you usual depth and flair. Thank you.
You are being overtly courteous James! Its bang out of order, what he did, especially when you consider the help the Griffiths brothers gave Oasis. I didn't know the half of this. Noel Gallagher is a narcissistic thief, no less!
Nice vid! Have any interviewers been brave enough to question Noel about this blatant lifting? In regards to good people doing bad things, Noel seems to have been a wanker most of his career, rarely looking out for anyone other than himself (Sure, he gave his bandmates a career but they were always seen as pretty much disposable to him). Liam always came across as rougher around the edges but far more genuine.
Sad to hear this. I always loved Noel, but if he has no sense of honesty, integrity or generosity, then I genuinely feel sad for him. His talent is not in doubt. His character and decency is what's in doubt.
Part of the appeal of Oasis when they first burst on the scene was that they all behaved exactly like a bunch of scallywags, exactly the type of people who'd steal something and pass it off as their own, step over people to achieve stardom, which is why the middle class did and still do despise Oasis. Noel has been open about stealing riffs just as he was open about getting done for shoplifting. Now we have all this handwringing about his lack of decency when he never pretended to be anything other than who he is.
I don't agree with half the things Noel says or does, but I get it now. His father was a complete bastard. The abuse that guy suffered as a child is heartbreaking and the reason why Noel AND Liam have ended up how they are.Noel comes off these days as a rich and arrogant egotist but I reckon it's just a huge two fingers up to the father that abused him instead of protected him!
Awesome video! Great job James. A few years ago I first heard about this and went to listen to The Real People's tunes to hear how they compare to Oasis and there's some extremely close comparisons even besides the 3 songs you focused on as case studies. Really interesting to find out even more about this thanks to your video. Keep up the sleuthing!
@@markythompson " hello " is a rip of a Garry glitter song you should check it out. I think the glitter song is called "hello good to be back" it's very alike. I'm a big fan of oasis and all there's solo stuff, but Noel has lifted a lot of stuff 😁
Another great video.. a good friend of mine convinced me to go see the real people with him a couple of years ago, he said it’s where oasis started and you’ll know what I mean when you get there, I was gob smacked how many parts of their songs featured on oasis albums, even if not directly stolen but sounded so alike, mainly from definitely maybe.
Noel was likely just preserving his own myth, McGee built him up as the boy wonder, master songwriter - which he was. There's a difference between robbing from Stevie Wonder and Coca Cola to robbing from the Realies. Oasis were working class, so it was the same thinking as, steal from the high street - fine, steal from your mate - not cool. Band of the people shouldn't steal from them - The Real People that is.
Feel The Pain by the Real People is a great song, but to say it's identical to Don't Go Away is simply rubbish. The tempo is similar and some of the acoustic guitar strumming, but the vocal melody is completely different. As is the chord progression.
Update. Allan McGee was on talk sport today on the white and Jordan show. So,eone write in to say the role of the Real People should be creidted. McGee strongly agreed with this.
Saw the Real People in 2002 in the bizarrest setting, opening up for Simple Minds (my guilty pleasure) at the NEC, which was about a quarter full when they were on. They were a good live band.
Well he ripped off a lot of the Beatles, was sued for stealing from a Coca cola ad, and probably did not credit stuff Liam contributed. He's just a creepy guy. I am not surprised. He is a bit of an ego maniac. It must have been hard to gig with him. And since he left Oasis his concerts are hardly electric - He doesn't connect to an audience.
I've always found Noel's need to bash Tony McCarroll and Alan White at every opportunity to be really distasteful. He bitches about Whitey blowing a few takes but in the same breath will talk about how he and Owen Morris spent weeks of expensive studio time fannying about with sound effects and all this other crap that you'll never hear on the record. And to his his attitude is "Well, that's just how it was..." But God forbid Whitey or Tony's timekeeping drifts a but during tracking. If it was that much of an issue, Noel, just buy a fucking metronome!
I had the chord book and always wondered who Chris was. What a blast from the past. The Oasis B-Side ‘Going Nowhere’ Has some of the same vibe of The Real People’s song of the same name. Great video by the way.
Well I've always thought Oasis were a very lucky band, not much talent and totally overrated. It seems Noel never wrote one original song. Shame on them really.
Excellent video, James and really interesting as I wasn't aware of this story myself. In a way it doesn't surprise me that Noel would have done this as he always did have that dark side to his personality and maybe it was ego and greed that took over. One thing that stands out to me funnily enough about Rockin chair is the chorus sounds quite similar to the pre-chorus of Tiffany's "I think we're alone now" the "running as fast as we can" bit in that song. So perhaps he should credit Tiffany too for that one lol. Great video anyway, James as I always enjoy your Oasis analysis back story ones.
'I think we're alone now' is a cover of a 60s song by Tommy James and the Shondells. Makes sense that Noel would Rob it. It's a fair point there is some similarity.
Ya Noel has his problems but I like Liam more. Noel may have been the guitarist but he would be who he is if he never joined Liams band before they changed it to Oasis. I was sad asf when I found the truth about what he would say and do to Tony. Oasis first drummer. He's a good and perfect for Oasis but Noel hated him for no reason. But i mean he is who he is. I like Noel but I always prefer his brother who is straight up and accepts when he's wrong unlike Noel.
It must annoy the shit out of Noel that Liam is doing so well on his own without him. Liam is doing two nights at Knebworth this year and Noel not even anywhere the top of the bill at Glastonbury. The irony is sweet. When it comes to songwriting, Noel is good but he never claimed to be original only clever. The public love Liam - not Noel. Pity that Noel never gave full to The Real People, they deserve it.
@@sunsfan101981 I think Liam has reached “legendary” status for the young generation of today with his history and his public persona. I’m not into his solo stuff, but in his live shows he pulls it off big time. Liam knows how to make a splash in the media and I’m glad for him that he’s doing so well. Two nights at Knebworth is a big deal. Noel’s time will come again, just not this year.
..I used to be firmly on Liam's side but then I now know that Liam had been slagging off Noel's family. That's not on in my eyes. I understand Noel totally. I would do the same if someone shat on MY family like that.
@@desertrose1226 I’m a Noel man myself, he is a very talented man and I love his solo stuff especially his last album “Who built the moon” - brilliant. But at the same time I’m glad for Liam, he is doing so well that he has finally realized that he doesn’t need Noel anymore - and has stopped hassling Noel and his family, which was despicable in my view. I don’t like Liam’s solo stuff, but live he kicks ass. Noel’s time will come again - just not this year.
I’ve always known of the real people and their influence and involvement in early oasis. Ok so they “wrote “ two oasis songs and have probably been decently paid for that now. Yeah I get that they would like a proper credit on the records and I think they should but it’s probably time to let go, although if I was that involved with oasis I’d probably keep telling everyone too! They come across pretty bitter in a video I’ve seen and I think it’s because they knew oasis (the rain) and thought that things would be great but then Noel came along ,made oasis and blew everyone out of the water!
Great video! i think part of is it to do with the wider issue of selling the oasis myths that was so important in their early success. The myth that the band were plodding along and then noel walked in with a bunch of songs and took over the band was massive at the time. that would have been undermined by a shared songwriting credit. maybe noel had to wrestle with the truth and the creation of the legend there are many other myths involved in the creation of the band that were sold to the press and helped fuel their rise.
One song I don't see mentioned often is "All Around the World", a complete rip of Donovan's "Atlantis" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9AUEjzVQwKo.html It blew me away when I stumbled across it. As good a songwriter as Noel is, he also seems to have a narcissistic element, and the Real People saga is an example of gas lighting, a narcissistic trade mark. As is stealing what you want (ideas, identity...) and claiming it as your own. I've experienced both.
@@thegoodsamaritan112 Are you joking? It's literally the same chords just in a different key. Give your head a shake and listen again. The start, then skip past all the Atlantis talk and even the melody is the same. He's just added new words. Noel loves Donovan, he even named one of his Sons after him.
This happens a lot and no one really cares. I was very close to the actual writer of the rolling stones wild horses untill he died in 2020. His last name was neither Richards or Jagger.
Just wanted to say love your channel, James! Your Amsterdam Incident video was suggested to me by YT a few weeks and intrigued I watched. Since then I can't get enough, of your videos on Oasis, The Stone Roses, The Seahorses and The La's. Totally addictive, I'm loving working my way through the content. Really informative, and immersively takes you back to the time period. Thanks for all your hard work!
I don't like Oasis. Never have, never will. However, as someone with a general interest in bands and music history, I find these videos by James fascinating.
J, you’re spot on that in our messy lives as humans we all pause and think ‘that was a bit of a mistake’ but when Noel could have and should have…he didn’t. As he says, he’s a cat 🤷🏻♂️
It was probably an ego thing to begin with. So he could always say in interviews etc I write ALL the songs. The funny thing is that nobody would of thought any less of his talents for having a co-credit tucked away on sleeve notes for Columbia an album track, And Rockin' Chair a B-Side! The Real People's names deserved to be there, weather it's as co-writer or co-producer or inspiration. Once he'd made it as a world famous songwriter & the 90’s excess was over that ego probably calmed down slightly as by the 2000's he was asking Gem and Andy to write for Oasis albums.
James, if you go on the Real People's Wikipedia page, you see that Anthony Griffith's is credited for providing backing vocals on supersonic. Is this the album version? Or some sort of demo? I've never heard backing vocals on that track. Worth a video perhaps?
Hi Mark - the Real People's backing vocals are the 'Aaaaaaah' harmonies over the bridges - kicks in at around 1min5s, sounds a bit like a synthesizer in the background 👍👍
@@robertlangley9437 that’s right. Supersonic was actually started by Tony jamming on the drums with the rest of the band joining in. Then Noel wrote the lyrics.
I think Noel did it specifically to retain/attain his image as the mastermind behind Oasis and the idea of having some other band take even partial credit for "his band" or "his people" was too tough for him to let go.

liam apparently had a few of contributions to some early songs. noel even admits how liam basically wrote the “so sally can wait” part to don’t look back in anger. odd why only NG got all the credit
@@bruhmomento6844 it happens a lot. "rusholme ruffians" by the smiths is literally marr playing marie's the name by elvis. the only hook apart from morrissey is rourkes great bassline but he gets no credit. the talking heads basically wrote all the music together but david byrne takes all the credit
Great video James. Yeah the Real people were shafted by Noel I don't why he did it when they helped so much in the early days. On a plus side though I bet a load of Oasis fans when hearing these stories go check out the Real people back catalogue and might become fans of theirs and go and see them live. Also Tony's book is excellent I got it when it first came out and I did think at first some of the Noel bullying stories where a bit exaggerated but over the years I've changed my mind. Does anyone have a link for the song that sounds like rocking chair.
Wow 🤯 Awesome vid Edit I disagree with the cat comment. Not all cats are Bastards, My little man is lovely and loving. He loves his mum and me. We are bed time buddies + Thunder buddies too 😻
Never really got oasis, but still an interesting video, for the people who think the son shines from Noel Gallagher’s ring piece. A band in the right place, at the right time, capitalising on the procrastination of bands like The Roses, and surfing on the crest of the Britpop wave. Always saw through his songwriting limitations, but never knew he was such a thief. Those scouse lads should feel rightly aggrieved. Mind, Liam seems sound, and Noel seems a bit of a twat. About the strength of it, really.
@Patrick O’Donohue Yep, agree with a lot of that, but with in-fighting, and copious amounts of skunk, they did themselves no favours. Far far superior to Oasis, musically though.
It's really weird this situation because although all this was going on at the time, especially 1997 with Don't Go Away, Noel, ocean colour scene and the two Griffiths brother played day tripper together on a night of OCS's tour. You can notice that the Griffiths and noel don't really look at each other during the song, but I can't understand why they would play together considering what was going on.
Ok, they may have been influenced by the Real People on Definitely Maybe. What about Morning Glory and the songs that propelled them into the best band in the world ? Does Noel Gallagher get the credit for that ? You can’t say they may never have made it mate. Noel he songs like Masterplan, Going Nowhere, Whatever and All Around the World written in the early 90s.
Even if they were influenced by the real people, there's literally nothing wrong with that, every band and every person learns from someone else, no one's born a genius, and some people struggle to understand that, since today everything is overly idealized. Bet the real people learned from someone else too. Don't get me wrong i am not defending what Noel did, i think it's quite nasty. But musically speaking, to be fair, Noel was a guy with literally no knowledge about music theorie, and he was already writing songs in 1989, he just needed that little push.
He is a loving father. A great husband and caring friend. He has donated millions, his time and his property to multiple charities. He often will go out before soundchecks and sign autographs for all the fans waiting for him. He does sound checks because he cares that people a good show and will take care of his voice. Which he is constantly trying to improve be because he is not a natural signer and once again he wants to put out his best.He releases things as demo's to give fans something new to listen to while they wait for an album to come out. He is a generous and kind boss. The list goes on and on. There is definitely a light side to Noel people just choose to not see it . It's like Liam there is a light side to him too and there is a dark side to him.
I used to be friends with a woman from Florida called Lisa Nash, who was in a crappy punk band called screaming sneakers in the 80s- she told me that she demoed a punk/new wave cover of the song MONY MONY to her then friend BILLY IDOL, Idols reaction was like 'why didnt I think of that?!', she said after she demoed the song to him, she never saw him again, then a few months later Idol releases the song as his own and becomes a hit. Ive read his autobiography , and in all probability, it wouldn't surprise me if 66% of it is bullshit. I'm not sorry it happened to her though: I soon found out that Lisa Nash was an exceptionally evil, deceptive back stabbing bitch, and actually deserves every bad thing that happens to her.
Sound more like handlers to me. Prepping Oasis to become the band they were always going to be, NOTHING in the entertainment industry is left to chance.
I used to have the Encyclopedia of British Hit Singles ( Mike Read Johnathan King & more DJs on the cover ) printed before Britpop. There was an existing act called Oasis - a light entertainment group a bit Swingle 2 if I’m not mistaken. Had the brothers gained their approval before using the name I wonder ? Inspiral Carpets were sometimes produced by the amazing Dave Fielding but no doubt you’re aware of such stuff because your work is wonderful or educational. Thankyou 😁👍
Wasn’t Noel speaking about a specific incident regarding a confrontation between tony and Noel? His statement is not a full endorsement of every word in Tony’s book
How the bloke still has the bollocks to go on tv with the attitude he has is frankly psychopathic. Ive never held Noel in the reverence many do, ive always just felt he was a fraud
All bands are "inspired" by other bands. How many bands out there are actually original, doing something that hasn't been done before? Particularly in main stream music. Were The Real People original? Not defending Oasis, but the idea of plagiarism in music is irritating. Music has been reduced to a small number of notes, textures, styles and sound effects being repeated. The idea that people now demand writing credits for a three-note riff is ridiculous. Just make it a free for all. Most music is shit anyway, full of unnecessary drama and inflated egos.
I had some real people stuff.. window pain springs to mind.. Oasis totally ripped there sound off. It was the first thing I said the first time I heard Oasis..
