Noel said in an interview recently (and no doubt on other occasions) how Definitely Maybe was the best, most complete Oasis Album. Tony by extension is no small part of why. I love Alan Whites drumming, but his later ghost snare & kick embellishments etc when covering the groups earlier tunes always grated with me. Those that know know, and Tony will forever be tied to the best era of that band. Wish him all the best, he inspired more drummers than he'll ever know.
@markd7013
@markd7013 Год назад
i'd agree with that. there is nothing Whitey did post Tony that was particularly hard to play...maybe a bit more intricate, but not unattainable. And actually, Whiteys style was perhaps a little samey after a while. eg lots of that beat loosely based on the baggy sound. Ringo was never the best technical drummer...but its what he came up with that counts, the originality. i get that Tony's stuff was relatively basic, but this is what fitted the songs the best. Nobody wants extravagant fills and rolls in songs anyway (except maybe other drummers 🙂 )

So glad to see I’m not the only one who felt that way about Whitey. I loved him in the Morning Glory era but grew to despise his drumming by the end. Very samey to the point that you knew what the fills would be before you heard them. I’m probably one of the very few people out there that were actually relieved when he got sacked.
@robertocaba5915
@robertocaba5915 Год назад
Tony’s drumming was awesome in DM, even if feels sloppier than White’s, which I find rather boring tbh. Minimalistic but with a punkish edge sadly lost afterwards. And lots of iconic drum riffs on that debut. It wouldn’t be the same without Tony’s drum sound, that’s for sure. A great lad too

From what I can gather, Tony McCarroll is a smashing bloke. What I know is that he was a smashing drummer, totemic to the rhythm section on an album and two singles that framed a wonderful time. It was so pure and exciting. It sounded amazing. What I also know is that he was subject to manipulation and bastardry at the whim of another human, and he was harmed, and his trajectory in life was taken from his control. It’s a credit to his strength and integrity that he is as affable and kind as he is. Fair play Tony. Thank you for enriching us - we remember it yeah. Cheers.

Tony was the drummer that inspired me to join a band and learn to play the drums after repeatedly listening to Definitely Maybe. I remember speaking to Nigel Clark (Dodgy) in 2017 after we’d opened for them at a gig; he was incredibly friendly and asked me who some of my favourite drummers were and I mentioned Tony as probably the main influence for me. He brought up the gig mentioned where oasis supported Dodgy and said he always thought Tony was a good drummer and respected that Tony was the drummer I picked as one of my favourite. Terrific video!

The way I heard it, Noel & Tony grated on one another occasionally & Noel was the Guvnor, so that was that. I wonder if Tony found Noel & Owen aggressive in the studio & doing tracks again & again, alone, without the band to bounce off just didn’t suit his personality? It wouldn’t be that surprising. Such a different vibe, a studio, I guess?

Chris Sharrock stayed largely faithful to the album versions though, the only Oasis drummer post-Tony to do so. While that swingy-quarter note pulse thing became the Oasis "feel" from Morning Glory on, I'm surprised Chris was the only one to inject the straight 8ths feel back into the DM songs, live. Then again, if what Liam said is true for all the replacements, they wanted them to do what they do and don't feel you need to copy your predecessor(s).
