Each ending has a variant of the wolf. Bad ending: no wolf. True 1: LRRH is the wolf. True 2: Mom is the wolf. True 3: Hunter is the wolf. True 4: Grandma is the wolf. ....Well, it seemed like good symbolism up till the 5th ending, anyway.
Wouldn't be Mom is the wolf go more with the 5th ending after all in that ending the man says the mom sold LRRH. And in the second she dies because she gets lost so maybe int ending 2 is nature in general is the wolf or something like that.
Seriously, doesn't anyone know that, in one of the earlier versions of Red Riding Hood, the wolf- disguised as the Grandmother- makes Red Riding Hood strip, and throw her clothing into the fire, before he eats her? In other versions, she survives, usually through some equally grotesque means. The Hunter being a rapist, the mother sending Red off to die, or to be sold into slavery, the Grandmother being some bizarre cannibal hag, or Red Riding Hood being an assassin are all pretty in-universe, considering...
Late response, but Angela Carter has a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood called "Company of Wolves" where little red laughs at the wolf because she's "nobody's meat" and then she kills the wolf with a knife. It's about 6 pages long and the pdf is online.
Having taken a Fairy Tale course at my university we read over a few version of the Little Red Riding Hood story and some of my friends really hate me for not stopping them when they read over one of them. When the hunter showed up all I could think was, 'Nope nope nope. Don't trust don't trust!' And BAM! The purpose of the fairy tale was made for young women to know who to identify as a 'wolf.' While certain strangers could really resemble a 'wolf' in terms of appearance and behavior, there were also 'wolves' who wore sheepskin who would smile and act just as society found acceptable in the open, but hid horrible traits about themselves behind closed doors. So in order for them to be careful they had to stay on the path which could be interpreted as listening to their elders and taking the 'right' path in their lives and not to be fooled by distractions and always think carefully. I can't help thinking this game also ties into the other stories like Hansel and Gretel where the kids were also abandoned off in the forest. Little Red Riding Hood is abandoned and/or used in some way as either an accomplice or as a slave all thanks to her mother. It's definitely dark and twisted and makes you think a little more about fairy tales like Little Red that we were as bedtime stories when we were young.

The stripped naked drawing from the credits is from "wolf man" true ending 3. It isn't a continuation of the bad ending.

What the... the 3rd ending was really disturbing :( And what the hell is wrong with her mother o.o? I think all the endings are in the same universe but with different Red Riding Hood's.... And the right order might be: Bad End > 4 "Canabalism" > 3 "Wolf Man" > 1 "Mothers Bloodlust" > 5 "Human Traficking" 1st Riding hood that gets eaten > 2nd that got eaten but tastes better than the previous one > Grandma isn't really dead but greatly wounded and thus falls "ill" > Mother sees her chance to let the next Red Riding Hood finish of grandma as she is wounded > Mother doesn't have any use of the Red Riding Hoods anymore and sells the last one. And somewhere in between End 2 "Lost Woods"...
Actually, I think that ending 2 might be the first, since the red riding hood got lost, so the mother may have given directions to other red riding hoods later on
I think that ending is the only time so far I've seen Manly just go silent and refuse to keep narrating something and that coupled with way he breaks character and lets a muffled "Christ" slip speaks volumes about how far it crossed the line even by horror standards with that last image

So the game's about a Cannibalistic Old Lady who owns a criminal empire, eating the children her daughter sends and selling those that run away. It reaches to the point that the daughter contacts the *Red Hood* guild to finally put an end to the madness. Why this game is a *FREAKING MASTERPIECE!*
The story makes me think that the "Wolf" was actually the good guy that all these fuckers didn't wanted her/them to find. He could be the officer investigating the cannibalism/paedophilia/human trafficking cases in that little rural community...
_Little Red Riding Hood... "a tisket a tasket" but what’s in her basket?_ The nursery rhyme talked about dropping your love note to the boy you like & then either getting a sweet kiss or having to confess his name. But there's no such love story here - it’s a game from Charon. Pick a bad ending - any one of them was bad. Even arriving safely at grandmother's house seemed cruel in this game - for nothing to happen at all is an empty life. Or in a never-ending journey to find herself, she was lost forever - no GPS! Or some of the worst, like meeting a man in the middle of nowhere - dressed all in black - & instead of a scythe, he held a gun. Instead of protecting her from the wolf, he was a worse animal. Then her mother is shown to be a “procurer” - finding runaway little girls to feed monsters of different kinds who have particular tastes & needs. A very dark game indeed.
Her basket had a very crappy game in it. Dark? At 0:38 the girl already looked like some PTSD victim. There wasn't even an attempt at a good ending. The best one was her being lunch. The only good thing about the game was that it was short.

The very oldest versions of this have girl being tricked by the wolf into eating part of her grandmother, accused of "loose morals" by a cat, & altho she climbs into bed with the wolf-as-grandmother, she realizes it & escapes. Later the story changed & her cloak became _red_ to symbolize that no good little girl would be wandering off the path or talking to a strange wolf & definitely not getting into bed with one. The point behind the story originally was more of a growing up tale... youth becomes older & wiser with experience, enjoying the _pleasures of the flesh_ loosen morals, do not drop your clothes or hop into bed with any/every wolf, & learn to use your wits (pretend you have to go to the bathroom) to escape. It's like Saturday night at a club, only with a cloak. The implied rape scene here wasn't that bad, maybe because the words were so cliche & you only heard the sounds of cloth ripping & her pose. Not trusting the woodsman & human trafficking were odd & sad additions. Greengolight - she looked wide-eyed & naive...not like trauma victim. This was not my favorite game because it was rather repetitive & endings were too cliche, not because of implied violence. ^w^
The moaning sound that plays after you pick the yellow flowers is very very disturbing to me. I assume it's supposed to be the wolf, but it really just gives me the jitters due the low sound quality and supernatural eeriness.

Here she's just being sold into child labor. The real interesting twist here is that absolutely NONE of those endings had an actual wolf in them.
Manly is right, The Path does have a very similar concept to this game. However, The Path has 6 different red riding hoods and 6 different wolves that correspond to them based on the girls' interests and flaws. It's a much better executed version of what this game was trying to do imo (and yes, one of the endings does involve implied sexual assault, but it's done tastefully with symbolism).
So I had to research Red Riding Hood and all its versions for a class paper. Not sure if Charon intended this, but Endings 3 and 4 have a lot of similar themes from an older version called "The Story of Grandmother..." (which wasn't meant for kids for obvious reasons.) It's such a bizarre story particularly when you get into the analysis and symbolism in it but makes those particular endings seem a little less... strange.
looliya Explain to me how a story that involves a Young Girl getting turned into a murderer, lost and starved in the woods, finding that her grandmother is a cannibal, being sold into slavery, and being 'sexually assaulted' as the "True Ending"s while having the Only ending where nothing bad happens called the "Bad Ending" is Not being edgy. Maybe you like this game, maybe you think it's insightful, fine. Doesn't make it any less edgy.
To be honest, the only thing I liked from this game is the art. I find it great how they paint in pixel and use thick black shadows. The rest of the game was just making it dark just because. And the 3rd ending was predictable as hell.

Charon's games can be weird. She only has that axe in the first true ending, where she takes out grandma. Meanwhile, in the second true end, it was full of rocks. In the third, it would've had just the wine for grandma. Ditto for the fourth (to wash down the girl lmao). Fifth would've been filled with something random so she doesn't get suspicious.
The one thing about the story of little Red Riding Hood that's always bothered me is...WHO LET'S THEIR KID WALK THROUGH THE WOODS ALONE?! What the hell were her parents doing that they couldn't go with her to visit their ailing mother/mother-in-law?!
Sad that most ppl seemingly don't know all Bad Ends are True Ends because they are all the versions that have been told and narrated throughout the course of time, while the Bad End is just how people oftenly just would idealize how it would go.
I agree.The variations have been very dark,as in Little Red goes far as commiting cyanide,such as strangling the wolf to death with a scarf or drowning the wolf.She wasn't an innocent lass in most of the versions,and I kinda consider her to be worse than the wolf.The game just tells us that the story isn't such a children's tale,which is why the true endings are bad.
The thing you said with the grandmother is actually true (metaphorically) one small change, one small stray from the path could lead your life to change drastically. You never know
I...HATE games like this. It's interesting in a trivial way, but it could've been so much more. The whole point of a "True End" is for it to BE the true ending. There can't be five, motives can't change just because you took one path that's completely identical yet separate from another path. This whole time, I've been trying to draw a coherent story from this. For example, the ending where Red goes straight to Grandmother's house and nothing untoward seems to happen was listed as a bad ending, the ONLY bad ending, and you can understand why if, later upon seeing Grandmother eating Red, you're meant to assume that's what's about to happen. In the ending where Red kills Grandmother, she arrives late, which leads me to believe Grandmother was asleep, meaning Red could make the first move and off her cannibal grandma due to her mother's warnings. Of course the mother would want the grandma dead; she's an accessory to multiple murders with no benefits and wants out. Even that bit, they could've made more interesting and complex by simply adding another text flashback with Red speaking to her mom. Even the multiple Reds could be explained by the mother adopting daughters to use as sacrificial lambs. The pervy hunter was just an unfortunate possible bad ending. It could've all made sense except for two endings: the lost girl one and that final human trafficking one. In the ending where she starves, they change the contents of her basket. I understand the creator not wanting to reveal that she has an axe, so a stone tool would've sufficed as a description, but she also had a bottle of wine, not just stones. If the creator wanted her to starve without a fight, it was as simple as dropping the bottle and having it break. Then, of course, the mother's motives changed in the human trafficking ending, an ending that could've just been the hunter all over again for how different it was. If it weren't for those two parts, we could've had a focused and compelling narrative. It was so close, and just needed a tiny, nearly inconsequential touch here and there, but just didn't reach it's full potential in the end. :(
Consider this: All the endings are just different red riding hoods, the axe red is the true end because she puts an end to the grandmother who eats the others.
They're all true endings because they're inspired in real versions of Red Riding Hood with different endings. In some RRH survives unscathed, other times she's abused, in others she dies. So there's no true ending above it all
@@cyncirAnd the way I see it, this was all a conspiracy. If these are indeed different Little Reds and were sacrificial lambs, then it's possible the mother sent Axe Red to shut grandma up. I'm guessing the "operation" was compromised and mother needed to relocate so she sent Axe Red to "clean up". To cover it up, the "Wolf Man" was most likely hired by mother to take the Little Red who was already sent out for himself and fool her into thinking he killed grandma. While mother and Axe Red fled to try this again elsewhere. Axe Red is most likely mother's true daughter and her enforcer. It ain't perfect, but that's I got out of it.
As far as I'm concerned, all of this was some kind of conspiracy. Think Promised Neverland. The multiple Reds are either clones, orphans or runaways adopted or created by the mother to be slaves or food. The grandmother in the "Cannibal" ending even implies that that the girl she ate wasn't the first Red sent to her or the last. Axe Red is most likely the biological daughter who also serves as the mother's assassin and enforcer. In "Mother's Bloodlust", it's possible that Axe Red was sent to kill the grandmother to either silence her because mother on the verge of getting caught or to punish her for planning to double cross mother. As for the Hunter/Wolfman, he was most likely mother's client and she sent the final two Reds to him after Axe Red did her job. He gets to have them while mother and and Axe Red make their escape.
The ending with the hunter was so beyond unnecessary and despicable. They very easily could have made an implication that the man was a predator without having all of that. Especially the image of her being undressed. Seriously what the fuck
I’ve kind of interpreted as Little Red being late. Assuming her objective all along was to kill the cannibal grandmother, the grandma may have been asleep, so she was able to make the first move on her
I think I've seen interpretations of Little Red Riding for these ending, in other adaptions (besides The Path which I think does it better and Alice Mare due to the mystery aspect). I found this a little Too predictable (mostly because I already expect it the endings to be messed up in some way; the sexual assault ending being the most predictable).
It's funny, because this game is an example of "cheats in the narrative" : In one ending, the basket contains an axe, and in the other rocks. It doesn' make sense, as there are no reason that what the basket contains changes. BUT if you play the game only once, you'll never know.
I enjoy charons games enough, but for fucks sake man would it be too hard just to have a good ending? How about the good ending being nigh on impossible to reach, even that would be good, but i dont like rape and or yandere being the reward ;-;

A long time ago when I first heard of human trafficking in the news, I thought video games would be a great way to raise awareness. Now after actually seeing a few games incorporating this, I'm not so sure anymore
Aside from the had ending, couldn't it be said that true ending one is the best. I mean I know they kind of do and kind of don't have any connection to each other but what if ending 1 and ending 4 were two options from the same path. Maybe the mother was tired of sending the grandmother little children meat and decided that she'd get the next little red riding hood to assassinate her. Other stuff.... I don't knw, it just feels like if you take all the other endings into account from 2-4 then ending 1 seems the best because of what happens.

It’s the best indie game I have ever played. Trust me bro, you’d definitely feel well at the end of the game. ;) You won’t regret it. Try Black Souls 1 first then once you’re done try Black Souls 2. All of them are free and good quality.

You know, it's a nice idea. Sometimes the fear that you have from something isn't the one you need to have. That's why the wolf didn't appeared in any ending.

I follow him only from 2023, but it's interesting to see Manly's progression by voice. At years 2022-24 his voice sounds confidient, clear and comfortable, but before it isn't as much, and the earlier the video the more it noticeable. good for him he grew more confidient with years.
