I experienced this weird religious blindness first hand. I was called a liar and delusional and was thrown out of an Orthodox Christian monastery on the street to be homeless after being sexually assaulted by the abbot. Egotistically holding onto beliefs whether they are traditional religious beliefs or beliefs about a person can cause a lot of harm.

Indeed, this is an ancient practice, not one only of today: they blame those who remain silent, they blame those who speak much, they blame those who speak in moderation. It's strange, you didn't come across the information that to say "eat my tongue" is a normal thing to say for elderly people in Eastern Tibet to say to kids as a way of teasing them. He wrongly translated it to "suck," but then that word apparently isn't as sexualized in Tibetan as it is in English. Of course it was an intensely awkward interaction and these kinds of cultural behaviors don't translate well, so it's surprising that he was unaware of how such comments would be perceived. I came across several Tibetans and people involved in Tibetan Studies who attested to that, and it resonated with my own experience as someone who studied the language for several years. I guess what we see on the internet will differ drastically depending on our own viewing habits. I agree that the arguments about his divinity and radical innocence don't help--I think devoted Tibetan Buddhists sometimes forget that their worship of their guru won't convince outsiders about anything. But I found arguments about the cultural differences, especially given by Tibetans and scholars involved in Tibetan studies, helpful.
@neththom999
@neththom999 Год назад
The arguments involving the culture, the language, and the context more generally were downright explanatory. And I'm no acolyte. The whole perceived scandal was one of those bifurcating moments where you got an update on who still cares about careful discernment, who still cares about truth. No one can claim to care about ultimate truth and then turn around and fail to do basic research about about simple on-the-ground truths, or fail to even check their own mental fabrications for accuracy, especially in Buddhist circles. The fact that one behaviour can mean something radically different in one culture than another is a perfect example of the lacking of inherent essence (emptiness).

Being greatly interested in Zen Buddhism, I have never found the Dalai Lama insightful, or say anything profound or with any wisdom. Other Zen master's would bring me to tears, like '' Thich Nhat Hanh''. I think maybe the Dalai Lama was just thrown into his position of an incarnate. I don't think the Dalai Lama sticking out his old crinkly tongue, and asking a child to suck on it is a good look at all. I think any other elderly individual on the street poking out their tongue for a child to suck on it, they would be immediately locked up.

Yeah thats something I've seen in Tibetan Buddhism a bit, "blind faith." It's true the Dalai Lama was conditioned into his life completely differently than most of us were into ours, but that doesn't mean he's just automatically immune from greed, hate and delusion or the five hindrances or many of the other troubling mental states that we "commoners" experience. These are some of the things that turned me off from Tibetan Buddhism from the start.

People can get so caught up in a teacher, they don't care about the teaching at all and/or miss the flaws of the human who is teaching. Very common across all human endeavour. I am Christian, but DO NOT blindly defend someone just because of their name, title, etc. Probably the majority of organizations all have these shadowy sides within them and people need to exercise caution when dealing with any human being. My observation from having hung out with a Vajrayana group for a couple of decades now is that , like the Catholic Church or Hindu guru ashrams- claims of, or aspirations to celibacy inevitably lead to sexual abuse and/or deviance. Kalu Rinpoche’s accounts of the abuse he received as a child monk from older monastics is a well-known example of what has gone on for centuries. DL is a political figure made very useful by the CIA , just as so many cult, sect, or tribal leaders have been. Among “Tibetan Buddhists” he is the head of the Gelugpa school- ONE of the 5 historic schools of Vajrayana Buddhism. My speculation is that DL is like other figurehead “special” nobility, royalty, holiness raised from birth in institutions outside the norm. In their dotage, the mask of propriety slips and the id comes out to play the senile creep.
@lastthingsministry

Only born again Christians have the ability to be celibate and only then if they have the spiritual gift from the true God. As God doesn't give spiritual gifts to false religions that is why celibacy doesn't work for any of them. Catholics are not born again for example so that is why they become very perverted when forced into false celibacy

Like, if these are the mythologies that we are building up about people who are living, what does that say about anything or anyone that came before?! Jesus, Buddha, even Dogen or Bodhidharma. It doesn’t ruin the value of what is being taught necessarily, but says a lot about the idealism that we so desperately want to cling to. I remember being a little shocked at the seemingly critical reference to Gandhi when I first heard Living Color’s, Cult of Personality. But yeah! Him too!! If you are criticizing blindly you are doing it wrong. No caps. I was waiting for the evidence, or even an accusation, that the Dalai Lama loaded the sarin gas, or ran logistical planning sessions, or gave money to Asahara (a real endorsement), or something like that. You only accuse him of accepting donations from Asahara and meeting with him. And he acknowledges this in the letter. (Which was qualified but acceptable to the one who asked for it. I think those with eyes to see can pick it out.). If you take the letter at face value the money was used to support the dharma or young monks in exile either way. No Rolls Royce as far as anyone can tell. It is not disqualifying to show kindness to the NVIXIUM cult leader. Or even Asahara himself. It is exactly what one would expect from someone with the DLs purported credentials as an emanation of Avalokiteshvara. Even if he isn't. The letter he wrote also says thank you it is very appropriate. I recall listening to a dharma talk from Shinzen Young about the 10 paramitas. He said the first was dana and even criminals can practice the first paramita. In fact, he said the yakuza could be quite generous. Do you vet every kind or not kind donor before accepting a donation? Take responsibility for his actions? Also, I think there is a bit of a straw man attack going on here. The videos of the fellow lauding Dalai Lamas difference from the rest of us and of his profound innocence and so forth. That kind of thing is beside the point and we can all be positive without too much concern that the DL's s*hit does stink. But the claim of the Dalai Lamas 'serious involvement' with Asahara fails badly.

Though, it also seems that there was a lot of administrative monkey business going on, and it's hard to say or truly know what DL really knew, considering the business of Big Tibetan Buddhism. It's easy to get conspiratorial. The truth is probably something in the middle of whatever opinions there are, and at best all that with asahara calls into serious question DL's judgement, which isn't nothing. Especially if looking from a Buddhist perspective. I would think that would be a very dualistic perspective. I'm not suggesting the Dalai Lama was being predatory; in fact, I'm just not making any assumptions at all because I feel like it is pretty pointless for me to do so. I am not hoping to somehow level up from being a human, but to be content in my experience as a human expression of awareness and awake to the human condition. Once you get involved, buy the t-shirt it's hard to return. My dad was into Osho, Baghwan. He never really got too far down the hole, as he had a family to support etc but he would often mention things he had said, and refer to books. I remember my dad saying something like only he knows if he was a fraud or not. I suspect it's probably more complex and it doesn't preclude parts of what he had to say being meaningful or profound. I suppose like all lives they evolve, even that of gurus and he became a kind of celebrity and all the madness of that. Of having to sit down, crossed legged and dispense wisdom. He rewrote history many times, so to speak. E.g., he once said, he now suspects, in hindsight, that he was tricked into his clandestine flight to India by some advisors, based on false or at least twisted informations. - In sum, we all know that history - which has even of some necessity to osciallate between facts and fiction (in this case on the side of a l l involved parties) - is seldom purely black-and-white. - That´s why scientifically doing history is a big challenge and a difficult art, but that´s another story.

He has said that a few times! Also, that Tibet did not always have a Dalai Lama, and he sees no real need to continue the tradition. They had great hopes the CIA would provide the means (army, weapons?) to oust the Chinese, who invaded at the height of the Cultural Revolution madness. I expect that idea collapsed when Nixon opened relations with China. There are now more Chinese in Tibet than there are Tibetans. BTW, Tibetans also appealed to Britain for help but got none. I don't know anything about CIA money but I have heard Tibetans describe their first years in India. Unaccustomed to the climate and the food, many died, especially from TB and newly acquired diabetes from the diet. They worked on road gangs, slept in the open or, for awhile, in an unused prison the Indian gov't provided. Eventually, they were given a few spots to build monasteries in raw jungle. India was a poor place, itself, and not keen on refugees. It is a tragedy to lose one's country and become like stray dogs no one wants.

@@roxanpierson9541 I already heard this version in the 1970ies, from the "Lhasa Review", if I remember right, which was a bit too propagandistic for my taste. The whole older and newer history is quite a complex matter. Obviously, living standards and life-expectancy have increased a lot in the Autonomous Region Xizàng since "liberation" in 1949. As far´s I know, not only has the population increased considerably, but it also still is Tibetan (how ever one defines the "Nationality", which is not so easy, because there never was a homogenous population) in the majority. It approached the ominous number of 6 million inhabitants of "old times", the Dalai-Lama bureau always talked about. But that was most pobably a fantasy number, because old Tibet never had anything like a reliable bureau for statistics, and no clear defined borders (not to mention the problem of "souzeranity"). In Switzerland, at least, - I know from when I did a study, - that the exile-community was fairly well off and well integrated; the elder generation even complained that the young people are mostly no more interested in Buddhism. As Bob Dylan once sang: "The times, they are a-changing." Collecting data was and is not easy: Propaganda from all sides. Well, I´ll leave it with that...

It is never easy to say if someone did a bad thing "because of" or "in spite of" some connection. If you feel that someone is up to doing something evil, you might keep away from him -- that's what most people would do and expect others to do. You might as well try to influence the evil-doer-to-be, and this only works if he trusts you. So being close looks like approval -- is it really? I don't know. It happened to Jesus. Some of his fellow Jews hated him for keeping company with the tax collectors who worked for the Romans. Now we know what he was trying to do.
