I went to Bike Week, spring and fall from 2000 to 2005. I was told that Black Bike Week was a nightmare and locals dreaded it. They didn't spend money they shoplifted, walked out of restaurant with out paying, destroyed motel rooms, worst of all, went to the bathroom on the streets. I got to meet and party with one of the wildest Bike Clubs 81. They were so nice and well mannered. I don't think it is the color of your skin but how you act and present your self that matters.

Friends there with a restaurant told me the difference was Harley riders were older and spent more money and tipped well. They also went to bed earlier and committed less crime. The second week brought major trouble , crime and problems.Fights in restaurants, skipping out on bills, terrible tippers, assaults on staff. As a whole They were terrible customers. Basically they brought the hood behavior to myrtle beach and it was not well received. If the truth hurts maybe you need to clean up your public behavior.

Take it all with a grain of salt. United is built on anti-black racism. You can find evidence all over the country of law enforcement lying, falsifying reports and everything else. To the point that a cop would pull a Latino or Asian person over but label them black in the report. Businesses lie in order to maintain anti-black racism. The entire country and government lies to maintain a status quo of anti-black racism. The most violent biker gangs in the United States are majority white, yet all the crime happens during black bike week? Suddenly all the white biker gangs, meth dealers and everything takes a week off and it’s just the good old boys, going to bed early. All the gang fights and shootings that happens during a lot of the majority white and Latino bike weeks suddenly goes unnoticed when it’s time to pass laws against black people.

Gotta repaint the rooms all your kitchens is ruined, gotta buy new pots new pans all silver ware is stolen etc etc. The worst part is u never know if u r renting to decent folks just looking to enjoy themselves or are u renting to a bunch of hood rats looking to bring their ghetto bullshit to your business. Are they gonna shoot someone for whatever reason and in turn my business ends up as part of a wrongfull death lawsuit? Blacks are notoriously abusive to wait staff, especially white women. Them tipping is also another foolish expectation. They're so bad to wait on that servers refer to them as Canadians, as they're as nasty as the people asking for a Rye & coke.

I lived in Myrtle Beach for roughly 12 years, and throughout that time, there was never any race based sentiment as to why there was a separation. Yo. So, I’ve lived in Myrtle beach my entire life and this is 100% real. The first week is called “bike week.” And second week is “black bike week.” I’ve literally never heard it referred to by anything else. But there’s so much more that goes into the division aspect. For instance, “black bike week” is stigmatized by everyone here. Even the police have gotten involved and set up what they called “the bike loop” and heavily blockaded all major roads to the point where you were forced to follow the path they wanted you to take to get anywhere and it would just go in a circle like an hour and a half to two hours later. I couldn’t even get a cop to tell me what to do to get home from work one night and I got stuck in it for hours until I finally on like the 5th try got a cop to help me. But they only do things like the loop on black bike week. They would never do shit like that on the first week. It’s like they do everything they can to stop the second week from happening or being enjoyable for the sake of “public safety”

Buddy of mine use to own a liquor store down by the beach. He'd do inventory every month and usually was short 15 bottles or so per month. In May he would do it twice, after harley week and after Bike week. 108 Bottles stolen during Bike week. He hired a security Guard and people would come in and walk out with bottles. They are from out of town, theres virtually no point in even calling Police. So he would lose around $2,000 every Black Bike Week and be subject to a lawsuit if he closed or cut hours. Also, you mention the difference in Fatal Accidents but Black Bike Week regularly results in atleast 5 Murders, dozens of Armed Robberies and Shootings. I worked at a Restaurant down by the beach and we rarely ever had anyone walk out a check except for... you guessed it. Yea, it was regular for people to come from out of town and act like they owned the place because, your from out of town. 350,000 Out of Towners in one weekend, you probably arent going to get caught. So instead of Knee Jerking to racism, maybe we should examine behavior and instead blaming people for noticing trends.

I think there's more to it than that. As for as racism. there's just as much racism in blue states up north as there is in southern red states. There's just no happy face they hide behind in southern states that you have in the Yankee north. and both sides certain business owners, police and Naacp are trying to use this to divide bikers when neither of these biker rallies are segregated as in forced in who can and can't attend, they're separate aimed to the majority of the bikers who attend theses rallies.
@bambam0099

Racism or statistical justification? My wife and I attend Sturgis every year and never fear walking the streets late at night or riding anywhere. And when the Hells Angels show up, the police force beefs up and shadows them everywhere, never a problem. I found this on another thread, and I quote: This is exactly what happens during Black Biker Week in Myrtle Beach. In response many restaurants decided to close their doors, but they were sued by the NAACP for closing during Black Biker Week. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Bike_Week#Charges_of_racial_bias There is also a huge rise in crime during Black Biker Week. Horry County officials reported 129 cases with fines or bond amounts totaling $19,151 during the nine days of the Harley Davidson rally from May 14 to May 22, according to reports. … During the three-day Atlantic Beach Bikefest [more commonly known as Black Bike Week] on Memorial Day weekend, Horry County officials recorded 180 cases and $29,350 in daily fines or bond amounts. … This year in Myrtle Beach during the busy Harley rally weekend of May 20-22, officials recorded six felonies, 385 misdemeanors and 391 traffic-related incidents, according to records. From May 27-30 during the Atlantic Beach Bikefest, Myrtle Beach police recorded 15 felonies, 937 misdemeanors and 952 traffic-related incidents. So for each day of the regular bike event, their were 14 incidents in Horry County per day. During Black Bike Week, there were 60 incidents per day. That is an increase of over 400% during the all black event. www.myrtlebeachonline.com/2011/06/15/2220207/police-saw-no-rise-in-calls.html

I’ve run into many good people, but dealt with just as many entitled/ungrateful people of all races. Some were angry over how much money they were spending and nit picked everything in order to get something free. I’ve been verbally abused by whites, blacks, and asians all with a smile on my face. I’ll happily wake up now in my late 40’s to work on a construction site. The joy of skiing for free and getting pro deals on gear isn’t worth the abuse from tourists of all colors. A tip, if you think you’re vacation is too expensive, or are taking money from your living expenses to go on a trip, STAY HOME! A staycation honestly is more enjoyable to me anyways. Fascinating story. As a 70 year old white biker from the Pacific N.W, I see a lot more respect between bikers here of all races. I ride a 78 triumph Bonneville or a 79 BMW 1000s. Maybe it's my vintage motorcycles or my personal vintage that I get respect from all. Anyway, It makes me angry and sad to see the divide you describe. This was a valuable history lesson that most white people haven't heard. I believe that it is our club leadership, civic leadership, dealership leaders, elders that have to take a roll in ending the racism by hosting joint events, barbques, shows, conversations to bring us together. The responsibility fall on the white bikers and community leaders to start the process but it is the responsibility of all. The racist powers that be make themselves stronger by keeping us bikers separate and preventing communication. It is this way in all parts of life. There is so much anger, assumptions, fear of the " other" that this will take a lot of time. Whites going to Black week and visa versa, sharing beer, food, ideas is what will bring us together. Maybe they could overlap a few days. I remember seeing that at Sturgis in the mid 70s when I had the only British bike there. It seemed to work there for a week. A lot has changed in my life time but not enough. I was expecting more.

There is a huge difference in the clusters of bikers and the type of bikes black bike week has many more sport bikes and three wheelers. The areas they enjoy hanging out it’s all completely different and obstructs traffic differently. The choice of crimes are also different there is more petty theft during black bike week and more petty crimes. Bike week has more violent crimes but spaced out further. Black bike week is usually a 3 day event. Bike weeks spans out longer. They absolutely need to be managed differently

Lived in SC for 20 years. Attended both bike weeks. Always felt welcome by all, unless I was riding my dual sport, then the HD bike week crowd gave me a hard time. All just in fun and jokes though. I did ask a store owner why they closed during sport bike week, he told me that the increased crowds brought higher theft and it wasn’t worth the loss as a owner. The reality is that the two bike weeks have always seemed sport vs cruiser focused. But if I learned anything living in the south it’s that racism is still alive on both sides equally. Growing up in NY I seen it occasionally but never at the level it was in the south. Race is a stigma that needs to be broken. Unfortunately politics and the mainstream media are just making it worse.

good video, I've attended MBBW for 30 some years, early 90's most places wouldnt rent to Motorcyclists period, had to search places out. I remember the first year SBB came to exist, it was a dented can store the owner built a plywood bar inside and bought 40,000 cases of beer from walmart and you would ride in, suck a beer down, bang it on the bar and blow out the back door. There was also a shift in territories , it used to be 16's turf, it then switched over to 81, was a weird year when that happened, you didnt know who to check in with while attending the Rally. If both bike rallies were combined, regardless of color or bike type, it would not be a great time for anyone with over 800,000 bikers there at once, besides other people on vacation & residents! All the way from S.Myrtle to Little River would be so congested you would spend your entire vacation trying to get from one place to another alive and a real bummer when you got there! Recipe for disaster, especially when it really is about bike type and not skin color! I have seen many black people at harley bike week as well as white people on sport bikes Memorial Week bike rally.

Great video. I live just south of Myrtle and jumped in the chaos of Harley bike week twice way back. The second time was after all of the controversy was started. I found it interesting that I saw so many blacks there. And not in their own little groups but all mixed in. If the crowd was big, you would see black people raising hell right beside the white people. Having been here since '95, I've heard enough stories about tipping, walk-outs and defecating behind restaurants, that I bet you could not find many in the service industry during that time that looked forward to the second bike week. Conversely, the waitresses I knew way back CRUSHED IT during the first bike week. There is no way that was all about racism, despite the lawsuit success. What restaurant manager is going to shut down during a massive cash influx weekend. He would be fired by the owners. That said, I'm CERTAIN, there were a few restaurants owned, not operated, but owned by old school racists but those were the exception. I don't give a rip about the color of the skin of the people that are filling up my bank account. To me, they are all green and gold. Do you?
@charlyRoot
@charlyRoot Год назад
I guess because I'm talking publicly, I'm not being very truthful about what I really heard. It's so strange NAACP actually won lawsuits about restaurants shutting down. I never heard much about violence but what I did hear was just not civilized... at all... and was nasty. I was just doing my part to not talk about all of that as to not get flagged for being a human with eyes, ears and a brain. You know those aren't allowed these days.

Me, I used to go to a lot of rallies & it's a turn off to see the vendors peddling political/racist stuff. (It's usually all in the same booth/store). They don't get a dime of my money, so why should anyone go to a rally/town who has very blatantly said (to both sets) "We don't want you here, but we will be more than happy to take your money by overcharging you and restrictive traffic laws, so if you do something 1 millimeter off, you get a hefty fine or you go to jail ????? Not just about the ins and outs of MC culture, how to avoid confrontations, etc. But most importantly, it's about RESPECT. I am a white Harley owner and have been at both rallies. I know that there are two different cultures with different bikes and mindsets. First of all I would say that the town or towns could not accommodate both at the same time due to the large number of people. I think that Harley bike week is and should be for American made bikes,regardless of the color of the rider and the other is for every other manufacturer of motorcycles. But I have witnessed firsthand that during “black bike week “ people were more out of pocket and gave a F%-+ what police or other authorities said. I wish the police were more transparent in their reporting and statistics between the two sides. But the police were Dicks on both weeks as far as I can tell. In my opinion I don’t understand why it is still called black bike week but I have never heard a person of color that they have not claimed it as there own week. Just saying

It is a shame. But then the historical reality of what society accepts as normal today…is shameful. The entire Biker scene owes its existence to white war veterans who refused to conform to polite society. Those same individuals refused black and brown peoples in their ranks, as if they caught in different wars. Just like what is now known as the NFL and NBA, alternative venues had to be created by blacks to accommodate their needs, wants and desires…hence the birth of HBCU’s. (SS/SW/MTS) US Navy, Ret.

This was my 27th Harley week and after 7 years of vacationing in the area for Bike week I moved to the area 20 years ago so I have seen it all, up close and personal. All I know is 20 years ago the Harley Dealers rented the Myrtle Beach Convention center as a base and major fun was had from North Myrtle to Murrells Inlet and major money was brought into the City Of Myrtle Beach, All the Hotels were booked, parking lots full and restaurants were full with lines out the door! Yes you had some traffic deaths but few problems but Myrtle Beach was an exciting place to visit and do all things bike related! Just a few weeks ago during Harley week, Myrtle Beach looks like a ghost town! North Myrtle and Murrels Inlet full of bikers but Myrtle beach was all but empty! The changes Myrtle Beach City made under the direction of Mayor John Rhodes was devastating to the City long term and to many biker friendly businesses, bars and restaurants and people. It was a sad state of affairs for people such as myself that loved bike week and moved to the area because of bike week. Most if not all of the Myrtle Beach biker bars and restaurants that at one time had full parking lots with so many people spending money not just bike week but year round are now closed and boarded up. When is the last time you drove through Myrtle Beach,? It's a sad state and the City can only blame it self. The traffic loop the City put in place a few years back was ridiculous and totally uncalled for and the City deserved whatever backlash it received but understand the City of Myrtle Beach killed bike week for both the Harley week and the Atlantic bike week. I did ride my Harley from North Myrtle through Myrtle Beach to Murrells Inlet this moth during Harley week but even being local I did not stop in Myrtle as I will never feel welcome in Myrtle with my bike. I did see both white and black people on bikes in North Myrtle Beach and Murrells Inlet during this last Harley week all having a great time. Perhaps it's time to just have one big 3-4 week bike rally that everybody rides and I say take the name Myrtle Beach out of it. I say its all about riding, spending money and having fun...

As a Myrtle Beach local I can say that it’s not a racial issue. It’s simply a fact that during black bike week Myrtle Beach becomes extremely dangerous to the point where there are many homicides and I’m assuming it’s because rival gangs go head to head and people get caught in the middle and die from the senseless violence, because two separate groups have some kind of rivalry and it’s insane as a local all of us fear black bike week simply because crime is rampant. It’s nothing to do about ethnicity has to do with the murders that happened specifically during black bike week imagine living here and being too afraid to leave your house because of the chance of getting shot over something stupid

I was a little confused at first and thought the locals were just messing with me and I quickly learned it was a real event that had lots of history some good and some bad. The locals talked about how most of the local businesses closed and boarded up like a storm was coming for the black bike week. As a vendor I was thrown off thinking why would the local businesses give up an opportunity to make money. Unfortunately that was my first experience in segregation and racism. Being from NH I had only learned about that sort of stuff in school and thought it was a thing of the past boy was I in for a shock. Its sad to hear its still this way today. They should join the 2 rallies and promote it as the first 2 week rally in the country.

Sup Brah, I think this is my first comment in my two years following. Initially, I came to get context before I purchased my 2020 Fat Boy. Coming from Bed-Stuy I knew there were protocols I needed to learn. This deep dive into Myrtle Beach is so necessary. I spend a great deal of time explaining these issues to my buddies here in Daytona because many are not even aware of Bethune-Cookman and its storied relationship to Bike Week as the safe haven for Black and Brown ryders. Some get it and some don’t, but it is hard to avoid when we roll up into a bar with the Confederate Battle flag hanging from the ceiling or the long hard stares directed only at me. Sometimes they cut the visit short, because I return the the looks instead of yielding. OBTW, it can not be said more loudly about Red Lobster/Denny’s, they have tried to clean up their act but their history should not be forgotten. Kudos brother, keep it 💯, two fingers down. @@jeffkauffman9563 thank you kindly, Sir. I defended our country for my family and yours. But I have no allusions about our origins or the symbolism woven into our daily lives that reinforce those origins with the Confederacy, or the current government they lost to. Needless to say, if the Confederacy won, I would be a slave. Both governments profited from and enacted laws that were codified by the Supreme Court to insure the advancement of whiteness and the oppression of blackness/non-whiteness. Furthermore, the US Constitution I swore my life, still describes my ancestors as less than human. A uniquely white American worldview memorialized in our national anthem which has been preformed by other descendants of slaves at Super Bowls. I hope we at least agree on those historical facts. As for the underlying premise of your response, I find it an audacious phenomenon how some white Americans believe they possess some mysterious authority to define my feelings for me. Is it not enough, that as a descendant of slaves I am forced to carry images of slave owners in my pocket every day, and use them to feed my household and cloth my children? Would we ask Jewish people to carry an images of Adolf on their currency? Again, I put my life on the line for this country and the freedoms we enjoy, does that not afford me the right to feel how ever I choose to feel about my country? Or does that privilege solely belong to white males in our society? OBTW, I routinely get my historical data from the library or museums. Very Respectfully, (SS/SW/MTS) US Navy, Ret.

I think it's pretty safe to say , that one bike week with certain people , treated those businesses a lot better , than the other group of people in the other bike week. I wouldn't keep my business open that bike week either , just so I could get insulted and ripped off , and my staff abused. You make your own bed , so they can deal with it.

When I was active duty Army, I attended Black Bike Week in 2009 (I’m white), and I had a blast. I never witnessed any fighting or BS’ing at all that I remember. We had a genuinely good time. I would absolutely go again if I didn’t live in Texas now.

Always a good time u never felt more safe and protected than when I am around my brothers of ALL colors. No fighting or stealing or anything like that they have strict rules and if u act up u get dealt with internally.

Been to Harley Week, with a bike that had no baffles and me and my passenger didn't wear a helmet, ( both over 21). As long as you got sense, don't drink while driving then you'll have no problem.

Crapping outside a restaurant? No tips? Theft from all stores, I would close it down too.

@DemonsRow I have been to both bikes weeks, and I have only shown respect to anyone who wanted to chop it up with me, talk about my bikes or theirs, or I might have accidentally shouldered someone while walking. I believe it would be a killer move to see both bike weeks merge together, because the amount of creativity that flows from one bike builder to another always stems from seeing what another builder has done. No matter if it is a backyard builder or a successful builder with a big name. I have always drawn inspiration from all the different cultures in motorcycling, and it has only fueled my unconditional love and respect for motorcycling that much more! However, if it never happens, I will continue to enjoy both weeks of attending the two bike weeks.
