Stephen Torg (Lom) seeks work at a struggling traveling circus. While there, a lion escapes; Torg is able to control it with his skill at hypnotism. Phil Danton (Lyon), the head of the circus, is so impressed, he hires the newcomer. Then someone comes up with an idea. Torg hypnotizes Mary (Crawford) so that she can perform a dangerous aerial stunt without props. Her partner and boyfriend, Tom Danton (Farrar) is suspicious, but is overruled by the others.
With Torg's help, the circus becomes very successful, and Torg is able to force Phil into making him a partner. Meanwhile, Torg falls in love with Mary, though she makes it clear to him that her heart belongs to Tom. As time goes on, Torg begins to exert control over Mary. Before one performance, he tells her under hypnosis that she will be so tired that she will be unable to hold onto Tom during their trapeze act. As a result, Tom falls and is injured so badly, he has to stay in the hospital. The others suspect what is going on, but have no proof and are powerless to do anything.
When Tom recovers enough to return to the circus, he finds that Torg has Mary performing an even more dangerous stunt. While watching it, he unthinkingly cries out her name, breaking her trance and almost causing her fall from the high wire. While Torg is being lowered to the ground, Phil cuts the rope and Torg falls to his death. However, in a twist, the doctor reveals that Torg was shot in the head in mid-air, a feat that could only have been done by the circus's sharpshooter, Dora (Josephine Wilson).

Directed by John Harlow, produced by Max Milder, written by Reginald Purdell and Brock Williams, based on the play by George S. Kaufman and Alexander Woollcott, starring Ben Lyon, Herbert Lom, Anne Crawford and David Farrar.

Herbert Lom is probably best known to most audiences from the Pink Panther films, but he did quite a few dramas (WAR AND PEACE, YOUNG MR. PITT) and horror films (AND NOW THE SCREAMING STARTS, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA). His most unusual role, however, was onstage - portraying the King of Siam in the original London West End production of THE KING AND I (yes, he could also sing, or at least sing as well as Yul Brynner!).

Herbert Lom should have been hypnotising Panthers not lions. Haha. I often wonder how he got cast as Inspector Dreyfuss. He was funny in those movies tho. Thought he was sinisterly good in this but I also enjoyed him in The Lady Killers (1955) alongside Peter Sellers. Coincidence however at 43:04 woman says to Torg (Herbert Lom), "As a lady killer you'd be a scream". In 1955 he was.

Good 'ol Herbert Lom. Everything he is involved in, you know is going to be interesting. From "The Pink Panther", film series as the Chief, to my favorite version of "The Phantom Of The Opera" (1962). Never heard/seen, of this up-tempo drama, and caught my attention from the start😁!!!

a good one. Herbert Lom is incredible and the crux of the whole plot, yet he gets 4th billing in small letters. at least he was at the top of that list! in the meantime, everyone of our age group knows who he is. an amazing presence on the screen and the cinematography used with him was just perfect as to how they wanted to present him. Al the actors were so good, especially the owner of the show - a hard part because he was an anchor for the rest of the action. thanks for this one :) 🤸🏽🤹🏻‍♀🌹

Interesting seeing Ben Lyon ( the circus owner) pop up in this English movie. He was a big star in America in the late 20's and early 30's, co- starring with Jean Harlow, Claudette Colbert, Barbara Stanwyck and Gloria Swanson among others. I always liked his easy going style of acting. He had a long career and passed away in 1979.

Herbert Lom played a really bad character really well, Torg, his character was a megalomaniac who wanted to be worshiped as a god. The other, characters were all decent, caring people and heroic when they had to be, this is a good movie.

Considering I've read the original play by Woollcott and Kaufman, I can't see at all how this film is based on it -- there's absolutely nothing to compare it to. Character names, locations, plot points, everything is different. You'd be just as accurate by saying it's based on "TheTempest" by Shakespeare.

Yakk. It may be well to remember, a pound is not a dollar. A pound was (is) a paper currency reputed to represent the value of a pound of sterling silver. At the close of the war the exchange rate to the dollar varied at around four to one, that would have made the car cost about $160.00 at the time. Allowing for inflation, and remembering the price of things has not risen, rather, the value of currency has fallen, the adjusted price of the car would today be roughly $2,000.00 today. A reasonable purchase. I wish I could find one of those at that price now. Sadly vintage autos are even more rare in Britain than they are in the U.S. Cheers.
@lesizmor9079
@lesizmor9079 4 года назад
It was 40 Pounds, not Dollars; it was 1942 when being filmed, when a new car in the U.S. was $800; the Pound then was worth much less than the Dollar; the car was used and was likely 1/2 the cost of a new one; that car was not that fancy then --- only 2 seats, no trunk, unusable in bad weather, not fast & powerful like you're assuming.

I was trying to figure out why I didn't like this film, and I think it is because I don't like the circus. It was very popular in the 40s and 50s, but not anymore. Clowns creep me out, and I can't help feeling sorry for the animals. Torg was a little over the top for me. And again, just too much smoking. Notice Torg was chain smoking throughout the movie? Really disgusting. I understand film noir has this behavior, but this flick is just too much for me.

Circuses have been along for millenia. Ever hear of the Circus Maximus? Generationally, small circus troops traveled throughout the country - every country. Before the advent of movies and TV they were a major focus of entertainment and produced great talents with abilities that went from generation to generation in families. You would really enjoy reading the history of circuses. I'm sure. In the meantime, everybody say RIP to Barnum and Bailey. The music and lights are gone.

The film isn't about the circus but about the travails of the Ms Mary s cold moon night Affair becoming holy smoke. .... It's about losses in business being mishandled or a dextrous wily gulp letting in risk and going on speedily till the next blow strikes. It's about understanding of Tom the thinker and how to make your match work. .... It's .............
