Emesis Blue is one of the many instances where you don't need a million dollar budget to make an amazing movie.

I want to say something about Jeremy's tooth dream. In Russian folklore, dream about your teeth falling out is a sign that one of your loved ones is going to die very soon. I never saw anyone talking about it. I don't know if it was intentional, but if it is, that is a neat detail.

I just remember a funny comment on another analysis video describing Emesis Blue being a darker version of your typical 2Fort match: -Snipers camping the bridge and sewers -Engie nests by the intelligence -Matches lasting so long they feel longer than eternity -Because of these long matches, respawn times can also get ridiculous -toxic spy mains -Heavies somehow never dying -losing your sanity

One of the most eerie shots in my opinion is the applause after The Butcher's death, not only because of the concept and scene, but because of how creepily static the audience's bodies are while applauding. It's all just so... unsettling. Also I love the detail of The Smoker having no hesitation or pause while playing Russian Roulette, really shows how far into insanity he's gone, either he knows he won't die or doesn't care if he does.

THE APPLAUSE SCENE I KNOW WHY THIS IS! This is because surgeons back in "ye ol' days" would do surgeries in public spaces in a sort of showmanship. This is him doing a "successful" surgery... in a very grizzly manner.

I think Emesis Blue is just another example of just how flexible and influential Tf2 as a whole is.

Soldier asking Fritz "who gave you that order?" is a REALLY important piece of character writing. Most people would've asked "why" or "how" but the first thing Soldier wants to know (and assumes exists) is chain of command and responsibility.

Fun fact: Stalingrad is actually a resident evil reference. He is a mix of Mr. X and Nemesis from the series. Nemesis' head crushing move and Mr. X's looks plus slow walk. And him actually saying builders league even tho he is a monsters is a reference to Nemesis who repeats "STARS." when chasing you.

1:20:20 This is an EXTREMELY niche reference, but it's possible that the applauding crowd is a reference to a now sadly defunct webcomic called Nice Teeth. In the comic, there is a deranged character that goes around committing acts of chaos and murder in order to entertain a crowd of people that demand it of him, that may or may not be hallucinations. The creator was also adjacent to the TF2 sphere back in that time, so it's not an impossible stretch.

Medic’s first name being Fritz can also be a reference to soldier literally calling him that in some of his domination voice lines

I love how Spy constantly treats Soldier like an idiot, but Spy is the one who makes almost all the mistakes

It took me almost a year to realize that the endless time you spend in the respawn machine is a nod to the fact that in-game, when you die and wait to respawn it feels like an eternity

"The Undertaker" Being Fritz after he Respawns? That makes alot of sense actually, plus the Plague doctor mask is a Medic Comedic.

I do feel it important to note that in Spy's Disguise, Dell doesn't just break the respawn machine because he is mad. He does it because he already read the note from s-09 and blu engineer, which included the statement that "[they] do not intend to respawn again."

A popular theory regarding the Undertaker is that he’s the personification of death. 1. Lacks any allegiance or loyalty to any side of the gravel war. 2. The Undertaker is heavily associated with death, he drives around in a stolen hearse and wears a plague doctor mask. 3. The Undertaker only appears to people who have committed murder. Such as Spy, Medic and the Soldier. 4. At one point, the Undertaker is seen to playing chess with Medic. Possibly a reference to 1957 film “The Seventh Seal” where death promises the protagonist if he can beat him in a game of chess, he will spare his life.

small detail - over the course of the film, soldier's eyes are seen much more, and by the end he doesn't even have the helmet could show how his eyes are open to blu's true activities, although that seems kinda surface-level.

i think another important thing to mention is the shot of soldier staring blankly into nothingness (like the one at 2:00:47 ) is possibly a refrence to the famous drawing "Two - Thousand yard stare" by war artist Thomas Lea, which is not only a neat little reference, but also an amazingly subtle way of adding to soldiers characterization as a war vet and a man whos seen horrors no man should ever have to see. a thing i noticed during the film is the spy charecter showing up in the soldiers trench flashback, he gets torched alive by a pyro, seemingly foreshadowing the eventual fate he gets burning himself alive after shooting the pyro

Emesis Blue genuinely changed my perception of BLU being look-alikes of RED to being look-alikes of RED and getting the short end of the stick on everything

When someone tells him they killed someone he doesn't immediately blame that person and instead first thinks of someone higher up. Because he's a soldier! He too killed people, but only because of the orders coming from above and gives that benefit of the doubt towards others.

i think your theory about fritz being the undertaker holds more weight then you think visually too as the undertakers design is that of a middle ages doctor

The people in the church applauding Fritz made me think that it was like they were congratulating him for murdering someone, and now he's just as corrupted as the man he just killed. But that doesn't make sense, since he killed the brothers before that. It could just be his psychosis getting worse and not even have a deeper meaning, too.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Fritz's revival in the Conagher scene isn't because of this "Respawn Core," but seemingly something related to the comics canon. The "surgically attached souls" that people goof a lot about seem related to it, because of a detail I remember someone pointing out. In the scenes where Fritz is in a coffin, the candles seem to represent how many souls he has left, because there's less in the later one. That feels way too specific to be a coincidence.

i like the detail that despite his position in BLU and attitude, Jacque gets made out to be extremely incompetent throughout the story, which makes it seem pretty clear that his success wasnt for any actual merit, only for his willingness to do whatever was asked of him by Archibald.

Something that I noticed about Emesis Blue that no one else seems to mention (except great blue) is that the slaughter house has Impossible Geometry. Like you said in the video, the church has windows to the outside despite being deep underground, but also the elevator itself can’t work in the way seen in the film. The elevator would have to go through the Sewage Tunnels for it to work but doesn’t because otherwise the scene with Soldier and Sniper couldn’t take place

Just my interpretation, but given the color scheme of the applause scene when Fritz kills the butcher, I think it may represent his evil subconscious winning over his good conscious self. His eyes are blue, which as mentioned represents his righteous actions, but the pews are glowing red. I think it shows the evil praising him for killing someone while he is conscious and in control.

Logically speaking, “the creature” is probably Jeremy’s body being “possessed by the life the respawn machine took away from him”

I think it's a testament to this guy's writing that he can turn TF2, just about the goofiest FPS out there, into a horror movie so mind-bending and legitimately creepy that people put it above a lot of Hollywood-produced horror.

Just a quick idea about the church pews and applause thing- it might be a reference to Perfect Blue, the 1997 Satoshi Kon anime movie. When the main character, an actress, triumphs over her own personal demon after a movie's worth of delusions and breaks from reality showing her slowly spiraling into paranoid mania, she has what is for the audience one last moment of false reality where she imagines the crew of the show she was acting on applauding her performance as a way to allow herself a moment of catharsis, and maybe that's the general vibe here?

what i like about Emesis Blue is that it proves that you don't need a high budget, celebrity voice actors, or an entire team of professional animators to make a successful and valueable movie like this, what excites me about Emesis Blue is all the people who will gets inspired to make their own movies.

I would just like to point out, that the song Maynard plays on the Piano was actually changed at some point. The current version plays Blackbird by the Beatles; but the original release played the Toreador March. Given the song is about risking one's life for the entertainment of others while bull wrangling; and that the glory is worth the risk of life... it fit a lot more given what Fritz was trying to do; breaking into the Slaughterhouse to save Jeremy despite the obvious risk of death by the Conaghars; and heck... even the meaning of the song vs what Fritz was doing. It's all about Bull wrangling; while Fritz failed to grab the Wrangler and had to improvise, risking his life further... all for the entertainment of the audience watching. I'm guessing it was changed at some point due to either copyright issues, or because the Toreador March commonly nowadays gets associated with Five Nights at Freddys and a lot of people were specifically commenting about that.

One part of the movie I've never seen anyone else mentionning: During the scene where Jeremy is at home and turn to see his mom's head, the camera shot puts him as the blue pawn stuck between the other chess pieces. During the war flashback Soldier experiences, he sees Fritz playing chess against the Undertaker. Look closely at the pieces. The Undertaker moves one blue pawn as an opening move. Imo, this could be interpreted as another clue of the Undertaker utilizing Jeremy in order to get Fritz to do his biding at the Conagher Slaughterhouse.

Man, that thumbnail image of that final, faded photo is SO haunting to me, probably one of the most chilling images in the whole movie. I dunno why, it's so simple, but there's just some aspect of it that makes my blood run cold... Also, that scene of Soldier's flashback to the trenches is INSANE to me for something made in SFM, that shit's worthy of an Oscar. Also also, I realized that Soldier *is* actually given a name. When Agent Stemmons is talking to him, he calls him "Mr. Doe". At 1:35:45, he says "He had his secrets, Mr. Doe." Referring to Archibald keeping the slaughterhouse from being demolished. He's still never given a first name though, and the name "Jane Doe" itself, much like "John Doe" is a term used to refer to a person whose true identity is unknown or concealed, often by police in reference to an unidentified corpse, and I've always found it somewhat interesting that not only is that what they use for Soldier's name in canon, but that they specifically go with "Jane", the feminine version. Not sure what any of this implies, if anything, but I found it somewhat interesting. Edit: Just saw the last frame, disregard that last tangent about Soldier's name

I honestly think that your theory is one of the most accurate. There are some discrepancies but you backed up all the evidence you made. I find this very interesting and enjoyed watching this.

idea: the names of every burn/explosion victim (aka The Smoker, The Undertaker, etc.) are the opposite of the class they revived from. for example, The Undertaker. the opposite of undertaking is reviving or healing, like how the medic does. another example, the butcher. pyro is obsessed with fire, and fire cooks things. butchers get raw meat, while cookers (obviously) cook meat. also the smoker, where its based off of spy. spy's mortal enemy is the ultimate spy-checker, pyro. pyro burns things, and when things are burning, they emit smoke. (im not sure how the hunter is the opposite of sniper)

Dude I saw it late but I thought "huh this seems like an interesting fanmade TF2 SFM" Like 2 minutes in i lost track of time and just watched it in one go. I couldnt get up for food or drinks, I used what I had and just kept watching. And then it was already over and I felt... good. I havent watched a movie this good since "The Irishman"

At 46:28 another explanation for Maynards lack of eyes could be that Fritz is hallucinating. He takes the same medication as Jeremy does for schizophrenia and it could be that as part of respawning his system is purged of any medication he had taken previously, thus he hallucinates a terrifying vision shortly after.

I feel like the church scene after the beheading is a symbolism of medic’s soul no longer being able of being redeemed, as he has committed one too many murders, because before whether his righteous side or his wrathful side took over, after that specific scene, there’s no longer doubt in his actions, because before there’s clearly a glimmer of either side before doing an action that would forever affect his psyche in a light or severe way, but after the scene he just does it, without remorse or guilt. I feel like the shadows are the exact in between of medic and the undertaker, just like the funeral scene, and the clapping would be a signal of that, a way of saying “congrats, you more and more look like him” Or sum like that

The fact that it was animated in Source Filmmaker, one of the most buggiest, broken, and borderline insanity-inducing animation programs to ever exist _and_ is also feature-length shows the real love and dedication they had for making Emesis.

Phenomenal video, it's easily the best at explaining the video by far. I do have a few ideas/questions that you didn't cover. The medic being the undertaker seems like the most likely option, but one thing I don't understand is during "dinner's ready" why is the executioner there? Is the undertaker or someone else from helix responsable for scout's kidnapping and murder if his mom? My main theories are either the undertaker didn't have anything to do with the scout and was only concerned with the briefcase (stealing it from helix when its vulnerable), the undertaker was somehow able to get the scout while not being responsable for his mother, or the undertaker created a steady alliance with helix to get the medic where he needed while helix could still attempt to kill off mercenaries, which makes sense with how Stalingrad's briefcase conversation implied it was meant for someone. Another thing I want to touch up on is the chessboard, as even though there's the obvious symbolism of the scout being cornered, I feel like there might be more to it as well. I feel like the pieces possibly also correspond with those behind helix. The king would be Archibald, since he's weak on his own but the kingpin of the operation, the queen posdibly being Stalingrad since he's so powerful, or possibly the executioner since he's in the same room as scout and currently most dangerous, the two rooks could represent whoever isn't representing the queen and possibly someone else as well like the sniper, the mann brothers, etc, and I feel like the bishop could be the medic or undertaker since they're both religious, and not in as direct eyesight as the other pieces as if they're working in the background. Overall good video covering a similarly good film though!

I like to say Emesis Blue and Pootis Engage are two examples of SFM being pushed to its limits but in very different directions. Emesis Blue pushes noir stylization and German expressionism. Pootis Engage pushes the visual stylization specifically replicating anime.

1:29:47 What cyclops could mean here is Helix Technologies themselves, he’s talking about the bigger company perhaps, “our true enemy isn’t red or blue it’s rather those who wear the shroud of darker colors, Archibald could be masking himself in these darker colors” but this is all speculation and could just my own crazy theory

I think the Undertaker is this world's manifestation of Death itself. His ultimate goal is to destroy the respawn machine (and retrieve the stolen Respawn Core), the only thing that can counteract him. It also explains why he's in Medic's nightmares and why they play chess, as doctors are often depicted battling the reaper. The only people who can see or interact with him are those who went through the respawn machine as they've died before. He uses the Medic as a pawn, bringing him back multiple times until his mission to retrieve the briefcase is done. When ordered to open it, Medic says "I can't, it's not mine." What does open it? The crash that kills him. He also steals a hearse from a cemetery, which might be an attempt at reverse-reverse psychology

(Comment I made under the original Emesis Blue) I've just realised something, maybe a revealing anachronism in the narrative. So, it's been a while since I looked back at Emesis Blue and its theories, so I'm not going to start again with this commentary, but look at the first scene between the Medic and Scout (in the hospital, where the Medic inspects Scout)... Scout has an operation scar on his left ear. But in the scene where the Medic takes Scout home, it's gone. This means that this scene, for some reason, would take place BEFORE Scout's operation, and even before the appointment with the Medic. The same goes for the scene at Scout's house, which would take place before. Neither does he has it when Medic comes to rescue Scout ! It implies that this dialogue in the very beginning with Scout, and in general any scene where he doesn't has this scar, comes before everything that happened in the movie, no..? I don't have all the lore implications any more, but it seems to me... an important detail that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere. P.S : My first theorie would be that the scar he got comes from his kidnapping and unseen torture scene he suffers in the Conagher Slaughterhouse.

What if that failed respawn photo of the person on fire at 1:24:40 was the butcher? I mean it would explain why he is STILL burned after countless respawns. Perhaps because the malfunction even the respawn machine can’t fix it

The rain falling upward made me remember one quote: "One day it started raining, and it didn't quit for four months. We been through every kind of rain there is. Little bitty stingin' rain, and big ol' fat rain, rain that flew in sideways, and sometimes rain even seemed to come straight up from underneath."
