The Darkness Devil | Chainsaw Man Motion Manga 

Remember, kids: You're not afraid of being alone in the dark, you're afraid of _not_ being alone in the dark.

Lots of people thought the "Makima is watching..." line was scary, but that "We're being watched by a dangerous devil. Far beyond here... The devils with the names of the primal fears are watching us..." had me way more shook. Like damn. The oldest devils in existence, and they're all looking directly at you.

The astronaut prayer shot is still one of the coolest panels I've seen in manga. Love how creative this author can be.

Can we just take a second to give props to the violence devil? Bro took a “@#€£#¥$” to the body at point blank range and still came back swinging. Dude would’ve been a menace in the regular world

For those of you who havent actually read the manga, the darkness devil is so strong, it breaks the fourth wall. Its arms make the panels of the manga. It even reaches through the panels.

The amount of hopelessness and despair emanating from the Darkness Devil is just so good omg

The thing with darkness, is that we do not fear it, rather, we fear the unknown that it contains, and I feel that Fujimoto was able to perfectly convey that with how confusing the entire situation was. It felt as though it didn't make any sense at all, just *death*

Man, when the anime gets to this portion, I really can't even fathom how'd they do justice to this whole sequence, so eldritch in nature...

I love it when Anime actually has genuine monsters that you just can't f*ck with, instead of the usual "if shout hard enough and you can punch anything into submission" disposable "Gods".

I think this take on the Darkness Devil's appearance got the point accross that they were all dead before Makima stepped in. More so, Makima only held the darkness devil back, but one wrong move and she could've been completely inmovilized with no chance of getting out. With her contract, the entire population of Japan's the limit, but the way she is closer to death every time she fights back, first only her finger being damaged, but then getting all of her arm folded in a blink before she can use the force on Darkness and finally taking an entire sword to the chest just before they are taken back to the Overworld makes you feel how much of an unstoppable force of nature the Darkness Devil is.

Some cool symbolism i noticed on my 2nd readthrough of csm: 1) there is an ant trail as they are sent to hell, which could represent how powerless amd minute humanity is compared to the devils. 2) darkness' body is comprised of faces, alluding to the common "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil," mantra. In a western lens, this implies an absolving of moral responsibility. Darkness is neither good nor evil, and its body reflects that. On top of that, its design contains nany human figures stacked on top of each other, implying its tyranny and control over humanity 3) the astronauts. They only exist because of humanity's exploration of space, a dark endless abyss. By portraying the astronauts in this manner, darkness shows total dominance over humanity's attempts to overcome their fear of darkness. In addition, the praying hands symbolise how revered darkness is, commanding respect. 4) darkness cuts of their arms initially, because in the dark, you would use your arms to feel the surroundings, and guide you. By cutting their arms, darkness renders them blind to itself. 5) makima touches tolka's head, and commands him to speak. After learning of her true identity, it is clear she is controlling him to speak that. 5) when denji fights darkness, we see lots of faces peering in the background. Their expression could be seen as fearful, a reflection of the darkness as a fear. 6) i believe the frogs represent makima, and her ability to use small animals to spy

2:57 this shoot is actually terrifying if you think about it. Imagine suddenly you see a line of astronauts cut in half right infront of you out of nowhere almost without any context. Something that automatically activates uneasy and creepy feelings. The amount of absurdity and randomness is probably what makes this panel extremely scary imo.

This animation does a good job showing just how terrifying the darkness devil is, probably the best so far outta most darkness devil animations.

"We're being watched by devils far, far stronger than the gun devil. They're trancendent, devils who never once experienced death". I got chills reading that the first time. The fact that the gun devil, a world wide calamity was seen as minuscule compared to these primordial devils was extremely worrying. The darkness devil did a great job showcasing some of the horrors of the primal fears.

Darkness Devil is just so goddamn cool, I don't know how they'll ever top him. Falling has been pretty good but hasn't had nearly the same impact Darkness did for me, that astronaut panel and the panel where the sparks from Denji's chainsaw reveal all the dark souls hollows in the background are fucking iconic. Hope some of the other primals manage to be this amazing.

This is probably the best depiction of an eldritch horror in recent years It has no personality No reasoning No motivation No emotion No logic No explanation Yet there is clearly higher thought in it. It just … is.

when this gets animated, if done well, could be one of the hardest scenes in animation

Galgali really straight up got 10 holes blown through his body effortlessly then still came back for seconds. A true ride or die man.

Something that freaked me out when I first read this, I thought the darkness devil used some sort of ability to detach everyone's arms. It was when the stone devil hunter drew a circle with his blood that I realized the darkness devil hadn't used an "ability". It just effortlessly cut everyone's arms off.

The Darkness Devil's concept is interesting because it can get rid of its victims' hands. In the dark, we typically rely on our hands to navigate, and the idea of losing them adds to the fear. What I mean is, I wouldn't want other parts of my body, like my feet, doing the navigating or touching things in the dark because it's easy to lose balance. With my hands, I can quickly shake off anything that touches me if I'm fortunate.

For those confused, she made the doll devil offer all of himself she did not offer herself. The contract was between the Doll Devil and the Hell devil because Makima touched and had control over the Doll Devil.

Someone said that the astronauts being cut in half and then positioned praying to their severed legs is supposed to a unique insult. Astronauts especially the first ones to venture into space volunteered to explore the unknown or the "darkness of space". The deaths signify that they looked into abyss and it killed them. Them praying like that is a form of forgiveness for commiting the "crime" of exploring the unknown. "When you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back"

this is so great, honestly, the chapters with the darkness devil give me the chills. I can't wait for this part to get animated by MAPPA, i just know they're going to crush it with the animation.

This isn't regular darkness this is...... advanced darkness

i fucking love beings that are transcendal or unimaginably powerful so much so that it is unattainable. the darkness devil really gives you the feeling of "you shouldn't be here but now the place you entered from is gone" vibe.

If done correctly, this can by the most intense and terrifying anime scene since the Eclipse scene of Berserk !

Those praying astronauts the rarest thing I ever seen

The anime is great, but the manga has such a unique vibe in its own medium, and you managed to capture and ENHANCE that very particular feeling. Keep up the work, this is absolutely amazing!!!

What I love about this bit is how panels begin to stop being used in the presence of the Darkness Devil, implying his power transcends the very fabric of the reality. The tone was set the moment a line of astronauts cut in half showed up. The bodies of those who ventured too close to Darkness itself.

This honestly gives me chills. The music, the visuals, the atmosphere, everything. Idk how manga can do this. Chainsaw man truly is a disturbingly beautiful world,

Words cannot say how excited I am to see this whole scene be animated and fully fleshed out in color. The helplessness. The hopelessness, the terror in everyone's eyes knowing everything they do is worthless, yet they still try. I hope this experience ends up being creepy and haunting just like when Makima used her abilities at the shrine in the anime, the eerie music playing in the back while people scream.

So I was doing research into Egyptian gods for making a story and I found Kek/Kauket, the Egyptian God of darkness. I read into it and they also mentioned the Ogdoad of Khmunu, the four frog gods and snake gods of chaos. I don't know if anyone mentioned this before, but I think the Darkness Devil is based on Kek. I don't watch or read the series so I found it really cool. ☠️👍

The Makima sequence did a great job of making her seem terrifying even while outclassed.

astronauts cut in half and praying and the darkness devil standing behind has got to be one of the hardest manga panels ever made.

If the primal fears are the strongest of the devils, it makes me wonder if Darkness was the first ever primal fear. Which is why not even Makima sacrificing her own body to use her special power barely even phases the Darkness devil... it's also freaky how it only arrived to kill them all for the most part, wondering if it really was to capture Makima or if it was simply just bored out of its mind. Also freaky how it is so old that it speaks a language likely long since forgotten, and that holds such power that the simplest words can be used as massive weapons to instantly obliterate anything that hears it.

Fan fact ) "Chainsaw Man" was set in 1997, and 11 astronauts appeared in the movie.This is in line with the number of astronauts who died by 1997. This represents the fear of darkness that even brave men who challenge the darkness of the universe can only pray for

In all of the other videos I’ve watched that are similar to this, the darkness devil’s entrance is much slower and more drawn out, and while that has its merits, the fast pace here only amplifies the fear because you can’t even run away from something like this- you can’t fight it and it’s certainly not looking to negotiate, all you can do is cower in fear and wait to die.

I like how Fujimoto uses dead corpses of Astronauts to symbolize the dark emptiness of space felt by the stranded astronauts.

THIS. THIS was the first chapter that ever made me cry ((due to beam and violence's deaths)) and i was absolutely _hooked_ when makima appeared.

i think we do not talk a lot about how the hell itself looks like... it's not dark. it's not flaming. there's no fire. hell is a wicked place but is also a bright one, as if there's always daylight-not night. when darkness arrives, only then the blackness descend but... otherwise? it's even hard to describe. the thousands of doors floating above them, some limbs scattered on the field of... flowers.... wow. so groestque and suffocating, i love it.

this was easily my favorite part of the whole manga. got chills through the entire hell segment. from "permission to kill myself?" to the praying astronauts to the arms being the panels, to the darkness devil himself and his fight with makima..... so cool.

Can we take a second to appreciate the fact that the thing that stands out the most about this devil is his pitch black cape, it literally stands out against even the darker shades grey in the panels as just being a complete void.

The part that shook me the most was it's design. At first with it's sillhouette i thought it was your average darklord LOTR, Femto, Dark Vader. But it's design is so haunting and grotesque... Really got me thinking about the other primal devils, specially something like the death devil

Now Imagine that this is going to get animated in the future. The thought of makes me so excited and jolly. We have after all waited for ages for the anime announcement.

It's just so scary, it's even scarier than the jumpscares. Just look at all the hopelessness. They were all wishing for something, and then died, that's just some disturbing stuff right there. The two people tried to go and attack the Darkness Devil but then gets killed off immediately. They're all helpless, Stone Devil was crushed, and that one guy who tried to axe kick the Darkness Devil got split in pieces, very dreadful.

The fact this devil never incarnated and never experienced death and could literally solo the chainsaw man verse if everyone in chainsaw verse knew this devil

Imagine this scene being adapt to 80's, 90's gore anime scene that will be so awesome.

The darkness devil is absolutely terrifying, the concept of it, its powers, the design, everything about it terrifying and amazing at the same time. Fujimoto is an absolute master

I wonder how well the studio will animate this. The voice acting, sound effects and animation have to be really dark to convey this level of hopelessness these panels send down your spine.

When the fiend asked for permission to kill itself, that is when you know you are in some serious shit. Probably the strongest Devil we have seen so far and by a ridiculous margin.

love the musics in this, both of them (it feels like it's two parts), just one continuous drone-like sound with really good sound effects to describe the level of hopelessness in this lovecraftian horror.

This will have the sickest introduction in the anime.
