A good dichotomy in this aspect is A'Rou vs both Mei and Jingse. A'Rou *wanted* to have what Ruyi had and she did anything and everything to get it and ended up miserable the entire time and lost everything because she believed her destiny and happiness would be as a nobel woman. This series is a sequel to The Legend of Zhen Huan. After returning to the palace from a time as being a nun, the emperor decides to make Zhen Huan the mother of Hongli so that she can have a higher status in court and can't be looked down on for her return. In this sequel drama, there is no mention of the son she had with the emperor's brother so my guess is he was either written out or perhaps died young and never mentioned.

@@laiszeyap Not exactly, as I understand the first husband was not great either, he was an alcoholic and went to war against an enemy everyone knew was stronger than him putting his wife in danger, the second husband was the leader of the army that defeated and killed the first, he captured his stronghold and thus the princess, he didn't beat or raped her, after all she was Qianlong sister, but he used her as a pawn to force Qianlong to accept him as the new leader of that territory and to do that he asked for the princess hand in marriage, Qianlong accepted because he was broke at the time and he also didn't wanted to start a war thus risking his sister to get killed. She got pregnant after she was married, if I'm not wrong she was married for a few years to the second guy too. So basically, the princess had really bad luck and was forced to marry twice to two assholes, but I don't think she was raped, at least not in the traditional sense of the word.

my theory was that Princess Duanshu's fate (husband killed and the killer-rapist her 2nd husband) was Zhen Huan's karma for what she did to Gao Bin & Gao Xiyue (Imperial Noble Consort Huixian) Gao Bin was the one responsible for Princess Duanshu's (first) marriage, & an enraged Zhen Huan then punished him for it by secretly ordering the imperial physician Qi Ru to slowly weaken Noble Consort thru a subtle prescription (under the pretext that her eventual death was punishment for her crimes in the harem, sanctioned by the Empress)

Because she did terrible things too to get to her current position (in the drama Legend of Zhen Huan). So she thinks that what happened to her daughter is her retribution
