We spend a full day exploring a new trail in David Thompson Country called the Rail Trail. This trail began over 100 years ago when they built a railway into the newly founded town of Nordegg. The mining of coal along the North Saskatchewan River attracted a lot of investors, entrepreneurs & workers alike but this railway was short lived as coal wasn't used as much in the 1950s. The railway was abandoned & by the 1980s it was decommissioned entirely leaving trail enthusiasts using it for recreation. Clearwater County invested time & money into a project that's finally seeing the light of day where the entire 109km railway will be turned into a multi-use trail for everyone to enjoy.
Follow us on this amazing video where we explore the first portion that's currently open of the trail from the town of Nordegg, AB all the way to the Saunders Provincial Recreation Area. We also get the chance to stop by the Beaverdam & Harlech Provincial Recreation areas where camping is available. This currently gives the rail trail 3 usable campgrounds over about half the distance and it's already being used actively by the local riding community.
I would like to thank Clearwater County for inviting me to make a video for them & also a HUGE thank you to Trevor Hayter from eOutdoors.ca who supplied us with eBikes for us to use on the trail for the entire day!
