A three-part series following two foster youths as they age out of Washington State’s extended foster care system.
Corey has been in foster care for 18 of the nearly 21 years of his life. Mykell has been in 10 foster homes since she was baby. Both are about to age out of the foster care system. Corey is collecting furniture in anticipation of securing an apartment. Mykell is attending school and working while navigating the challenges of finding an affordable apartment.

This is SO WRONG. To not give foster kids a good start in life when they age out. I am actually looking into adopting from foster care so I can have opportunity to be a mom and make a home for a child and support them in all ways we humans need. I could not have started college if it weren't for my parents' support. We all need that.

I agree with this comment so much! I couldn't be anywhere I am either had it not been for my parents during that transition from high school to college to adulthood after thatm

I left in 2016 at age 18 from Indiana Foster Care. I was tired of being treated like a 2 year old. On May 12, 2023 I graduated from the University of Southern California.

If it's illegal for landlords to discriminate applicants based on student status who does the student go to to get the landlord in trouble. Did the landlord get in trouble? If so I hope Mykell got at least one month of free rent. I want a update on Mykell and Corey. - Former foster kid

The aging out age should be increased to 25. Most foster children are literally without parents or extended families, and they're usually abused/traumatized within the foster 'care' system itself.

sadly, this is how a lot of kids end up in the system. Not adopted, especially if they’re black.

cant the adults they stay with keep them in their home even if they're not getting paid? that's cruel to turn someone out on the street at 18 or 21 with nothing! they should be ashamed of themselves!

They can't cuz they can lose their license! Every person in a foster home goes through llots of screening and evaluation which deem the home safe for foster child occupancy! Once approved children are then placed! Foster kids have troubled past, they suffer from severe trauma because of physc issues and worst yet it's all in there file so there's no hiding it which makes the foster home unsafe for all minors in care! It's all a mess! The system is grossly flawed. Since at 18 you're legally an adult the system no longer provides for them and all of the protocols of foster care screening applies to the 18 year old CHILD!

This is true, had a scholarship to london university doing physics and philosophy, very strong in academia and care leaver myself I had to drop out of university to recieve housing benefit for a domestic violence shleter and subsequently my own apartment, i had lived with an abusive boyfriend so that i could work and study and paid his rent as the system wouldnt help me with rent even tho because i was studying they were supposed to, they said id invite my abusive ex round when i really just needed somewhere safe to go or would never have met him or stayed; police cant find u housing so if i put i a statement i was going home to his adress waiting for him to be released and did get beat and just end up homeless at times. i stuck at uni the whole time until the i got to the shleter and was basically told i had to drop out of university immediately and ended up in thousands of debt from that. before all that i privately rented wen i could but its hard no guarantor, student statut, working part time or full time compared to a couple both working having to pay extra deposits and sometimes discriminated by your age and inexperience.

Foster care/ the child welfare system creates codependency in many foster children because many of us have experienced unstable, dysfunctional, more times than not abusive homes making us extremely vulnerable. Children are highly impressionable and these years are so significant. Ripping a child away from their biological family is also another trauma added on to our many. And then constantly having to move from home to home, school to school can cause many issues within a developing child. Stability, support and love are lacking within the system. All these factors added together creates codependency in (former) foster children which can be a big challenge in adulthood.

It was illegal what they did, but she could drop one class to make less credits and then she is no longer full time student status. She also dosnst have to tell them that on thr phone at all. She is working bad she has a section 8 voucher and that's all they need to know for their rent to be paid. I'm a section 8 landlord. I accept section8 and I don't care how you come up with your portion if you are working. If you are full voucher, that's even better!

That was hard for Mykell, that she couldn't even apply for an apartment, just because she is a full time student. Just at the end, it is mentioned that that was illegal. But those things probably still happen a lot. For the rest I was thinking: count your blessings, girl! So many young women from around the world would want to change places with you. You are a grown adult and need to take care of yourself. That's only normal. Yes, some young people have it easier, but the majority does not! You get to study and make something out of yourself. You even get the chance of shopping for free. You live in quite a nice city. Learn to be thankful and you have learned a lot. Life lies open for you to construct positively.

First Im not sure people understand Tax Credit Apt. It is based on your income and federal funded usda apts Full time students will not qualify even if you work full time. Those type of rental apt have guidelines and are income based.

You are showing signs of toxic positivity. Just because people would want to trade places with Mykell doesn't mean Mykell deserves to be treated poorly because of them being a former foster kid. Just because she goes to school in a "nice" area does not mean her home is in a "nice" area. Plus since she's looking for a apartment she could be living on the streets or couch surfing. As a former foster youth myself how can we be thankful for things when there's still barriers? Please try not to use toxic positively.
@gardenjoy5223
@gardenjoy5223 2 года назад
@@SelenaN0tGomez Don't act so silly. You are using toxic negativity. Just because we have it hard in some aspects of life, doesn't mean there aren't a lot of good things too. Some people choose to drown themselves in feeling sorry for themselves, like that helps at all. If that's you also, get some serious help.
