This looks a bit too extreme, I'm sure you could get better results by other methods that don't involve hauling through all that snow with much better safety too. Just a thought.
@Kevin-cf8uu

Those types of runs just seem too risky if you ask me. Is there not a better/safer way to get a workout in? It just takes one misstep to roll and ankle and be unable to walk.

I know most people will think I'm a crazy safety guy, but this is a serious suggestion for everyone traveling over scree - especially snow and ice covered scree. Why not wear a light helmet? We all eventually fall, and our heads will never win the battle against rocks. I'm sure anyone that has skied for a long time remembers the advent of helmet adoption on the mountains. Heck, when I started biking in the early 80's helmets were just becoming accepted. I'm not suggesting we wear them very often, just maybe when we're all geared up anyways in the cold and are constantly one step from crushing our cranium. Actually, when it's cold out a helmet feels good just like when we're skiing and biking. Kind of nice to get HOME and hug our loved ones and not bleed out at 13k feet by ourselves!
@over1498
@over1498 Год назад
I think the same when surfing but then decide I’d rather not look like a dork. It’s just a risk/reward thing. I mean, you could wear a helmet when you drive and be 10% safer in the event of a serious accident… but you don’t because reasons. And that sounds like a ridiculous example and I’m sure you all think “I wouldn’t wear a helmet driving that’s ridiculous”. And there ya go, of course you wouldn’t, and that’s my only point

QD On Tuesday 11/29 I made my first attempt at running up Lookout Mt. At three miles I was in the frostbite zone, cold and heavy winds. I quit and have no regrets. I was not prepared enough that day. On Dec. 1st it was 50 degrees and sunny and finished the 5 mile run to the top. Yesterday I ran it again and finished. Lesson learned: Cherry pick your days and locations to get the most out of your workouts. Be flexible. There will be other days. Better days.

I quit the 1st cross country race I ran. Went out way too fast.I think I was 27 at the time. I ran the same race at 46 and did OK. Didn't quit so that was great. I do remember racing a college student at the end. She beat me but still felt good. Only 2 cross country races I have done. I have to say cross country is hard. Much respect and admiration for cross country runners.

I had challenges getting beyond 13.1 miles many many years ago until I learned it's all about fueling. A lot of runners newer to longer distances don't realize fueling is one of the most important considerations once you get to marathon and ultramarathon distances.

QD: 2017, I quit running altogether when they cancelled (forever 😢) a relay I had ran with some friends for the previous four years. Fast forward to 2022. Some of my team wanted to complete two ultras, quietly known as the Idaho 208K when both are finished the same year. We convinced the whole team (only 6 of us) to give it go. I trained about as much as I could stand for 6 months and completed both races, which were 3 weeks apart.

I remember training for the 2018 Brooklyn Half Marathon, a few weeks prior to the race I started out on a ~12mi long run. It was a warmer than average day (for late April in New England), and a couple miles in, my legs felt like garbage. I pushed on, run/walking for another couple miles before throwing in the towel and calling a buddy to come pick me up from the side of the road. First run I had ever just quit partway through. Fast forward a few years to Feb/March 2021 and I was training for my first marathon, and decided to do the same loop. This time, not only did I make it through, but I had a great run and extended it to tack on some extra mileage. Getting it done!

So in college, we had a workout named for a coach my college coach had in the late 90s at Mount Union. it was 4x1600m with 5" rest, pace was "roughly 3k" but we used that as a mere guideline and ran it as 4 separate 1600s and in the last rep, I was dry heaving so bad that I pulled off with 100m to go. My coach made me regret that for the rest of the year. The next year, I came back and averaged 4:49/1600. My best Mount workout I've ever had. Not sure if I could even replicate it today

QD: Absolute dinger of a redemptive run this Spring/Summer. I went up for 1st time on 4000ft vert lake-length run (just below ridgeline) of Wallensee near Zürich. It was last week April, I brought SalomonPulsars with modest lugs up. Huge mistake. As I started to begin running parallel (~13mi), I ran into giant ice snowsheets). When I wasn't slipping and sliding, my legs were going straight through and being cut on the packed snow/ice). Once my phone slid down the slope a couple times (with a gnarly 2000ft drop too close for comfort), I sat back, took some breaths, got very scared about getting stuck up there (not having energy to get back), then felt slightly at ease by the Ibeks bashing heads above me. I turned back, got off the mountain with about 2 hours sunlight to spare, but earned an ice-cut that's scarred, and I vowed to get back in proper summer after last winter's icesheets finally melted). I did just that in July, and I never felt so soaring like superman running that ridgeline the lakelong afternoon! Unbelievable experience will never forget!!!!

QOD: 2019 my first year back to running after a decade hiatus, I ran Smith hill located in Deerfield NY. It is 1 mile from beginning to end and steadily climbs about 500 feet. My first attempt I made it about 1/2 way before breaking down and walking for a bit. I trained hills for a month after that, returned and hammered that climb without having to walk. Though I gave up and gave in to walking the one day, I did not quit and trained hard, returned and beat the hill.
