I miss my Iowan Grandpa I never knew, was electrocuted on grain elevator in 40s. Thx God only lost arms, but your life was saved... you have amazing family!!!
Hi Andy, I’m from darke county and I’ve watched this video multiple times in the past few weeks. September 10th I was in a car accident and lost my right arm, as a 17 year old farm boy you truly are an inspiration for me
Don't let your accident hold you back. I'm sure Andy was delighted to hear that he's helped you. As his family now grieves his sudden passing, maybe you could send them a letter, letting them know how much Andy inspired you to keep going, after losing your arm in the car accident. God Bless and continue to heal you.
Glad you found this resource. Andy is inspiring to all, but he must be especially so to you. I predict that you will "pay it forward" in many ways to many people. I'm glad you shared here. I hope that you have a strong family around you also, like this one. May your confidence and capability equal Andy's. God bless.
i dont understand how 97 dislikes, this man and his family should be admired by us all,, this man isnt like the lazy a$$ bunch hitting the dislike button
(Continued, just submitted an incomplete sentence by accident) No human being would have any genuine reason to dislike anyone’s story. Even if it was a bad one. If anyone has purposely disliked the video then it’s only their loss.
t cply the dislikes come from people who take pride in messing up the you tube algorithm for the advertising money they get, they could care less about the harm they cause, there are also professional haters and trolls that harass others and they have caused some people to commit suicide which is there ultimate goal...the world is full of evil.
Totally agree, I'm wondering if this dislikes were pople thinking streight?? Or was it disliked automatic by a computer? The man is nothing but admiration to me, I'm wonder how this people life sucks!!!!😔 its nonsense to give a dislike nothing but respect for this hard working person!!!!!!!🙋♂️😊👍👍👍👍
I’ve been disabled since 2003 ,and maybe I have a different take on it . It’s such a sad story some people couldn’t thumbs up for that reason , although the aninimity of comments on youtube makes it easy to be a fool . God Bless I for one ,wish to make my lord smile rather than bow his head in shame ! Jmho
I’m proud to have grown up in the same state as Andy, so I can just imagine how proud his parents are to see him plow forward and be resilient the way he has been and never let his injury stop him from being who he wanted to be. I grew up probly 30-40 miles from Andy and I’m 3 years older than he is and grew up farming also. The extremely sad thing is that hearing of these injuries on the farm were a common occurrence unfortunately and this world has lost some extremely good people many years too soon because of these injuries. I remember when I was 8-10 years old and I was in the hospital having my tonsils taken out and back then it was common to be in a day or two for that surgery. Shortly after my surgery, I woke up and they told me I was gonna get a roommate in a bit and when they brought him in and got him setup and settled and opened the curtain between us, I looked over and saw Doug, one of my best friends from school and his family had a big hog & row crop farm 2 miles from us and he and his brother were helping their dad move wagons around and they were getting ready for planting season and skipping the details, he got run over by the tractor who was being driven by his brother. It crushed his leg, hip, arm and some other damage but the doctor said his saving grace was that it was muddy at the time and it pushed him into the mud instead of just crushing him and that’s how he survived. I grew up with several friends that had had severe injuries like this and it was all we knew to do when we got home from the hospital was to figure out a way to move forward and not look back! We are buckeyes, and folks from that area never complain, you just move forward!! I’m proud of you Andy! I’m proud of your entire family for backing you brother!! But that’s a farming family from Ohio and a lot of folks won’t understand but we don’t let things stop us and we are still alive and have to figure out a way to move forward. Thank you for sharing this Andy. I figured it was something like this that happened when I first found your channel but I wasn’t gonna ask cause it wasn’t important, what was important is that your a survivor and you never let it stop you, well done brother!!
@@1982MCI Amen Don Pfeiffer. I grew up in a small Northeast Ohio town. Farm and Amish country. People just helped each other and didn't expect anything in return; they gave freely of their time and talents, or used the barter system. That's what God intended us to do.
@@NoName-mv1mw your exactly right holly. My neighbor and I were talking about that just a few days ago cause he’s from that area as well but we both now live in nc and we helped each other back and forth for a year before we knew each of us were actually from there, lol. But that’s what we are missing everywhere in this country today. Everyone wants to get something for doing the right thing and doing what god intended us to do, help thy neighbor. Take care Holly and be safe out there!! Very nice to meet you by the way!
@@alberteinstein3078 i think so to because he was copying his own unsafe procedure and it cost his son but not him. Thats just how i would feel but it was Gods plan. Rip Andy
I'm thinking they don't feel comfortable putting a like on such a painful sad accident for a little kid. That is what they are stuck on. It does make sence.
You need to understand that hitting the like button is not your interpretation of hitting the like button. Some people are saying they don’t like the situation or they think the like button means they like that Andy had a tragic accident, it isn’t being rude necessarily!
I can only imagine some of the bad thoughts he has, I hope he doesn’t blame himself it can happen at any time on any farm. It’s the best place to raise kids no doubt but also so many things can go wrong in a split second
of course it does not matter what happened, his father will always blame himself, its his little boy and he was there. every father feels this when something happens to their child
This is for Andy's family; We ache for you. He was SO inspirational to thousands of us! So sorry he is no longer walking & working among us any longer! He was my hero! Drew
Amazing story! I also remember a write up of another young man in North Dakota who lost his arms as a senior in high when he got tangled in a feed mill. He managed to get to the house and call the ambulance with his nose on a push button phone. I often wonder how that gentleman is doing. Again I watch closely any of the videos Andy produces. Blessing to he and his family.
@@stevelangland3924 seem to rememver one from readers digest that was true where a kid got caught in a corn picker managed to get on the tractor to the house then drove a pickup to the hospital..had to be in the 80's... The name of the articlr was. The courage of young Mac Scott.
Steve Langland His name is John Thompson and he lives near Minot, ND. His arms were able to be reattached but he didn’t really recover the use of his elbows and hands.
Thanks for the update because I remember following the story on him and the things sort of faded into history. So do you know how he is doing these days?

I just stumbled across the Harmless Farmer RU-vid channel today...I didn't know Andy personally but what I've seen from the videos I've watched he was a good person who learned how to live life a little differently and he also has a great family as well. It's so sad to know that he recently passed away unexpectedly. RIP Andy Detwiler 🕊
Hi Andy! I went to school with you!! I have to say that I never realized how truly amazing you are. You were Andy, our classmate. You would swing so high on the swing set (and jump off high in the air) teeter totter with anyone, run just as fast as anyone else, play the drums in the band, and so on. I don't remember you being treated differently. It was just normal to see you write and do anything with your feet. I had a friend, that went to another school, tell me that they saw a guy jump out of his big truck at the gas station, take his shoe off and pump his gas with his foot. They said it was amazing. I said, "Oh, that's Andy. He's always done things like that." I dont think I comprehended how well you adapted after your accident. You've done way more things than most people with 2 arms. I applaud all that you do! 👏 I dont think I knew the full story of the accident, until now. Thanks for sharing. 😊 You can definitely see the love your family has for one another. ❤ Your humor is on point! A shark bite?!! Lol! Congrats on your channel. 😁 You're an inspiration to so many people! Didn't they make a piece about you on Ripley's Believe it or Not?
At 21yrs old I lost my right arm in a life threatening car crash, i too figured things out & went on with my life. Was emotionally hard cuz was a big loss & change at 21yrs old- and to this day though i have accomplished A LOT- it is an emotional challenge. Im now 46yrs old struggling with a very low point in my life- I've watched a few of your vids & you will never know how they have affected me. You sir are an inspiration even though i know thats not your life intention- but unintentionally you are a big help to me emotionally & i wanted you to know. Lifes not always fair but life is very special & is nice to be alive. God bless.....
Jesus will always help you and never forsake you. He has got me out of jams you could never imagine. Just ask him for help. My life is so much better with him than without him.
@Mr Tee You can be an inspiration without even knowing it. We had a neighbor who lost his right arm when I was growing up. One day he asked me if I wanted to ride in an airplane with him, I didn't think anything of it and said heck yeah. Little did I know he had his pilots license and access to a 2 seater prop plane. When we got ready to go he had me get in the pilots seat while he got into the copilot's seat, I didn't quite understand but figured it out (due to his right arm being gone to control trottle and what not). He let me take the controls (after being airborne), wow, the feeling/the view. I will never forget, It's the only time I have ever flown still to this day(30+yrs ago). I still want to get my pilots license because of this. He also had a motorcycle he rode around, went hunting/fishing as well. You just never know, the small things make the biggest impact on some people.
Wow. This guy is extremely inspiring. He asked once about his arm in the hospital and never mentioned it again. Immediately did what he had to, no complaining and survival mode. If only all American were that way. That's all I have to say.
Thanks for sharing your story. I was in a car accident in 1985 at three-years-old and am a quadriplegic. I have all four limbs, but have no use of them. Living in a small town in Iowa, I also had to teach myself to do things and rely on my family and community. Keep up the great videos and I hope to do the same as you with helping others learn.
We know an 8 year-old who was born without arms. He is an INCREDIBLE child and puts "able-bodied" people to shame. I say "able-bodied" kinda "tongue in cheek" bc he does with ease what they struggle to do - JUST LIKE YOU DO! Thanks so much for sharing your story!
I thought your story was awesome before, but after seeing this your off the chart. Thank you for letting us this deep into your life. Your family is great.
any asshat that dislikes this video has no emotions to handle to begin with ! LOL They are most likely just internet assholes that like to dislike everything just to be different.....
Remember there is a difference between growing up handicapped and becoming handicapped. He has honed theses skills because he had too through out the better part of his life. Also his father had money which trust me that helps more than most.
Exactly bro thank you 🙏🏼 the shit irritates tf out of me that and young individuals standing on every street and corner across America holding a sign asking for peoples hard earned money like they aren’t able to work also
My 16 year old was in very bad accident 10 years ago. And it is so painful that I can’t talk about it. I admire your mom for telling us the story, she’s a strong person. I was already crying before she even started telling the story 🥺😥. Thank you because I know as time passes I’ll be strong like your mom and one day tell my story.
i work at a Children’s hospital….and it’s a pediatric trauma center, with a pediatric intensive care, what we can do now is amazing….i feel for you because it just wasn’t possible back then. Kudos for contributing to society, i’ve never watched this channel…it just came into my feed, my condolences to this whole family, he seems like was a wonderful person.🙏🏻
Harmless farmer I turned 60 yrs old in March of 2019 in 1964 I was hit by a car when I was 4 and I thank God every single day that I'm able to get up since then I've had 3 heartattacks and I'm sleepy all the time But sir God does do miracles. So God Bless you.
When I was 4 I got hit by a car while riding my big wheel with my twin brother on his behind me in my front yard. I remember saying to him "its okay to go on the sidewalk now" and thats when I got hit. My dad was out mowing the lawn and my mom saw it happen from the front porch. Long story short and taking out a lot of the content I had 157 stitches in my head, damaged vertabre in my neck which still causes me pain and stiffness in my neck daily, broken right foot so sever I had to learn to walk again and I apparently still walk with a limp to this day though I don't know it and had bad short term memory from the accident. Had to see a psychiatrist until I was 18 to work on the short term memory which is pretty good now....forget words sometimes and have to think about what it is and forget math and my spelling suffers a little but over all it turned out all okay. It's my first memory that accident, I don't remember anything before it. Remember singing old mcdonald had a farm in my moms lap to the hospital while she held my skull together, the docs tearing off my cloths and me saying no to it. To my whole stay at the hospital (bro stole my juice box lol) and recovery. I am doing good being an HVAC installer, got a wife and a child and couldn't be more happy. The way I see it is shit happened but i'm still around to enjoy life. I'm sure you all think the same way, i'm glad to see that you are making the best of your life and you have a great wife and family to care for and you get to still work hard and see the fruits of your labor pay off! Keep on trucking harmless farmer, i'm rooting for ya!
So many people always look at the bad side of everything. Since I have started doing youtube, its really made me realize that things, Really could be worse. Its all about attitude and the will to live. Sure, nothing is ever going to be perfect, but this is life. Life isn't perfect.I try to find the good things in life, something everyone needs to do more of. Thanks for telling me you story. Its very evident that you have the attitude, and will to live!. Thanks for watching
Genuinely, this man deserves a statute. We lost this tradition but this is prime example of someone who should be remembered long after he has left us. His life story is an extremely valuable lesson that can be learned by everyone. His attitude and work ethic can show people that you should never let anything get in your way
I only found this channel due to your recent video about Andy's passing popping into my feed, finally. Which is very strange considering I watch a lot of farming videos, stupid RU-vid suppression of "wrong think". I wanted to let you know that seeing this story brought back a childhood memory of when I was around 8 or 9, I a little older than Andy was. I remembered my grandfather and I reading about this story in the Indianapolis Star or was it Tribune here in Indiana. I grew up in Park County Indiana which is a huge farming community or at least it used to be. I also remember feeling incredibly sad and sorry for Andy. I was a kid then and I know now Andy would have never wanted that. My grandfather owned his own garage so I grew up working on and around farm equipment so but by the Grace of God it could have happened to me. If it had I can't imagine myself growing up to be half the man Andy was and don't think I have accomplished that even with both arms. I'm so sorry for your loss of such an amazing man. I still live in West Central Indiana and I'm not sure what part of Ohio you're in but if you ever need help with anything I'm still capable of doing reach out. I'm no stranger to tractors and equipment with a few hundred thousand miles behind the wheel of a big rig... God Bless...
There is a young man 15years old in my area. He's having trouble adapting to working on stuff with his arms. He has 10% left and right. Your video's are helping him!! Thanks for your time! Thanks for your story!
An inspiration to all and hope for the young man. Just think, 15 years ago RU-vid did not exist, Andy has a story and a plat form to reach out to others.
I've been a paramedic for 32 years and have seen some really tragic events. Your story is something I'll share with my colleagues and future students. Once they can see the positive side of tragedy, maybe they'll work harder to have a positive outlook for those victims. You should be proud of your awesome family and community, they are a model for the rest of us.
A guy from my church shared this video with me. You are an inspiration.Young people need to hear your story. Too many quitters in this world, too many complainers. Your story speaks of adaptation and perseverance. Thanks for sharing your story with us. God bless you and your family.
This is s sad to watch knowing he has passed. This man was inspirational!! God needed another angel by his side!! He is definitely walking with the lord now!
While I agree with you, not every farmer nor every farming family sacrifices loss of limbs. I watch this next generation of farmers coming on now though and to be honest, they have never sacrificed very much. Subsidies, inheritance and such has made it a lot easier for the young farmers. I rarely hear a farmer under age 30 even mention their grandpa's old 4010 or barely surviving the early 80s when so many farmers lost their farms. Rain on the scarecrow.
@@shawnb789 In 2017, 416 farmers and farm workers died from a work-related injury, resulting in a fatality rate of 20.4 deaths per 100,000 workers. Transportation incidents, which include tractor overturns were the leading cause of death for these farmers and farm workers.
@@samgarofalo2461 like I said, I agree with you but the number really isn't that significant. There are a lot of dangerous jobs out there. If you really want to talk about major sacrifice, military families lead that my friend. Not trying to piss ya off, but in my area we have a lot of very arrogant farmers who act like world owes them something. We may owe their grandpa's something but really not them. Have a good day
@@samgarofalo2461 I'd also add that I think it's remarkable what this family in the video has overcome. I wasn't trying to take anything away from their story. It is an awesome one.
I am a disabled army veteran. I stayed home to raise my kids. I ran a part time small buisness. My wife and I chose it this way. After they all graduated high school I wanted go back to work. I took a job at a local auto parts store in 2016. Early this year I was offered my own store to run. In the interview they asked why do you work when you dont have to. My answer was why would I not? I can so I will. Some people get it some dont. You understand what i meant. Love these videos.
When a man is quiet, he is dealing with himself. Oh how I know. A father, a real Dad is the hardest person alive on himself. May God give us all peace and help us to carry our burdens gracefully!
Despite the tragic accident, his human spirit and family support are nothing short of amazing. Most of us are simply lazy and unappreciative of our mobility.
Watching this now, knowing that Andy is in heaven, waiting for his family, and thanking God for the life he had, it became clear, through listening to how the community supported the family, that it's the reason we should try to support small businesses in our local area. It will be those same people who will be there to support you, whenever you need it!
This family is the definition of what America was built on. An incredible family and an incredible man that doesn’t let anything stop him from what he wants to do.
I went to school with a kid that lost both arms in a PTO shaft on an auger, this was in the late 80's and his arms were reattached. Farms and farming is dangerous. My hats off to you Andy, you have persevered where others would quit.
I remember when that happened. My family has friends that used top live in West Liberty & we happened to be there at their house when the call came through to all the local churches about your accident. You're a tough cookie! Most people would have given up & had everybody around them do everything for them. I've actually seen you in Labor Day parades in West LIberty driving your tractor. Love your videos!
I'm just sitting here listening to how it happened and can't fathom how traumatic it was for everyone as it was unfolding. Your dad is very strong man and you are too. What a story and how you are dealing with life now is incredibly inspiring. Thanks for answering some of the questions and please tell your family thank you too. I'm sharing this as soon as I finish it.
I want to thank you for showing people in the world that nothing is impossible. You are a true inspiration to people! Thank you for sharing your story.
Just heard Andy has passed. A sad day. Andy bought my Brother in Laws tractor. I enjoyed his videos. God Rest his Soul in Heaven. God Bless his family.
Andy i just watched this. I grew up on a dairy farm with 350 cows and 200 goats. I wanted to tell you i lost my left arm in a feed grinder when i was 9 years old. It was in Feb,1969. I was in the hospital 10 days. I have about 4" left on my left arm. After the 10 days i went home and jumped on the tractor took the grinder and feed the cows. Im 62 and retired. My story is just like yours but so so so glad it was one arm. God bless you!!! Andy keep pushing.
Brings tears to my eyes every time I watch this video, not because of the accident but because of the family closeness. I watch these videos when these strokes I had get me down and I bet there's 1 million other people doing the same . Thanky Andy.
Honestly I cannot even fathom how your parents felt that day, you can hear it in their voices when they were speaking about what they saw that day. I just want to say thank you for making this video because i feel it can help change people’s attitude for the better in any aspect of life!
I just don't know how you can be a farmer with your feet.I love your videos so much.Your so lucky your alive and can still work and drive and be a regular person.Thank You for inspiring me.
I farmed in the Southeast Logan County area in the 1970s. I remember hearing about the accident. Proud of you Andy, you’ve done well in your life! You have a great family!
I know of a young man that last both legs below the knee and one arm working on a corn picker. He then drove the tractor toward home, got it stuck, then crawled to his pickup and drove himself to the hospital. When the corn picker took off the limbs, it twisted them off, stopping the blood loss from occurring. He still got married about a month later.
Thank you so much for putting this together. A lot of farmers have gone through some hard times and gave up. Some of you know that my daughter got hurt on our farm early this spring and I barely made it through it. Just thank the grace of God. You have an awesome story and a family.

I come home somedays after work and lay in bed and feel like I was in a car wreck. sometimes doing things around the farm I think to my self how would Andy do this.. and I think he would just get it done because that's how it is and it needs done.
