Highlights of the day when Diego Maradona, Michel Platini, and Gary Lineker represented a World XI team at Wembley stadium that faced off against a combined Football League XI, in celebration of the 1987 centenary of the Football League.
This match which would be played just one year after his Hand of God against England, and a mere few months after winning the Scudetto with Napoli, was also Maradona's first encounter with Peter Shilton since that memorable World Cup quarter-final.

Then you probably ought to be more annoyed with Maradona's actions that were giving them good cause to boo him! I was 8 years old when I watched this match. I completely understood the passion behind the sentiment even then. Although I was completely in-awe of him whilst watching this game. To this day I feel love/hate sentiments towards Diego Maradona. I just turned 44 a few days ago and the man fascinates me even now. But his taunts in the media and then his outrageous act of handball still grate with me in equal measure. Juxtaposition! The exhibition match featured here was played in August 1987. A showpiece for the centenary of the Football League that Maradona was paid handsomely for. That's less than 14 months after El Diego, twisted genius that he was, pretty much "single-handedly" (pun intended) cost us a place in the semi-final of the Mexico World Cup '86 with his act of treachery. Yet we still applauded the incredible 2nd goal he managed to score whilst running from the halfway line and dancing around half the England football team in the process. But still we despise him for the punched 1st goal, Malvinist taunts and "Hand of God" bollocks he came out with during the aftermath. To put it in even broader context, this was also less than 6 years after the fascist military junta in Buenos Aires gave their naval forces the order to attack the Falklands Islands. Diego Maradona and the rest of the Argentinian team members and football authorities (both past and present) have continued for the past four decades to make deplorable Malvinist statements and attempted Malvinist publicity stunts which only adds fuel to the fire.

Good thing Pele was teachers pet. Can you imagine what the football world would be like if Pele had Maradonas personality in the 1960s? Forget it! He wouldn’t have made it in their 1958 World Cup squad at 17 yrs old. Doubtful if there would be a Pele on the international stage if he had a cocky extrovert attitude like Maradona. The legendary Garrincha got away with his bad boy antics until it ruined him. But even he didn’t have Maradonas arrogant swagger that challenged authority. Brazil is a multi-racial society but they also have racial discrimination issues. It exists today in Brazil in all its subtle forms and back in the day it was even worse for all black people regardless of who they were and what talent they had.

No. The 1966 goal did not involve any cheating by Hurst. But the English cheated twice, both against Argentina, in the World Cup of 1998 and in that of 2002, when Owen dived and got penalties.

Is there a set time limit in which people should get over something? Set by whom and what length of time? In one situation a player shoots at the goal and thinks the ball had crossed the line, the referee decided it was a goal - no attempt by the player of foul play, just an honest attempt to score a goal. In the other, the player deliberately attmepts to score by means in which he clearly knows is illegal and thus cheating. Just clarification to the nonsense above.

@@e-mot10nshd43 That's possible, but I think it's more likely that being an exhibition match he simply wasn't in a very competitive frame of mind, and wasn't fully concentrated in the way he would be in a proper match. EDIT: Having just watched the first half of the video, the chances he missed weren't easy- certainly the first one was very difficult, racing wide and having to hit it at a sharp angle while running hard slightly away from goal, and a defender covering the goal line. He nevertheless hit the bar. Some chances he had were certainly better, but as I said this was not a serious match so his frame of mind wouldn't be the same in front of goal (his movement, work rate etc. certainly looked good), and also all the opposing keeper and defenders knew him better than any others could. An entertaining match though, and it's great to see great players who wouldn't normally play together. Great too to see Robson tackling Maradona- to loud cheers!- and later scoring. Waddle showing how good he was with those stepovers sending the defender the wrong way, Webb almost lobbing the keeper from close range. Brilliant passing from Maradona and Platini, though it's interesting that Maradona and Lineker didn't work so well together. A young Paulo Futre on show, and Paul McGrath performing impressively at the back.

Lineker did talk about going back to Barcelona the following day (presumably for preseason) and practicing Maradona's magical trick on the Barca training ground (the 13 perfectly vertical kicks inside of three paces that nobody could do more than 3 of). The England vs Rest Of The World match was played on 8th August 1987. I just read that La Liga started on 29th August 1987. Three weeks later. Yes they were indeed but it did not bother him one bit. Diego was far too talented to be affected by crowds booing him. Anyways he had the last laugh as he walked away with £100,000 for playing this match - that was the fee he charged the English League! £100,000 in 1987 for one match!!! @@e-mot10nshd43 I never liked Maradona. Or Pele. I'm not sure exactly why, but I think it's the pompous adulation around them and the general pressured expectation that we are supposed to think of them as great without question. Clearly they were both very good players, but I actually take the view that they were overrated. Maradona in particular was shameless for his gamesmanship (though in his defence, it should be added that diving and what not was a common feature of international football around this time, and if anything, it was the West Germans - as they were then known - who were the worst for it, closely followed by the Italians). Turning to your video, I greatly enjoyed re-watching the moment in this game when Bryan Robson unceremoniously floors the irritating Argentinian dwarf. The stunned reaction of Maradona, as he is put firmly in his place for once, is priceless. Maradona's reputation was rehabilitated, with lots of fawning tributes on news of his death, so it is forgotten just how unpopular he was in this country due to the Hand of God - it was a spectacularly unsportsmanlike way to win a game, so I doubt he was very surprised at the hostile reception. He knew the score and could hardly blame the fans in England for feeling that way. For me, the Hand of God is the one major thing that tarnishes him in the historic rankings of players. On a point of principle, I can't regard him as quite one of the greatest players given that he won a crucial match by unfair means, and I am slightly suspicious of anybody who can overlook such a thing, regardless of national allegiance. Had an England player done a similar thing, I would take the same view.

It is shite the fact that the English fans are booing maradona. Arguably the worlds best footballer at the time of this game was played. Instead of appreciating the skills and magic of the man, they are showing the true class of the English fans. That was also evident at Wimbledon, 2019 men’s final Djokovic vs Federer. Instead of appreciating the spectacle of arguably the best players + Rafa to ever grace a tennis court…they decided to try and get Federer over the line…they purposely yelled things out as Djokovic was half way into his serve. There was a hysteria, much like the hysteria by British, Australian and American mainstream media…constantly painting Djokovic as a villain….the only thing could really cas5 h8m as a villain was that he was Serb and was going to overtake all records and will have to be acknowledged as Tennis’ GOAT. THE BRITS AND YANKS ESPECIALLY BLEED FROM THEIR EYE BALLS AT THE POSSIBILITY THAT A ‘Serb’ could become greatest of all time in their gentleman’s sport. Basically this game is seem like England played against D. Maradona. Look at the English players are aiming at him due to he score against them with the hand of god. During 86 world cup
