This is why you don't talk about people mother, their grandparents, their wife or their kids. You keep it above the belt cos otherwise people are gonna show up and shank you below it, riiiight in that artery in your thigh and walk away as happy as a daisy. The fact that he built a rep that downplayed how intense he is, is actually amazing. Like, people wouldn't believe the rumours unless they ASKED AROUND asked around. That's how you truly fly under the radar 😂
OutKast said back in the day “Run up on Hammer if you want to, he gon beat yo mfn ass” 😂😂😂😂😂 that was my first time even hearing about Hammer being no joke.
@MPPharaoh Came here to post this. If I remember correctly, it was one of those VH1 shows titled something like "Remember the 90s" and they'd have current acts on to discuss old music videos. This was around the time of Hey Ya! coming out. It was something to the effect of Andre 3000 started to tell an MC Hammer story, and Big Boi just burst and said "Man run up on Hammer, if you want to. Nah, now run up on Hammer, if you want to", and him & Andre 3000 was just laughing their asses off after that. By the way, same for me. I never knew Hammer was that dude until Outkast said that.
@@Big-ShadyHis man’s talked shit about his mom. He likely targeted search because that’s one of that guys mans. Didn’t pick the black dude likely because of the climate of the US at the time, ofc it’s past the 60s but even today people from that time are alive. MC Hammer would’ve looked absolutely crazy in the black community going after the only black guy in a group at the time then… unless he says something ofc.
I've seen people also recounting, that when Hammer was touring, most of his backup dancers and road crew were guys he hired off his neighborhood. *So by the power of his own generosity and giving back to his people, MC Hammer also would end up creating his own private unit that would protect his integrity at a moments notice.*
In 1987, MC Hammer played at the Charleston WVa Civic Center. I was working in the mall across the street, in a shoe store on the 2nd floor that overlooked the 1st floor. The night of that concert, MC Hammer, all of his dancers, his entourage, and his security team, all came to the mall before the show. I watched the whole crew stroll in, wearing wild 1987 colors and MTV-kind of fashions, as the other workers and shoppers in the mall just stopped in surprise. MC Hammer himself walked with purpose, as some of the dancers bounced around a little. I already liked him, it was sooo cool to see him in person, as it was. They all went up to the food court for dinner. There were seriously at least 20 people in his group. It was awesome. MC Hammer's maybe first concert there.
But, like, MC was going to have someone murdered because that man responded to MC's diss track against them with their own and mentioned MC's mum. I don't care how many people he hired from his neighbourhood - there just nothing in this mess to be proud of. This is pathetic. What weak brittle men. I always liked MC up until now - but I can't be having with feeble jumpy men - makes me want to vomit.
My cousin calls it the “Hammer Rule” he said “The rappers that are the biggest gangstas don’t need to rap about how gangsta they are”…this can also be applied to guys like Kendrick Lamar who may not tout their association to that life but in an instant can mobilize 50 dudes to run up on you!
I once sat next/across to the left from Hammer on a flight from LA to San Jose Ca during his new record label signing. I was in a punk band that was doing really well and I struck up a conversation with him. Nice guy, articulate and knowledgeable about all things music. He almost predicted the rise of the Nu Metal scene that was about to take off. Had some inside knowledgeable stuff on the industry. Even mentioned some of the famous bands to look out for. We didn't have camera phones or anything back then, wish we did.
MC Serch used to make my Dad sandwiches at the deli. He'd go "I'm gonna be a famous rapper one day, and I'm gonna be outta here" and my Dad and his friends would laugh and go "Yeah, sure you are." Then all of a sudden, one day, they go to the deli, and he's not there, and they're hearing him on the radio Lol!
Pretty crazy to present yourself as this family friendly hip-hop guy, Saturday Morning Cartoon, Pepsi ads, Taco Bell ads, and then secretly be for the streets. Honestly pretty badass.
I think I speak for us all when I say, MC Hammer’s mother is a very classy and respectable lady and we should all try to be more like her. A true woman of highest dignity.
Redman talks about that somewhere in his jokey way. But he said don’t mess with Hammer as he put on his whole city and had basically an Army at his disposal anytime.
My favorite Hammer story is still when Ice Cube dissed him. Hammer and his entourage were staying at a Sheraton in LA. A cashier from Roscoe's calls Hammer and tells him that Cube is at the restaurant, and being kind of an asshole at that. Hammer briefs the troops, they get to their vehicles, and do a "thunder run" down the 101 freeway to the restaurant. Hammer orders his entourage to surround the restaurant just in case Cube tries to make a run for it. Hammer simply tells Ice Cube that if he ever thought of dissing him again, his safety would not be guaranteed.
It wasn’t even just the Crips…Hammer was loved by a lot of dudes in Oakland…he grew up with the guys who ran everything and he was their lil bro who made good…and he put a lot of them on and fed a lot of their families!
Funny Story: In addition to the Samoans, Hammer was another person that put the fear of God into him. When Hammer wanted out of his Deathrow Records contract, Suge’s attitude was, “Okay…you’re released, anything else you would like ? _Anything_ ? “ Hammer might as well have “Sosé” after his name.
I love your story telling style. Look, I’m an old white lady who’s not into rap music and knows vey little about it (though I do know who MC Hammer is). Few things in this story: rappers, Crips, music industry etc… are areas of interest to me. But I was totally into your story and even listened twice. A sure sign of a great storyteller! ✌️❤
@@smithynoir9980 Its the zenith problem, the higher you are the more enemies you tend to have, the more enemies you have the harsher you have to handle any slight. Being soft on one person means everyone can now do the same thing they did, otherwise your reputation takes a hit. Its even true in Copyright law, if you dont religiously defend against any copyright infringement you discover, the court says "guess you dont really care", and revokes your copyright.
@GrimlyYours well, he's in his mid 60s at this point. Not really sure who's gonna be intimidated of him at this point. Sure he could throw money at it but that doesn't make him scary. Jeff bezos could throw more money af making you go away then a one hit wonder from the 80s. No one is afraid of Jeff bezos.
@@jishani1i think people that actually is a threat to bezos probably is scared of him. Also, someone that was around many powerful people, super rich tend to use other means to fuck with people. Why commit crimes when you can literally take everything someone else built ? As an example: ive seen a governor that had problems with someone that was a rival of a parent of mine. This governor, instead of killing or hurting his rival just passed a law to fuck with the business of said rival once the governor mandate ended and he was ellected as senator. I wish i could be more specific about what went down to give credibility but im talking about someone that’s a minister of a country now and id rather not talk about it.
Turns out Hammer Time is like when a videogame level starts running out of time and everything gets intense and difficult. ...Except, it's not Hammer that's running out of time in this analogy.
Bro was certified street, how tf else you gonna walk around with pants like that in Oakland and not catch shots Jokes aside dude has donated millions to Oakland public schools and kept giving even during his bankruptcy. the bay loves Hammer and he’s a real one
I never knew Hammer went this hard. I talked to him a few times about technology and he’s extremely knowledgeable about really deep esoteric topics like machine learning and VR. I’m glad I never got on his bad side and all we did was talking about computers 😅
@@CGoody564 Hammer also walked away from Death Row Records and Suge Knight…unscathed. In addition to The Boo Yah Tribe (You do not mess with Samoans) Suge was also afraid of Hammer
The pants threw us off. Cut us some slack it was 1991 and people didn't wear gold lamé like that back then 😂 It was a gay club outfit. (Hammer if you see this, I don't mean it. I've changed my mind since then!)
Im almost fifty and didnt know hammer was that hard until today.thank you, now ive been stuck for three hours on a hammer history lesson.did you know chevy chase was a big reason for arsenios cancelation?the past is intricate.
Yep, an idiot for sure. I'm sure he was thinking, where are all these people that he wasted his money on go when he was broke. Nobody knows you when you're broke.
Just because he filed BK, doesn't mean he was broke. There's ways to make money look like it went away or gone, but really didn't. Hammer was no brokie, nor was he an idiot.
@@Skq-p8p It made sense to over 100 people. commenting in here like you're the joke police. tf you gonna do about the comment? nothing. go live your life. As if i gotta explain a joke to a moron
@@Skq-p8pNah, the joke did make sense regardless of the actual reason he got the name. I'd assumed that his off stage nickname was an indicator that he was willing to beat you down, whereas his stage name had a story you could tell the press.
I had the pleasure of briefly meeting MC Hammer while bouncing at a club in SF. He was very gracious with his time, shaking hands and taking pictures with just about everyone that asked. Great guy. Bay Area legend.
That album actually is good as fuck, it’s just he couldn’t make his actual cred come across to the public since they still had (and have) the perception he’s soft as hell and kid stuff, and for a while he liked that (sold a shit ton of records and merch) until it was too late
That's not why, it's more because he got overexposed that was about the time that he got his animated series and at that time there was a cap of sorts on how commercial you could be and still have any credibility. If you layer that on top of the fact that he's already gained a following by being a bit more upbeat and positive and that's just not going to work. Most of what this video talks about is the result of just being in, very, very good with a community that's used to having to take matters into their own hands. It wouldn't surprise me if somebody else took offense to people screwing with him and he just played along to not rile anybody up.
I remember this story!! It's been known for YEARS that Hammer is not the one to eff with. Too Short said in an interview that Hammer is a street dude with strong street connections and you just don't fxck with that dude. Gives new meaning to Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em!
My takeaway from this story, aside that the hammer is scary. I don't personally believe that MC Serch was EVER at risk of being hurt, or killed. Their entire experience in California felt extremely setup. Obviously the people Hammer had sent after them were experts, knew where they'd be more or less at all times. But they were also clearly ONLY trying to scare them. From the mall, where they showed up, showing signs. To chasing them all the way to the air port. Sure, if left alone and without protection there isn't much doubt that they might've roughed up Serch, but the whole event sounds more like a huge stunt to scare them out of California more than any thing.
Am i the only one who finds it insane that grown up people look up to people who hire gang members to intimidate people because of verbal insults? I am still waiting on people to start discussing Thomas Sowell en masse...
Thank you! Killing someone over what they said in a song is...wow. Lord, help him. Ironically I was originally searching for his song Pray because it popped in my head. Then I run up on this! Wow.
Third base’s label managed to get them some protections during their cali trip by giving the seats next to MJ to the mobs head for the American Music Awards show 🏆in addition to protection fees. Otherwise third base will never get out alive. MJ is respected everywhere 🕺
To be fair to Third Base, Hammer started it. After that it’s their (mostly Search’s) fault for not stopping after the fifth near miss (never mind the first 4). Tbh I would’ve asked for a different vehicle to Search and made it known on the station beforehand.
Hammer. That's the man right there. He too Legit....just like Kendrick. I remember Redman's account of this. The way he said "yes SIR!" Hammer really said "that oakland show gon' be your last stop". He really like that. 😂👏🏽
Wow I thought mc Hammer was cool till I heard this. It's hilarious how pissy rappers get, like any slight affront to their massive ego has to be met with him calling his little gang buddies to end a dudes life cuz a dude responded to shit he started. What a child
I think you may have got some of these wrong. From what I recall that redman incident happened way before Red and Meth was a group and I think 3rd bass dissed hammer first
I'm happy Hammer checked all these dudes, especially 3rd Bass. MC Serch really tried to dance battle Hammer 🤦🏿♂️🤦🏿♂️🤦🏿♂️ Hammer was the real gangsta on Death Row Records.
