Actually, it was not a -61 but a -43. However in service, the DC-8 typically cruised from Mach .78 to .80

So this story has actually never been verified as there is no documentation we can find to prove it, but growing up I had a family friend who used to fly the DC-8 and later 747 for CP Air. He had claimed that during a flight on some sort of training course, he and his crew had broken the sound barrier in a DC-8. Allegedly he received major disciplinary action for doing so. After CP became Canadian Airlines he went on to fly the DC-10 and remained there for the rest of his career
