Sometimes, I think the recent (last ten years) of exceptional incompetence by NFL referees is an intentional ploy by the referees union to use as a negotiating tactic for their desire to make referees full time NFL employees rather than seasons employees. NFL officials don't need to be full time. They don't need "more hours." They are paid $200K+ per year. They do not need to have another job. They can do self-improvement training on their own in the off season, just like athletes do their own training in the off season when they're not getting paid for it.

I wanna know how a multi-billion dollar sport cant develope advanced technology. Still have refs but have them doing less. We are asking a lot of them so how about invest in making the game better...

No one expects refs to be perfect on every single play. But they need to be able to correct their calls/penalties on the field when instant replay shows they were clearly wrong. Bottom line - refs need to be held accountable.

I spent a lot of years refereeing at lower levels, and I am often shocked at the unprofessionalism of the NFL official. Being out of position, not actually seeing the ball, allowing play after the whistle, illogical calls, inability to maintain order or consistency, no concept of causality, and sometimes not knowing their own rules, these are some of the worst issues the officials themselves cause. The NFL compounds this with league "rule focus" to try and pay more attention to an area of previous obvious failure, constantly changing rules, part-time employees, and as was mentioned, bad training.

Professional Football is my religion. I have my favorite team that I root for and watch fanatically, and expecting them win a Super Bowl year in and year out. With that said, I still watch every football game regardless of who is playing. I spend a small fortune every single year, rather I'm shelling out over $200 for NFL Sunday Ticket, $100's of dollars for jerseys, or $100's of dollars on trivial things such as coasters. I am in total agreement with your critic of the NFL's officiating. It's a total joke. I vividly remember watching the 2002 NBA Western Conference Finals between the Sacramento Kings and L.A. Lakers . Anyone who's informed about that infamous series knows what I'm talking about. Everyone watching knew the fix was in, and the better team did not emerge triumphantly. This is important, because at the time, I new in my heart and mind that kind of sh*t could never happen, and would never happen, in the NFL. Unfortunately, from what I've witnessed over the last 18 years, I no longer feel that way about the NFL.

Best job in the world to be a ref. You can call games in your favorite team’s favor (your favorite team being the one that paid you), and if you get called out for it, simple! Fine the bastard who spoke the truth!

Today's refs are no worse than they were 40 years ago. It's just now they're under much more scrutiny. There've always been blown calls, but now due to social media the whole world sees the bad calls.. Take a look at one of the worst officiated games ever, when the refs screwed the Cowboys - back in the 1979 Super Bowl. Just 9 years ago the fickle NFL fans gave the officials a standing ovation after 2 weeks of the replacement refs. You want to go back to those guys?

The problem is the reluctance to overrule the on-field referees. No one is perfect and these players are moving at high speeds. I don't get why they feel as if the on-field refs have to be backed up no matter what.

The best form of training and evaluation of referees is officiating in the minor leagues. Hockey and baseball have plenty of these, football does not. Also, how can anyone expect maximum competence from people who only work once a week? Referees in other sports will work multiple days per week.

I miss the days of referee Red Cashion and his trademark "FIRST DOOOWWWWNNNN!!!!" Seems like when I was a kid watching during the 80's the refs did a good job 90% of the time. I think the real culprit is Roger Goodell and his 'vision' of an NFL that appeals to all sexes in order to rake in the money. It's gotten too big for it's own good. Peyton Manning for new commissioner! I really think the XFL with The Rock at the helm will give the NFL a run for it's money in 2022 if he de-Goodells it.

I'm a rugby referee, and there are a few things that the NFL (and football in general) could learn its ancestor. 1. The Lawbook for Rugby is quite short (it's barely a half-inch thick) and free to the public. Also, proposed law changes are tried out in specific regions/competitions to see if they improve the game. The NFL has a gameday rulebook that is quite long, not publicly available, and continually has significant changes from year to year, without any testing periods. If the NFL had a lighter book, with gradual rule changes, referees would have fewer decisions to make on-the-field, reducing errors. 2. In international rugby, instant replay is similar to the Sky Judge concept, which is called the "TMO" (Television Match Official). Only the referee can call for a TMO review. Also, TMO is only used in two circumstances: a. Determining if a score is legitimate or not b. If the referee should issue a Yellow or Red Card (Yellow Card = 10 min suspension, Red Card = full game suspension). During the review, the TV audience has a feed between the referee and the TMO. The footage the TMO is reviewing is broadcasted to the jumbotron. This system is fully transparent and doesn't disrupt the game's flow. If the NFL adopted these two principles, I guarantee officiating would be better.

Honestly, just toss the refs. Sky judge with every angle is all we need. Why would we take a chance at some bum ass ref changing the course of a teams entire season off of one botched call when we have cameras? Seriously. Maybe one ref on the field to vocalize the rulings on the field but that's it. Idgaf if 20 refs lose their jobs. Think of how much money has been lost due to extremely poor officiating? Screw em lol.

How can you criticize the NFL? Re vamping and improving the referees takes money and will. And since the NFL is a poor nonprofit barely able to make ends meet, it is not going to happen.

Yeah refereeing is an extremely challenging and intense job. It's not easy to do, and it's easy to make a mistake. I think sometimes people expect way too much from the refs. I think people who give all the hate should try to ref some of their local games. It's not easy, and you understand you get no sympathy when the shoes on the other foot. If you expect perfection you need to pay for perfection. Otherwise you can't really expect a missed or even botched call from a ref every once and a while; we're human. Sorry this may be rambling, but as someone who has reffed for around 3 years now it's just easy to criticize when you think things are obvious, when they're not.

I think the XFL did it right. You could see the booth review and hear their conversation. That way, he could make his case clearly. You're not getting it after the fact. That made it a lot easier to accept the calls that they made.
