Hey guys, this is a quick clip to compare the wind interference on the mic signal with no wind protection, with a foam windshield and lastly with a dead cat - I deliberately filmed this in an excessive wind zone to best demonstrate the effect
Hey! My name is Corey and I am coming at you out of Wellington, New Zealand. I am a photo enthusiast & I do some pro work like events & weddings & make videos for fun. I used to paint & sketch but I thought it would be easier to simply snap pictures than to paint them. How wrong was I? This photography lark is a tricky business getting it right, but is an awesome buzz all the same!

Excellent, my vote goes your your Go2 wireless mic with its mini-muff. 😀 however pretty conclusive on the on camera mic. Wind noise is a huge hassle I’ve found with in camera mic pretty much useless the second you go out the door here in NZ.

Hey Chris, yeah it turned out a bit of a moot point in this video with how well the Wireless GO performed in the wind even compared to the Videomic Go II with the dead cat, although I was also quite stunned with how much of the white wind noise the dead cat filtered out. I usually only find out my audio is unusable well after the fact which annoys to have to overdub more clear audio back in or bin the whole clip.

Foam protectors are simply pop filters not actually wind protection. The foam filter will still vibrate in the wind and pass that into the mike.

Great Video, are all dead cats the same? I use an iPhone for recording videos for you tube and wind noise can be a big problem, the microphone that I currently use is a ANDYCINE M1 Pro Video Microphone Compact Camera Mount Shotgun Mic With Input/Out, but still get wind noise using the deadcat all with the foam cover inside, any ideas

I love the comparison and just subscribed! I've been doing tests on a number of mics, and a lot of the time I think the sound is more natural with the furry, and I'm actually using them INDOORS in many situations!!

Hey thanks so much, yeah I agree I think it takes the top sharp end off a bit indoors as well, I only really notice bad audio when it’s next to good audio but it does help to have an awareness of how it could be better, I’m an amateur so still a lot to learn! I had been told I should never use a FURRY windscreen indoors, but after testing a lot of my lavalier clip-on mics with the Comica CVM-MF1 furry (for lav mics) it actually made the echo/reverb of the room less (perhaps because the random pattern of the furry rejects the secondary noise bounce better?)

Placing the mic inside a blimp equipped with fur would reduce wind noise more.

True however I'd still go for the Rode Go2 or equivalent because that gives a pretty good result and doesn't require extra hands. If you're a one man band as so many are these days then that is the way to go. And as long as you can put the BG noise in context it won't be as distracting as something that isn't. Show the beach show the ocean show the traffic and if it makes sense the audience won't bat an eye.

@@mmtees You could think of this as having 2 different options: 1. The Rode Wireless Go II (with the little furry windscreen) for when you want a LITTLE BIT of background noise, but still can hear the voice, or 2. the Rode Go II (mini shotgun mic with "deadcat" furry) for when you want MORE background noise (the sound of the waves and beach) but also a clear voice...

not sure my WS12 is not protecting wind ..I tested many times in my sea beach vlogs and it is not protecting ...can some body help if I got a defective one ...

Hmm yeah it’s not the best but it’s better than using no wind deterrence at all. I think because of the foam inside the fluff it does not break up all of the wind before it reaches the mic

@@TheOtherPhotoGuy I really upset being a product of RODE it is not protecting normal wind of sea beach ..my entire vlog got wasted ..I tested with cheap dead cat of3 dollar and it protected my small mic efficiently ...it is not protecting the basic wind flow ...I was searching video if some body have tested the rode ws12 but I didnt find any video .its bad product and now my micvid 2 is wastage as it is not able to handle the wind of care town ..I tested with a home fan and it failed ...

@@RoamingDevi yeah that is disappointing. I would try to use other measures also like turn your back to the wind and make sure mic is not pointing toward the wind, also coastal beach winds can be pretty brisk, maybe even find a shelter out of frame where you can still be at the beach but also have a physical barrier to the wind. I’m sure Rode will like to hear your thoughts you can get them on info@rode.com
