I just bought these. An absolutely incredible set of wide variety of sounds! I was interested in the background of who made these sounds, and here I am. 🥰
THANKS! I've been distracted about my passions for about 40 years, now i'm 56 and consider not late to begin... i've got a project of creating audiovisual content but focusing a little bit more on audio... You helped to increase my motivation... again THANKS A LOT from Argentina!
Ah that is so cool! Yes the Zoom F6 is a great field recorder and super cool that you enjoy it the same then I do. Lets make sure someday we are on a recording session together.
Oh yes I already requested the recorder and hope that it arrives. But shipping to Iceland can take a while. Still waiting for a package since over a month.
Awesome message. Just bought myself a Tascam DR-05X to start recording sounds for my electronic tunes I make. This is really what I need to see to get myself out of a slump of drinking heavily 3-4 times a week and struggling to make my music because often I'm recovering from a big night out. Thank you, this is very uplifting, and I totally agree with what you say about passion.
I always carry a Zoom H1 in my backpack. It's a little beast and small so it is always with me. I first seen it being used to record Foley sounds for the Blade Runner 2049 movie in one of their behind the scenes videos. Yep that's right, the sound designers used it in the opening sequence of that movie to record the water boiling on the stove. The moment I seen the ZOOM logo I googled it and found one at my local store... I never ran so quick to get it. Since then I use it for work and side projects. Love your channel and great video :)
I hardly leave comments but this video is genuinely inspiring and it empowers small beginner creators like me. I do have a Zoom H1 from a decade ago and would like to use it more now to explore what are my passions in this creative journey and not worry about how to make a living out of it but let it come naturally. Thank you for sharing your story!
Nice video! I just got my H1n recently and am loving playing around with it. I never knew I liked recording sound so much. Question. In your early days when you were getting bird sounds and other outside sounds with your H1, were you using any kind of wind or pop filter, or were you just using the H1 in its birthday suit? I'm finding that it's VERY susceptible to wind/breezes so might need to do something about that :)
Hi Tom. Oh yes I used a windjammer. You have to buy them external. You can go with the Zoom Universal Windjammer what is a little big but works or you checkout Rycote Mini Windjammer For Zoom H1n. That should help. :)
One time I was recording the sounds of boats, and big ships going into, and out of the San Pedro Harbour. I set the recorder on top of a low flat rock, facing the harbour. On the playback, about fifteen or twenty minutes into the recording, I heard the sound of some kind of animal snffing the recorder! I think it might have been a skunk.
I really loved this video. It's a really heartwarming honesty to admit that you have to start with nothing and no experience and build your way up. I'm trying to launch my own project of field recordings, would you have any advise on what equipment to buy or what brands to lean towards?
Hi! Thank you so much for watching and your question. I made a video about the AT 4025 and if you haven’t watched it yet? I talk about this. I wish I would like to have this one, back in the days when I started out with recording.
Just to see true passion in someone is a real pleasure. This was a great presentation and the photos from your travels as well as the video clips just polished it off perfectly. I am a 30 year stock photography veteran and only have a H1N for audio, but now...... well the new adventure begins...... Thank you both for this.
Yo man... I've been a live sound engineer for over 15 years with the military, and definitely consider myself a bit of an audiophile. This video was absolutely awesome. I love your enthusiasm and encouragement. I have slept really well for years using rain noise, and this video is definitely inspiring me to get some field recording gear and go record my own soundscapes to share with other people that want really high quality ambient noise to sleep to, or study, or just have on. The poorly looped recordings just aren't cutting it. And with my knowledge in sound design and audio gear, I think I could do a bang up job! If you had to start all over again, would you go with the Audio Technica stereo mic you spoke about? What's the market like for 3D sound nowadays? Thanks again for sharing this with us. I really enjoyed it! Everything about it is top notch!
Such a great video! Wonderful work Libby! Smooth camera work, interesting wide and closeup shots, and some fun cinematic sound effects. Fun titles and graphics too! Thanks to both of you for putting this inspiring retrospective together.
Nice video and tips please next time do not keep on recording, your voice, music and crenaky sounds over and over while you are talking is really noisy and persistent!
I stumbled across your channel just now. I’ve always been obsessed with recording sounds, and you have inspired me to further this passion of recording sounds.
your videos are a source of inspiration. I'd like to ask you for advice. if you want to start building my own database, a personal sound library, can you suggest me how to organize the library, name the files, create a sheet containing all the information on the audio recording (place, equipment) to locate the files etc. ? having already dealt with all this, can you suggest the choice that was best for you? thank you very much
Hi Giancarlo! Thank you so much for watching and professionals using Soundminer to deal with all the metadata. I use Soundly to write my metadata, organize my files and also search for it. Its a powerful application so feel free to check it out. getsoundly.com/ I work with Soundly almost 3 years now and have thousands of my own recordings inside the cloud. Here is a coupon code for you if you like to check out the Pro Version. If you download the application use the code:free2usesounds. I hope it helps you and if not you can cancel anytime.
Field recording is one of the most wonderful things because you go outside and suddenly become SO MUCH MORE aware of your environment. I have been doing this since i had a little Cassette recorder with stereo mics and at first i only did it to have my own Foley Sounds for my own audio- and film projects. But it really has an effect on you too. In 2009 i had gotten a little second hand MiniDisc walkman from Sony and took it everywhere i went and recorded things with a little T.Bone ST40 stereo mic and often listened to these recordings when i was laying in bed. I loved that and also the process of recording any kind of environment. You hear things differently and it almost becomes an out of body experience where time somehow doesn't exist anymore. The best thing is when you turn these recordings into an audio story and basically going on a journey with your eyes closed and only with your ears.
To be fair, the Zoom H1N is a good field recorder. I sold my original H1 and bought a H5. I ended up buying my wife a H1N as she wanted a recorder/pc mic/video mic and the H1N ticked all the boxes for her needs. Love your content.
Thanks for this video...very inspirational...makes me nearly want to quit my day job and become a sound recordist!! The first time I tried to record a sound effect it was of a bunch of chickens...we went to a farm..recorded the sounds..drove home....played it back and discovered horrible pops and wind noise! I thus discovered that wind protection was a thing...and so was using headphones to monitor! Well done...I love the story...and that 'learn as you go' approach!
Hey! I really feel like audio is really overlooked ... still. Your passion is really motivating. Thanks and keep enjoying what you re doing. Thanks for sharing your story!
Hi! After 3 years, do you still recommend H1n to beginners? Isn't there any newer alternative out there? In a review I saw the following points about H1n, what do you think about them? - The firmware update (to be downloaded from the Zoom homepage) is an older version than the version already installed in the device (!). - The often criticised rattling of the volume buttons on the sides has still not been resolved. - The hand-touch noise attenuation is also missing (you can hear every smallest finger tapper. If possible, you should place the part on a sative or lay it down - although it is referred to as a “handheld”).
What a great story Sir! Based on your video on the AudioTechnica BP4025 , I've just order that mic to compliment my BP4029 stereo shotgun. Like you I have a passion , which is video and good quality sound, which makes all the difference! I shoot a lot of railroad related footage, so the sounds can be challenging , but very rewarding when you capture all the details. Thanks for sharing your passion with us, it is inspiring and I will be taking the 4025 out in the field to capture some great sounds! Cheers Gregg.
Thanks for the inspiration. I got an Olympus sound recorder and am still using it to record birds sounds. Now I like to do more videos of wildlife but because of the noise from my Len's Auto focus, I recently bought a Rode video mic to do a better wildlife sound recording rather than the camera's built-in microphone.
Liebe Grüße. I film at very loud (120+ dB) festivals where it gets hot, wet, a bit rough etc. I'm desperately looking for a better way to record the audio because it's sometimes so loud that the iPhone mic distorts or I need a backup recording method to place somewhere away from the camera, or to talk into. It needs to be light and relatively rugged. Any ideas? Mfg.
Mohon petunjuk sy msh pemula rekaman lapangan seperti merekam hujan, sungai dan suara burung sekarang sy punya zoom h1n untuk meningkatkan kualitas rekaman bagus mana zoom f3/tascam8 atau zoomf6 terimakasih atas perhatianya...salam🇲🇨
I want to do immersive Videos from Motorcycle Motorsport. What Starter Microfon do you recommend for this loud Sounds ? I want to pic up all the small Pops and Bangs on the side of the Track 🙏 Your Video made me hyped thank you !
I'm a beginner videographer and I'm so glad RU-vid algorithm brought me here! Your advice about starting as a beginner gave me much more courage. I also have a Zoom H1n recorder for past 9 years and never really used it. I'm gonna learn how to record video footage with excellent sound captured. Thank you for this video. Subscribed!
Hi, Thanks 👍 I've started recording birdsongs on the little tripod with the Zoom h1n. However, the lead on my Beyerdynamic cans makes noise when I move. So, I'd like to monitor with bluetooth cans. Do you have any ideas? Perhaps a battery bt transmitter, but how to pair it with bt cans 🤔 (I'm rather minimalist, so don't have a laptop... only an ipad and android phone)
first of all: thank you for this kind of video, how you share your passion for field recordings! i have a qustion.. i am listener of an ambient/experimental music, especially the guy who is under the name 'the humble bee' craig tattersall. he is using a lot of field recordings for his production. so.. my qustion is: is it a huge work in post-processing after you record something/sound? what tools you are using for that process?
i love the sounds you are producing. They are very calming. Could you maybe publish asmr videos where only a specific sound can be heard, or maybe a playlist with sounds that go well with each other. I think many people would actually like that.
Brother and Sister, thank you for being you, following your dream, inspired to bring it to life to share with the world. Like you I am obsessed with the sights and sounds of life, in my case I have been recording the sound of the human voice informally through the Olympus USB recorder since 2001. I sense by writing this right now, I will new adding a new podcast or audio channel to our community site soon. Would you mind if I mentioned you as my source of inspiration?
Love the passion in your eyes ;) Can you recomend what kind of mic should I use to create no talking bushcraft videos? It should record the sounds of nature and at the same time the sounds of putting tent, cooking food, etc
Can you recommend a microphone that's good for recording sound in nature, but also blocks the wind well? I also need it to be relatively compact in size. Thanks!
I have quite a bit of free time during the week and not much to do so I thought I'd get some field recording equipment to have a reason to take the train into the wilderness since I already do audio. It would be awesome if I can make bonus money out of this :D
Hi, I'm from Vietnam, Thank you very much for your sharing, can you guide me how to record the sound of falling rain without getting the microphone wet?
Great video thank you. Could I please ask the best setup to use to record the deep rumble of a Harley Davidson while on the bike. i watch a lot of moto vlogs and the sound of the bikes is never properly captured . Thank you ( I already have a sennheiser 416 )
Hello, Google led me to you, I am looking to do nightime recordings of my outdoors, i would like to pick up sounds 500 meter radius or more, sounds like loons from the lake, or owls /frogs crickets/and animals in the night. i would like to mount the mic on my covered porch, and be able to plug it into computer possibly? also what i might need for wind. what are your thoughts?
Hi, thanks for your video, it has been bery inspirational. I am trying to learn as much as I can about sound in general, I have been researching on a good entry level sound recorder, but I have one further complication: I am blind. and I am having a hard time finding a recorder that I can operate with buttons alone, many of them seem to havetactile screens for using them efectively. Can you please recommend a model that would be easy to use for a blind newby?
hi there, im very interested in buying your everything bundle. I just need to know if you host the over 1T of sounds that I can go though to select what I need to download, or if I need to download them all and store them on my own external drive. so il need a new 2T drive :) thanks
" I was looking for a clean sound that i heared once in my childhood and got suddenly inspired :) I remember we were sitting in class writing some very very difficult test and all the kids were calm so i could not hear any breathing around but behind the window glass was only 1 amazing sound with echo flying around the area: tkBm ... tkBm ... tkBm ... tkBm ... Pile Driver hit concrete! 💪 That's how I've become a composer)
I would like to get started with this. I do hobby music for over 10 years so I know a few things about production, mastering etc but I had no idea about the field recording business. Sadly I literally have no money. Do you have any REALLY tight budget euqipment set suggestions?
'just subscribed. Your story is so encouraging, I loved it. I have a zoom H5 and it's been my first great investment when I started making videos. I still have a lot to learn though. Cheers!
just got this recorder and trying to implemented to start vlogging or doing nature videos with the sounds of the recorder. thank you for this! I need to learn a lot
As I know, the D100 has no XLR output but I think they made an adapter for the 50. If you could get your hands on this, it could work but you have to make your research before.
I stumbled onto this site and now it’s one of my favorite RU-vid places to be. I have a collection of recorders. In 2010 took my Tasman DR100 on a trip to Uganda to record choirs. Did a whole CD on children’s choirs with it. It was fantastic. Now I have the Zoom H1n , the H6 and most recently the Q8. Been using these as backup recorders for live events but you have inspired me to do more with my Zoom family. Thanks
I am just starting out with Zoom also. I got a H4N and had for a little less than a week and Guitar Center had they started a sale on H6Pro for a great deal, so I returned it and ordered the H6 Pro. I am expecting it before Nov. 2.2022. Yay!!! Also have the Zoom pencil condenser mics coming too, so plan to get an extension pole. Eventually thinking a shotgun mic SSH-6. Do you use a shotgun mic? What are th mics you use. Also what headphones do you prefer for field work?? I am a visual artist by nature, but beginning to see how they can be used together, and doing meditational audio with Crystal singing bowls. Thank you for this video.
Hi Grace! That's wonderful and we hope you have a lot of fun with your recording device. Well, I think our latest video about our gear gives you an idea. Also the Schoeps DMS vs Sennheiser is a good start.
Thank you for watching and feel free to start recording sound effects in your home. Than go out and record the ambience in the city or village near you. Make sure you get wind protection too!
So glad I found this video. Just thinking about a new project working with sounds, and had no idea with what to start. Now I think I know a bit more thanks to you. ☺️ Marcel I have a question. Everyone talks here about recording devices which is better which don’t, but how about headphones? Do you have any recommendations for good headphones 🎧? Which one are you actually using? 🤔
To record wind sound you need better wind protection. It won’t work with a recorder like this however if you can hide the recorder facing the wind, it works. Also recording wind trough cracks works. Just make sure the wind doesn’t blow right into the microphone capsules.
Oh, I see? too bad. I just want to share practical knowledge by combining your videos, along with the video owner's information. Not the slightest bit of bad faith. Just wanted to make my students understand by giving him the language in the subtitles. I am very sorry. I don't know if this is wrong. Thank you for inspiring.
Enjoyed the video. I've been wanting to make my own ambient recordings for personal enjoyment. I finally broke down and recently bought a Zoom H1n. Just got it delivered today. I have some woods areas with running water to start with. Some great ideas here. Thank you.
Last saturday got my first Zoom H1N as purpose to record different kinds of sounds! :) And also I don't have any knowledge about recording, editing or anything else but gonna learn a lot step by step so I can do something fun with the sounds. This video is amazing, helpful and inspirational! So thank you!!! :)
just falling into this rabbit hole myself, looking for a recorder to record ambient audio in urban and natural environments. I want an accurate representation of the actual sounds, but would like it to feel immersive, so I assume something with a wide soundscape is best. I was looking at the H1N to get started, but it seems like it might be a bit directional as opposed to wide, despite being a good device. What would you suggest looking into instead? At this stage I'm trying to keep the weight and cost reasonable, so a recorder with a adequate built in mic would be nice so I don't need extra mics and cables. Is the Zoom M6 with a MSH-6 Mid-Side Microphone Capsule a reasonable direction to go in? Is there something else I should consider instead? Again, I don't want to get into the world of extra mics and cables and stuff....yet, hahaha. Am I overthinking this? Will the H1N get me a wide enough immersive sound to start off? If you could go back and suggest something to yourself when you started and your budget was around $400USD, what would you do?
