Motive clearly has some ridiculously talented technical wizards. DICE constantly fails to release properly working games with their own Frostbite engine, and many other EA studios seem to struggle with it as well; meanwhile, Motive managed to make a polished Star Wars flight sim, and now they have a 3rd person horror game with a seamless world. I'm impressed.
Frostbite was built on the bones of Renderware, which was created by "Criterion Games"... Guess where some of these guys work now??? MOTIVE... They know their own code... Most at DICE now, don't... 👍
@@Beavernator I had never even made that connection, but you're absolutely right! On a similar subject, word has it that there are quite a few people at Motive that worked at Visceral on the previous Dead Space games (which I'm sure is a big part of why they were so passionate about doing this remake). Here's hoping the studio continues to get free reign from EA to do whatever the hell they want.
@@BucklingSwashes This is true as well that Visceral employees work there... I REALLY hope they do the Tie Fighter PC remake that they wanted to do... I adored that game as a kid...
The original Dead Space did have lockers and containers that mysteriously unlocked later in the game but this was never explained in the story and was obviously done by the devs to spread the loot out for when you had to backtrack. It is a nice touch to add a security clearance system to explain it though.
The only issue is it can result in a death loop but the autosaves are somewhat generous and there is a fix. Other than that one bug, I completely agree.

Remaking games is kind of a lazy cash grab. Okay, less lazy with it being decent, but there's close to no risk, no marketing required like you would need with a new IP.
My hope is that, if it's this good, that it warrants remakes of Dead Space 2 and _especially_ 3, since both that game and its developers got done _dirty_ by EA.
@@Spillow-C 2 was great, 3 was bad but its weapons engineering system was fun to play with, would be interested to see this teams Interpretation of that
the flamethrower is actually so good in the remake - the alt fire can basically 1 shot everything when paired with force gun and/or statis, including the tentacle wall guys
Flamethrower is so goated in the remake, spending 1 fuel to tap it turned more or less every enemy in the game into a oneshot even with an unupgraded pulse rifle, plus it takes care of the wall guardians and swarmers so easily
The fact that I had a hard time differentiating between the OG game and the remake is a testament to how well it's aged. That being said, I'm excited to try out the new content and tweaks they've done to the game on top of the graphical refresh.
Except for his wife or GF, she got aged pretty hard compared to the rest of the crew, this has also happened in the newest TLOU remake, Tess got the aging treatment too
@@gabrielrodriguez4411 she's literally in her late 30s and is going through stress and trauma, that can age you. Also tess is in her late 40s and in a apocalypse that's pretty stressful. Women don't need to look like smooth faced gorgeous super models, shut up
@@nukaberry447 I disagree, I think aging already established characters in remakes just makes no sense. Why not remaster the existing cast from the original game which was already fine looking as it was? Why age them up? Also, telling people to "shut up" is pretty rude, mate. No need to get so defensive about an opinion.
From what I’ve seen. The fleshy system isn’t just visual. It’s enemy health. Most enemies won’t sever until most of the fleshy bits have been removed. Which ends up being something the flame thrower is kinda okay for. Stripping the flesh with fire before switching to a workhorse that can actually sever limbs.
The wall of fire actually kills extremely well because from what I’ve seen while playing it stun locks most enemies so they just take continuous damage.
It's unbelievable, kind of hilarious that the one company everyone just unanimously agrees is among the worst to just turn around and plop out an actually good game like that. Gotta wonder if they planned this...

Damn I seriously thought Callisto Protocol was gonna come out on top in the space horror game coalition, but it turns out it was Dead Space all along. Happy that the remake is surpassing expectations and hope to see more in the future.
I mean yeah, there is room for both, but reality can be weird when it doesnt. Just like how Mighty Number 9 basically just died after a new Megaman game.
It’s ironic how a game that was supposed to be a spiritual successor to dead space and was heavily inspired by it was beat out by that same games remake.
Personal theory. Sometimes the restrictions put on by a publisher can be a good thing. It holds back some of the nonsensical elements of a directors vision. An example is Star Wars. The original trilogy is hailed as being the greatest trilogy of all time. We had a lot of people telling George Lucas, "George, that idea sucks. We are going to do this." Not compare that to Star Wars prequels where everyone let George Lucas do whatever he wanted. It was a mess. Perhaps it is the same thing when it comes to developing video games.
@@jaysherman2615 And then we have the extreme of making too much restrictions with the sequel trilogy and how much lack of creativity with similar story beats to the original trilogy it end up being.
I'm sure it's already been said, but the same actor has always done Isaac's voice. He did all the pain/melee sounds in Dead Space, his role was just greatly expanded in Dead Space 2.
He actually didn’t do any voice work for the original Dead Space. He even said in an interview that Dead Space 2 was his first audition for anything Dead Space. They just reused grunts and such in later games so I think that’s where the rumor came from.
It seems like the flamethrower is intended primarily for melting away the first few layers on enemies' limbs and then following up with another weapon to dismember.
exactly. additionally its pretty good for slowing down multiple rushing necromoprhs since it can stagger multiple at a time very quickly, then swapping to a more precise weapon and finishing them off
Bro. Bots have gotten so annoying. They couldn't make bot comments feel authentic enough, so they just started copying real comments. Another bot copied your comment and it has more likes than your original comment. If you can see it report it.
I mean, you could probably just put higher quality textures and sounds on the original Dead Space (maybe also improve a couple of mechanics and features) and I think no one would really complain. The original game still holds really well, even if it is pretty buggy on consoles.

I think that the flamethrower is more to soften them up then outright defeat. You toast a few, use a different weapon on a different group, and when you turn back to the previous set, they’re as fortified as a marshmallow peep. I mean, your footage showed the crispy ones being taken out by like 3 shots of a full auto weapon, you’ll have ammo for days!
@@Coffee-hh6we oh, so it fits the same role as the force gun with damage over time as opposed to directly? I guess the choice between them is which you find cooler.
The reason they made Nicole look older is because she's a Medical Officer, and not a low-ranking one at that. She's a scientists, a psychiatry and medical professional. Nicole from the original looked like she barely just made it out of the medical school. Some people might have a problem with that, but her new appearance lends much more levity to every scene she is. When the game tries to sell me on the idea that she's this med officer trying to make sense of what is going on through observation and research in her side quests, I can believe that. She looks old enough to be very capable of this stuff.
She's also working on a mining vessel where extreme injuries are so common that they need to regularly grow body parts, add extreme stress from being hunted by monsters, dehydration, hunger and being unable to sleep and anyone would look older than their age
Playing DS1 and DS2 back to back is weird when Nicole looks like a mid 20s parent to a matured late 40s woman. Playing through DS1 I instantly thought Nicole looked distractingly young when they made every other character realistically age appropriate. I think it was probably just the original team having to rush through certain aspects they didn't get the time on.

@eclipzememegod it's good that there wasn't a fourth game because the same devs gave us calisto protocol which is trash. Gamers are stupid. But you are dumber.
@Eclipze MMG It gives people who haven't had the chance to play the OG or were turned off by it for one reason or another a chance to experience the game for the first time, and for us Dead Space vets... a technically new experience, it's not like it's *the exact same thing* there's new stuff in here. Why're you picking a fight here? Every company is greedy, that surprising to you? But I'm willing to shill out cash if it means the product I'm buying into is actually good. It’s dogshit now wdym? That thing used to be a fuckin howitzer, if you saw something you didn’t like, the contact beam was there to make go away. Now it’s just… shit.
They made a weapon that I originally never touched in 1 and 2 one of my favorites now so hats off to them I love the new contact beam it’s 1 shot alt fire and the death laser primary fire are so fun
I like how in the beginning they basically just confirmed that you don’t kill the necromorphs but rather just disable them, I remember that in the original the devs couldn’t keep already dead bodies in previous locations for stability reasons. But instead they said that it was part of the lore
Not gonna lie, i liked the silent protagonist vibes of the original as it made it feel like we were the character and that we were Isaac instead of him having a voice and emotions. At the same time, him talking now adds a new form of depth missing in the first game so its kind of a win in either direction
I kinda miss the jutteriness and quirks of the necromorph's movements, those snappy movements and turns. They seem so much more fluid now. Makes me wonder if the remake dev's saw it as a limitation at the time or if they removed it for other purposes.
@@Karaksonen i can tell you as a 3d artist it's not easy animating a *normal* human, trying to do something that has numerous elongated limbs and moves in a freaky way is going to be even harder

This. The necromorphs retained none of their iconic animations. The slashers look like they are hopping towards you... Isaac's run and walk looks way to agile.
Me: "It's kinda neat that they're making voice acted characters look like their voice actors, since most voice actors never get that level of recognition that live action actors do." Also me: "Wow Gunner Write Issac looks like Adam Sandler."
It is also to make facial capture easier. Modern games like to add subtle expressions and small gestures to the face. Like, Isaac’s face moves quite a bit during the opening. He has small expressions that reveal that he is nervous about meeting Nicole and moves his head around a bit.
9:00 The remake's new mechanic of choice between life support and lights and such is probably inspired by Alien: Isolation. That game had a power grid in some areas that allowed you to allocate points of limited electricity to enable or disable certain features of the area, from turning off the lights or turning on fog vents to reduce everyone's visibility, therefore leveling the playing field between you and the enemy, as well as other features like locking/unlocking vents which trades off being able to hide yourself in them for locking the alien out of them, and general electricity usage in the room which may remove environmental hazards like electrified water or electronically locked doors. Always a good horror game when you have to make the choice between doing something that might help you OR end up helping the enemy at any moment, further heightening tension and scare factor. Such a thing can't be done with just jumpscares which horror games really need to fucking learn nowadays. Use slow terror mostly, not *just* jumpscares.
Didn't they have something like this in Dead Space 2...? Thought there was one white room with a Marker in it, where you could choose either Life Support or a Vent opening... probably misremembering tbh.
same with the new director ai that triggers enemies and environmental scares whenever it thinks you let your guard down too much, also clearly inspired by isolation
@@NotPork Alien Isolation's AI is absolutely mind-blowing, blows everything, even today out of the water with its learning, director and adaptivity. The fairness of the "director" makes a great compromise between Fairness and Believability. I think the idea of having to sacrifice ammo for having multiple tools and a larger arsenal is interesting. Means you have to decide between being equipped for everything with little ammo or one or two options but having more ammo
From what I've seen it seems to run really well as well. Which is nice considering how horrible a lot of games have been running when released recently.
I can't stop saying it enough. I have replayed Dead Space 1-3 over and over so many times on my 360, then on pc. I thought I couldn't get scared anymore at least not from those games. This remake is a different beast. It all feels so sinister, especially if you play with headphones, everything all the sounds, the clinks, the whispers, even the sudden voices when noone is there, the feeling that nowhere in the ship do you feel safe, even when its areas you've already cleared. I can list so many more things but this game scares me. This remake also does something else, that I'm not sure the original had, maybe to a degree but, when you go back to areas that you have already been in, just to explore or to unlock a few doors before the end. The ship is already in a bad state and sometimes the outline is different, there's growth in those areas, there's even enemies that pop up just because. The lights flicker on and off, power is lost suddenly, the intercoms are going crazy. Some rooms have a fog dim effect and some rooms you hear things all around you in the vents but nothing happens, and you can hear isaac's heartbeat go on and on. It's intense.

You said it yourself about the flame thrower - it peels their flesh off, making it super easy to finish them off with the plasma cutter. Those 2 weapons complement each other perfectly. Burn off the necro’s layers and then pick them off nice and easy with the plasma cutter. That’s why the enemies seemed tankier to you - you weren’t using the peeling and dismemberment systems in tandem, which is what players are meant to do. Those two guns are all you need for an impossible run. If they’re the only guns in your inventory, you’ll get plenty of ammo for both. Light ‘em up and then pop off the crispy limbs with your plasma cutter in 1 or 2 shots. Use stasis and kinesis liberally to conserve even more ammo - you’ll be swimming in it soon enough. Upgrade your stasis whenever you can and get the prototype stasis from side quests. Impossible mode becomes easy mode, your main issues will be environmental threats and one shot kills from certain enemies/bosses.
the two enemies you didnt like (wall guys and tiny guys) are both destroyed by the flame thrower no problem. I love that thing, mainly for the wall of flames. it does such a good job at crowd control

probably my favourite thing about isaac talking is when he doesnt, not that its bad, quite the opposite. it's refreshing to have a game where the protagonist isnt spewing cheesy one liners every time they take a step
Yeah, he just speaks when he's spoken to, or when he needs to convey an idea or information to his fellow survivors. Which only improves the immersion and sensible flow of the story and dialogue from the perspective of a professional starship engineer. When he's alone he doesn't talk to himself which really puts you into Isaac's shoes in that moment: You are alone. No one will help you. The only sound is your heartbeat, your breathing, and the screaming of the monsters out for your blood.
I like how each member of the team only initiate their dialogues in accordance to their roles, Isaac for Engineering, Kendra for Computer, Hammond for Security. Before Isaac gave the impression that he was just following the instructions from those two, including the Engineer bits, which is off putting for me. Glad they've given him a voice this time.

I started trying to use the flamethrower and the force gun. One little trick is to make a flame wall and then switch to the force gun and use the gravity ball effect in the flame wall to suck the enemies into it and that's proven to be pretty fun. I think there's a lot of other creative ways to use the weapons too which is part of the fun of the game.
The reason you get better frames in higher resolution is because you're likely CPU-bound at lower resolutions. Meeting a threshold to trigger GPU usage over CPU can sometimes give you some dramatic performance gains because it isn't relying on the CPU anymore, which is really not designed to handle processing graphics.
Just because something is "ultrawide" does not mean its a higher res. Take God of war for example. That being said where is the option for ultrawide for this game. Or does it require 21:9 monitor? I think he was mistaken. Might have been ultrawide, but fewer pixels. His ultra wide was prolly 3440x1440. And 4k 16:9 is 3820x2160. Being cpu bound only means you do not lose much performance when increasing graphic faditly. But you never gain any.

The flamethrower in this game is god tier. It does great at crowd control since it can make nechromorphs “panic” and stay still allowing you space and time to escape. Plus it only takes a few seconds of flame, maybe 4 at max to kill them. Even when I had base, unupgraded flamethrower it did massive dam. I also never had ammo management issues either, im mostly having to control my inventory from max

Instead of remaking highly popular games, companies should try to remake games that had a lot of potential but failed for one reason or another, or weren’t as successful as they should have been.
I wish they approached games like that . . . But fans eat this sort of shit up, even though the original is already really freaking good. It is basically a cashgrab.
The flamethrower is actually absurd unlike in the original, but the way it needs to be used is really odd. When an enemy has it's legs shot off, you can tap fire to re-proc fire on them, saving an absurd about of ammo. For enemies actively approaching, spray them until they get sent into a panic state (which is most), and this allows you to finish them in any way you want (usually shooting a leg off and watch them just burn to death). You can let the fire do its work and switch to something else once they panic, as the fire does a lot of damage over time and seemingly weakens all limbs (probably because it doesn't seem to have location damage like the other weapons. And the fireball makes multi-path rooms into single path rooms/multi-enemy fights into single enemy fights (duration upgrades are nuts). You don't use it for positional damage or direct/quick kills. This is coming from someone who hated the useless flamethrower in DS1. Edit: Also those wall enemies are dead if you fireball them directly.
Isaac's face model is actually based off of his voice actor. This wasn't the case in the original release because his face was modeled after Max Shippee, someone who was closer in age to Isaac for the original game (Isaac is 47 in Dead Space 1). Gunner Wright, his voice actor and facemodel from 2 and 3 is about 45 now. The characters designs were changed to reflect their appropriate age, since they've always been damned near 50.
One of my favorite things about the remake is how it actually manages to feel like a new game. I replay the original Dead Space and Dead Space 2 at least once a year, around October. I've been doing that for years. Despite having replayed them not too long ago, firing this up and playing it really did feel like a fresh and brand new experience. It really is not just a facelift, it manages to feel like an entirely different game. There's a lot that you will remember, and there's also just enough that is different or new that makes it distinct. I think one of the funniest things was when you back track through the Hangar to get to Engineering. I was fully expecting to head in there and get the Peng statue, but the statue wasn't there, just a text log that basically said "Hahah, it's not here. Look somewhere else." The developers clearly knew that this was a game people had replayed on numerous occasions, and they also knew exactly what to change or make different from the original to keep it fresh. I've replayed the original enough times to know where every playing-dead necromorph is, what to expect in every area, etc. They've changed _just_ enough of these to make them feel very new and different. In the original game, Isaac's grunts and breathing would become more desperate depending on how much health you have. There is a very nice touch in the remake where Isaac's voice lines are also delivered with more desperation/pain depending on your health. I ended up on one sliver of health and Isaac was holding an entire conversation like he was in desperate need of a morphine shot. There's lots of cool little details like this in the game, and it's all these little details adding up that make it so good. This is really what the Callisto Protocol should have been. It's amazing how much it got wrong.
I like the system where you only get ammo for weapons you're carrying. It forces you to find a balance between versatility through a large arsenal, and having enough ammo and inventory space to feed your arsenal. I always go Plasma Cutter, Pulse Rifle, Force Gun, and no fourth weapon. Handles every possible situation but doesn't cause you to have to weapon swap when you wouldn't want to.
I see my faith wasn't misplaced. Now say it with me now kids... 'Just because the team or creator of this good game is now going over to make that game, doesn't guarantee it'll be good.'
Meh. I'm glad it's a good remake, but it was unnecessary and only exists, because EA saw the success of RE2, decided to resurrect the franchise that they mismanaged and killed, because people will buy it. I'm still boycotting it, because supporting it, tells EA that it's fine if they kill franchises and studios, so long as they make up for it years down the line by bringing it back.
@@DMCMaster550 you're wrong here. Buying this sends the message that the public wants more of it, like it is, and greenlighting the sequel is worth it. Boycotting this game only tells the publisher, who probably spent between 50 and 100 million dollars to have this game made, that there's no money for their old IPs in single player and they need to focus more on games as a service and mobile crap, where their IPs make money. Be careful what you wish for
I personally can't see that going well with the fans without switching to a different protagonist, which will probably cause problems too. The thing with horror is that it can't survive prolonged exposure. As much as people hate when it happens, horror series turning into action is just a natural progression, you can't keep freaking out over zombies when you've gone through a whole mansion filled with them or wet your pants over xenomorphs after dealing with a whole hive, you get used to it. This applies not only to fictional characters, but the player as well, you eventually stop getting scared by monsters and switch to thinking about how to efficiently fight them or, as already was the case in original Dead Space, you mow them down with little effort and they become yet another obstacle to finishing the game.
@@anothenblue2630I don´t think the horror will matter anymore within the monster side of things, the drama that the storyline has can evolve into it´s own kind of psychological horror, DS2 has had plenty of that, all this saga needs is a remake from scratch of DS3
@@jeanfrancozaratemarcial7916 Yeah... I think they should go ahead with that idea of having Ellie as our protagonist and exploring various ships to salvage what she can to stay alive while outrunning Brethren moons and fighting Necrmorphs. Seemed like a cool concept... But that's just me.
One of the only things I disagree with is the point about the plasma cutter. While it IS a great weapon, they buffed a lot of the other weapons so much in the new iteration that you dont HAVE to use it without feeling handicapped. It was so refreshing to use the other weapons and switch between them often when they were best applicable. Plasma cutter is probably best for harder difficulties, but if you want just to have a fun romp the other weapons are ALL effective now. Even the flamethrower (which has a great alt fire now btw)
I played through the original not that long ago. It still holds up. It really is a fantastic game. I just don't see how the remake improves it so much it deserves 60 quid.
Same though I'm secretly hoping they remake the series and change the ending somehow to allow for a continuation. I don't know how they could do that without it sucking though. Short of a deathstar superlaser, the brethren moons are going to be... difficult to deal with
@@landotucker or they could completely undo that concept and remake DS3 from the ground up. The nice part about lovecraftian horror are the things you don’t know, the moment they slapped a “this is the big bad guy.” Sign onto something, the mystery and uncertainty is lost.
There's little things I notice too that are odd with the remake and that I dislike. Isaac talking is interesting, but I find it takes away from the ultimate twist and his complete lack of reaction isn't consistent with Dead Space 2. One scene I can think of in 2 is the Ceawler scene where it explodes a woman and blood fills the window - Isaac gags and visibly recoils. Here, he stands ramrod stiff as the lurker kills a guy. It's odd to me. Something else odd to me is how stiff Isaac looks too. He looks like he's running with a titanium spine, and it doesn't look as fluid or smooth as the original. When walking, Isaac will move his gun around him and look around, and he'll also shift his stance more while running. I noticed that's kinda absent here.
60 bucks is not that much for hours of entertainment and a game which is good. I personally think it is worth it's money. You can't really complain that a remake is not worth it's money when it is everything it is supposed to be. It is after all a remake and not just a remaster.
@PSYMEDIC it is a lot when you've just played the game and the original is on game pass. The original still holds up great, gameplay, graphics and tension are great. What I've seen from the remake it just isn't 60 quids worth of value. Put it this way. This doesn't look anywhere near as much as an upgrade as res 2 remake.
I found the best thing to do with so famethrower so far is to blast a necro for a few seconds to get them toasty, and then all their limbs are a lot easier to blast off with another weapon. It’s good as a combo weapon, not a primary damage dealer
The flamethrower is a hidden gem. I found the flamethrower useful for taking care of the guardians, it destroys them. I also found it useful for any necromorphs that get too close and any of the small enemies.
Yeah, the FT is a gem, and its the tool I always carried allong with the Plasma Cutter for the ride (Ripley taught me that😒👍) and cos depending on the diff mod, the Divider or even the f-n swarmers can end your joy at defeat a whole pack of bigger enemies in a zap😒
You ought to do a "Playing and ranking every Halo game" Might be fun to do. Back in 2020 I went back and did all the campaigns on LASO, not fun at all, but was nostalgic at times.
This is honestly the best sequel to Home Improvement on the SNES. All these years of waiting for the next entry of Tim the toolman is finally over and we got something different (in a good way)
I hope they make Dead Space 2 as well. I had so much fun with the Seeker Rifle, running around turning necromorphs into soup, yelling soup every shot until I got bored. At one point, I picked up the Contact Beam to see how effective it was and shot a necromorph's torso. I wish I recorded it. As I was charging, I held the S until I shot it. And I shit you not, I cut the torso off of the limbs. Didn't say soup though.
Hope they keep the multiplayer and Gabes DLC story severed. The multiplayer was actually fun, unique and had lore for why you were playing as one of the antagonists, Hans Tiedemann security team. It tied into the main games story really well. Although I can understand them not including it this time around.
Nicole's voice actress looks younger than her in-game model. Please don't become one of those wokoharam's who dismiss conservative criticism as people who "need to go outside".
I haven't played the original yet - I have it in my library and it's next on my list. I've been hesitating to buy the remake, but honestly some of the side by side comparison clips surprised me - I'm surprised how little difference there is, and I think that just shows how good the original looks even after so many years. The remake looks great, but I think I'll be just fine with the original for now and I'm excited to try it :)
I'd say, play the OG first then try the remake if you really enjoy it. From what I understand, they've improved a lot of things, including revamping possibly one of the most annoying sections of the game to make it far more enjoyable.
Gman yet again has implemented lore to a game which makes everything better: Isaac Clarke likes cougars. Excellent! Also great review Gman, yours are truly super entertaining (and this makes up for dunking on Evil West, all forgiven) and never will the Simpsons clips get old. Keep up the awesome work. But the way, you should do a collaboration review with Skill Up, feel that would be a good thing.
Honestly, after the Calisto Protocol, I'm just glad this lives up to the hype. This franchise always deserved to continue, and maybe now with EA being willing to let it be its own thing, it'll get a remake of two and a complete rework of DS3 (I do like the story of that game, but you can write a 10 page essay on EAs interference with its development and in game features).
I think the fact that I was one of the guys ridiculing these guys for remaking a masterpiece and ending up liking the remake more really says how good Motive are.
This has to be a dream, I was at least 304.6% sure they'd mess it up completely. Also I like any addition they make towards Isaac tinkering with stuffs and making engineering choices even though they might not be that deep. I really liked the weapon tinkering in DS3 *as an idea,* the execution wasn't that good, but the idea and the "modular thinking" that an engineer might have was nice.
