The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Stealth Aircraft is a group of United States-made single-seat, single-engine, all-terrain and all-weather stealth multirole fighters used to carry out critical air and strike missions. The F-35 Stealth Aircraft is also capable of electronic warfare and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities. Lockheed Martin is the prime contractor for the F-35 Stealth Aircraft, with key partners Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems. The F-35 Stealth Aircraft has three main variants: conventional takeoff and landing for the F-35A (CTOL), short takeoff and vertical landing for the F-35B (STOVL), and carrier-based F-35C (CV/CATOBAR) .
The F-35 stealth aircraft follows on from the Lockheed Martin X-35, which in 2001 beat the Boeing X-32 to win the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program. Work is principally funded by the United States, with additional funding from program partner countries from NATO and close US allies, including the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Italy, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Turkey (before release). Several other countries have ordered, or are considering purchasing the aircraft. The F-35 Stealth Aircraft program has attracted much attention and criticism due to the program's unprecedented detail, level of complexity, enormous costs, and extremely long delivery times, with many technical flaws still being ironed out. The pooling strategy for concurrent production of aircraft while they were still in development and testing led to expensive design changes and retrofits.
The F-35B stealth aircraft entered service with the US Marine Corps in July 2015, followed by the US Air Force's F-35A stealth aircraft in August 2016 and the US Navy's F-35C stealth aircraft in February 2019. The F-35 stealth aircraft was first used in combat in 2018 by the Israeli Air Force. The US plans to buy 2,456 F-35 stealth aircraft by 2044, which will be critical to the majority of the manned tactical air power of the US Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps for decades.
