In this video I react to A night on the town by The Dear Hunter.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

Always here for a Dear Hunter or Between the Buried and Me reaction. Nice catch on the ELO feeling. ELO is one of Casey's (the mastermind behind TDH) favorite groups.

Thanks for the reaction! One thing that frustrates me is it's always Act 4 and 5 that is asked to react to. I understand that they are their most recent albums and are good albums. However there is a massive change in sound between Act 3 and Act 4. Imo Act 2 is their masterpiece. I personally would love to see you react to the Bitter Suite from Act 2. That section you thought was cool is a call back to The Bitter Suite.

This song is amazing in and of itself but having the context of their whole discography really elevates it as there so many leitmotifs and callbacks to previous albums going on

The Most Cursed of Hands / Who Am I is a good pick. One of the most bad-ass songs! Of course, I love almost all of The Dear Hunter's catalog though, so it's all good!

This may be obvious but one thing to note btw is that the way this song ends may sound odd but that’s because it transitions into the next song on the album, as most of TDH songs do.

If any band deserves the honour it is absolutely TDH. The inter-song context is half the enjoyment of this band. The motifs, the story, the diverse soundscape and imagery. All on par with the music of a particular song itself, which is already outstanding as a standalone piece of art in any case.

WW Son Lux- Enough of our Machines You mention you've produced electronic music, and Son Lux I think would be a perfect fit for the kind of music you've covered, conceptually and tonally, if not in the same genre at all. I think you'd enjoy Son Lux a lot. They're sort of electronic minimalist with some dubstep elements akin to James Blake, with orchestral overtones.
