@@chilledtea6614 remember when iron man died in the latest avengers? Superman dying was like that culturally except the mcu has only been around for 15 years, superman was around for generations and people really believed he was killed off
This type of research and literary comparisons is what separates this channel from other comic channels. Not trying to diss anyone, just pointing out the quality of Rob's work.
Awesome story. Never got to read the comics, but I read the novelization of the entire situation. it was called the Death and Life of Superman. It's what actually gave me respect for Superman
Darkseid was far from the only villain that could go toe to toe with Superman prior to Doomsday. Brainiac, Bizarro, the Anti-Monitor, Mr. Mxy, Zodd just to name some at the top of my head.
Great to see you doing this kind of video again, Rob! While I've enjoyed some of the other formats and styles you've been trying out, THIS is the style of video that got me hooked on your channel to begin with. Can't wait for the rest of this series!!!
Thanks for doing this story Rob, out of all the stories I thought it would have been cool for you to discuss I never thought of doing this story, thanks.
Yooo happy new year rob. Thanks for all the great vids this year. Your vid on the punisher was amazing, cant wait to see whats in store for 2016 thanks for putting me on to comic pop w sal through the weekley pull. Cheers bud !
Great video. I spoke to Louis Simonson back in May and she confirmed much of what you said, especially about wanting to wed Superman & Lois, but had to wait because of the TV series at the time. Can't wait to see more!!
You know what? I think it's safe to say that a large part of the joy we experience watching your videos comes from your voice; it just demands attention! respect from Germany.
You're vids are great , thank you. I loved this time in comic book history. Can you do or have you done a vid on the aftermath of death of superman ? Explaining the Eradicatior , Cyborg superman ect...
+Chris Purolover Didn't Superman just wreck him there as well? Though in that case, it was kinda part of the plan. That DD and the art of that battle was insane, though.
Paur He barely beat him physically and nearly died. After that, as you said, he was infected by a virus that was planned to overtake him the entire time. If it wasn't for the help of many characters such as Diana, Lois, or Lana, he would have been fucked. That's as far away from wrecked as I can think of.
Loved the Death and Reign arcs. Funeral For a Friend was not as good though needed as the middle arc. Death of Superman was the first moment I realized I actually like Booster Gold. I honestly don't feel it was initial intended as a money grabber by DC but they started the over saturation with the word's reaction. And the fact that a few pages sets up the fall of the Green Lantern Corps, as an avid GL fan, was mind blowing at the time. Love your videos. Would love one on Superman Exile. The omnibus was just released and it includes not only the introduction of the Eradicator, but also the first comic I ever owned.
Just read the Death of Superman again earlier. Man. I do not give a shit what ppl think, the story is crazy. And awesome..... Superman #75 is the most epic comic issue of all time. Period. It almost brings a tear to your eye , and makes you see how much of a hardass Supes rly is. Death of Superman is still the best comic ever. Watchmen is good and all, but it doesn’t compare to Superman. It’s just too Epic. Btw, I also, cannot stand it either when certain incompetent writers try to “depower” Superman more or less, Schwartz was a complete idiot.. And another btw, mullet Superman was just hilarious after he came back lmao. Badass.
I always found it silly calling things like Super-weaving Super-mathmatics ect. as other powers. They aren't superpowers they are just him using his powers while doing those things. He's a genius so it's not Supermath. It's just a genius using math. It's not Superweaving, it's weaving while using Superspeed.
@@jeffreybratton6186 he's literally a kryptonian, a species which is one of the most advanced in the universe, and not to mention how he's also the son of Krypton's foremost scientist. So Kal definitely has the capacity to be as smart as them since he also has access to krypton's database and files where he can learn what kryptonians were taught. However since not all of krypton's database survived, he won't ever get to learn everything Krypton has learnt either. However he's not on the level of Lex or Batman since he doesn't really bother to learn what those 2 have
8:23 Well, well, well. Look who it is! Where the hell were _you_ guys when Superman was being killed by a rage monster? Seriously, you thought that the C-Team was adequate support?
Wonder Woman and Hal were in Space, Wally was apparently fighting Zoom/Eobard Thawne, and Batman was going through Nightfall, not sure about Marvel and the Apokoliptians
Love your videos, can you explain the Earth X, Paradise X, and Universe X series...I am starting to collect them and would like to get the 411 on them, thanks
Sorry but I can't seem to find the videos about the Return of Superman. Is there a set of videos that covers the four Superman before the original comes back in the black suit?
Hey Rob. There is a novel, like an ordinary book. It's good. I don't mean something with illustrations either. It's old. I read it prior to 2001. I recommend it.
There was a Doomsday: Year One comic back in the 90's. It shows that Doomsday wiped out a number of planets, and a corps of Green Lanterns, before landing on Calaton and being defeated.
Also you may read Doomday annual one year one which Doomsday nearly wiped out the Green Lantern corp. the one of the chapter where Doomsday encountered a GL by the name of Zharan Pel, kills him, take his ring then goes after the Guardians killing several GL, and a Guardian.
Hmm, seems you missed out on some of Doomsday's history. Among the planets he visits is the homeworld of the Khunds, which were caught in constant warfare among the various clans, but Doomsday's arrival inspired them to work together and conquer the stars, leading them to becoming one of the more constant threats to the Green Lantern Corps. He also once came upon and killed a Lantern, thus gaining it's ring and the attention of the Guardians.
I was wondering if you could do a video about the strength level of the Hulk. I have been reading his comics since I was a kid but his strength always seems to fluctuate. I understand it is based on his anger level but if you watch the new terrible avengers movie he gets beaten by a hulk buster even when he is uncontrollably mad. I just know that Hulk is the strongest there is but I'd like to hear what you think in a video.
+RaginDXDemon The Golden Age dates from 1938 Action Comics #1 (Superman's first appearance and the start of the comic book industry as we know it today (thanks to Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster) to 1945 the end of World War 2. (although some fans also stretch it into the mid 1950's with the EC Comics era and the comics code basically emasculating comics afterwards as the end of the Golden Age) The Silver Age dates from 1956 Showcase #4 (The first appearance of the Barry Allen Flash and the start of the superhero revival) and goes through Stan Lee & Jack Kirby's The Fantastic Four #1 in the early sixties and bringing about "The Marvel Era" to 1969-1970 with Kirby leaving Marvel and the start of Denny O' Neil/Neal Adams Batman era. The Bronze Age starts in 1970-1971 with comics like Berni Wrightsen's Swamp Thing, Joe Kubert's Sgt Rock, Mike Kaluta's The Shadow. Roy Thomas & Barry Windsor Smith's Conan The Barbarian and too many other titles to mention and maybe lasts until 1979 (Frank Miller's Daredevil) or 1980?
I believe it was hinted at that the object Brainiac launched towards earth during the Panic in the sky miniseries was the burial capsule for Doomsday! a weapon to be used in case of his defeat! kind of thing Brainiac would do!!
When all of this happen in the comic, the new appears in the real an serious news paper. No-one believe superman would die, and it was an international surprise. Good times to be alive :)
+Platinum Swords No, they never could be worth anything in the first place. They were too mass produced. Even if those characters stayed dead, it wouldn't matter because they printed millions of those comics. That is why they crashed the whole industry in the 90s. The only comics that are worth anything today, and production runs of less than 100,000
+the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN i dunno where flash was but GL was off planet and came back in time to see Coast City destroyed during Reign of Supermen storyline and WW went Themyscara during The Contest storyline
So what made Batman popular, was the mess up in direction in the writing regarding Superman. Batmans stories is basically what fans wanted. Villains that are bigger than Batman giving him major problems. That and not a cluster of origins and reboots. Thats my assumption ofcourse
With regards to genetics and evolution according to your description of the origin of Doomsday, that's not how it works. A genetic sample one member of a species cannot evolve traits that didn't existed before by somehow 'remembering' past experiences and recording in their genes. Evolution comes from the selection of random mutations of multiple members of a species which may even lead to a total different species. Those with good mutations live and pass to their offspring. Those with bad mutations die out. Those offspring that live (not the parent) may then have random mutations and so the cycle or evolution continues.
I bought the trade of Death Of SUperman and I did buy Superman 75, (more on that later). As far as that story goes there is pretty much nothing to it. A new Villain shows up escapes his prison, goes on a killing spree. Some of the Justice League try to stop them and get beaten easy. Then Superman shows up and it's all out brawl until the end. That's the whole story. For action it's awesome and probably the best Superman fight ever but there is not much story to it. Superman 75 was the best selling comic ever and that is because DC shamlessly lied to everyone. They told the media in issue 75 they were killing off Superman for good. At the time this got huge media coverage on radio news and regular tv that almost never covered comics, I remember Entertainment Tonight ran a story on it. When the comic came out and I went to my local comic book store I never seen it so packed it was shoulder to shoulder people. It didn't sell well because of a polybag or a trading card. As far as the return went I didn't care I was never a fan of DC or Superman and I was actually happy they were killing his lame overpower out of date character off. I remember my comic book owner saying to me they weren't killing him off, and I asked him why and he said first he gets list of comics being shipped out way in advance to what they say in the comics (this is preinternet times), and that DC comics almost all there sales were around only 2 characters Batman and Superman. Killing off one of them forever would be the death of the company unlike Marvel that has many strong characters and strong selling books DC only has 2.
Read the story back in the day .It rattled the comic book world were it was never the same .The movie on it was awful from a few years back .But the comic was good and everyone from the DC Universe was in the story .And comics went really much darker .
Hey Rob or anyone reading with knowledge of Superman comics....The Death of Clarke Kent. I haven’t heard anything about that comic. Does it have any significance in today’s DC universe?
Comic books focusing on the same characters results in heroes who retain the better story qualities given to them by various writers and ignoring the less interesting or illogical ones but they also result in way too many inconsistencies, multiple forms of the same character, and events like death and de-powerings that are pretty much pointless
It always confused me how they decided just because he's an alien from a different world, he would suddenly become a god on a world like ours. It's just been jarring how they couldn't have just let him be a Super man instead of the god you call for help. I always wondered why is it that Superman is the only hero that doesn't have to worry about his mortality say for a small few threats while everyone else lives with death's door always next to them.
I remember reading about this as a kid. It was like the whole world stopped for a sec. And no one wanted to believe this was true. Superman our greatest hero dead? This shit was every where they even ran special news coverage on TV networks and stuff. First time they ran with a comic book character story on television ever. I think just goes to show what this character has meant to people around the globe. He's almost like a Messiah type character to people. Which is crazy. Can't wait to see next weeks video!!!
