Toby Fox's Undertale was more than a hit indie game. When it released in 2015, it became a
gaming cultural touchstone. But as the years went on, opinions on Undertale started to sour until
it seemed like there were more dissenters than actual fans. But what exactly happened to Undertale?

It always astounds me that people who claim to love something so much can so thoroughly miss the point of it.
@hephsforge9236
@hephsforge9236 Год назад
Probably has something to do with why exactly they love it. There’s a habit a lot of people seem to have of falling in love with the idea of something rather than the actual thing itself. Loving the idea of something rather than what it is, whether it is a video game or a person will often lead to the mistreatment of that thing, disguised as love and once you are a hypocrite in that sense, it’s easier to be one in others. Basically, their allegiance is to that single aspect they loved and nothing else and they will force everything else to better serve that single aspect they loved.

But I won't let that get the better of me, and I really dislike it when people conflate the fanbase to the game. 5:45 Reminds me when this Let's Player I'm a fan of was doing an LP for EarthBound. He likes to do voices for the characters, ad-lib his own dialogue and even sometimes insert small edited skits into his videos. The fandom did not appreciate that. They accused him of "ruining" the characters and playing the game wrong. He also said that while he enjoyed the game he had some complaints with it (complaints that I agree with) and he also named the characters after characters from the other games he played on the channel. A few episodes in, he addressed the criticisms and he sounded pretty disheartened. People were shitting on him for applying his usual sthick to EarthBound. Thankfully he didn't end up changing anything about the LP and I feel like people who had an issue with the way he played the game dropped off the series at that point. But then he did Mother 3 (a game which he absolutely loved), did his usual sthick again and he got shat on _again_ . So yeah, let people have fun. Let people have their own interpretation of the game.

@Vorcupine
@Vorcupine Год назад
True, but the thing is, Undertale's active fandom isn't "large" anymore. People have moved on to Deltarune, grown up, or left the genre completely. The only people-- Like said in the video, are like starving vultures desperately picking off meat that isn't even there anymore.

@@Vorcupine wdym? The undertale fandom and the deltarune fandom are one in the same. The games may not follow the same story but they are clearly connected in some way. Definitely not as big as it once was I agree, but still incredibly large
@Vorcupine
@Vorcupine Год назад
@@kuraio3017 (Before I continue I must say I am speaking solely for Undertale here. Not Deltarune) I disagree, I know many people who were into Undertale and could never get in to Deltarune such as myself, they are also very different games not connected by story. (As said by Toby Fox himself.) People only try to connect them because of- This entire reason for this argument. Like I said, people moved on to Deltarune. -- Meaning they're not really active in Undertale's community and game and have moved on to Deltarune. If you aren't active in a community, you aren't in the fandom, I have been in and out of it just because I have been into other games. And to imply Undertale's fandom is still large is just fallacy, if you look "Undertale" up on RU-vid you will see rough patterns of QUITE LITERALLY 1-2 videos being posted per day, amassing ~10k-~75kviews, and the majority that get more than 50k are just RU-vid shorts that automatically get more views than normal videos. And to compare it to an actually active fandom. -- FNAF, RU-vid Shorts usually amassing ~40k to even ~550k. Normal videos getting at LEAST 30k views, and TWO game theory videos on it have been posted in the past week, which alone when combined got rounded to the nearest hundred thousand; 3,300,000 views. (3.3 Million) Most high quality videos, which aren't hard to find, get around 200k-600k views. With numerous streams upwards of 8k views, and almost 4 videos posted a day. I'm not hating on undertale here, just stating facts, the fandom is not 'large', it is dead, no relevant content being made on it, even Comic Dub videos only getting around 20k views which used to get upwards of 8 Million, which even now have 12 Million to 15 MILLION.. I love Undertale so much, but it's time to let go. (Also sorry for this essay, but I like destroying people's weak arguments with analytics and facts. No offense and nothing personal.)

Good video. Only thing I'd disagree with is the overall thought that Undertale was killed and obliterated by the fanbase so quickly and became more of an afterthought that most people would like to discard, going from massive into something tiny and forgotten in a heartbeat. It was a much slower process and also isn't entirely true. The Undertale fanbase did bring a lot of controversy, did make people shy away from the game or hate it outright, or just plainly gave it a bad rep to some extent, but I would argue the fanbase had more positive influence than negative, and brought in a much larger audience than Undertale could have gotten without it. And the game lasted for a few years in terms of high popularity. Blowing up in late 2015, gaining mainstream popularity and even reaching the pinnacle of the industry for a time in 2016, retaining that popularity until 2017 where the fanbase expanded more and more, slowly fizzling out but still garnering a huge loving fanbase and good statistics throughout 2017, and reaching near-irrelevancy into 2018 (on the scale of video games as a medium, not within its fandom, the fandom stayed strong and is still doing just fine with millions of active fans) but still retaining a solid, large fanbase, lasting long enough to be followed by its successor, Deltarune. Though I doubt Deltarune will even have a slim chance of reaching the insane heights Undertale managed to peak at, I'm certain it will be an amazing game with plenty of deserved attention.

This video feels like it came out in 2016. While it's true that certain weirdos were overly rude to people trying to assert one way of playing the game, characterizing that as a "majority" of the fanbase and then claiming that it killed Undertale are both pretty bold, unsubstantiated claims. Of course a game that came out in 2015 and has only gotten minor updates since doesn't have the same size fanbase as it did back then. I see Deltarune fan content all the time all over the web, though, because much of the fanbase is obviously now focused on the new thing related to Undertale, a game they still love. Further, Undertale actively tries to present itself as a game where your choices affect an actual world and reflect back on you as a player in some way, so Toby Fox specifying that Deltarune is disconnected from that world completely makes sense within that artistic vision. Some fans took that too far and that's not cool, yeah, but it was still the vision all along for them to think of the game as something like a real place. Undertale is a beloved classic, it's not "dead"

Undertale is an incredible game, once you can break past the surface of the fandom to actually go and play it. Don't abide by some idiots pushing community rules, disregard the fan content, just play the game, and see where it takes you, without spoiling yourself, without external opinions, just you, and a game free for you to explore as you please. After seeing plenty of minor references pop up over the years, that was how I approached it when I sat down and played it, and while I did look into wiki pages towards the end to get a better understanding of a couple things I overlooked, didn't understand, or just plain missed out on, I thoroughly enjoyed what was there on offer, doing several playthoroughs of it because of the curiosity I had towards the different paths you could take throughout the story. The only path I never managed to successfully play was the Genocide path; there was always some character that I missed, and thus Sans never showed up in the end, even when I backtracked and looked as hard as I could for what I may have missed. Even though I played the game far beyond its prime, I found it a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Granted, I also managed to avoid spoiling myself on it for the entire five or six years I dodged it, so that may have helped it be a fresher experience for me than it otherwise would have been.

Sadly, people I know who would love the game got sick of the type of people the fans tended to be and it soured their opinion on the game. Even a few streamers who would absolutely love the game have no desire at all to play it because so many people have bothered them about it. I blame Tumblr and other terminally-online weirdos. It's fine to like something a lot and to come up with tweaked fan-universes, but calm down and leave people alone.

True. I once joined a discussion and was so extremely bold as to claim that I think Papyrus is probably supposed to be a kid who is actually just large as a form of comedy, whereas his short brother is actually the adult between the two, and I provided by reasons as to why I think that, one of them simply being that Papyrus is very naive and gullible. Someone came along and typed an essay while insulting me because I dared to think differently from them, and they quite literally talked like they were defending a person, treating me like I severely insulted someone. Afterwards I just suggested that they seek mental health aid because being so attached to a fictional character is not good.

So many kinds of fandoms are hit with this really weird bit of abuse. Another great example of a community ruining what it loves is Steven Universe. I personally don't like Steven Universe, I don't really think it has the correct messages it was going for being applied in a manner that actually helps kids and some teens grow into better people (this is from watching like two seasons of the show and taking a glance at some interviews of what the producers were going for). But just because I don't personally like Steven Universe and what it has to say doesn't mean others don't, and the community grew too big, too fast. This particular community of fans quickly grew into an extremist politically left ideology where if you try to critique something, fans would outright attack you anywhere they could. Up to the point that the fanartist Zamii attempted suicide (though did re-emerge after a couple days while in a hospital after the attempt, I believe). And they attacked this fanartist for drawing a particular character in a partial image as "too thin." This wasn't the first time she was attacked, but it was very close to the last time. She was continuously under fire from the community and not a single person as I'm aware would ever come out with a truthful apology. This is just one example of MANY fandoms ranging from the nerdiest of Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, gaming franchises like Mass Effect and Halo, and continuing to prevail into the simplest of even hobbies like makeup artistry, graphic design, writing, you name it. Toxicity in fandoms will always be around, critiquing media becomes a wildfire of people taking critiques personally and then retaliating with dozens of times of unnecessary commentation, threats, and the like. If I were to go on an essay that critiques the sequel trilogy of Star Wars, about how the movies only connect by characters mentioned to the other two trilogies and how it disrespects a lot of the source material and the reasonings for the other two trilogies existing, I would immediately be bashed by sequel trilogy fans for being sexist, racist, homophobic, and the like and I would probably never see peace again. I would probably be blacklisted from subreddits favoring the sequel trilogy, blocked on twitter, facebook, any social media with groups that enjoy the sequel trilogy, whatever. Yet, I would likely never see someone from that side of the internet say "Yeah, you're right, they're flawed movies." What I would receive at base is the response of "Okay but the prequel trilogy sucks too" or "well Luke Skywalker is a Mary Sue if Rey is" in an attempt to deflect legitimate criticism. (And the opposite is also true, there's toxic fans who downright threaten people who just like the sequel trilogy just because its flashy and lacks substance, people who don't really care and are barely defending the sequel trilogy. Both sides exist and yet - to me - they're the same kind of toxic) And I haven't even gotten to fanart, fanfiction, fan-animation, all kinds of fan-media that fill every crack of the internet from sites like DeviantArt and Archive of our Own all the way to Quotev and back to the tops like Twitter. People are so desperate for the shows they love to be perfect and ever-lasting that they forget to critique and separate themselves from the art, artist, and the reality of the real world. People need to learn a very important skill when it comes to the stories we see on media. The ability to separate our subjective view of a form of media versus our objective view. And this - in particular - can be difficult to articulate. So allow me to explain what I mean using the example of "My Favorite Movie Is..." In my real life, one movie I HAVE to watch every year is The Fox and the Hound. It is my favorite movie of all time. I much prefer Disney's classic 2D style of animation, along with all the life lessons some of those movies once provided. Fox and the Hound has a huge life lesson, that no matter what happens, life moves on. But that doesn't mean our memories of the good times have to fade. Our friends made us who we are today, and even when the days come that we grow older and separate, we can still look back and say "I remember that friend, he made my childhood awesome." The plot of the story is a lot like this, we see Todd and Copper start as pups, being friends, making promises that at first seemed reasonable. But their paths diverge, they go their separate ways due to forces beyond their control. They fight until the point that they both realize there isn't a point, that things happen. Todd is the titular main character who drives the plot of trying to be friends, until he learns that he can't just do that. Yet, even though this is my favorite movie, I wouldn't dare ever give it a 10/10. I wouldn't put Fox and the Hound up there with the likes of movies like The Godfather or shows like Breaking Bad, which use their characters in amazing and distinct ways that propel those medias to be some of the best they could ever strive to become. Fox and the Hound is not a perfect movie, nor could it ever have been. My point is that while I can still love something, I can critique it. I can critique the animation, the plot, the stylization and choices made throughout production. I won't vehemently defend Fox and the Hound to my dying breath against any and all criticism. In fact, I welcome it. I want all forms of media to be better than they were last year, and the year before. I want the next Star Wars movie to be thought through and not rushed. I want The Last of Us' show to be a masterpiece from start to finish. I want video games to tell the tales they want in a way that audiences can digest in a nuanced way. The fact of the matter is that the extreme parts of any fandom are fueled way too often, and they will almost forever burn until the only thing left is the ashes of the product they loved so much. Undertale thrived until the community used its own game as fuel, and now the game is basically dead. To the point that Deltarune has been forgotten about by a lot of people, including myself. Star Wars almost hit the point of no return, another bad show, another bad movie, and I think the majority of the community would've just moved on, leaving behind nothing but the remnants of sequel trilogy lovers and haters to fight and fight and fight until the IP became non-profitable. To the point that Steven Universe slowly destroyed itself, lasting just long enough to finish its major arcs (as far as I'm aware, again, not my specialty). Stop deifying your media. Start critiquing and wanting for better. Art cannot be perfected, but it can always be better achieved in some way. TLDR: Fandoms suck ass, people need to separate subjective and objective views of a media (which is difficult and not 100% possible for 99.99999% of the population), and we need to be able to critique media without being attacked for it.

There is a point where love and admiration becomes obsession and fandoms turn into cults. Nobody likes their favorite whatever bashed and go unappreciated but when you see yourself as the sole proprietor of said whatever and only accept your way of its appreciation is where things go full cultist tribal and is where you've taken things too far. Even getting overly invested in some things it would never even cross my mind to wish harm and misery upon others for not liking what I like the same way I do. That would serve absolutely no purpose and would be just plain dumb. But being social animals that we humans are, we tend to get overly protective with things we've grown attached to (too attached even). It's amplified and made much worse by how internet allows people to find their little echo chambers where they are surrounded by the blissful agreement and gradually lose the ability to differ in opinion.

It would be like saying "the toxic furries were the downfall of the furry fandom" yeah nothing about the original is going away. I've seen more people whine about the fandom then actually seeing bad people. I feel like this video overstates how dead the Undertale fandom is (there’s still hype, and fan content, especially around Deltarune… It’s just not “thermonuclear” anymore, and because it’s not the biggest thing ever it’s dead… I feel like some of the points in this video also are not the best… I feel like you're overstating the freaky, abhorrent stuff in the fandom as that kind of stuff (as you say) can be found in any fandom… z Trying to single it out as one of the reasons for Undertale’s “death” seems misguided. and the flipping policing of Undertale playthroughs is also bad. (It's like taking away from the experience as playing a pacifist route after a neutral one likely would feel stronger.) but I don’t think this is the “majority” … just a small group of vocal lunatics. The Deltarune description was more just to explain that Deltarune is not connected so people would not be worried that one end would be canonized/not canonized (Plus explaining that the game is not a sequel or prequel as it shares a lot of the same characters... Almost like an... AU...). It feels like you're just trying to frame it as a part of this “fans madness ruined the game” narrative. What leads to “dwindling interest” in undertale is just, age? Like that’s it… Obviously, it’s not going to be thermonuclearly popular after a few years so acting like it’s “dying” when it’s just chilling feels like just, trying to find a way to justify your clickbait YT title… and you did not even acknowledge the fandom around Deltarune (despite showing footage of Deltarune fangames) Like, Deltarune is unfinished but I honestly think it has the potential to surpass Undertale in quality, and maybe even popularity (unless you consider it apart of the same fandom) The fandom is doing pretty strong (and as someone who joined pretty late I feel like most of the madness is in the past…) Probably should not leave a comment as it would boost this video in the algorithm when I think it’s bad, but whatever…

As for the game itself it's got a unique morality system,but I never considered it the greatest game of all time like many people in 2015 thought it isn't even the best game of 2015 that would go to Bloodborne. As for fanart or fans ruining the game. I don't let fanbases ruin my enjoyment of something.Rule 34 is something every remotely gets of it. I think it's stupid how some people will let a fanbase ruin something for them it's not hard to ignore it and enjoy the game.

at first i was curious about trying to play it .. i watched the walkthroughs or all the paths since i'm a spoilers lover. and once i tried to have my copy .. doomstale arrived ... super paranormal saturation of the thing arrived not merely like a tidal wave, but rather like a solar wave.. undertale fandom attacked like a raging solar burst and destroyed all there was to love about it. undertale everywhere .. it was no longer a mere indie game, it became its own marketing brand.. and it became really disgusting and insufferable. i never played it, and never will. and especially when the degenerates and deranged trash humanswine creating trash content for the game, the game lost its identity completely. their "backseating" also killed the game altogether. if new gamers wanted to try a different style, they get lynched and hung by the nearest tree! someone wanted to play 100% in a different order, get lynched and hung, the game was no longer a game, it became a cultistic trap. you either play it HOW THE FANS DEMAND IT PLAYED, "your own options and experience" be DAMNED. or you simply pretend it didn't exist, and disown it ever lived. also the "fan art" more like hormonal art is too sick and too disgusting.. some artists really should find their own deep net groups and never return to the normal net. undertale is no longer an entertainment game, it's a raging cult filled with crazy worshipers, and internet doxers, they'd rather you DIE FOR REAL, than play it any other way. .. i simply disowned the game ever existed, never played and never will. personally.. when this cult game, arrived, i was introduced to another one, much smaller, and shorter, much unique, and cuter, and overall ... i thank very much undertale's fanbase of lunatics, for gatekeeping the game so much hardcore, that i got to enjoy my life with OneShot. both were released very near each other, OneShot was released before undertale, and OneShot remained chaste. as the madnessbase violated undertale in all shapes and forms, and ways. TL;DR: if you want to play undertale online .. you better choose 1 of 2 things... do you want to play the game privately and never share with anyone at all you ever played it, and enjoy what can be enjoyed of it? or would you like to play it as you wish, get doxed by 10 people have suspicious packages arrive to your home with death threats. and then you either join the cult, or you get removed ?

I couldn't disagree with this video more. yeah I will admit there are some cringe elements to the fandom, which is inevitable for any fandom as big as undertale. That's the thing though, people can choose how much to interact with the fandom, or not at all. while yes, the shipping and sexual stuff can be pretty cringe, dude don't kink shame. Only real problem I see is people harassing streamers. Which is just wrong no matter how you look at it. The real reason the fandom has quieted down so much is simply the sheer length of time between games. No fandom is going to stay at its peak when new official content is only released once every five or seven years or so. Not that I blame Toby for taking so long, he can take his time as far as I'm concerned. Just that the length between releases is inevitably going to cause the fandom to go partly dormant. While yes, the fandom has its cringe elements, and some of the AU stuff is down right silly, there may be some bad apples and some people gatekeeping too hard. Ultimately though the fandom has produced some incredibly creative and wonderful things, that in my mind at least, far outweigh he bad. The fandom is far from dead, it is simply sleeping until the next episode of Deltarune comes out.

It's a bit presumptuous to say the that Undertale is dead. Its fandom very much alive, and has _significant_ overlap with the Deltarune fandom, which is basically just a subset of Undertale's community since most Deltarune fans were already Undertale fans when it came out. 6:45 I wouldn't say it was _the_ majority, since that's a pretty strong word and most fans of basically anything aren't super active. What I will say it's that it's a supremely loud and active subset of a very large fandom, with the fandom's overall size scaling this loud subset up as well. 8:15 Saying that it isn't in its golden means that it's dead is pretty disingenuous.
