Gringotts, Spiderman and Transformers would really suffer without 3D. They are designed around the gimmick. Skull Island: Reign of Kong without 3D is blurry, low Rez, and you can easily see the top and bottom of the screen now. Big downgrade to me. Fast and Furious needs 3D since the video was designed that way. The perspective is off, with curved building walls to Vin Diesel being 3x bigger than the helicopter etc. Taking 3D off of Minion Mayhem has been totally fine. Taking 3D away often hurts rides. The best solution is don't make new ones. Thank you, Epic Universe. But AR is just going to be the same thing over again. They are already talking AR with Pokemon and Louigi's Mansion.

The problem with 3D and screen-based rides in general is that I think you need some amount of physical props and effects to sell it. The reason Spider-Man still holds up is because of this.

@carrevenger31

I think it also depends on how real/intense the simulated movements are. Transformers is one of the better screen rides because of how they step up the motions and intensity with it, especially with how fast-paced it is. Forbidden journey and Simpsons are one of the better screen rides because with forbidden journey you feel like you’re flying through the air, and with the Simpsons the movements feel more bumpy and shaky, which makes it feel more like the sketchy roller coaster the ride is trying to be. I know Simpsons is considered one of the worse simulators of Universal compared to the other big ones, but hey, Simpsons would earn extra points because of its extra intensity and more immersive experience(imax dome) than despicable me and Jimmy Fallon would.

That's part of why I think that even though Gringotts is newer it sucks. It has some practical elements, but not a lot, and it's also not very thrilling. After that one exciting drop at the beginning you're just traveling from screen to screen in the dark.

@@Eaawesome59 Gringotts should have DEFINITELY should been more roller coaster than screen ride. It should have been more like Mummy. The screens could have been done during slow moving brake runs and then you launch into another coaster element. Not too intense or anything but, I would have preferred a setup like that. Imagine a launch at the end to break through the caves with screens around the launch showing the actual "escape."

As with many things, it works only in moderation. Universal Studios is oversaturated with 3D attractions, whereas Disney only has one, maybe two per park. It doesn't feel exhausted at Disney because you have plenty of other options and ride systems in their rides. And they seem to only commit to those effects when they know it's the best way to present it's respective attraction. Like Flight of Passage, or Star Tours, or Mickey's Philharmagic. They don't just slap it on EVERYTHING, and they have so many unique ways of using projection mapping and hologram-like effects that there are so many workarounds anyway.

There are still plenty of fans for 3D attractions. It really just depends on the ride itself and how it was created. For example, you said yourself the people still love the Amazing Spider-Man. No one is calling for that ride to lose its 3D and I wonder why... it's because people love it. So what's the takeaway... If a ride is executed exceptionally well that's all that matters.

I also want to point out that some rides while they may seem like they don't need 3D, they probably do. I heard people say that Kong is worse without the 3D and this has been the case for Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, although people stopped complaining about that one. Do I think more rides like Kong and Despicable Me shouldn't exist? Yes and No. Do I think more rides that don't use 3D and use physical sets should exist? Yes. I'm going to be honest I enjoy Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon. I don't know why, but I do remember the first time I got off that ride I was surprised by how much it moved and how realistic it felt with how it moved with what was going on on the screen. Even when I rode it the 2nd time I was still surprised and had fun on it. I want to add that this is one of the rides that when I wait for it, it feels like I'm waiting much less than how long the wait really is. While I am ok with Fast and Furious being in the park, there can obviously be something better in that land.
@graffiti.777

@@bryancurdi451yes I rode the Kong ride and despicable me ride without 3D and they're way worse. I believe they should just get rid of Jimmy Fallon, fast and furious, and possibly the Simpsons ride and replace them with rides or shows that almost completely rely on physical sets. I'd include despicable me but I think they should put the 3D back in it since they just made that whole minion land a thing. Same can be said for Kong.

@@graffiti.777 yeah I definitely agree I think Jimmy Fallon can stay the longest out of the three you mentioned. A lot of people think Fast and Furious is horrible so I think they would want to get rid of that. The Simpsons Ride while not the worse I think it is definitely going to go one because of the contract and two even though I'm not one to complain the last time or last two times I rode the Simpsons the screen didn't really look very clear, it looked like it was a bit blurry. I'm going to be honest I still don't know why I love the Jimmy Fallon ride because I don't even watch Jimmy Fallon, so I don't really mind that one staying for a while. 😂 Maybe love is a strong word for that ride, but I don't know there is just something I like about that ride.

A complaint I have with the big boys (Disney & Universal), is that they lack medium thrill in rides. It’s either kiddy rides or extreme thrill levels in rides. For someone like me that does get sick from screen rides, gets bored on kiddy rides, doesn’t enjoy feeling my stomach in my throat for too long and often, there really isn’t much for me to do at either parks. I like a good balance of thrill and chill. But, seems like many parks focus too much on either zero thrill rides, or rides for adrenaline junkies. They need to put more rides in that sit at a decent median. I feel having too many zero thrills and high thrill rides also cuts out a big demographic from wanting to visit their theme parks.

3D and Physical Sets are both great when done right, but imo its far better when both are prominent in parks. Maybe a land should have like 4 rides - 13D ride, 1 Coaster or another intense ride, 1 Family Ride, and a Kid Ride
@SmallSpoonBrigade

Possibly, but I think that there will continue to be advances in holographic technology that largely replaces the glasses for normal rides. The glasses make the most sense for slower moving rides where it's being used to augment the scene and expend it outwards. Faster moving rides, don't benefit as much as the eyes have a harder time keeping up with all that's going on and determining 2d versus 3d for things that are farther away.

It's a shame they took the 3D out of Kong, and any other ride. 3D is awesome. I wanna ride the forbidden journey in 3D. Most people enjoy 3D, especially when the ride is more of a hybrid. Avatar the way of water was awesome in 3D, and plenty of people bought that 3D ticket. They should give special 2D glasses to people who are lactose intolerant to 3D or whatever, lol. they do make those and they are simple and work well. I'm excited to try out some AR and VR too, but for most normal people, 3D will always be a cool and welcome feature that adds to the experience. If they could figure out glasses free 3D a la the 3DS, that'd be a game changer. Also, bring on the HOLOGRAMS!! 😯

Honestly I think it is more about screens than it is about 3D itself. Most discourse I see in park discussions and forums are complaints about any sort of screen based ride. People aren’t talking about whether it is 3D or not, but are just tired of screen based. When it is done well like Spider-Man at Universal it is good and people don’t care, but a basic simulator or stuff like Fast and Furious it feels lazy and isn’t as fun. Plus when you have a lot of rides that are screen based it doesn’t offer as much variety.
@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade 2 месяца назад
Which is unfair, a well done screen can add a lot to a ride. It blew me away watching the Bourne Stuntacular and having a genuinely hard time figuring out what was on the screen and what was really there. And most of the transitions between were done so smoothly that I only caught the transition a couple times. Admittedly, that's probably a very expensive set to build, but I think that over time, the cost will go down as they figure out how to bring similar techniques in smaller doses into rides that people don't even really recognize as being screens.

That Terminator 3D attraction will be my #1 fav ride EVER imo. Even after all their locations closed down. I’ve only been to the one in Hollywood in July of 2012 I think, but missed an opportunity to experience it (as a terminator 1 & 2 movie fan) in Orlando during last years’ visit with Bourne Stunt show. Wish I could’ve seen the Orlando version before it closed, just for the vip pass experience alone. Now, at least I can save some money without using it the next time I go to Universal Orlando. Again, imo, I have an open mind to screen rides/3D rides/dark rides in theme parks from past experience. I can see attraction ideas’ point as to people wanting more practical rides more than not. But for others like myself, I just hope the ride/attractions theme parks create are done well enough for me to ride it to begin with. Plus, I’ve been to universal parks more often than disney parks previously. Before 2021/22, I went to the CA Disney parks CA adventure was new during my middle/high school years. Yet I haven’t been to Disney world either. Nowadays I enjoy the Star Wars (casual fan), marvel (movie fan, and Indiana jones parts of CA Disney almost as much as the universal parks. I am among the group that thinks Spider-Man is still the gold standard of 3D rides. I went on it last year, and it's still great. Transformers basically repeated the formula and did well enough, but it's no Spider-Man. Escape from Gringott's...not so much, but I went on it without 3D so it looked like a blurry, uninteresting mess. As for Kong, the thing that kills me is that, if they'd waited a few years, they could've used the Monsterverse Kong and made a much cooler ride than what is there now. I mean, Jackson's Kong wasn't that hot when it came out, to say nothing of where it was at over a decade later. Seems like a pretty big blunder, considering how well the Monsterverse has done. As it is now, it's ok, I suppose, but nothing to write home about. At least they kept the giant animatronic head to maintain a little of the classic King Kong spirit (I never got to go on that ride, unfortunately).

Glad you made this video. I wondered why rides that began as 3D have been refitted to 2D (several at Universal - Minions, Forbidden Journey, etc.). I suppose there are enough guests who get motion sickness to warrant this on those rides that move them up, down, and sideways, and MAYBE the cost of glasses is a minor factor; however, without the 3D effect, I think these rides suffer. Hopefully, the future of dark rides will a blend of practical effects with multiple screens all layered to create depth (I think this is why rides such as Fast and Furious were not ultra successful - too much reliance on 3D only.

I don't know if I'm just old school or what, but I really am not entertained by screen based rides, except in a few minor circumstances. Back to the Future was good. But... there's very few screen based rides that entertained me anywhere near as much as rides with good animatronics, and crafty looking scenes. The thing I love about the animatronic dark rides of Disney is that they REALLY know how to present a scene to make it feel like you're really there in many cases. Disney really SHINES over Universal Studios with their ride designs, and it's always with the small details. And to me, those details count. When you go on a Disney ride, they hide all the lights and mechanical stuff REALLY well. You look up at the ceiling of the ride, you don't see lights or a ceiling. You'll see clouds and a night sky, for instance. When you go to Universal, no matter what the scene is, you look up, and it's a roof with lights on it. There's something... magical about that... detail that's completely missing in screen rides for me. I've never really enjoyed them. They often look like a Playstation game rather than a ride to me. I'm not saying that screen rides can't be done well, but the ones that are are few and far between, and have a great mix of physical animatronics, effects, and screens.

It's possible that AR might replace 3D, although alot of that tech is still years away from mass production (don't believe me, ask Goggle how Google Glass is going). But really, I still think we'll see screen-based attractions going forward for all the reasons you listed at the beginning. They're cheaper, take up less space, plus there's alot more you can do with a screen on the wall than you can props or animatronics that need updating and repairs. Personally I enjoy them, with or without the 3D, especially on attractions like Forbidden Journey or Transformers. I get to feel like I rode a big thrill ride without having to jump on the bigger, scarier roller coasters with 50 inversions and 90 mph accelerations (I can handle mid-sized and indoor coasters, anything bigger and it's one-and-done for me, IF you can even get me in line to ride). Heck I even explored the possibility of designing and testing my own simulator rides at one point I used to be so taken with them, if only the testing part wasn't so prohibitably expensive. The big mark for premium parks might still be building rides with physical sets and moving animatronics, but there's no getting around that sometimes it's just easier putting someone in a moving chair and having them watch a 15-minute movie to keep the lines for the E-ticket rides moving.

I wonder if as AR technology advances, we'll start to see 3D rides converted into AR rides like Mario Kart. I find the two technologies fairly similar (using two images to give screens depth) with AR being better since you are able to look around objects, adding to the realism. Probably would be expensive, but I can see it being a possibility as 3D ages out. Another note I'd like to add is that LED screen tech has evolved so much that 2D screens end up looking 3D because of how high the resolution is. LEDs also act as a light source, adding to the believability.

AR has some of the drawbacks of 3d with people who need to handle and maintain the hardware-which right now is even more costly than 3d since it is only on one ride that will have 3 versions minimum by next summer (two of which already running). Either it will be too costly to take off or enter the day to day more quickly than 3D limiting its growth in the industry regardless of cost

There is still room to make 3D and 4D rides, they just have to implement it better + swap them out for more modern iterations. Like Shrek 4-D for example, that is the same exact show for 2 decades now. I don't like Roller Coasters, so when friends/family go on a coaster I will go to a 3D ride in the mean time.

Many of rides and shows at MHS (Minnesota Historical Society) museums especially the Flower Tower ride and Weather Permitting show which shows experience of 1965 Fridley tornado by having a camouflaged theater to look like a period era basement for example both are examples of emphasis on physical sets and little use of screen based material instead of 3D. Given that Minnesota Historical Society has a tight budget than Disney or Universal which is due to Minnesota Historical Society getting both fundraising and funding from the state itself.

I feel like in recent years 3D has been used as a complete substitute for... a ride. The original spider man had scenery and effects to go with it. The websingers attraction used a cart to move people from screen to screen. If vr takes off the same way I could only imagine something similar happening. A cart will shuffle you to a blank space where animated characters appear only on your headset.

For being a mix of 3D and live action being the selling point, it relied way too much on the 3D portion. It was basically Shrek 4D with a few stunts sprinkled in at the beginning and end, except the seats barely moved at all. Bourne is a vastly superior mashup of screens and live stunts.

I feel like 3D was a really cool concept back in 2000 to 2012, but it got to much when Nintendo hopping on the trend with the Nintendo 3DS when this handheld console released I started to see the flaws. Like 3D is COOL if the video or Game was made with only 3D in mind. But most films weren't made for 3D but the movie theater is still trying to advertise it so when you buy it, you just get disappointed. A good example is when Disney rereleased Finding Nemo in 3D just to be a waste of time for the viewer and the theater hosting it.

I think that's a large part of why they're going out of favor. Just about every ride in Universal Hollywood required some motion sickness consideration, although Universal Orlando wasn't so bad. It's a shame, but if you're working in a tight space, there aren't that many options and 3d can be rather appealing.
@guardianofcreativity4860

My problem with 3D rides is they make me motion sick and it’s awful. The one time I’ve gone to universal I spent most of the day feeling nauseous because I’d have to take breaks between rides. I love Transformers and was excited to ride it, but I had to keep my eyes closed for nearly all of it to stop from getting too sick and all I remember is being miserable the whole time and sad that I couldn’t see the giant robots. So yeah, I’m not a big fan of 3D rides and screens in general. They can be used well, but it’s gotta be in moderation. For now, there’s just a massive portion of some theme parks I can’t experience without getting sick and it makes those parks very unappealing.

I always disliked 3D rides because putting the 3D glasses over my eyeglasses (not a fan of contacts), really disengaged me from the immersive experience they were supposed to be. Spiderman is such a masterpiece of a ride that I'll never have a problem with. But if it's only screens? Like Kong and Fast & Furious? They are just making us watch movies. And the utmost laziness and cost-cutting of those experiences can easily be seen. I mean, the Fast & Furious 'characters' looked like they jumped straight out of GTA3. If they made the experience more realistic (like changing the vehicles of high-capacity bland trams to lower-capacity cars from the series), or added more to the scenery (maybe an adventure around the world and not just a chase in LA)...then mayyybe it can be forgiven. But most of these screen attractions are bland and soulless, especially the ones in Universal Studios.

Not sure where you get your source on this, but 3D has existed and still exists on Forbidden Journey in Orlando, Florida at this very moment. - From someone who's been going on Forbidden Journey since before it officially opened to the public in 2010. From what I heard, key word heard cause I never been to Hollywood's version, but I heard that they installed it as usual, but changed it to 2D less than a year of operation due to the motion sickness complaints. I've heard the complaints about FJ since it's opened, but maybe it's not reported as much in Orlando, or since it's the "OG" they don't want to take a main element of the attraction away? Not sure, but yeah... It's been 3D since before it literally opened officially to the public so not sure where you got, "they added 3D last minute because of the hype" from, especially since they've been making 3D attractions for awhile, as you also pointed out, so it was kind of a given. It was even compared to "Spiderman" when it first came out amongst park goers. You might be confused with Japan's FJ as I heard that one opened 2D, but eventually I guess didn't care about the potential motion sickness complaints, because then they converted it to 3D eventually after a year of operation. So Japan decided to do the opposite of Hollywood, not sure why, but I guess they felt the 3D was necessary.
