Don't remember that quote of his. There is the GK Chesteron one: "Fairy tales, then, are not responsible for producing in children fear, or any of the shapes of fear; fairy tales do not give the child the idea of the evil or the ugly; that is in the child already, because it is in the world already. Fairy tales do not give the child his first idea of bogey. What fairy tales give the child is his first clear idea of the possible defeat of bogey. The baby has known the dragon intimately ever since he had an imagination. What the fairy tale provides for him is a St. George to kill the dragon."

I think the biggest issue of modern Hollywood is their disdain toward their audience. A lot of them see us common movie-goers as not much more than scum of the earth. How can you properly entertain somebody if you hate their guts? I don’t think it’ll ever be as effective that way

It seems to be men in particular imo…I’ve got no problem with strong female characters, but it always feels as though it’s at the detriment of the male characters. They have to make the male character bad or useless rather than just making the female character good or just superior on her own merits
@neillindgren8992
@neillindgren8992 2 года назад
@@GIBBO4182 That ends up cheapening the female character when they make them appear strong at the expense of male characters (so are they actually strong, or just the toughest weakling?). Also, sometimes it makes their strength look like the strength of diamond - hard enough to cut through most things, but likely to shatter the first time there’s true resistance, because unlike classical true tough women like Sarah Connor or Ellen Ridley, they never suffer much (or any) adversity to toughen them up during their rise.

If u look carefully its all beginning to look like the staunch femanist have the wheel. In the 90s in UK there was a 'Lad Culture' even the female stars in UK were nicknamed 'Ladettes'... they adopted strong masculine traits. Drinkin beer, rude language, leary behaviour.... Its bizzare watching the shift. Would of been better if it was fused together with female roles and male roles all being produced side by side. But no, the females hold all the direction and output... strange!!!

It's the melancholy of people who know their culture has been parasitzed. The heroic individual is a threat to the collectivist. It is the heroic individual who has the courage to stand against wrong and evil even when they are alone and know they will lose. Of course the forces of woke want to eliminate that role model, it's a threat to their project of socially engineered uniformity and equity. How can everyone be equal if a select few are extraordinary? It's the same reason the people that screech about "fat shaming" fight campaigns to remove ads of fit women in bikinis. The very concept of ideals threatens them, mocks them, so they do everything they can to tear them down. The ideal is a point of aim, not an expectation or a requirement. It's a representation of what we should orient ourselves towards in life, not an expectation of what we have to achieve. Rather than acknowledge that they (and almost all of us) fall short while resolving to try to do better, they attack the ideal. They are great just as they are, ideals are oppressive, it's a white male patriarchy conspiracy to keep them down, etc. All of that jumble of thoughts I just puked out goes a long way to explain the motivation of people writing modern movies. I'm not religious, but you can almost see it as a revolt against God himself. I don't think it is a coincidence that the same people that have destroyed the classic hero are also busy putting the "gay agenda" into everything they create, attack the traditional family as oppressive, and celebrate hedonism and gluttony. Why deny your base appetites for something difficult and sometimes painful to obtain? Just stay here with us on pleasure island....

Motivation is what separates the hero from the antihero or the simple protagonist. Is the audience on the central character's side (if at all) because they believe in what he's doing, or just because they're the person that the story's following, and so identify with the character by simple continued association? Is The Man With No Name the "hero" of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, or is he just the best of the three? Is Max the "hero" of The Road Warrior, and doesn't the answer hinge on why one believes he decides to drive the rig during the escape? Doing the extraordinary simply isn't enough; it has to be done for the right reasons.
@joumero7493

Yes I would argue, “that’s what heroes do” being the motivation is the weakest possible thing. Instead those soldiers laid down their lives because they were the only thing standing between the monstrous horde and their wives and children. Sam gave half his food to and carried Frodo at the end because that’s his best friend and he loves him. It’s a bit more than “we have to complete the mission.”

Writers are paralyzed by fear of accidentally supporting the "patriarchy"; not that they could clearly define it if asked. Like many ideas it has become a conceptual boogieman that will steal their kidney while they sleep if they depict a man as self-assured and calm in adverse situations. The presence of the selfless father figure who does what is necessary, in life and in movies, is less and less. The guy who puts his own interest on the back burner for the greater good. Your video essay on "Written by Children, for Children" exposed the sad fact that writers pander to younger audiences so much that they've muddied the definition of such traits as strength, adulthood, manhood, etc... I was in the Marine infantry from '08 to -12, and even then saw what I called "misguided masculinity", which featured impulsive, childish behavior rebranded as "taking care of business" or "being a man". The idea that you get what's best for you alone, leveraging your position at the expense of others. To find a selfless father figure in a leadership position was rare, and those are the types most needed everywhere, not just the military or the workplace. We need more stoic, hardy humans in movies.

I know it's not from the book or in Return of the King but Sam's quote "There's some good in this world and it's worth fighting for" really encapsulates the conflict between fans and the people trying to use popular IP's as a soapbox for their own political ideology. There are powerful lessons people take away from these books, films and what have you. They stick with us, they become a part of us and we instinctually can feel when those morals are being violated. It's up to us to keep the flame lit and pass it to the next generation. However, despite the regret, fear and panic you can hear in his voice as he calls out to Frodo he immediately rushes into action to protect Merry and Pippin and to sound the Horn of Gondor to warn the rest of his companions about the danger they are in. Even at the cost of his own life. *That* is how you write a good yet flawed character! Boromir wasn’t perfect, *but* he was a good and honest man! But no, todays Hollywood would have him be a snivelling, egotistical coward that has been a complete asshole throughout the entire movie that would die begging for his life. Why? Because the hacks in todays Hollywood doesn’t know what they are doing or why they are losing money.

Boromir was definitely one of the most realistic characters in the movies. Yes! I'm glad to read this :) I've always felt for Boromir and I know some people that had a "serves him right" type of attitude toward him or that he was weak and left it at that. I think this is a mistake. Anytime I reread or rewatch the trilogy I always feel so much sadness for him but he fights like a lion at his end and it is simultaneously heartbreaking and inspiring to see it. We can relate to his fallibility but also his will to do the right thing, protect, and make amends. I agree though, you're probably right as to how he would be written today and that is so unfortunate.

I heard a very poignant quote that rings pretty true in this regard: "We have gone from being an honor society to being a victim society." In the words of The Drinker, "Jesus wept."

@@CoryTheRaven I'd respectfully disagree with your premise. I'd argue that morality and honor are both facets of a civilized society based upon principle. Both parts of an overarching whole, rather than exclusive replacements of one another. Now, I certainly think a solid case can be made for morality and empathy having paved the way for the rise of this victim society. If we as empathetic and moral people do our absolute best to not offend or take advantage of others, those who are devoid of such qualities have ruthlessly used that against us. The biggest folly is that it's taken us far too long to call people out for this.

@@yukoncharlie2 and I respectfully disagree with you. Honour cultures are focused on how you are SEEN, morality cultures are focused on what you DO. Honour cultures are where you have people murdering their daughters for dishonouring the family name and bullshit like that. I saw this all the damn time as an educator when working with kids from certain cultures. They were never sorry for their actions, just for getting caught, if they ever felt that admitting fault was too beneath them to begin with. One could make the case that morality and empathy lead to victim culture, but victim culture is a kind of honour culture in its own perverse way.
@yukoncharlie2
@yukoncharlie2 2 года назад
@@CoryTheRaven I think both of our points hold merit, as it seems we're referencing different definitions and uses of the word 'honor'. I completely agree that the perverse interpretation of honor in some cultures is abhorrent. However, honor in the sense of duty, doing the right thing, taking the hard road, taking ownership and responsibility, and serving one's fellow man and the greater good is what I'm referring to. That's what I think goes hand-in-hand with morality. I'm just making an observation here and this truly isn't a slight, but you were very quick to throw Christianity specifically into the conversation as something that has helped lead to the downfall of society in general. But then you reference specific practices from honour cultures that I'd venture a guess are not rooted in Christianity. Why not call out the organized religion that these cultures are rooted in? If they're not rooted in any specific religion that's fair enough, but it seems like a double standard to me. Again, no disrespect, just an observation...

I'm 48 years old. I had the privilege of seeing Star Wars in the theaters in the summer of '77, twice. It was a bigger deal back then because money was tighter (especially for a Navy family) and going to the theater was an experience. It was months before my 4th birthday but I have vivid memories of that experience, most especially the audience booing Darth Vader when he would come on the screen and erupting in cheers at the end. On both occasions, the fade to credits resulted in a standing ovation. It was obviously formative. Needless to say, I was certainly disappointed with the most recent Star Wars efforts, and yes, I share in the disdain for The Last Jedi, perhaps without quite so much vitriol. There was certainly a deal of character assassination involved with that movie; messaging, absolutely; and bad filmmaking combined with ideas I disagree with or that fell flat. Rey is an obvious caricature, not a character. She lacks flaws and is overpowered. Luke was destroyed, yes. But I didn't overreact to any of this. I disagreed and was willing to leave it at that, that it was a terrible movie and I had made up my mind not to see Episode 9. However, I had my kids with me, and they were discussing scenes they liked. My son mentioned the infamous "broom boy" at the end, which in a forgettable film happened to be the thing that stuck in my craw. Of all the miserable elements conspiring to make such a putrescent cinematic experience, I explained to my kids why that scene was the most destructive. Perhaps it condenses the mantra of Disney, the modern world, the younger generations, whatever the case may be. It's the notion that anyone can be anything...*and* to have to explain that in a measured, responsible way to 2 children who will one day (hopefully) become responsible people of their own, with active, rational minds. Maybe it's a symptom of the post-facts world we live in, but the notion that anyone can just discard blatant laws of physics, disregard the fact that some are born taller, faster, smarter, what have you. It's nice to aspire, but within reality's bounds. Otherwise everyone would be astronauts, or the running back for the Giants, or the league MVP of the NBA. I think this is the fallacy plaguing Hollywood: that the writers used to be the smart ones too ugly to be on camera, but superbly talented. The modern screenwriters and idea people are just treated as if they have the same degree of *natural* talent as those previous individuals, by people who don't have the capacity to recognize it.

I never thought of this part until now, often the first announcements or interviews with "creators" after releasing a woke version of something is how bad the franchise/subject was before this movement, and glee at the anticipated negativity from fans. No humility, no respect for the work that was already done to give the creators that existing foundation. I read somewhere society is creatively bankrupt right now. But it's worse than that, what we actually have is open warfare on the ideas and stories which uphold the values that taught us the importance of not giving up those same values. This is seen as the new virtue, and is literally the objective in so many of these (stolen) creations.

Of course I recognized how cool these other characters were but I admired the gleaming, heroic spirit of these peerless personas of heroism. Even back when I was a young kid I realized that most of my friends liked Han and Batman and other such characters because they liked the unrestrained freedom of the characters. They thought being Superman was lame because he never broke any bones, he never got to really hurt anyone. I realized they probably didn't actually want to be a genuine hero, they just wanted the power fantasies. Meanwhile, I loved Superman because he always saved the day with a smile on his face and that big S puffed out on his chest. I loved how he always did what was right. Probably why I'm such a stickler for the rules now but I try not to he a stick in the mud. My point in all this is to say I think the lack of heroism in out modern heroes is perhaps in some ways related to this diluted mindset of what heroism is. This idea that what makes someone a hero is the power to enact change and doing something to push society towards some vague direction of "better". But in reality what is played out on screen is mostly just a vapid power fantasy with a thin veneer of heroism laid over it. Not long after that many people started berating the series and our dear Drinker released a few videos explaining some of the shit the writers have done to the show. RIP, _Doctor Who_ 1963 - 2015

There is an idealized heroic man in every little boy. I grew up reading Edgar Rice Burroughs, Jack London, I never had a plan simply a desire for the gentleman's adventure story like Richard Francis Burton. I graduated from High School a year early was in the USMC reserves at age 17. Lied about my age and worked as a cooler in bars owned by the mob at age 19. Back into the USN SAR. Corporate Security, PMC, a civil war in Guatemala, a civil war in Yemen, tracking through five continents of adventure and danger. A wonderful beautiful virtuous wife great children and never a hero merely inspired and perhaps a bit bored. The difference between a hero and a fool is a zig or a zag and a bit of luck and either take some self confidence.

Being a teacher, I can say that this is absolutely correct. Right now, the 20 something generation can't write about something not directly related to their life. Look at all the Marvel TV shows. The characters you see are basically the writer's life written into a super hero. Only thing is, they can't write about being a hero because they can't imagine being a hero. Mostly because they're completely selfish.

I'm sorry that Hollywood has done that and ruined the experiences of young people like yourselves. I remember when I was in college back in the '80's. I had started reading comics again after a 7 year hiatus. I stopped reading them when I was 13 because I was getting into sports, and they were written more for little kids back then. I did play AD&D off and on to satisfy my inner nerd. What changed my mind about comics was an article that I read in Wizard Magazine and Dragon Magazine about Miller's "Return of the Dark Knight" and "The Fall of the Mutants." It was then that I visited my first Comic Book Store when I was 20 years old. I bought a huge stack of comics which made the guy behind the counter stare at them and me for a minute. I told him about my hiatus, and my need to make up for lost time, and he responded by welcoming me back. I felt like I had finally returned home, and I bought more every Thursday when they would release the new titles. I dreamed that one day they would make Marvel movies that didn't suck when Tim Burton's Batman movie came out the next year. (You've probably guessed my age by now: 55). 😉 I even thought up some ideas of my own. Little did I know that my dream would turn into a nightmare. Ray Bradbury got it wrong. You don't destroy books by burning them. You destroy them by perverting them or burying them in a mound of other shitty books. But we can learn from "Fahrenheit 451." They preserved the books by memorizing them, so they could one day return them to print. We can preserve the art of the past by purchasing as much as we can and preserving it. DON'T purchase electronic print or purchase from Streaming Services. Those can be changed and deleted. Purchase hard copies. DVD's, Books, Records. Purchase them while you still can and preserve them carefully. I learned how to do that with my comic collection. Read as much as you can to keep your mind active, so you can remember and pass on this knowledge to others. Avoid society's new versions of Memory Holes. One day the people will have another Renaissance. They will find these lost art pieces just like western Europeans did when they traveled to Constantinople during the Crusades. It will open up a new age of hope and exploration. To quote Abraham Lincoln at the Wisconsin State Agricultural Society: "And this too shall pass away."

What caught my attention was Pippen's journey to maturity. Especially when he had to be separated from Merry. When the steward had him sing for him as the soldiers were marching to their doom and Pippen was describing the occasions hobbits sang their songs he looks directly at Denethor as emphasis when he said, "...evil times". At the end when they're saying goodbye to Frodo, Merry is devastated but Pippen, although emotional as well, looks at peace with Frodo having to leave. It made a very striking visual to demonstrate how much he matured throughout their quest.

I remember growing up my favourite films were Gladiator, Braveheart, Troy, the Lord of the Rings films and The Patriot. Flawed yet strong heroic male characters who usually paid the ultimate sacrifice in order to save the day for those they have sworn to protect or avenge. Now, every single one of those characters is "toxic masculinity" and as you gents touched on, examples of historic misogyny and racist stereotypes of a bygone age... Many of those stories are timeless for a reason. They were inspiring to 13 year old me who was getting bullied at school, to stand up for others who had the same dealt to them. Inspired to make myself better than those around me who wanted nothing more than to tear me down for not being a "thug" like them. Where are those characters for this generation of boys to look to???

There will always be shitters, rapists, murderers, and warmongerers in every generation, but let us not forget those who did their duty to stand up against such things. Many of the heroes who fought and died or fought and survived to return home battered by war were normal people who chose to do their part. The fact that this generation refuses to acknowledge that means they don't believe not just that other people can do what is right, but that there is a right and a wrong... at least until somebody does something they disagree with, and then they have a meltdown rather than standing up with noble intent... because they don't know how to do that and don't believe it exists.

I miss men and women working together using their strengths and covering for each other’s weaknesses (e.g Han, Leia, and Luke). I don’t want to watch a woman kick a man across the room unless there is reasonable justification for why she has the power to do it (e.g. Wonder Woman). I want women of war to be the exception, not the rule (e.g. Eowyn). I grew up a child of the 80’s enjoying female representation in film. Now it has been just OBNOXIOUS. A creator's motivations, I believe, will always be inherently shown in their characters. If a creator makes something, whether it be a book or a movie or a TV show, out of a genuine love for a franchise or a piece of intellectual property, it will show in the care taken to write that character, and you'll walk away better for just having related to that character, no matter what race or gender or whatever that character is. But if a creator makes something just to spite the people who came before, then you know the character is empty and vacuous for that very same reason - they show no care for it, they're just out to destroy it. They are, by nature, unable to have that character do something heroic - because there's nothing noble there, because there was never an authorial intent for the character to *be* noble. And it presents a dangerously warped moral viewpoint, because the kind of selfless sacrifice or courage in the face of fear isn't just absent, it's almost reviled nowadays, simply because it's part of the "old tradition" that we need to "get rid of", according to these people. It's a remarkably terrifying prospect, all said.

Except one old man. Perfectly timed (there was a perfect pause in the scene... Goosebumps) he said "No, not to men like you." He had no super powers, he was old and probably wouldn't even land a punch against him. Fear probably radiated out of him. Yet he was willing to get shot by Loki (of course cap came in and saved him, which also, in itself is amazing because he represents what America is suppose to be and protecting that man represents that). But he didn't know cap was coming then. He just stood their saying no even when he knew death was coming. All because he didn't want to knell to a man like Loki. Which is a whole other thing. You guys, Ragaholic, itsAGundum, and Yellowflash…..all on a live stream…..that would be beyond awesome…..although it would have serious repercussions for the known universe, I’d risk it! Together, you all encompass my favorite channels…..keep up the great work!

Here's a shocking revelation: girls and women can also be inspired by heroic men. It's not just attractive, but motivational.

My buddy's daughter, as a four-year-old, used to tell people her career ambition was "to kill bad guys". Her parents raised her on westerns, Magnum PI, Burn Notice, and basically whatever else her dad watched. She requested a Bowie knife for her 15th birthday, because Arthur Morgan used one.

I have felt the decline of the hero first hand. I work in the ER, and when the coof first broke out, we went to work to do our duty, we did the extra hours, sometimes even up to 48h shifts, we did all that was asked and required of us and more, with barely any protection gear. We were lauded as heroes, we got some coffee on the house here, some bakery snacks there, we didn't ask for them but it was nice to get them. Then we were asked to get the jab, then we were told to get the jab, when some of us refused, we were villified. We just wanted to continue working, but we were told we are the monsters now...

In time all whole serve the system will find themselves in a similar position. But remember, without those who serve the system, we would be free of it...

My favourite heroic moment from the books was when Frodo turned and faced Schelob. He didn't slay a giant monster or fight a battle, he just stopped fleeing and walked steadily towards something that terrified him.

Love the new Reacher series, no pretension or grandstanding, just faithful adaption of the source material. Would love to see Drinkers thoughts on it.

Ok I know this is not going to happen but god damn I wish you guys would be able to write the LOTR new adaptation because you guys have the passion of what a story telling should be and have sense enough to respect what was set by the author himself.

I remember the good old days when "subverting expectations" wasn't some kind of weird code talk meaning "we're going to completely fuck this up" in a clearly angry and hateful way because we don't like what the original person did or we didn't like who the original person was. They put a finger right on it with the whole situation with Amazon all they wanted was the license they didn't give a damn about anything Tolkien actually wrote they just wanted the ability to take the world and do with it what they would. It's sick and twisted but it very much feels in line with current politics and attitudes. And of course when it inevitably crashes and burns they'll blame it everything besides the actual quality of the show.

I think Amazon should have left Tolkien’s work alone and instead should of bought film rights to the elder scrolls. Granted they’d fuck that up too. But coincides more with what they went for

This is why Game of Thrones is completely inferior. Heroism is punished and subverted all the way through it.

In the environment the story was written, it was a refreshing take. It's not GoT's fault that the cultural zietgeist shifted to malicious commie agitprop.

Game of Thrones had different dramatic goals from LOTR. The latter was about heroism and moral victory. The former was about politics and history, and how these 2 things interact with and cloud our perception of heroism and mythology.

GOT and LOTR are two different narratives. LOTR was about "giving your all, pushing past your limits, friendship, etc". As in contrast GOT mirrors IRL history were sometimes the bad guy is the one who dies peacefully in his sleep. History isnt always kind to the ones that give the most, love the most, or have the biggest heart. Sometimes history rewards those with the most and got there by any means. Thats why people like GOT, they relate more to it, because they see it everyday. As for LOTR its target audience was for people that are looking for inspiration, escapism, or they just love seeing the bad guy get the crap beat out of him. Are any of these wrong? No, ofc not, its subjective. People are going to like what they like, nothing you can do about it.
