Have you ever applauded an aircraft landing? Or are you in the group that finds it wrong and unacceptable? Opinions are divided as to whether it’s a good or bad thing to do. I’m a flight attendant and I’ve noticed the trend that it happens mostly when big groups are travelling together or they’re coming back home/going to a special place. In my experience it happens when I do the “welcome to (destination)” i personally don’t mind, I find it cute

I personally don't clap upon landing. But I remember coming into Heathrow from Lusaka in 2007 we had to circle London multiple times after a 10-hour flight because we were in a queue of 8 to 10 aircraft waiting to land. Many people clapped upon touch down. The female pilot was very reassuring regarding the fuel situation and may have got us bumped up a place or two in the queue to ensure we didn't get too low on fuel. Perhaps that contributed to the clapping mood of some people.

I fly with Aerolineas Argentinas often and on every single flight, domestic and international people ALWAYS CLAP!. I love it. As a person who understands how hard it is to land a plane, clapping is to congratulate a pilot on completing a hard task which only very few in the world can pull off.

Landing really isn't *that* hard. Sure it's not as easy as parking a bus, but if you're an airline pilot take-off/landing should be second nature.

I'm a flight attendant for Spirit Airlines. I can tell you from experience that people always clap upon landing in Puerto Rico. I've witnessed applause when the flight FINALLY departs after being delayed for one reason or another (which may or may not be within the crew's control - one a recent flight, the pilots literally had to turn the plane off and on again to get the flight systems to behave - I wonder if Airbus technical support told them to do that) I also have a friend/colleague who is also into aviation and is very excitable. We both hold PPLs and have made many flights in small planes (Cessnas, etc.), and the closest I've witnessed to applauding on landing was on a private flight when he yelled out "woohoo" on touchdown

The only time I clapped after landing was after a turbulent night-time landing in a thunderstorm after a 6-hour flight. That was a genuinely scary landing, and I have never been so glad to feel the brakes of a plane come on. Edit: I might also have clapped after a crosswind landing in fog so thick I'm not sure how it was permitted. In general, if a landing is particularly difficult, I'll clap. Otherwise, I probably won't.
@elyannouh8880
@elyannouh8880 2 года назад
Usually when there is fog, there is no wind. Wind dissipates fog. So I can't picture a crosswind landing in thick fog... Landings in thick fog are permitted because systems have proven capable of guiding an aircraft on final all the way to touchdown, given some precautions are taken (and they are when the weather gets bad). But then again, when it happens, wind is calm of null.
@squeaksquawk4255

@@elyannouh8880 It might not have been crosswind. I thought it was. Also, it was on an island so that might have contributed.

The only time I would ever clap is if it is clear that the Pilots’ skills were tested to their limit during flight or landing, whether by accident recovery (such is the case with the Southwest example mentioned) or extreme weather, or in the case of a retirement flight where it is the Pilot’s last landing. It’s cringe to say the least when passengers do it on a normal flight, but in cases where it is earned it can be a welcome change (and morale booster for the flight crew).

If they're happy doing that then so be it, at most it's only a very brief and minor inconvenience. People should learn to just mind their own business and not always have stick up their behind. It's not illegal to clap and it is also not harming anyone.

I remember when I was 10 or something, I was landing in Maputo (FQMA) from Quelimane (FQQL) that we were put into a holding pattern for 30 minutes or more because the President was in the aerospace. This was around the time of the crash of TM407 and we were on the same model (Embraer 190) so naturally the people were a little nervous. When the plane landed almost every passenger clapped and you could feel the relief of the people. I think clapping isn't necessarily bad, especially when you are not a plane nerd and if you are afraid of flying (which was most likely the case of my fellow passengers)

I don't clap when a plane lands. Then again, I have been associated with the aviation industry for several decades. To me, a landing, while it is the most difficult part of the flight, should be routine for the aircrew. The only time I would think it would be acceptable to clap is if there was a malfunction or some other difficulty in flight that the aircrew handled well and got us back on the ground safely.
