I'm so glad you talked about the down-the-center no-panning background vocals. To me, that's one of THE defining sounds of 80s rock shout-choruses. It makes it feel like the whole band is shouting along with the chorus, which was a huge part of that 80s hair metal party vibe everyone seemed to go for.
@CadeRoberts

Yes! I remember the RU-vidr I mentioned in the video, Bobby Huff, talking about how a lot of ELO backups were mono which is what first got me thinking about that. For a long time I just panned things out wide without even thinking about it since it seems counterintuitive to have what's supposed to be a huge vocal moment just panned mono! haha So glad to have made that observation though!

One huge thing you forgot on this tune, that has been talked about in many interviews, is the pre-chorus guitar. There were not strummed, they played each note separately, so that it would sound like a keyboard. Mutt said he wanted that sound, so that you wouldn't hear the strumming of the strings. It's pretty noticeable when you compare yours to theirs. Other than that, very spot on! Great vid.

This is the first time I've had enough time to watch these two videos all the way through. It's an amazing amount of work and talent that you put into this and it shows. Just being able to recreate those tones and beats is a major feat in itself, but you've done an excellent job.

One of the things that always stood out to me about the cymbals on the Hysteria album is that they have some sort of modulation effect on them. I think it's some sort of light flange or a light and watery chorus effect. Not sure, because I've never tried to recreate what they're doing.

Brilliant job! Just to let you know, they played this with thin metal picks. On the backing vocals, you forgot about the whisper technique, but they sound really good anyway. Finally, there was another Rockman knockoff that Nigel Green (engineer) said they used on this tune, possibly on the clean sound, called a JHS Rockbox, sold in America as The Ross Rockbox. Over all you did a fantastic job brother! Aarrgghh - Pirate Phil.

Oh God. Now I am listening to the whole album. What have you done? Seriously. I was between school and mandatory army service (in Germany), and doing a shitty supermarket job to make some money. The album just came out. I was a die hard Pyromania fan. And then... Hysteria. Every lunch break I grabbed something to eat, walked to a nearby park, had the album on my walk man and blasted through it. Every single day. No idea how often I listenend to that album each week. But it was a lot. Some memories... are just the best.

@@imnotasimp7440 Mutt wanted to make that Rock/Pop crossover and he managed it perfectly. Regarding Sheffield there were a few bands that made quite an imprint on the 80’s scene that all grew up within about 3 miles of each other. The Human League, ABC, Heaven 17 and of course Leppard all managed to sell a good few records between them. All started out playing the same little club.

There is some real Joe Elliott undertones to that vocal. Sir, please consider me impressed. Likewise, the instrumentation is pretty much spot on with the attention to detail in the timed echoes and the plate reversed it. Isn't somehow supermerky, which was also equally impressive on the original hysteria album?Yeah, this is all cool stuff.Dude well done

Hey Cade, I just watched this and I think you did an amazing job recreating this track! All the details really add up beautifully, and I got a bunch of cool new ideas to try - - low tom sample with snare - mono stacked BV’s to create solidity and a more chorused/phasey sound - the Dolby trick (had heard of this before, but nice to be reminded) - that solid state Gallien Krueger tone, so close to that Rockman tone - that extra track of guitar, heavily EQd to add certain frequencies and harmonics your were missing - triple tracked vocals for more cohesion Really great. Feel free to do more breakdowns like this! Your covers sound great too, I will have to listen to more of these.

Thanks, learnt a lot. That Mutt Lange layering of vocals and guitar and the excitement and dynamic sound that brings to what is really a simple song. I’ve played with that before but never quite had it work for me so this gives me some good ideas there. You’re not quite Joe Elliot though but good work!

To get the clean sound in the verse, do what The Edge does, use a Herdim pick upside down (the bumpy part) and your 90% there. It will probably even give you those other artifacts you recreated when it echoes. It really sounds like they are using something rough for a pick.

I think you're right on with pumping the mids on the X100 sound. The Boston/Sholz sound was very mid heavy. Curious what the details are of the Rockman's chorus and delay. Seems to me it should be possible to do it in-the-box.

I'm going to record and mix the new album of my band soon and I gotta admit, I've learned a lot today that I will use for sure. Thanks man, subbed. One question though, did you use plugins for the guitars, amps or preamp pedals ?

The clean guitars were the Gallen Kruger amp recorded direct out plus a clean DI blended in. And the distorted electrics were a Marshall Silver Jubilee mic'd up. So, no amp sims or plugins besides basic EQ or compression possibly
