My favourite bird call nemonic device is the “Who Cooks for You” call from Barred Owls. I heard it for the first time with my dad and we both started jumping with excitement since previously we had only heard it on audio recordings!
Wingsandbeaks here.@ Badgerland ~ Am here fresh from watching Stefano’s videos for the first time, including the challenge he threw out to you and your friend to find some wonderful birds. Forty + years of backyard birding has taken a huge leap forward seeing your channel and others’ for the first time. I’m from North Central Oklahoma and see so much of what Stefano has seen around his ponds. Can’t wait to discover what you and your friends have to offer.
Looking forward to part two. Just getting into watching your videos and enjoying them! Not sure where I fit on this spectrum of bird people, though. I love birds but rarely got out looking for them, except on my own property. For me, the challenge is to get them to come to me.
1:01:05 It's easier to miss Sandhill Crane than you might think! It was my 328th life list species, and even then I got lucky when they flew over my apartment in Vermont.
Very glad to find this video exists! I was just thinking about icebergs and birds and wondering if there was one, so im super happy to have found this channel. I want to add to the discussion of the feral cats section. While outdoor cats are a huge problem for birds and are a related issue, they're not the same as feral cats. Feral cats are domesticated cats "gone wild", the result of strays breeding into their own population. Here in Australia feral cats are such a huge issue because they don't just stick around humans like outdoor pet cats would- they live in the bush independently and wipe out species that have not evolved with them as a threat, far into reserves. Feral cats here have almost exclusively wildtype tabby patterns, and are physically much larger than the average cat. Speciation in action. It might be different in the US, since there's more predators, but in my experience they're their own beast. Keeping cats indoors and neutering them is still a related issue because it prevents feral populations from establishing.
As an animal enthusiast I kind of skipped to the ivory bill woodpecker without going through the binocular phase of my life 😂 great video brothers! I really enjoyed it
We made a video about looking for Barred Owls, but Owling can be tricky because some people oppose using playback and stuff like that. We’ll see what we can do! Here’s the Barred Owl video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iwZvKadzNWs.html
Soon after I began to notice birds someone told me that birding is a disease where the symptoms get increasingly worse. Its hard to say where I place in this ice burg. I haven't done several items on the Bird enthusiast level. I have done some things as far down as Birding group Admin.
Thanks! Great concept guys, learned a lot. Can’t believe you didn’t mention the Portlandia gag “put a bird on it!” during your arts/craft/culture segment. + No mention of the Academy’s Best Picture of 2015? Shame! Greetings from Beloit, backyard birding paradise.
I love this a lot and can relate to a ton of things on this list. I would love to hear your thoughts on subspecies and chasing/adding these to your life list, as some subspecies are rare. Example I found a Ipswitch sparrow( which is a sub species of Savannah Sparrow) In Virginia last week which is incredibly rare and the people actually sent me a letter from ebird thanking me for reporting the sub species due to they are threatened and they are studying there movements closely.
Awesome video guys, and thanks for the movie didn’t know about it, and maybe you seen it already if not you should check out, twitchers a British obsession here on RU-vid good documentary
I don't know if anyone else has ever done this, but how about matching the scrolling bird list at the end of "The Big Year" to the pictures of those birds? If you do it you'll find they don't actually match up all the birds, they just use a lot of pictures of the same species.
Gulling is easy when you first start birding, then when you think about it more it becomes difficult, then you learn the common species and it becomes easy again, and then you go gulling a lot and realize you actually know nothing
Yeah my kid isnt here, so her murder she feeds was complaining the whole time I was out birding today. I only realized this after I got back and they were all waiting for me and screaming, in the place where we feed the horses. Kind of intimidating LOL. Come to think of it I better go give them their snack right now LOL
