I started with used cheap Everlast gloves 🤦♂️.When I got my first pair of Twins I was amazed at the padding and quality. It was like going from a slim jim to a steak meal. You're review is real fair and helpful. Thanks, bro.
dudeee, I used everlast for like my first year because of the accessibility (this was before online shopping ever really existed) and damn I remember my first pair of real boxing gloves (thaismai) I was like 🤯. THE DIFFERENCE! thanks for watching, appreciate the feedback!
Unsurprising, as coach vik is a Tragedy fan, this video was insightful and no BS--which is what I expect from a hardcore fan. I'm just starting Muay Thai as part of my workout routine at the gym and I just picked up a pair of Fairtex gloves. They're really nice and I hope to use them for a year and see where I go. The Cleto Reyes and Boon gloves look really cool too. Thanks!
yooo- Welcome to the sport and thanks for watching. Boon gloves are super rad too, kinda hard to get a pair (ordering and shipping) but love the ones we have around the gym. good luck man 🤘
I'm currently living (and training) in Mexico and just bought a pair of cleto reyes. Best Gloves I've ever tried by far. Fun fact: Cleto Reyes gloves are much cheaper here and about the same price as Fairtex, Twins and other Thai brands which are a little bit more expensive.
@@thaiboxinginstitute I’m in central Mexico in San Luis Potosí, training at the Cobras Bujutsu MMA gym. They do Muay thai and kickboxing as well. Next time I’m in LA I’ll stop by your school for a session :) Also: Rad Tragedy shirt man!
@@DaveElwoodCutter damn always wanted to visit SLP, hear really great things about the place, come thru if you’re ever in LA, we’ll bump tragedy and HHIG the whole time 😎
A glove deodorizer trick that I've been doing for sometime (before I found out about the glove stix): I will fill a small mesh washing machine bag with the appropriate amount red cedar balls to fill up the glove - without overstuffing the mesh bag, yet allowing the cedar balls to fill up a decent amount of space inside the glove. I will leave them in my gloves until the next time that I use them. If cedar shoe tree's work for shoes, I thought they could also work with my boxing gloves - and so far so good.
I started off wirh a cheap pair of Venums. After about 8 months the liner and piping started to fall apart. Went with some Hayabusa t3's for my next pair (18 oz) holy shit what a difference. Have to use 16s for an uncoming tournament, so i ordered some Primo 2.0s. Cheap gloves vs mid/top tier is well worth the money
@thaiboxinginstitute I wanna give a thanks for all the comments calling out your "Tragedy" shirts and patches. I checked them out. Super dope band. It's like, doom punk. I dig it.
these lace up straps are game chaniging, i have Rival Rs1 pro sparring gloves from doing boxing and i'm going into muay thai, so it's a nice way to avoid buying expensive gloves since i have them, i'll just have to transition from lace to velcro via that thing, and just get a regular bag/pad work gloves, because that one's for sparring. thanks for the informative video, highly appreciated! These are quite expensive these days tho, worth it.
When i first started training i got some cheap ass pakistani gloves.. about 5 monts into it both gloves ripped by the thumb lol then the pandemic made me take a break from muay thai.. now been training again for about 2 months.. with the same gloves at this point they are hurting the tip of my fingers which i have no idea why😂 went on to buy some fairtex bgv ones! Super hyped to try them out next class! Thanks for the video!
Had a lot of brands over the years, but I swear by Rivals Guerrero now. Training three times a week for two years with them, not one quality issue and still great padding.
Good vid . To keep gloves moisture and stinky free get some peppermint tea bags and drop them in with the tag hanging out so you can pull them And it’s effective and really cheap , works great on shoes as well . Replace bags about every 2-3 months .
I am somewhere 200lbs, currently using 12oz TopKings - currently I am deciding, if to get 10oz Fairtex for bag work (improved feel), or 16oz for sparing (I already have Venum 14oz). What would you recommend?
I agree with stanky gear and stanky people in general. I dreaded clinching with a sparring partner’s stank ass gloves and stank ass wraps they don’t wash for weeks. That smell stuck with my face, body, and shirt for the entire night. I hit him extra hard for that. Great video!!
Best pair of kickboxing gloves i have had were Twins gloves, i used them for 2 years and my little brother used them for 2 years and they are still in good condition. They are expensive but i bought venum gloves and they are starting to break down after 6 months of kickboxing training.
I use a boot drier for my gloves. Works perfect and never had a smelly glove. It's the moisture that sits in them that makes them stink. If you keep them dry, bacteria can't grow, and they'll smell fine.
Thanks for the guide - definitely one of the most informative videos out there. I'm an MMA newbie, and I'm planning on getting two new pairs of gloves, one for training and one for sparring. I'm thinking of a budget of $300, so I thought I would get a pair of Reyes/Hayabusa gloves and a pair of Twins/Fairtex gloves. Which pair do you think I should invest more in - the training pair or the sparring pair? At first I was going to go for a pair of Reyes 16oz gloves for sparring, but then I realized that I would be using it a lot less than my training pair, which led me to consider whether I should go for 10oz Reyes gloves for training, and a cheaper 16oz pair for sparring. Thanks again!
definetley invest more in a training glove. A quality glove that will last, you will hit the bag and mitts more than you spar. for example for every 8 round sparring session that I have, I will have hit the bag leading up to sparring day atleast 70 rounds. My opinion on a good glove to get for training is the 16oz Fly X velcro or laceup gloves. They are very protective on your hands, They offer good feedbag on the bag, they open good in the palms like muay thai gloves, more comfortable than winning and are very durable. Right now you can get them around $190 on the official Fly UK website(they ship to the us). As for your sparring glove I would say Get yourself a 2nd pair of the fly x gloves in a 16oz as well. I know the two gloves would come out to about $400 but In my opinion theyre worth splurging the extra 100 outside your budget
Damnnn I came to this video too late I just bought a pair of everlast gloves to start my first beginner kickboxing lessons for this month 😅😅😅 next time I buy a pair of gloves I'll refer back to this video!
All good man, as long as you got yourself a pair of gloves. Hopefully you enjoy the sport enough to invest in some more equipment. Congrats on the start your journey!
I've been using a 14oz pair of Venum Elites for 3 years! Definitely overdue for new ones, I want to invest in Hayabusa gloves but debating if I should go with a 12oz or 14oz...I spar but not nearly as much as I do bag/pad work. I always wrap and I have tiny hands...any advice?
hmm- what do you weigh? If you are smaller (under 130 lbs) I think you can get away with 12 oz, but would still be weary sparring with those. Wouldn’t want to injure my partners. 🙇🏻♂️
Iam 165 and have 12 Oz twins gloves cause I have pretty small hands for my muscle frame 😅😅, I tried 14 and 16 Oz gloves from a friend, and 14 where still okay but bit big and 16 Oz where just nearly slipping of 😅.
Hello Coach Vik! Just to clarify, you primarily use the Cleto Reyes for boxing AND muay thai? I'm in the market to get either a pair of Cleto Reyes or Fairtex as my primary MT sparring + bag work glove and then in a few months, getting the same glove for sparring only (and keep a rotation of old sparring glove becomes training glove, get new sparring glove, etc). Wanted to get your input on this, thanks!
Hey Ben! Yes I do use the cletos for both Muay Thai AND boxing and I alternate between winnings and the reyes for sparring. You sound like you got a good plan, and you can always try a different brand the second purchase around. Good luck and keep me posted!
What do you think about RDX gloves for a beginner? I was thinking about getting a pair of fairtex bgv16. But I feel as if it’s too early to invest so heavily. 16oz for all training.
Been trying to do research for my first pair of gloves but there are so many different opinions. I’ve heard mixed opinions about Venum. Heard good things about Hayabusa but I don’t know just how good they are. You said Fairtex and Twins are good but in the classes I take they tend to just stick to kickboxing so I don’t think I need the clenching capabilities that these gloves provide for Muay Thai fighters. Should I just stick to boxing gloves like yahabusa?
TBH i think you're good with the hayabusa's for kickboxing style classes. You are correct in not needing so much wrist flexibility for those types of classes.
Thanks for the video, sorry to hear about your hand injuries. I'd recommend doing light bag work without gloves to strengthen the hands, or even venture as far as to recommend punching a makiwara on a daily basis. More padding will just make the hand weaker in the long run but it is ofc needed for hard sparring or heavy bag work. Peace out 🙏
I signed up to a Muay Thai gym 2 weeks ago and want to get my first pair of gloves but I'm restricted to ordering online and would prefer to keep it under $75 Are the Hayabusa S4 a good first pair? they cost about $70 shipped on Amazon
Im using a highest end everlast , 1910 series and disagree everlast never last because it lasted 2 years , the glove dont smell and the leather is pristine, yes i know everlast produced some questionable gloves but they make some solid onces too
@@robersniper yes for the money there are definitely better gloves, but i was just talking about the quality and ever last being labeled as product that wont last.
Thanks for watching! i use ringside or title boxing 180 inches semi-elastic hand wraps. I also recommend Meister hand wraps that you get through Amazon. Same length and material as the other I suggested (180 inches and semi-elastic). We have a hand wrap video in our channel where I talk about different hand wraps and how i teach people to wraps their hands.
What’s the gloves that have a free thumb (all fingers are still in the actual glove but the thumb isn’t stuck to the index finger, if you don’t know what I mean look at a generic boxing glove and you notice that the thumb is stuck). The gloves I’m on about are good for pad work and also better for clinching whilst having a light spar.
@@thaiboxinginstitute no but if you fuck up and let them get stinky it usually fixes the odor. I’ve saved myself having to get brand new gloves before just doing that
I just got 14oz Reyes. I originally use winnings. I don’t have huge hands, but DAMN it’s tight, especially when I put on long wraps. Is that normal and will they break in over time?
Ok i weigh around 175 I have cheaper gloves now but I’m already running into a lot of wrist issues being a beginner. What would u recommend I buy for bag work and sparring? I’m willing to spend a good amount on quality gloves. What would u recommend I buy if I’m getting two sets of gloves?
@@thaiboxinginstitute I do wrap my hands as far as lace up goes I don’t think that would be good because I don’t want to bother people in the gym every day to lace my gloves up
@@BiggCliph QA issues for sure, namely with the velcro. I would think the price point would be cause for tighter QA but that doesn't seem to be the case unfortunately.
my venum boxing gloves broke in half a year. Now I want to buy a new one. I would prefer to buy Cleto Reyes, but it is expensive for me. What should I think about? Twins in bgvl3 or Fairtex bgv1?Venum was very soft ..Can you help? I am 180 cm tall and 74 kg. I have 4 training sessions a week, bagging, sparring, trainings. Thank you
Yo! Thanks for watching. Where do you live? If you can get authentic Twins products then i would recommend buying two pairs of their gloves if you can afford it. One for training and one for sparring. Otherwise I would recommend Fairtex gloves. The cleto's are great but if it's outside of your budget then maybe splitting the cost for two pairs of gloves might be the wiser choice.
@@thaiboxinginstitute Master, thanks for the advice, twins gloves will be the winner! Can I have a question? I started weight training in addition to Thai boxing, is it normal that I feel that I have become slower in Thai boxing? What should I do to improve my speed? OSA!
@@masterpolir6145 yes it is normal- it also depends what style of weight training and frequency. without getting too much into it make sure you are consistent with all your warm ups, dynamic stretching and mobility work
great video sir!! i was looking to get twins but saw this and fairtex are the ones i need it seems, i got big hands . So 16oz gloves are best for bag/pad work for me? im a big dude
Are the Reyes gloves really good for Muy Thai and clinch work?? Willing to spend the extra money because I have several friends tell me how good they are but they just Box. Or is it better to go fairtex/twin route? Only like a $50 difference
Cleto Reyes gloves in my opinion are not good for MT. They are made from an old school type of padding so even a pair of 16oz's are like getting hit with a pair of 12's 🤕. They don't have good absorption when it comes to padding. They are known as the punchers glove, and if you plan on sparring even lightly you don't want to be that "asshole" in the gym hurting folks while training. For bagwork and pads I say go for it, cuz they do come in some nice colorways but sparring is a no for me. So if someone ask u to spar and they bust out a pair of Reyes just know that their intentions are to bring the pain lol
If you have the money for the investment, why not? I think they're great gloves, and to echo Jurrell, they sting a bit when getting hit with them. I made a mention of that in the video of it as well. In regards to clinching and sparring ,i don't know what kind of training y'all do so it's hard to say how they will feel to YOU for clinching. For example: When we do 'Muay Thai' sparring, a lot of the focus is on hand playing, long knees, and 'outside' clinching. All clinch work aside from sparring we do gloveless. Inside clinching and pummeling with any type of glove can be cumbersome. Furthermore when competing, one isn't using big bulky training gloves so to clinch in training gloves is almost a moot point. I say: Treat yourself king.
@@jurrelllaronal1654 yup, never spar with Reyes unless you know your partner and he’s not gonna be “that guy”. For bags and mitts Reyes are winning are my favorite and especially with the Reyes the feedback and pop you get are unmatched.
King shit. I'm wondering tho if you've heard of yokkao gloves and have a opinion about it.. Either way great, very informative vid overall. About to subscribe !
Thanks man! I remember the first time I saw YOKKAO gloves was like 12 years ago at my old Muay Thai gym- my first coach malaipet was wearing them. He used the gloves a few times and gave them away to one of the members of the gym. What I recall was the Velcro wasn’t that great. That seems to be the case even now but YMMV. The brand has been around for a very long time though.
@@thaiboxinginstitute they got here today. They're stunning. The quality is there and they're surprisingly snug for such a big glove. I can't even feel my knuckles.
I would say the wrist feels best than some of the other bigger Thai brands. It also depends on you wrap your hands too. I would side with twins though if you have smaller hands. Just my opinion. :)
Whats a soft glove for sparring? I have fairtex but I keep hurting my sparring partners. Ive been hit by the softest glove. Might have been adidas, blue and red colours.
I've been hearing they accommodate fighters with large hands well so I'm trying my first pair later today. What was it about their gloves that had you staying away? (if you can jot note it) Thanks for getting back to me and great video btw
@@lyledeporiss5937 I think the quality of Velcro isn’t that great and aesthetically they can be a bit much but let me know what you think!! Thanks for watching man, much appreciated!
@@thaiboxinginstitute I just finished trying them on then did a light bag workout and even just when I tried them on I could pretty much tell I was going to have to return them. The quality of the leather and the stitching was amazing but the thumb placement for me isn't good at all. It's protected but I'm stuck in giving a thumbs up position. I also have a lot of meat on the part of my palm connecting to my thumb and that piping locking the thumb in place cut my circulation way too hard. Sucks, I would have liked to try using them with wraps because there was actually room and would have liked to catch some kicks with that foam strip protection on the outer palm because it felt nice. I agree the Velcro left a lot to be desired and for me the strap is too rigid. Looking forward to any other videos you put out
I use ms300 for bag and mitts, ms600 for sparring exclusively, It worth every penny and your not goin to look into the other brand, Winning gloves is the real deal/complete package, Just have time to take care of it, using both for about 6yrs!
Hey, i was wondering what do you think about decathlon gloves. They seem like a great starting gloves for the price. I dont really want to break the bank so im looking for something bellow 45 usd, they seem like a good alternative to the more standard brands.
I am 154lb Filipino🇵🇭 around 5'5 just starting out and is 10 oz Twins (velcro) Gloves Good for training. I am Kinda Worried of the size it might not fit on me well... the chart that I found in the store said 150+ go 14oz but Im Kinda Worried it might be to big for me? my hand circumference is about 8

He literally said he wasn’t going too much into that at the beginning of the vid dude.. and he still explained some differences(like clinch work and why boxing gloves are longer for wrist protection).
I've had just about every brand except Winning and Grant over the last 18 years. None of them have lasted me more than 1 year. A few of them have had the shell wear out or tear. For the most part the padding breaks down. I put in maybe 10-12 hours or training per week. I do a lot of bag work and I think that's what breaks them down the most. I've paid twice as much for a pair of gloves and they don't last twice as long. I'm not really sure the most economical route, but I don't think I'll be investing in a $400 pair of gloves.
would love to see you review each glove you own! looking at all of your gym equipment makes me feel like a kid looking into a toy shop window! look forward to your next videos
