A quick history the Dells formed in 1954 as The El Rays, after one release they changed their name to The Dells. In1956 not having any hits they broke up, another group drove by where they were hanging out and told them they had a hit with "Oh What A Night". it took another ten years before they finally broke out and when they did, hey were unstoppable. four of the origianl five members were Mavin Junior, Chuck Barksdale, Verne Allison & Mike McGill, Johnny Carter joined them in 1958 replacing former lead singer Johnny Funchee, this was the one and only personnel change in their history. I've been a fan since 1956.
Johnnie Carter (first tenor/Co Lead) Marvin Junior (Lead) Chuck Barksdale (Bass) have passed: Surviving Members - Verne Allison (Second Tenor) and Michael "mickey" McGill (Baritone) are both 84 Years Old and reside in Chicago Suburbs, Homewood/Flossmor & Olympia Fields, but their Roots are in Harvey, Illinois.
Those jams are timeless, you can't go wrong with The Dells. Thanks! "I Touched A Dream", "Give Your Baby A Standing Ovation", "I Can Sing A Rainbow (Love Is Blue)", "The Love We Had (Stays On My Mind)" and "Always Together".
The Mighty, Mighty Dells... Doo Wop group! One of the best! 'The love we had stays on my mind's 'Give your baby a standing ovation' 'I Touched a Dream' and many more.
The good old 60s we had such great music back then my friends and I used to go see all these groups like the Temptation and the Stylistics Jimmy Ruffin Johnny Nash I could go on and on a a yes Mel we did jump on the stage to kiss them all we couldn't help our selfs great times 💖from you sister Denise in England 💖🇬🇧🇬🇧😘👋XX
The Dells - powerful and beautiful. Glad you guys found the video. The Dells were the truth! They were actually kind of a secular version of black gospel group The Soul Stirrers, featuring Sam Cooke, before he went secular.
I could wake up listening to the Dells and go to sleep listening to the Dells, they sure don’t make music that is as emotional and authentic as that any more. I was 2 when that song came out. Amazing guys👍👍- - Marvin was a 12 out of a 10- - TCB Frankie’Elvis’
Got to love the Dells ! Amazing Group with Simply Amazing voices , truly truly talented... In my house we grew up with this stuff because of my parents. I wouldn't change it for the world.
It was 1977 I was 12 years old and had just moved to Park Forest South Illinois. I made a friend by the name of Donald Barksdale and one day after riding our bikes he asked me if I’d like to come over for some lunch and I said sure. Both Donald and I sat at the dining room table while his mother made sandwiches. While I was waiting I noticed all these gold albums lining the walls and I asked my friend about them and he replied “Oh my dad is in a singing group called The Dells , have you heard of them he asked? I thought for a minute and said no as I ate my PB&J , just as his father ( Chuck Barksdale) came down the stairs. My friend said dad he doesn’t know who the Dells are and his father let out a chuckle and said that’s okay sone, everyone doesn’t have to know who the Dells are. I finished my sandwich and went back outside to play🤷🏽♂️
One of the greatest songs ever recorded. Was not in the doo wop era but definitely has the sound, love it. I was, very fortunate to have grown up in this time. Keep up good work
The five heartbeats is mostly about the Dells, it’s also about other groups in that era, the scene where Big Red was dangling the singer out of the window, that singer was Jackie Wilson
Leads Marvin Junior, Johnnie Carter, 3 backups are L-R Verne Allison, Charles Barksdale and Michael "Mickie" McGill. Barksdale was the last one to pass about 3 or 4 yrs ago if I'm not mistaken. Their music is timeless and we'll never stop enjoying them. I feel so good when I see you younger people reacting to it with so much joy. By the way, I really like the two of you together, never let the flames die out. If you ever go back to this video and read my comment, pull up the Flamingos song titled
React to: 🩵🩵🩵 1. a heart is a house of love soundtrack by the Dell, also 2. the love we had stay on my mind 3. give your baby a standing ovation 4. So you’re familiar with Mr. Marvin Junior. I don’t have to say his voice is magnificent!!! The other voice is Johnny Carter, & the deep voice that started off is, Charles Barksdale. Now, everyone I mentioned are all dead. There’s only 2 living now! And only 2 alive now, Verne Allison, & Michael McGill. Now, In their 80’s. They’re from Chicago, & started in about 1953!
The Dells são Magníficos! Lindas vozes! A Década de 60 foi muito rica, pois houve bons Artistas! Adoro este grupo! Que bela Perfumance! The Dells são especiais! Um grupo de muito talento! Thanks Shawn and Mel! I Love You! 💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓
Ok guys, you have to do some reactions with The Stylistics; Hurry up this way again. People make the world go round etc. etc. But, I must tell you, there aren't too many of these classic groups I did not see perform LIVE. back in the day. Wonderful time
The Five Heartbeats is about the Temptations. David Ruffin was lead singer of the Temptations. He got kick out just like the lead singer in the movie. He also file a lawsuit because it was about him and He didn't get consulted. Fact!
They got two versions of this song this is one of my old time favorites. We used to cruise with this song all the time. Kind of reminds me of Teddy Pendergrass voice.
Definitely one of the greatest Doowop songs ever! Absolutely loved it back then still do. Agree Marvin's voice is magnificent. Consider reacting to more beautiful Doowop. For instance. Lee Andrews and the Hearts Teardrops and Long Lonely Nights.
Hi guys, if you like this kind of music please try this one( when something is wrong with my baby) by. Sam and dave 1964. Black and white. Thank y'all.💞💞💞
