My tip for homeowners....use what you have. We buy or acquire pieces we love, even make them. When decorating or rearranging, go around your house first before you buy. "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change".
Other rules... 1. Creating tableaus provide a place to rest the eyes and make a space more enjoyable. 2. Furniture that is low tends to make for a more casual, relaxed atmosphere as do analogous or monochromatic colour schemes (make sure you pay close attention to layering textures when using those schemes). Taller furniture can make a place more formal, varying the heights and using can liven up a place as does a complementary colour scheme. (For my home, I prefer a tertiary colour scheme that forms a Y on the colour wheel.) Also, practice stealth symmetry with art and furniture even when not going for a symmetrical look. 3. For your 10% accent colour, move it around the room at different heights. This creates interest and movement. 4. Shiny objects bounce light and can make a place feel bigger--mixing finishes as well as metals also creates interest. 5. If you're stuck on what colours you might enjoy (e.g., walls and furniture), look at your favorite objects. You might have been collecting items over the years that have the colours you love most.6. It's often recommended that you decorate in colours that you look good in (favorite colours to wear). Well, um, I prefer to decorate in colours that I love to look at. Which leads to... 7. Know the rules and then don't be afraid to break them.
What I liked most about what the designers said was... Ask of other designers, what's their top ten? what got them started? Design does not belong to one person. I have a hard time believing that one designer came up with an idea, I just figured "great minds." When you look at a book or magazine and see something you like then you implement it into your design is it yours or someone else's?
