The rule of three is an interior design guideline that says things arranged in odd numbers are more appealing, memorable, and natural than even-numbered groupings. Three is a manageable number and the minimum for creating a distinguishable pattern but 5, 7, 9 or more can work just as well depending on the application.
While even numbers create symmetry, odd numbers create interest. An odd number of details captures our attention and invites our gaze to take in the whole composition. Too much symmetry looks forced and unnatural resulting in a stiff and cold look but balancing symmetrical elements with a little asymmetry softens the look and creates a more relaxed and natural feel.
So whether you’re a minimalist or a maximalist or somewhere in between, let’s take a look at some ways to incorporate the rule of three into your space!

Hi Liz, very interesting. I see that 60/30/10 is the commonly used colour ratio in interior designing but in Japan, they seem to quote 70:25:5 as the golden ratio and I am confused. Are they both correct?

Hi Toshiko! The 60-30-10 "rule" is really more of a guideline than a hard and fast rule. It's a good place to start when coming up with color schemes. I'm not familiar with the 70:25:5 concept but it seems like a good way to go for keeping a color scheme really cohesive with just a bit of accent. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I'm going to do some research on it. I absolutely love Japanese design!

question: i see often people will hang 2 pictures on a wall, but put one higher than the other beside, is this proper also? i really dont like that look

Hi Jeff! It's not necessarily wrong because so much of decorating and design is a matter of personal preference but in this case one larger piece or an odd number of smaller ones would probably be more pleasing to the eye. ~Liz
