The rule of three is an interior design guideline that says things arranged in odd numbers are more appealing, memorable, and natural than even-numbered groupings. Three is a manageable number and the minimum for creating a distinguishable pattern but 5, 7, 9 or more can work just as well depending on the application.
While even numbers create symmetry, odd numbers create interest. An odd number of details captures our attention and invites our gaze to take in the whole composition. Too much symmetry looks forced and unnatural resulting in a stiff and cold look but balancing symmetrical elements with a little asymmetry softens the look and creates a more relaxed and natural feel.
So whether you’re a minimalist or a maximalist or somewhere in between, let’s take a look at some ways to incorporate the rule of three into your space!
