I really enjoyed visiting the museum as well! I can highly recommend the 'aux écuries de la reine' hotel and restaurant across the street (I forgot the name of the restaurant). It is in fact Tiger 213, which was lost near the Wérimont farm that is on the town square. But the panzer is very impressive indeed!

The King Tiger was for the open field areas and never intended for small towns and villages. All tanks no matter how big or small are very vulnerable in built up areas.

It's hard to believe a GI with a bazooka could cause a King Tiger's crew to panically backed into a building.

Great video. For me it seems to be rather clear who knocked out Tiger 105 in Stavelot while reading 825th TD AAR Dec 17th to 31st 1944. Quote: One of the rounds from the 3"" gun hit the tank at a point where the gun extends from the turret, and the tank withdrew. In doing so, the tank backed into a brick building. Unquote. Waiting for new videos and report!

I have read the following. The 105 is at the very building where it ended its war. The crew abandoned it after fuel and ammo was exhausted, blowing part of the barell off in so doing. At some time a 90 barrel was grafted onto the 105 barell from a panther tank. Thus confusion about the version of the tank. The tank is now in an enclosed place at that location to protect it from the weather.

I recall a program on History channel/AHC in the USA about famous tank battles, where an American soldier describes how an approaching King Tiger (they were calling them "Royal Tiger") was hit by an AT gun and then backed into a building, which then collapsed and disabled the tank. good example for a fatal deployment of this tank into a village with that narrow streets. Either the commanders were desperate or inexperienced. G'day, Yay Team ! I posted a Video which you may beinterested in, about a 1943-vintage Military-surplus (2nd AIF) Blasting-Dynamo last week... I don't know if it has any Combat-History, most likely it built Airfields & Roads in the Southwest Pacific (my father bought it in 1946-47, & my son uses it as a Doorstop) ; but it still Works, I got 96 Volts & 13.2 Amps (open-circuit) out of it..., for about an eighth to a sixteenth of a second, when I used a Multimeter on it. It appears to be designed to be able to still work after being run-over by a Tank, the Case being extremely robust...; I never cease to be amazed by the extravagantly high quality of Engineering which is put into building equipment for the Military to operate with - blowing things up & killing people... Such is life... Have a good one, ;-p Ciao !

ooookayyyy?? Not sure of the relevance to this video? Oh! by the way? I see the AIF reference, going to guess you are Australian, yes? If you still have the dynamo, I hope it's registered and licenced , yes? Illegal to possess without said licence, (surplus or not)

Expending the last of Germany's combat power in the Bulge was just stupid. Going through the Ardennes was as stupid in 1944 as it was in 1940 - the difference then - was that the Allies had no one there but in '44 they did have some one there. Every time the norther Germans units tried to turn north, engineers blew the bridges and they couldn't cross. The Germans kept trying to go farther and farther west trying to find some bridges that were intact but the US Engineers beat them to them and blew them up. The biggest problem they had was fuel. They were supposed to do a parachute drop but it was canceled because of fuel. What I don't understand is they they didn't use those English Speaking Germans we captured to find the American Fuel dumps and then find the fuel to get them. I know the US had one of them that they emptied to keep the Germans from getting it. .
@Topfblende
@Topfblende 5 лет назад
Of course it was stupid in 1944, but the results in 1940 speak for themselves. Sure it was bold and a little crazy, but it worked, and therefore wasn't stupid.
@BobSmith-dk8nw
@BobSmith-dk8nw 5 лет назад
@@Topfblende Throughout the early years the Germans got away with doing things that were stupid because their opponents were stupider. Going into the Rhineland when the French and British could still crush them was stupid - but letting HITLER get away with it was even stupider. Invading Czechoslovakia was stupid but letting Hitler get away with it was even stupider. Attacking Poland with little to defend the western front was stupid but not attacking Germany's vulnerable flank was even stupider. Going through the Ardennes in 1940 was stupid but not having anyone there other than two Belgian Cavalry divisions was even stupider. Yes - it worked - but it worked BECAUSE it was stupid. It was so stupid the Allies didn't believe anyone would do it. The history of this is: Britain, France and Belgium had worked out mutual defense arraignments in the 1930's in case Germany attacked them again. Belgium was to raise as big an army as the nations could support - which they did - then have defensive positions prepared for the British and the French to come in and occupy if it looked like Germany was going to attack - which they didn't do. The big problem though was that when it became apparent that it was really going to happen the Belgians went into denial and wouldn't allow the British and the French to come in and set up. Only after Germany attacked them would the Belgians allow the British and the French in. Other than that - they were to be neutral. A light German aircraft carrying Staff Officers to a meeting got lost and landed in Belgium. The Germans were captured and with them the entire plans for the German attack. The Belgians gave the plans to the British and the French. The response was something like this: British & French "So! You want us to come in and set up?" Belgians "What?!? And violate our neutrality?" So - with the Allies in possession of the original plans - which were much like the 1914 plans - Hitler and the Germans were open to new ideas - such as going through the Ardennes. Had there been a line of French Infantry Corps through the Ardennes and had the RAF fully committed it's fighter force to the campaign - the Allies could have stopped the Germans in 1940. We can't, of course, know what would have happened but the Allies could have stopped the Germans and Belgium and France might never have fallen. So - yes - going through the Ardennes was stupid but nothing in comparison to the monumental stupidity of the Belgians. It is said, that the winner of a Battle is the one who makes the fewest or the least mistakes. Germany did so spectacularly well early in the war NOT because they were so smart but because their enemies were so stupid. Once their enemies stopped being stupid - the stupidity of what the Germans were doing became apparent. .

Everything is short, but the Tiger II had planned a diesel engine upgrade which would of been far more efficient in petrol. Even then subsequently, to divert resources for additional Diesel production other than the Naval demands would of strained an already collapsed system. But to supply 4 Tiger IIs would be a lot easier than supplying half a company of Panzer IV's at the same cost; not to mention the saving in manpower. At one point it can be argued the finese of training with the Schwere Abteilung Kompanies - but as shown here - Most replacement crews were combat inexperienced, only barely trained compared to the Panzer Lehr for the operation.
@MrJodyh54

That is why it was such a surprise to the Allies. They were hoping to capture allied fuel depots also.

Thanks for your response. This has been argued so many ways that it quite frankly does my head in some times. I'm no historian, merely an armchair tactician but the Germans succeeded early in the war with Panzer ones, twos and threes partly due to their speed! I suspects speed was a limiting factor in their failure the second time.

Imagine if the corporal had not invaded Soviet Union and wasted his resources in genocide. The allies would have had a tough time beating Germany

Would have been perfect for the wide open fields of Russia. But possibly too heavy for mud and snow ?

Looking back the Brith Lancasters did heavy damage to the German heavy army as it headed West ward. It saved countless Allied lives but German lives were lost not even in battle but from the skies. I think i recall there was a night raid that the Lancasters did extreme damage. Plus Tyhoons with rockets and American Thunderbolts which were nickname " steel hell" i'm sure caused alot of losses. Of all things that could go wrong the weather lifted. The tigers were stopped. My Uncle was in Germany and didn't repeat what he saw. War is outright murder, the follie of the devil.

Being from this side of the pond we forget how ancient some of these bridges are in France & Germany. One year a flood was so bad it almost destroy a bridge that the Romans had built.
