I started a new project, building a Rustic Mission-style sideboard to go with my client's Tudor Home. I start with the legs and build the framework for the sideboard.

I enjoy learning smart tricks like keeping two squares preset to mark out the mortises or setting tenon depth to the width of your square’s blade. But I keep thinking how painful it must be to put that much time, effort and attention to detail into a piece for paying clients whose aesthetic choices run so clearly counter to your own.

I have come across this a lot as a custom furniture maker, and I look at it from the stand point as being an artist. Let's say I'm a painter and love to paint sunset's with vibrant orange colors. A client wants me to paint a sky with blue colors instead I'm still going to do my best to paint that skyline even though I would like to have it with more orange. Same thing with furniture, I'm going to build every piece the best I can regardless of style. There is an unfortunate stereotype in rustic furniture that it doesn't have to be perfect or high quality because it's rustic. But in reality I build it as a high quality piece, and the rustic aesthetic is just the color the client chose. So every brush stroke is still deliberate, I just dipped it in the rustic color before applying it to the canvas. Just like the painter dipped it in blue instead of orange.

Even with a card scraper you would be scared , for the CA glue ?

White Oak has pretty deep pours for it's grain structure, so I'm leery of any liquid that can soak in and cause problems with the finish. Spoiler alert, present day, I finished the piece and had no staining issues. So my theory was either true, or it wasn't going to be a problem either way. I may have to side by side test one day to see what happens under the different circumstances.

@@Benham_Design my kind of scientific attitude :) bravo ! I did a lot of tests with Allback paint : much work… complicated paint

Since you made the pieces oversized, you could have jointed the faces to eliminate any concern about the CA messing with the finish.
