Beautiful. I love hearing something so incongruous and such a suprise. How many people would listen to this in isolation and connect this guy to the song..people are great
Thanks Luky. The song is a bit special isn't it. And Johnny is quite a character, being a Shakesperian actor as well as a musician. Thanks for your comment much appreciated 🙂🎸
This is just brilliant Stuart. It was the best programme on TV this Christmas & your rendition of the theme song is the best thing on RU-vid this Christmas too.
Thank you my friend. It's a long time since I was called a treasure. I think it was my Old mum 🤣. Good fun with the capos yes. I saw the guy in the Mumfords using 2 capos to get to dadgad tuning. He tuned the guitar to proper drop D, and put a capo over the bottom 4 strings 2 frets up. That gives the dadgad effect. Try that 🙂. Thanks so much for listening and commenting it makes my day 🙂 🎸
Thank you Ramen. Very kind words. I have done 3 tutorials on my channel, one for Brian Adams When you love someone, one for Jackson Browne Before the Deluge, and one for alternative tunings called " the road to dadgad and beyond". I hope they are OK for you and help you to enjoy music as I do. I love to share my passion 🙂 Thank you for listening and commenting it makes my day 🙂🎸
Had my high school headmaster (in America) recommend the TV show to me as I left for college. One of my all time favorites now. Stumbled across this cover today. So beautiful and soothing. Thank you.
Thank you Luke. I hope you caught the Christmas special, it was brilliant as usual. Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you liked my version of this simple but lovely song which fits the show perfectly. Thanks for listening and commenting it means a lot 😊 🎸
Thanks for your kind words Chris. It's a joy for me to share my music and receive comments such as yours. Thanks for listening and commenting it makes my day 🙂 🎸
Currently rewatching the series; I forgot how good it was :) You've done the original song proud, good for you. I had you playing about 6 times in the lounge earlier lol. I'll listen to some more of your music tomorrow.
Thanks M1. Yeah brilliant TV series wasn't it? And such a cool song. Glad you liked it. And I hope you get some enjoyment from the rest of my stuff, that's why I I do it, to share this thing called music. I'm still adding a song every couple of weeks or so, so plenty to go at. Love it 🙂🎸
@@stuartclifford8795 yer really great show, strangely one that seems to have been missed by many people I've spoke to. I'll comment on any other videos I watch :)
That capo trick is genius and so simple it makes you think " how did i never think of this" but i didn't. So thanks. Great versiont too. Good work man.
Thank you Jonathan. Great song from a great series. 🙂 I saw the guy from Mumfords doing the two capo trick to get to dadgad. He tuned the guitar to a normal drop D, and then put the second capo on the bottom 4 strings only. That gives the dadgad effect 🙂 It's all good fun. Thanks for listening and commenting it makes my day 🙂🎸
Magic! As was everything about that series, and this song. Reminds me of other similar work of art I love, the film Brassed Off, with Pete Postlethwaite, comprising a great script, great acting, great filming and great music. Always to be fondly remembered as something very special, forever etched on many hearts. A uniquely-English classic. I wish I had the musical talent to give that a go. Thank you, Stuart.
Thank you so much that's a great compliment. YT has given me the opportunity to share my music and it means a lot. Yes this is a great song from a brilliant series. If you are playing music, keep trying and you'll get there. It's rewarding at every level. Thanks for listening and commenting 🙂🎸
That’s makes total sense. Move a full step up to get you open “D” then use the capo to move the rest of the strings full step up. I have never thought of that. Thank you.
This brought a tear to my eyes 👀 I recently lost pops my dad Two words sum this up Simply Wonderful The Christmas special is hopefully not the end of an outstanding TV series ⛄🎄⛄🎄✌️🌈
It's a beautiful song and you did it so well. Love the series and I always seem to have a tear in my eye when listening to the song, in a god way of course. Thanks
Thanks very much Neil. There's a Christmas special episode on Boxing Day. Definite watch for me 🙂. Thanks for listening and commenting it means a lot 😊 🎸
Hi Stuart, my wife and I finally got around to watching The Detectorists. We live in Ohio now. I'm Irish but we lived in Cornwall and Devon for a number of years before moving, and I find the show takes me right back to the peaceful English countryside. And this song and acoustic music in it is all perfect. I really enjoy your version of this! Really nice
Hi Andrew. I imagine Ohio is a beautiful place to live 🙂. We love Cornwall and Devon for holidays. We live in Nottinghamshire in the Midlands. I imagine Ohio is a little less congested than in the UK. We've been to Canada a couple of times and couldn't believe the open spaces and distances. I love the detectorists I thought the last Christmas special was brilliant. And yes the Johnny Flynn song is perfect. Thanks for listening and commenting it makes my day 😊 🎸
Thanks for the video Stuart, I happily stumbled across your channel, Being a big fan of both the tv series and Johnny Flynn, open tunings, Nick Drake, JohnMartyn, Bert Jansch / John renbourne... I play this song in drop D usually and although i have used the 5-string capo technique, i've never seen the 2nd capo on only one string before..... Genius! thank you for sharing that glaring nugget of gold....
Thank you so much Chris, and you mention some of my heros 🙂 I'm glad you liked my version. I love dabbling in open tunings etc. Thank you for listening and commenting it means a lot to me 🙂🎸
Thanks John. Yes I've been besotted with music and the guitar all my life, and when my son insisted I start a YT channel as a lockdown exercise I've had a great time, talking to people all over the world. Do I see the Canada flag? British Columbia? Thanks for listening and commenting 🙂 🎸
Thank you Christine. Yes marvellous series, and the Christmas episode this year was brilliant 🙂. Thank you so much for listening and commenting it makes my day 😊 🎸
@@stuartclifford8795 Dear Stuart, thanks a lot for your very polite anwer. This made MY day. You are covering all my soul songs. Many heartfelt thanks from Germany.☺🌞
Thanks mate. My mum who is 73 insisted I watch this show with her. To be honest I thought it was going to be a load os s__t but I absolutely loved the series and really grew to love the theme song. I'm going to surprise her with a cover of it and you helped a great deal with that. Cheers mate.
Thanks Tim. Great song from a great TV series. I wonder if they are making a Christmas special this year? Thanks for listening and commenting it makes my day 😊 🎸
Thanks Stuart, that was lovely... a great song and well played. That's also a nice technique with the capo (or two)... I mainly play electric blues guitar and slide with open tunings but a well played acoustic still hits the spot :) Thanks for sharing...
Thank you RoatieMcRoat (I'm sure that's your real name!) I'm glad you like it. It comes of course from the brilliant TV series of the same name. Thanks very much for listening and commenting it means a lot 😊 🎸
Haha. Thank you Daniel. Good to know I can help. Btw I saw the guy from the Mumfords doing the same thing to get to dadgad. You tune the guitar to a normal drop D, then put the 2nd capo over the bottom 4 strings, 2 frets up from the 1st capo. That gives the dadgad effect Try it, it works 🙂. Thanks for listening and commenting it makes my day 😊 🎸
Thank you musikus. If you are in the UK you will know this song is from a brilliant TV series of the same name. They broadcast a Christmas special on boxing day which was brilliant. Thanks for listening and commenting 🙂 🎸
@@stuartclifford8795 Not from the UK but big fan of the show as I'm a detectorist myself. I didn't have the time to watch the special yet, but I planned it for this evening. The series is an absolute masterpiece.
Thank you Sara. It's a great song from a brilliant series. I understand there's a Christmas special episode on Boxing Day. Must see for me. 🙂 Thanks again for listening and commenting 🙂 🎸
Another great cover, I'm really enjoying your uploads. So pleased I found your channel. Look forward to exploring more of your work, all the best from a fellow Stuart.
Thank you very much. There is a similar trick to get to dadgad. If you tune your guitar to a proper drop D, then put the 2nd capo over the bottom 4 strings, 2 frets up, you get a dadgad effect. All good fun 🙂🎸🎸
Hi Dirk. Yes, great song from a great TV series. I wonder if you get the TV show in Germany? By the way, I have relatives in Germany and have visited your lovely country many times. Thanks from England for your comments 🙂🎸
@@stuartclifford8795 hi Stewart, i came across the song accidentally lately and learned it was the theme of a series. Since i do some hobby archeology with a drone and detector i got curious and found out we had the series only once and that was years ago. Luckily i was able to buy the DVDs from the UK. Great story, Music and acting. I have a friend in Wales and visited her, also Cornwall. Very beautiful country. Would love to see more of the UK sometime. Thank you for your videos!
Thanks Chris. Yes fab show, and the Christmas special didn't disappoint 🙂. I used to shy away from alternative tunings and capos, but now I love tinkering and exploring. Thanks for listening and commenting it means a lot 😊 🎸
Thanks Charles. Yes a technique that crept up on me when I was a teenager. I do use finger style sometimes but it's not as natural to me. I guess it's because I grew up playing rock. 🙂 Thanks for listening and commenting 🙂🎸
Thanks Kenneth. I am amazed that my little YT channel is reaching all around the world. Your comment from NZ is very humbling, thank you. I wonder if you see the TV series that this song is from. They showed a brilliant Christmas special on boxing day 🙂. Thanks again for listening and commenting it means a lot 😊 🎸
Hi Stuart, this is beautiful. I lovevJohnny Flynns music hes very talented and unusual. Ive wanted to sing this at our folk club but didnt feel confident enough but you have inspired me to give it a go. I dont play guitar but now i feel i could do it. Thank you. I'll get on and practice it, wish me luck! 😊
Thank you Fiona. Well done - go for it! This song is a good place to start. Don't worry about the twiddly bits and capo stuff to start off with. That can come later 🙂. Good luck, I hope the folk club goes well. Thanks for listening and commenting it makes my day 😊 🎸
By the way, I just remembered, I've done a tutorial for this. Here it is ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4x4bYpAUxD0.htmlsi=gJGXoq027hDOViIq Good luck 🙂🎸
Really lovely Stuart. Been meaning to learn this. Great tip on the capo. It's a pain doing a drop D normally and then tuning back again. Particularly if it's on a live gig. Thanks for the tip!
Awww... I like that. You're my new best mate! Drop D... up two instead of down two. My gift to you: look up 'partial capo'. I got one and it changed my guitar life! Love this song; not heard it before your version. Absolute diamond. Bless you :)
Thank you Rusty. The song comes from a brilliant UK TV series of the same name. (I wonder if you are outside the UK?). I must look up partial capo. I have seen gadgets that allow any one or all strings to be stopped, but never used one myself. Thanks for commenting it makes my day 🙂 🎸
I love the ukulele, and I think it's very well suited to this song? Keep going and I think the uke is a very good base for an easy transition from 4 strings to 6 🙂
@@stuartclifford8795 Oh no, 🤣🤣, I could play a few chords on a guitar when I was a student, but that was 60 years ago. Now I have a uke and it’s a race between it and the arthritis, (not to mention dementia)😀🌷
Well thank you Ash. If you look on my channel I have made a tutorial on this song. That might help, I hope so. Good luck and thank you for listening and commenting it makes my day 😊 🎸
@@stuartclifford8795 thank you Stuart I like your sense of humour, I'm just coming up to 80 so I'm ahead of you on that one all the very best and thanks again for the lesson .
Thank you Nathon. Yes a great series and a great song from Johnny Flynn who is a super talented guy. I seem to remember he is also an actor, including Shakesperian plays. Thanks for listening and commenting it means a lot 🙂 🎸
You're very welcome Kathleen. Glad you like it. I've also seen the guy in Mumfords do a similar trick to get to dadgad. He tunes the guitar to normal drop d, and then puts a capo over the bottom 4 strings 2 frets up. That gives dadgad. Such fun 🙂 Thanks for listening and commenting it makes my day 🙂 🎸
Thanks Stef for your kind words. It's fantastic for me that my channel, which my son insisted I started as a lockdown exercise has become so rewarding. It's great to share the music I love. Thanks for listening and commenting it makes my day 🙂 🎸
Thanks jk. Great song isn't it? It was the signature tune to a great and funny TV series here in the UK. Glad you liked it. Thanks for listening and commenting 🙂 🎸
Huge help, thank you very much sir, and beautifully performed as well. I picture you showing up to an opening mic, and walkin out with some young jerk's pretty date after playin that. 😄
Thanks David. I confess I had to look up da iawn 🙂. I've been to beautiful Wales a number of times. Must try and learn a bit of the language 🙂. Classic song isn't it, and of course a brilliant TV series. Thanks for listening and commenting, it means a lot 🙂🎸
Lovely version Stuart, well played Sir. Learning this myself at the moment having only just found out about the TV series! Its a great show and also what a song. I like Johnny Flynn's cameo during season 1 at the open mic night playing this :)
Thank you very much Lee. Yes I agree. I thought this year's Christmas special was brilliant 🙂. Good luck with the learning. Don't forget the capos 🙂 (or not, it doesn't matter- just a bit of fun.) Enjoy and thank you for listening and commenting it makes my day 🙂 🎸
So I finally watched the show. Man I loved it, we both did, me and Evička :) Beautiful show, it goes on my list of favourites along with Avatar the Last Airbender. Thank you for the song once again, beautiful cover :))
Thanks Dominik. Yes, such a simple song, a lovely love song, but it also reminds people of this brilliant series. I particularly liked the Christmas special episode this year. Again, very simple stories brilliantly portrayed. Thanks again for listening and for your comments, they mean a lot 🙂🎸
Thank you Ian. I am as we speak working on a little tutorial for the whole song (as requested by one of my listeners). It might be finished later today. 🙂 Thanks for listening and commenting it makes my day 🙂 🎸
@@stuartclifford8795 I haven't seen it, but I feel it's going to be on our "to watch" list now :) I noticed that many people who cover this song also mention that it's a great TV show.
@@stuartclifford8795 there’s a weekly folk club meet up in stalybridge I’m hoping to do my 1st turn, very nervous but nothing ventured nothing gained my friend
Stuart first time on your channel , very informative about the workaround of drop tuning. But that said you have done a fantastic version of the dectorists. Honestly fantastic sir 🙏🙏 Ross
@@stuartclifford8795 honestly Stuart you have the best way to break it down and I thought both your singing and playing were exquisite my friend 🙏🙏 Ross
@@BigVanSmallWorld 🙂 The main technique is that little riff all the way through, which is on the D chord, where on the first string you play a hammer- on from open string to 2nd fret. The chords i got from ultimate-guitar.com. I hope this helps, I don't normally do full tutorials, sorry. Have a go at that and if you have specific questions I'll try and answer them. 🙂 Thanks for listening, hope you manage to crack it 🙂
@@stuartclifford8795 thank you Stuart I’ve got that app I’ll have a little look and try working it out I’m planning on making some metal detecting videos for me channel and thought it would be fun to record myself playing that tune at the end to avoid copyright strikes 👍
